Vernazza Vialetto Cinque Terre, Italy

This project focuses on mass steel structure design via the AISC steel competition guidelines. Vernazza is one of five towns that span Cinque Terre Italy, connected by hiking paths and railroads. Through the design of this project, we focused on connecting circulating walking paths as well as adding a train station to attempt to dilute traffic in this heavily tourism filled town. Our welded triangular steel structure uses aged steel to emphasize historic preservation, as it connects three different paths of movement throughout the site. This modernized steel structure creates a feeling of curiosity as both tourists and residents are drawn to the movement throughout the site created by our design.

Located on the northwest coast of Italy, Cinque Terre, which translates to “five lands”, is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in northern Italy. The historic collection of these five small villages each have distinct dialects, terrain, and overall experiences, but are joined together through railways and extensive hiking trails.

Attracting over 2.4 millions visitors a year, Cinque Terre is bustling with tourists from May all the way through September. Since the train is the means of transportation for almost all visitors, train stations and the surrounding areas have become overcrowded and near unenjoyable for anyone looking to experience these beautiful coastal cities. To combat this issue, we would like to propose an additional train stop in the second most northern village, Vernazza. Along with fulfilling the basic needs of a train stop, we would like to create a space where tourists can see amazing views while slowing down and taking in all the views before they embark on their exploration of Vernazza and the other four villages.

Community Cohousing Units, Urbana IL

In this comprehensive cohousing design project, I explored different necessities for people that would want to live in this community in Urbana, IL. These four separate units have a daycare, dining hall, library, and gym. Each unit has a common space with adjacent cohousing living units that range from 1-3 bedroom units. This comprehensive design caters to the inhabitants of Urbana providing exercise, community, and a joining of communal activities. The communal spaces were designed carefully to embody the characteristics of cohousing and community interaction. The open roof allows for lighting throughout the units as well as the common spaces. The offset of the ground level allows for the creation of four separate public patio spaces. The four buildings are connected by a two story pathway that allows for fluid circulation between buildings.

Library of Plants

Albany Park, Chicago, IL

Albany Park in Chicago Illinois has an immense lack of greenery throughout the neighborhood. During our site visit, we noticed the lack of green public spaces for people to congregate. As seen in the neighborhood portraits on the next page, you begin to see how I viewed the site, and what we thought would benefit it. the Garden Library stands as a vibrant sanctuary where community and nature converge. The exterior of the building consists of four barrel-like shapes with glass walls for the north exterior face. These barrels are meant to mimic a “window-shopping” feeling and are meant to be inviting for the community from outside. Our library consists of books, tools, seeds, plants, trees, and more that are meant for the community to borrow and learn from.

Site Analysis: Neighborhood Portraits

Throughout the neighborhood of Albany Park, it is very gloomy and polluted most of the time, due to the high amounts of public transport mixed with a lack of greenery. These portraits depict the way I viewed the site, and they aim to tell a story of inspiration and change throughout the neighborhood by adding a communal library that focuses on growth of vegetation in the area.

Urbana Market

Urbana, IL

Located in Urbana, Illinois, we studied an obscure site with lots of potential to become a community market. Its design allows for visually appealing entrances on all sides of the building. The folded roof allows for light to illuminate the different products within the market at all different angles. The connection from the market to the cafeteria area provides an open walkway which can be observed from the buildings exterior. The roof’s inspiration comes from my puzzling iteration model.

The market includes a cafeteria, revolving doors, a loading dock, undeground parking, fish vendors, fruit vendors, meat vendors, and many more. The market is located centrally in Urbana in an already community friendly area, located near parks and residential homes. It would provide the community with a space for gathering as well as shopping for food.

Graphic Design

My inspiration for graphic design came from my previous Photoshop knowledge and being able to utilize it to design in and out of the classroom. Last year I began working at campus ink, a student organization that organizes, designs, and prints orders for customers. Graphic design allows me to showcase my artistic ability and hopefully provide more artistic identity to my work.

Photography & Videography

Throughout my life, I have always had my camera and my drone right by my side. The extensive use of Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator led me to become incredibly intrigued by architecture and how I can incorporate that into my photography work.
