Hi,
I’m an Industrial Design Student from Northumbria University and I am looking for a 3-6 month placement within your team. I chose to be a designer because I love making things and more so making things for people. Our entire lives depend on people, multiple, changing, amazing types of people and I want to design things people cherish, depend on; things people need. But most importantly;
I want to design for you.
Design Experience
Product Manufacture Internship March 2018 - September 2018 For half of 2018, I was part of Raskl’s product manufacturing team, responsible for timber machining, metal fabrication, CNC operations and many other operations. I was also part of the installation teams, representing Raskl to its clients.
Education
Northumbria University Newcastle 2016 - Present
A-Level 2013 - 2016 [BBBC] Product Design, Physics, English, History
D.T Counsellor, Assistant Group Director June 2017 - September 2017 Based in New Hampshire, USA, I was Cody’s Design Technology counsellor, teaching design principles and joinery techniques. I was responsible for establishing and maintaining safety protocols, negotiating with suppliers and planning lessons.
GCSE 2008 - 2013 [8A* - C] including Maths & English
Software Skillset
CAD Internship October 2015 - March 2016 This early placement was an introduction to AutoCAD and design for manufacture. I was involved in prototyping sheet-metal parts such as control-cabinet enclosures and was introduced to CAM programe RADAN, both used to tool and price product runs.

Timber Machining, Metal Fabrication, On-Site Installation
Being at Raskl greatly enhanced my skill and understanding around manufacturing processes, working on a wide range of projects in many different areas from fine woodworking to metal fabrication processes, to designing jigs and CAD/CAM operations. Due to Raskl specialising in bespoke design solutions, I was able to learn in greater detail of the intricacies and problems surrounding delivering expertly made products. This has been massively impactful to my current design practice by giving me a more grounded and realistic approach to creating products of any calibre. 02

Dan Rose, Director Jake was a credit to our company in the 6 months he was with us working as a Workshop Operative. He was eager to learn and develop new skills within the workshop and always completed tasks with enthusiasm and care. He was involved in many projects, ranging from smaller furniture pieces to large scale art installations. Each bespoke project would require testing in which Jake would be entrusted to explore new materials and processes to develop into the final piece. Multiple projects required on site installations and Jake would always carry himself professionally and competently whilst representing the company.

How can Kenwood adapt to a millenial market by tackling urbanisation and the purchase of experience over commodity?
Meet Jane,
Sales Executive, Expert Millenial
I love cooking for my friends at our little get together’s. I wish I could justify buying a mixer, but it might not even fit in the kitchen! Bless Katie down the road, I keep having to borrow hers! 06
Millenial Attributes Learning from our Persona
Small Spaces
60% of the population will be urbanised by 2020. Household storage space is limited.
Experience Driven
Millenial consumers are more inclinced to purchase experiences over material items.
Born Sharers
Millenial consumers like to stay social, sharing items others may not own is a large part of their social spheres.

Project Development
Product Analysis, Sketching, Wireframing
Expanding from the research used to create our persona., we delved into trends surrounding millenials and how Kenwood’s brand sits within that sphere. We used a large wall space as reference to inform our initial and final sketching.

Making Kenwood portable Basic Service Design, Concept Clarification
In order to present our Kenwood rental system to consumers, we wanted to make the process accessible by using already existing infrastructure within companies which married up with Kenwood’s brand identity.

Card Prototyping User Testing and Product Styling
On deciding upon our combined service and product approach, we knew we wanted the delivery of this service to be a complete experience. It was important for us to prototype and test the product side of our solution for us to fully understand how consumers would come to interact with our concept.

Product Renders Solidworks, Keyshot
It was important that the three colours of our three main consumers were prevelant throughout the Kenwood experience to communicate the different kits and what they represent. The choice to invest time into the specific design aspects of the rental unit was made to validate the service as genuine and purposeful.

We recognised that distractions were one of the main disruptive factors around mealtimes. Our goal then, was to ‘compartmentalise’ a childs eating experience, from fun to tum. Altogether, we aimed to create a positive mental association of the highchair for both our users.

Our use of pastel colours intends to make playstul attractive to both children and parents with contemporary homes. We also chose to use HDPE for the main parts of playstul due to its easy cleanability and ease of pigmentation.

A ‘Scandinavian’ aesthetic was achieved using Scots Pine, a sustainable FSC regulated softwood. The Z-shape of the product indicates its modularity, a feature targeted toward families in order to create a kind of ‘family birdbox’ hub. 20

12 layers of matt white emulsion later, I was able to create a family of pebbles which had matching scaling radii. As this was a practice in material finishing, I kept the design simple but consistent.

The amplifier is an aesthetic re-design of the ‘boxy’ combo amps often used by home guitarists, inspired Scandinavian motifs in order to make the amplifier suitable for more contemporary homes. LED lights have been used to give the amplifier its own identity within the market.

Comic Sans?
Graphic Design, Storyboarding, Everything tea
For a university brief, I created a pop-up book on how to make a good brew: an essential life skill. I wanted to use Comic Sans as I feel like the font gets a bad reputation among designers (rightfully so). However, Comic Sans is identified as very helpful for people with dyslexia as it is easier to decipher due to the distinct shapes each letter has. 23
