Happy Diwali 2011

DEEPAVALI By Swami Sivananda Saraswati

This article is a chapter from the book “Hindu Fasts and Festivals”.

D

EEPAVALI or Diwali means “a row of lights”. It falls on the last two days of the dark half of Kartik (October-November). For some it is a three-day festival. It commences with the DhanTeras, on the 13th day of the dark half of Kartik, followed the next day by the Narak Chaudas, the 14th day, and by Deepavali proper on the 15th day. There are various alleged origins attributed to this festival. Some hold that they celebrate the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kali. It also commemorates that blessed day on which the triumphant Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day also Sri Krishna killed the demon Narakasura. In South India people take an oil bath in the morning and wear new clothes. They partake of sweetmeats. They light fireworks which are regarded as the effigies of Narakasura who was killed on this day. They greet one another, asking, “Have you had your Ganges bath?” which actually refers to the oil bath that morning as it is regarded as purifying as a bath in the holy Ganges. Everyone forgets and forgives the wrongs done by others. There is an air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere. This festival brings about unity. It instils charity in the hearts of people. Everyone buys new clothes for the family. Employers, too, purchase new clothes for their employees. Waking up during the Brahmamuhurta (at 4a.m.) is a great blessing from the standpoint of health, ethical discipline, efficiency in work and spiritual advancement. It is on Deepavali that everyone wakes up early in the morning. The sages who instituted this custom must have cherished the hope that their descendents would realise its benefits and make it a regular habit in their lives. In a happy mood of great rejoicing village folk move about freely, mixing with one another without any reserve, all enmity being forgotten. People embrace one another with love. Deepavali is a great unifying force. Those with keen inner spiritual ears will clearly hear the voice of the sages, “O Children of God! unite, and love all”. The vibrations produced by the greetings of love which fill the atmosphere are powerful

enough to bring about a change of heart in every man and woman in the world. Alas! That heart has considerably hardened, and only a continuous celebration of Deepavali in our homes can rekindle in us the urgent need of turning away from the ruinous path of hatred. On this day Hindu merchants in North India open their new account books and pray for success and prosperity during the coming year. The homes are cleaned and decorated by day and illuminated by night with earthern oil-lamps. The best and finest illuminations are to be seen in Bombay and Amritsar. The famous Golden Temple at Amritsar is lit in the evening with thousands of lamps placed all over the steps of the big tank. Vaishnavites celebrate the Govardhan Puja and feed the poor on a large scale. O Ram! The light of lights, the self-luminous inner light of the Self is ever shining steadily in the chamber of your heart. Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Withdraw the senses. Fix the mind on this supreme light and enjoy the real Deepavali, by attaining illumination of the soul. He who Himself sees all but whom no one beholds, who illumines the intellect, the sun, the moon and the stars and the whole universe but whom they cannot illumine, He indeed is Brahman, He is the inner Self. Celebrate the real Deepavali by living in Brahman, and enjoy the eternal bliss of the soul. The sun does not shine there, nor do the moon and the stars, nor do lightnings shine and much less fire. All the lights of the world cannot be compared even to a ray of the inner light of the Self. Merge yourself in this light of lights and enjoy the supreme Deepavali. Many Deepavali festivals have come and gone. Yet the hearts of the vast majority are as dark as the night of the new moon. The house is lit with lamps, but the heart is full of the darkness of ignorance. O man! wake up from the slumber of ignorance. Realise the constant and eternal light of the Soul which neither rises nor sets, through meditation and deep enquiry. May you all attain full inner illumination! May the supreme light of lights enlighten your understanding! May you all attain the inexhaustible spiritual wealth of the Self! May you all prosper gloriously on the material as well as spiritual planes!

THE SENIORS A WAVE ENERGY STILL ROLLING IN THE 21ST By Jagdish J. Bhatt, Ph.D. Retired-Professor / Presently at OLLI-USF

THE SENIORS DEFINED AS FOLKS WHO HAVE HIT THE MAGIC MARK OF AGER 55 AND ABOVE . INDEED, THEY HAVE BECOME AN IMPRESSIVE MANIFESTATION OF POWERFUL HUMAN SPIRITS AND LIVING LIFE OF FULL GUSTO HERE IN THE GREATER TAMPA BAY AREA.

