WELCOME TO THE 2013 CURRY FESTIVAL A message from Dr. Kiran Patel
T
ell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you who you are, wrote renowned gastronome Jean AnthelmeBrillatSavarin in 1825. I agree with the statement, and add that, food once a practical necessity, evolved into an indicator of social standing and religious and political identity.
Furthermore the transmission of recipes allowed food to acquire its own language and grow into a complex cultural product shaped by climate, geography, the pursuit of pleasure and ultimately desire for good health. I firmly believe that the role of what we eat is NOT merely for nourishing the body............ but also TO RECOGNIZE THE ROLE of what we eat and with whom we eat can inspire and strengthen the bonds between individuals, communities, and even countries. It is with this desire of this UNIVERSAL approach of the TASTE BUDS breaking all culture and ethnic barriers, THE CURRY FESTIVAL continues to invite the citizens of Tampa Bay at the India Cultural Centre.

8 of the World’s Healthiest Spices & Herbs You Should Be Eating.
WHILE SCIENCE HAS YET TO SHOW THAT ANY SPICE CURES DISEASE, THERE’S COMPELLING EVIDENCE THAT SEVERAL MAY HELP MANAGE SOME CHRONIC CONDITIONS.
injuries and dental procedures; it’s also being studied for its potential in managing heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease
CHILE PEPPERS – May help: Boost metabolism.
SAFFRON – May help: Lift your mood.
hile peppers add a much-appreciated heat to chilly-weather dishes, and they can also give a boost to your metabolism. Thank capsaicin, the compound that gives fresh chilies, and spices including cayenne and chipotle, their kick. Studies show that capsaicin can increase the body’s metabolic rate (causing one to burn more calories) and may stimulate brain chemicals that help us feel less hungry. Recent research found that capsinoids, similar but gentler chemicals found in milder Chile hybrids, have the same effects-so even tamer sweet paprika packs a healthy punch. Capsaicin may also lower risk of ulcers by boosting the ability of stomach cells to resist infection by ulcer-causing bacteria and help the heart by keeping “bad” LDL cholesterol from turning into a more lethal, artery-clogging form.
Saffron has long been used in traditional Persian medicine as a mood lifter, usually steeped into a medicinal tea or used to prepare rice. Research from Iran’s Roozbeh Psychiatric Hospital at Tehran University of Medical Sciences has found that saffron may help to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and depression. In one study, 75% of women with PMS who were given saffron capsules daily reported that their PMS symptoms (such as mood swings and depression) declined by at least half, compared with only 8 percent of women who didn’t take saffron.
C
GINGER May help: Soothe an upset stomach, fight arthritis pain. Ginger has a well-deserved reputation for relieving an unsettled stomach. Studies show ginger extracts can help reduce nausea caused by morning sickness or following surgery or chemotherapy. Ginger is also packed with inflammation-fighting compounds, such as gingerols, which some experts believe may hold promise in fighting some cancers and may reduce the aches of osteoarthritis and soothe sore muscles. In a recent study, people who took ginger capsules daily for 11 days reported 25 percent less muscle pain when they performed exercises designed to strain their muscles (compared with a similar group taking placebo capsules). CINNAMON May help: Stabilize blood sugar. A few studies suggest that adding cinnamon to food-up to a teaspoon a day, usually given in capsule form-might help people with type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, by lowering post-meal blood-sugar spikes. Other studies suggest the effects are limited at best. TURMERIC May help: Quell inflammation, inhibit tumors. Turmeric, the goldenrod-colored spice, is used in India to help wounds heal (it’s applied as a paste); it’s also made into a tea to relieve colds and respiratory problems. Modern medicine confirms some solid-gold health benefits; most are associated with curcumin, a compound in turmeric that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been shown to help relieve pain of arthritis,

PARSLEY – MAY HELP: INHIBIT BREAST CANCER-CELL GROWTH. University of Missouri scientists found that this herb can actually inhibit breast cancer-cell growth, reported Holly Pevzner in the September/October 2011 issue of Eating Well Magazine. In a study animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their resistance to developing cancerous tumors SAGE May help: Preserve memory, soothe sore throats. Herbalists recommend sipping sage tea for upset stomachs and sore throats, a remedy supported by one study that found spraying sore throats with a sage solution gave effective pain relief and preliminary research suggests the herb may improve some symptoms of early Alzheimer’s disease by preventing a key enzyme from destroying acetylcholine, a brain chemical involved in memory and learning. In another study, college students who took sage extract in capsule form performed significantly better on memory tests, and their moods improved. ROSEMARY May help: Enhance mental focus, fight foodborne bacteria. One recent study found that people performed better on memory and alertness tests when mists of aromatic rosemary oil were piped into their study cubicles. Rosemary is often used in marinades for meats and poultry, and there’s scientific wisdom behind that tradition: rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds in the herb fight bacteria and prevent meat from spoiling, and may even make cooked meats healthier. In March 2010, Kansas State University researchers reported that adding rosemary extracts to ground beef helped prevent the formation of heterocyclic amines (HCAs)-cancercausing compounds produced when meats are grilled, broiled or fried.

