Performance Time c. 5:00 Performance Notes Inspired by the humor and theatricalit y of Shakespeare’s words, this work is a zany take on a choral performance. All performers must engage as characters and the story can be altered to fit the ensemble’s own vision. The basic plot is the conductor has not fully prepared the choir and is trying to make the performance a last-minute success. After several mis-cues by the the conductor, the choir becomes increasingly frustrated, begins mocking the conductor, and soon completely takes over. The audience should not be told ahead of time that this is a humorous work. Have a blast!
About the Composer Considered “highly imaginative…with big ideas” (Baltimore Sun) and “stirring and uplifting” (Miami Herald), award-winning composer Jake Runestad (b. 1986) has received commissions and performances from leading ensembles and organizations such as Washington National Opera, the Netherlands Radio Choir, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cincinnati Vocal Arts Ensemble, Seraphic Fire, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Virginia Arts Festival, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, and Conspirare. Dubbed a “choral rockstar” by American Public Media, Jake is one of the most frequently performed composers in the U.S.A. Jake Runestad holds a Master’s degree in composition from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins Universit y where he studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. He has also studied extensively with acclaimed composer Libby Larsen. [The choir gradually dies away as they realize the inaccuracy of the alto entrance. The conductor keeps going trying to salvage the performance. Once all sound has stopped, C realizes, glares at the singers, gesturing in frustrated inquiry, and then turns to the audience and gives a manufactured, apologetic smile.]
[Conductor gives a big cue to the altos. Hearing the clash from an early entrance, the rest of the choir grimaces obnoxiously and glares at the altos.]