T

INTRODUCTION heir collective synergy has bloomed because of creation of the Senior Club head quartered at India Cultural Center ( ICC) , Tampa in January of 2006. The Senior Club is an informal organization since there are no offices of president, VPs or committees. Albeit, it is a very dynamic as its membership keeps growing. Recently, a second center of the Senior Club has opened up at Ambaji Mandir, Pinellas Park(FL). And, happily, a few more new faces show up at their each monthly meeting. The greatest news is that the Tampa bay community support for the senior group has been overwhelming and quite appreciative and for which all seniors are very grateful. The primary objective of the Club is to provide a social forum to Americans of Indian extract and the visitors mostly from India to have an opportunity to meet, interact, exchange ideas and to share their worldviews and concerns over issues that impact health and so forth. Most of all to permit them to enjoy the intellectual, spiritual, cultural and social experiences on a periodic basis. Against this backdrop, to further enhance communications among the seniors, a quarterly newspaper Namaste: Hamare Saathi was also launched in the same year in 2006. Number of seniors wrote articles on important issues to express their concerns and point of views such as on health, miracles of alternate health, preservation of our Indian heritage and the next generation, how to create family tree , challenges and issues concerning senior citizens to men-

6

tion a few. The newspaper was published between 2006 and 2008. It acted as a spring board to take off in the wonderful world of senior’s many years of experiences. In the process, galvanizing the team spirit; strengthening bond of friendship among seniors. Monthly meetings of the Senior Club are held every first Wednesday at Ambaji Mandir, Pinellas Park and on third Wednesday at ICC. The meeting begins at 11:00 a.m. with a tea and a snack. There is about thirty minutes of social chat followed by a benediction, or prayer. The new members are then introduced. The main speaker is usually an invited guest either locally or from outside including from India. The guest speakers come from all walks of life giving presentation on variety of subject matters: spiritual such as yoga and health, value of aryuvedic medicine, health concerns of seniors, Indian heritage and religious values, financial issues and so on. After the main event as alluded , lunch was served permitting members to further enjoy their social interaction for an hour or so. After lunch, the group is entertained usually by the local talented musicians and singers . All types of Indian music was presented including classical, film songs, folksongs, bhajans and even contemporary. The program goes on until 3;00 p.m. and the meeting is adjourned. In addition, yoga and computer classes have been offered to the seniors. Also, even more excitedly, the seniors have undertaken a few memorable trips in recent years, for example to Orlando, Alachua and St. Augustine . The most recent trip to the historic St. Augustine is presented in the form of pictorial highlights with brief description as follows.

Happy Diwali 2011

St. Augustine, Here We Come

Figure 3. After the Indian spicy snack and hot tea, the seniors were ready to explore the historic St. Augustine. It was established in circa 1565 by the Spaniards; making it the oldest city in the United States.

Figure 1. On a beautiful sunny day of Fall , September 7, 2011, one-hundred and fourteen highly enthusiastic seniors hopped onto the two big luxury buses and headed to the oldest city in the United States of America, St. Augustine.

The city is named after Saint Augustine (354-430 A.D.) who formulated and organized the Medieval Christian theology. He is well known for his three great books: Confessions, The Trinity and The City of God ; synthesizing the Christian theology on a firm footings.

During the ride, the group enjoyed listening to bhajans, film songs and very educational videos on yoga and The History & Essence of North Indian classical Music. The four--hour journey seemed so short.

Figure 4. The grand old city of St. Augustine could be best seen by riding on the slow moving trolley. While exploring the city, dominant Spanish influence on many of its landmarks seemed so obvious everywhere. The seniors roamed around the lovely city for couple of hours in order to gain a bird’s eye view and to taste its natural beauty.

Figure 2. After a couple of breaks on the way, the group arrived at the hotel in St. Augustine about 4:00 p.m.

The essence of St. Augustine was captured by these following two memorable pictures: one depicting its natural beauty (Figure 5 ) and other, its architectural elegance ( Figure 6 ). It is true , one picture is worth thousand words. Well, what we have here is a double-header. So, why not enjoy the doublesweet, double-pleasure, folks !

The hard -working volunteers served bhel-puri and masala tea to the seniors to keep them going strong until the evening hours.

Figure 5. A breathtaking view of St. Augustine.

Happy Diwali 2011

7

Figure 6. The architectural beauty of St. Augustine is simply awesome and quite impressive. Figure 9. The following morning , after breakfast the seniors posed for a group picture before cruising through the famous Golf Hall of Fame en route Jacksonville to visit the Hindu Temple. At the temple, the seniors were greeted by their counterparts, the Jacksonville seniors and Shri Nileshbhai Patel . Nileshbhai also made an arrangement to have satsung and lunch at the temple . At the Temple, the seniors certainly enjoyed the darshan and melodious bhajans by the swamiji.

Figure 7. The evening , dinner was served by courtesy of Shri Nileshbhai Patel, the owner of the House of Spices in Tampa. Following the grand dinner, the seniors were entertained by their own members. This is because the senior’s can proudly say, We Got the Talent . And, boy they sure do as number of them participated . They presented gazzals, bhajans, film songs, jokes and real life stories and their respective performance was responded with great enthusiasm and intense applause. Mrs. Renuka Patel gave an outstanding performance.