A
new force for behavioral health emerged in Tampa, Florida in 2013. Three influential providers merged responding to client demands for behavioral services that mesh with their lives and families. Gracepoint (formerly Mental Health Care), Personal Enrichment through Mental Health Services, and Agency for Community Treatment Services are now Gracepoint Management. One in four Americans copes with behavioral illness every day. They want behavioral services near where they work and live. Gracepoint’s seamless array of 99 behavioral health and developmental disability programs are in 48 locations throughout seven counties. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDLY Gracepoint’s member agencies have long histories collaborating with the Tampa Bay community. Gracepoint will use more of the public’s funding directly on services for people. For example, in 2012 Gracepoint’s partners provided $3.9 million in unfunded care. Team members cared for 17,632 clients who were indigent or funded by the Department of Children and Families. And, Gracepoint‘s founders absorbed more than $1 million in bad debts from people who could not afford to pay for their care.
NEXUS OF PROVEN PATHS The three providers are respected and accredited behavioral health and substance treatment centers. More than 1,100 team members and 29 psychiatrists guide 15,000 adults and 6,000 children through thoughtful problem-solving, treatment and on to their paths to wellness each year. Gracepoint’s three behavioral health crisis locations will be the largest in Florida with 119 adult, 29 child and 15 crisis diversion beds. The Tampa sites also serve as training locations for psychiatric residents and fellows from University of South Florida Morsani School of Medicine. Behavioral health crises are scary for families. To make it easier, the ACTS detox center moved onto the Gracepoint Seminole Heights campus last year. Housing all the crisis services on one campus works well for patients, families and law enforcement. We have stopped the treks across town. When medical evaluation shows a need for mental health rather than detox, our mental health partner is next door. Gracepoint is more than a place for behavioral health care. We are the source for wellness. This is all we do, and we help people achieve their best lives. Second International Curry Festival 2013 | www.tbicf.com

Program Description: The Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County’s (FJCHC) mission is to improve the lives of family violence victims through community collaboration and the provision of comprehensive services in a single location. Very simply, we’re a one-stop-shop for domestic violence victims. FJCHC is part of The President’s Family Justice Center Initiative, and is one of 15 sites around the nation, and the only in Florida. The Hillsborough County site was awarded a federal grant for the planning, development, and establishment of a family justice center that is modeled after San Diego’s pilot Family Justice Center. Previously, a domestic violence victim would face a logistical nightmare of driving to numerous places and working with various agencies that are not connected. Now with FJCHC, there are over 20 agencies and programs under one roof, all working together, for the domestic violence victim and his/her families. The Family Justice Center, with our one-stop-shop approach has produced significant results for the domestic violence victims we serve. Instead of a domestic violence victim having to travel to numerous places for various services – police reports, legal assistance, injunctions for protection, food and shelter, medical care, counseling and other needed assistance – the one-stop-shop approach places all of these services under one roof. Additionally, it fosters collaboration among the providers of all of these services to serve as a single, supportive team for the domestic violence victim. Population Served: Victims of Domestic Violence, over 10,000 served since opening in 2006 Service Area: Office located in Hillsborough County, but can serve any victim of domestic violence Referral Process: Walk-In or call for an appointment 813-935-2015

Keisha Prime, the musical hybrid, was born on the eclectic and gorgeous island of Trinidad and grew up in Antigua, one of the pearls of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. She was introduced to the world of music at the age of 5 through piano lessons, and as a result her life has never been the same. At the age of 8 she wrote her first of many songs, and at the age of 13 she taught herself the violin. When she was 14 she moved to Alabama. As a result of having been exposed to different cultures her voice and her music reflect the fusion of these elements. She has studied music technology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she developed her vocal skills and music production techniques graduating with a 4.0 and a Musical Achievement award from the Department of Music. Her faith in Christ is the cornerstone of all that she does and seeks to glorify God and uplift mankind with every single gift He has given to her. Because of her wide array of influences from Plumb, Amy Lee, Kathleen Battle, Whitney Houston, Bjork, Natacha Atlas to Lauryn Hill and Sarah Brightman, her vocal and music production style is a morph among rock, pop, classical, reggae, and gospel. PRIME DINERO The Borough of Brooklyn, New York has born and raised some of rap’s greatest to ever spit on the microphone from Mos Def to Jay-z to the late Notorious B.I.G to name a few. Prime-which stands for first in excellence, quality, and value developed his original, unique style growing up as a kid in Brooklyn. While other kids were out hanging with friends and playing games Prime would be surrounded around a local freestyle cipher catching the latest battle between the next two up and coming neighborhood heavy weights. If prime wasn’t around a rap cipher you could catch him at home listening to a wide range of hip-hop, reggae and R&B classics such as, Brooklyn’s Finest, Jam Rock, 12 Play. It was there growing up in Brooklyn seeing local rappers succeeding that made him seriously look further into developing his musical tastes, interests and style. By the age of 19 Prime’s musical interests had grew to a burning desire to rhyme to the world his need to succeed took his journey from Brooklyn to anywhere he went, as he met and developed a long time friendship with his first rap partner, “Ben Frank”. Together they quickly caught the ears of hip-hop listeners as they graced the stage at many local college venues in the Pennsylvania area. After releasing their first album Titled “Stacks n Prime”, Prime truly realized how much his love for music had grown and that he wanted to pursue a career in the music industry professionally. “I feel like music is in my soul, without it I just can’t live”. Relocating to the south due to personal circumstances Prime kept his confidence growing and his style developed even greater; through networking prime was able to lock in a deal with management and Illapath Records with distribution through Universal. Prime has created a loyal following and has become a popular local artist in the Tampa region with his hot club single “XO” which is featured on his latest mixtape titled “All or Nothing” Vol.1 hosted by DJ Shizm. The mixtape features Prime on 15 tracks with over five original songs with production straight out of the Tampa area. Prime has worked with industry hit maker Mims and also has several songs in the works with known industry producers which add to his already growing list of accomplishments. The development of Prime’s success is the result of a lifetime of musical influence.

POORVI DINESH
Ajaxxx. Triple X. That one Indian kid who raps. No matter what you want to call him, he is what he is: a devoted artist, a focused lyricist, and moreover, a fierce emcee. Dedicated to “abusing the microphone” ever since the young age of thirteen, Ajaxxx can always be found honing his skills. Whether it is penning a thought-provoking tale, composing a battle track to bump to in the car or simply freestyling with the boys, the kid can always be found rapping. “It’s my passion,” says Ajaxxx. “It’s my love, it’s my life, and sometimes I feel like it’s all I got.”Born in Long Island, New York, Ajaxxx lived in Queens till he was nine. He then relocated to Florida, where the whole “rap thing” began. ‘Jaxxx developed his rap skills by battling at school, writing songs with friends, and jumping in cyphers. He linked up with Orlando’s DJ Gravity and put together a demo, which didn’t produce many results. Falling out with his partner, Ajaxxx took a short hiatus before returning to writing. He hasn’t stopped since. A 5-time open mic champion on local radio station 102 Jamz, Ajaxxx continued rhyming throughout high school and college. It was here that he began recording with longtime friend Madness and his partner Santiago Skillz (the duo better known as 5th of Skillz). “Forever”, his first single, got heavy airplay on a nationwide level.

A Message From Sadhana Shah, MD Are Routine Check-Ups Really Necessary?
Every 5 Years, Cholesterol check
One of the many questions being asked about medical care these days is whether the routine check-up really keeps you healthy. The value of check-ups and their frequency depends mainly on your age and gender. Your personal and family medical histories are also important. The following exams, measurements and lab tests help identify treatable problems early. For many medical conditions, early treatment can help prevent more serious problems. If you have any ongoing health problems you will probably need to see your provider more often. These schedules should be used for “well care.”
MEN 40-65 YEARS OLD: Every Year, Physical exam for cancer (skin, thyroid, lymph nodes, prostate and rectum), Dental exam
In addition to seeing the health care provider regularly, you should try to maintain your weight at a comfortable, healthy level and do frequent physical activity or get regular exercise. The recommendations listed below are based on guidelines developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the U.S. Preventative Health Task Force. They are guidelines for how often you should get routine check-ups by your health care provider: What needs to be Checked and How Often? MEN 18-39 YEARS OLD: Every Year, Dental exam, every 2-3 Years Blood pressure, height and weight measurements, and brief physical
Every 1-2 Years -Height/weight measurements, Blood Pressure check, Stool sample check for blood, Vision and glaucoma check Every 3-5 Years -Cholesterol check, Blood sugar check, Sigmoidoscopy after age 50 for colon cancer MEN OVER 65 YEARS OLD: Every Year, Height/weight , measurements, Blood pressure check, Physical exam for cancers (skin, thyroid, lymph nodes, prostate and rectum) Stool sample check for blood, Dental exam Every 1-3 Years, Thyroid hormone check, Blood count, Cholesterol check Blood sugar check, Hearing check, Vision and Glaucoma check, Lab tests or urine sample, every 3-5 Years, and Sigmoidoscopy for colon cancer. Should You Have a PSA Test? Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a blood test that can be helpful in detecting prostate cancer. There is some controversy, however, about the value of the PSA test and whether it should be done routinely for men over a certain age. Ask your health care provider for specifics.