Figure10. The seniors listening to the recitation from Chapter 12 of the Holy Bhagvad Gita and Swamiji’s bhajans as a part of their prayers at Hindu Temple, Jacksonville. Incidentally, the Ch.12 of Bhagvad Gita relates to the bhakti-yoga, pure devotional chants to Lord Krishna. Essentially, it involves purification of senses and it is believed that one who succeeds in attaining a purified state in the end would undergo a spontaneous spiritual experience of the Supreme Lord. After lunch, the group bid “goodbye” to their hosts and were on the road again. This time heading home to Tampa. The group made one stop over.

Figure 8. At the evening entertainment, all hardworking volunteers of the Senior Club were also recognized . They sure are the true Serpas who made our climb to the Mt. Everest, so-to-speak… a very successful experience. We sincerely thank them for giving their valuable time and dedicated service.

8

The volunteers served delicious thepala, tea and/or soft drinks. Soon, , the happy seniors hopped onto the bus for the final leg of their wonderful journey; arriving ICC at 7:00 p.m. Well, the trip may have been short but the memory of it, I am sure will last for a very long time for these fun-loving explorers of life.

Happy Diwali 2011

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It must be remembered that no organization is successful without the indefatigable support of the people behind the scene. Appropriately, on behalf of the Senior Club, I extend sincere thanks to the following helpful members of the community: (1) The Trustees of the India Cultural Center ( ICC) for providing excellent facilities free of charge since the inception of the Senior Club in January of 2006 to date. (2) Shri Naresh Kotwani and family for their generosity by providing free accommodations and breakfast to 114 seniors. The hotel facilities were absolutely Five Shining Stars. Also, we sincerely thank Dr. Kiran Patel for kindly sponsoring the bus transport and to the Jacksonville Seniors and Shri Nileshbhai Patel for arranging to have Satsung at Hindu Temple and lunch. Finally, thanks are due to Mr. Hitesh ( John ) Adhia and Miss Carole Debaude for their help with the word-processing and distribution of the senior’s newspaper, Hamare Saathi (2006-2008 ). (3) Number of local talents such as singers, musicians and professionals have given their valuable time to enrich and to enjoy the cultural, social and knowledge-based experiences to the seniors in past six years and we are indebted to all of them. Lastly but not the least, many volunteers including Ram and Rashmi Jakhotia and group of people helping in the kitchen have been the backbones of the great success story of the Seniors Club here in Tampa area and to them , we express our sincere thanks as well. FINAL THOUGHT This article is written to relate the social, spiritual, and cultural activities of the seniors in Tampa Bay area being carried out for past five years under the aegis of the Senior Club at ICC and recently at Ambaji Mandir, Pinellas park. It must be noted, number of seniors have been well- educated in different fields: business management, science, engineering & technology, medicine, arts and humanities and so on. Most of them had a long and a successful careers averaging between 30 and 40 years in the United States, Britain, India, Canada and/or Africa . Their collective life experience is awesome. If we consider the informal current membership of 200 plus and multiplying with average either 30 or 40 years of career experience , it would be whopping 6000 to 8000 years respectively ! That is about the time when human ancient civilizations just began!!! Think about it. In other words, the seniors as a group must be acknowledged as one of the important productive and living resources of the community in terms of being the torch bearers of family builders, heritage holders and overall carriers of long time life experience and wisdom.

Happy Diwali 2011

Let me leave my final thought with this simple poem saluting the seniors :

Yes, Spirits We’re We’re young at heart Yes, we’re seniors of This 21st, alright We’re explorers of life We’re builders of family And big dreams We’ve experienced, as well Who cares what tomorrow May bring We’re enjoying at this time We’re fearless bunch and Ready to go home to Eternity When the time is right Today is our moment Yes, we’re alive and well In this 21st, alright…

MESSAGE FROM CONSUL GENERAL OF THE REPUBLC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO TO FLORIDA ON THE OCCASION OF DIVALI 26 OCTOBER 2011

Fellow citizens, On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the staff of the Consulate General and on my own behalf, I am pleased to extend heartfelt greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Divali. The virtues espoused in the Holy Ramayana that are central to the celebration of Divali are timeless and bear relevance to our quest, as a People, to advance to higher levels of development. The fortitude of Lord Rama in fighting and conquering evil speaks to the vigor which we should display in admonishing injustice, greed, selfishness and ignorance to realize higher levels of spirituality, compassion, understanding, selflessness and joy. Ours is a world so interconnected that many of the challenges with which we grapple as a community are not necessarily unique to us. The extent to which we are able to surmount these challenges and continue along a positive trajectory of development is dependent, to a large degree, on our ability to shift our emphasis away material to spiritual advancement. May Mother Lakshmi continue to shine her light of prosperity, peace and joy on our beloved People and Nation. Happy Divali to All! Dr. Anil Ramnanan Consul General