uccess 4 Kids & Families (SK4F) is an awardwinning nonprofit that helps more than 12,900 children and families in Hillsborough County by providing low-cost and no-cost, family centric services. S4KF was awarded the 2012 Tampa Bay Non-Profit of the Year, by the Tampa Bay Business Journal, for their outstanding work in the area of family services. We support caregivers who have a child dealing with behavioral, emotional, or mental health challenges, and assist pregnant and post-partum women and their children through or Healthy Start program. Our unique value proposition is that we care for children in the home; and while there, work to heal and treat the entire family. We create a unified Family Support Plan and identify possible providers, broker and coordinate services, empower, counsel, visit schools, advocates, coach, educate and listen. Success 4 Kids and Families serves as a pillar of hope for many families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to secure the professional services that S4KF provides. In addition, to the outstanding programming and services the organization facilitates, S4KF is very active in the community, like becoming a partner for the Curry Event. The organization also organizes an annual March Madness basketball tournament for hundreds of hard-working students. Success 4 Kids and Families was awarded the

Dr. Sadhana Ramcharran
TBICF has come a long way from that first family curries cook-off competition in Toronto 5 years ago. What first started out as a possibility has no become a reality and an annual event for the Tampa Bay Area. Three years later TBICF is now expanded our range and have been able to invite additional charities to participate and share in the benefit of this event. With the continued support and involvement of Georgetown Wesleyan University of the Americas (GWUA) the host of this event and with the continued support and guidance of the Patel Center for Global Solution and Dr. Kiran Patel, remaining the Presenting Sponsor for this festival, it’s with certainty that the main intent of this event will be successful. Both organizations share the same passion and mission to help further education in the world and creating the opportunity for the less fortunate to have an opportunity to learn. Our committee has been a joy to work with it and I want to thank them and their families for the time they dedicated to making this festival possible. Additionally, I want to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful nonprofits partners, volunteers and Chefs and judges who traveled from near and far to make this event a success. Lots of time and many sleepless nights took place and now to see the result of an event that will feature many cultures gathering together to celebrate curry it’s a real joy.

Early 2011, I was asked to join forces to help make an idea a reality, I accepted the offer then shortly after the International Curry Festival was born. I have been on board since the beginning and have taken the lead role as the Co-Chairman. As an active member since the First Annual International Curry Festival, I have worked closely with many team members for this event to ensure all the pieces of the puzzle were coming together to make this year’s event even better than the first. I’m very proud and honored to be a part of this elite team of hard working dedicated individuals and look forward to continually learning from them while also sharing my skill set. The entire team is again working very hard pulling this event together and we look forward to many successful years. I am also co-owner of Shottas Entertainment which has been established for over 4 years, visit www.shottasentertainment.com. I am from Boston, MA and have lived in the Tampa Bay area for 25 years and have worked in the banking industry for the last 14 years Vishnu Singh Co- Chairman

I want to thank International Curry Festival Team for giving me the opportunity to coordinate the vendors and participants for this inaugural event. This gave me the opportunity to speak to various vendors and understand their requirements for their booths. It was educational as well as challenging to meet their demands and expectations. To handle an event like the International Curry Festival we have to manage kitchen, concession stands, and booths for crafts, jewelry, and food. We must provide proper location which has proper power and water connections to ensure success and meet the vendor’s demands. It is imperative to make sure that the necessary health and safety precautions are taken so we can provide a presentable venue. It may not seem like a very difficult task but when you face vendors with their individual and specific needs; each with their own personality, believe me, it is a daunting task. I am very fortunate to have a team of dedicated volunteers who cheerfully supported us beyond our expectations. Special thanks to all our volunteers who contributed to this event and working towards making this event possible. Ram Jakhotia Vendor coordinator
