GARDENA AUTOGROW Internship project 6 weeks-spring 2014 collaboration partner

Gardena Autogrow is a future concept proposing how we can improve our health and well-being in the cities of 2050. Can we eat greener and stop wasting food? And through this reduce pollution and stop the growing trend of global warming?

CITIES OF 2050

I got the oppurtunity to develop a concept during my internship period at Husqvarna Group. The concept is based on Husqvarnas garden reports from 2010 - 2013. Based on the reports we see a trend of concepts focusing on how we can implement gardens into our future urban lives. Since 7 out of 9 billion people will live in cities, it is important to maintain a green lifestyle. What is left out in these concepts is that although we move gardens into cities in different ways, there are still things in our daily lives that pollute our environment and harm ourselves if it maintains that way. One of our biggest threats is methane gas, increasing the global warming 25 times more than carbon dioxyde does.

WASTE No FOOD

We waste food on a daily basis and not many know where all the food ends up. 97% of all food that we waste ends up on landfill deposits. When food waste is packed in piles like this, methane gas is produced.

AEROBIC COMPOSTING Aerobic composting is when oxygen is added to the compost, this is needed for the bacteria to break down the organic compounds but also for their own metabolism.

50-60%

PLANT

EAT PLANT

GREEN

40-60°C

FAST Perfect balance between water, heat and carbon-nitrogen makes aerobic composting the fastest way to compost.

The resulting product is a nutrient rich soil great for planting. If this compost gets to much moisture e.g, the airflow will be blocked, and the process becomes anaerobic.

The resulting soil, liquid fertilizer, heat and carbon dioxyde could then be used to grow new plants.

RE USE WASTE By re-using all ”waste” food we can exclude methane gas emissions from landfills. By re-using we can basically grow and eat our own food. This would both make us eat healthier, reduce current food production, make us spend more time in the green and stop polluting our own air. Our future lives will be very time consuming, which means that we will not have the time to look after our green. Could this recycling process work by itself?

THIS IS

MOODBOARD PERSONA A fictional character named Ben was made to clearify the issue in the year of 2050. Ben is a character who grew up in the 21st century in the outskirts of the city. In the 21st century the recycling units looked very robust, something people would hide away and commonly keep outside. I tried to identify the form language of 2050 and how we could develop these composting units to appear as something more attractive. Something we would be proud of to expose in the future.

BEN

“Nothing goes up to locally grown vegetables, it is something special with the taste, and the all natural colours”

”Wonder what happens with all the food rests, if I had more space I would recycle them myself”

”Waking up in the morning, constantly surrounded by green just outside your window, it is like a big part of my life is missing”

SKETCH PROCESS CONCEPT SINGLE UNIT A single unit with an aerobic composter on the top, a self-supportive green house in the middle, and a rest output on the bottom.

SKETCH PROCESS CONCEPT MODULAR UNIT A composting and output unit with modular self-supportive green houses that can be mounted around the composter.

CHOSEN CONCEPT The chosen concept gives the user the ability to grow his own food just by throwing it into Gardena Autogrow instead of the waste bin, creating a healthy food cycle without methane gas emissions.

PRIMO MY FIRST PROJECT 4 weeks-AUTUMN 2012

Primo is an electric toothbrush concept targeted for a class colleague. Primo comes with a charging station designed to work as a travelling case.

If it was possible, I would brush my teeth at least four times every day.

Since this was our first project at Konstfack it was targeted for one user only, my class colleague Sabine. Throughout the project, user research was made to get to know her habits better. Sabine is a travelling person and it should be easy for her to bring stuff with her. She is a minimalist who always buy easy-to-understand products with premium quality.

SKETCH PROCESS A lot of sketching and fast clay models were made to create a small toothbrush easy to travel with which also would fit Sabine’s hand ergonomically. Inspiration came from water, (fluid and solid).

MODEL MAKING

Clay & foam modeling, lathing, sanding and spray painting gave life to a portable and ergonomically shaped electric toothbrush, Primo.

CLEAN TEETH 24/7 Primo is a compact electric tootbrush with a recharging station/travelling case. Easy for Sabine to bring with her while travelling. Now she can brush her teeth whenever she wants to, 4 times a day, every day.

EVOQUE BACKPACK FORM PROJECT 4 weeks-AUTUMN 2013

A form project on how we can implement Range Rover Evoque’s form language into a new product. In my case a backpack for the extreme sports person. The task was to combine traditional hand sketching with clay modeling.

INSPIRATION EVOQUE

key FEATURES

Inspiration is taken from Evoque’s wrapping shoulderline, side windows, front, headlights and hexagonic textures.

CLAY /SKETCH PROCESS 2D and 3D sketching combined with clay modelling and digital sketching over the clay model gave new insight into how form could be developed.

FINAL FORM

The final form was refined in CAD and a rendered version of the backpack was made. Shows the pockets, textures and linework clearly.

RECYCLE TEAM PROJECT 2 Weeks-SPRING 2012 Jakob Dawod Linda Lagergren collaboration partners

Recycle is a new solution for todays recycling units. Recycle deacrease the amount of todays transportation to empty recycle units. Its built in compressing mechanism leaves room for more garbage than today. The project was made in collaboration with Ragn Sells and FTI, both working with environmental and recycling issues.

Todays REcycling

Todays recycling locations and units are very unclear in such way that there are no consistent locations for where to find them, they could basically be located anywhere. They are sometimes hard to understand, graphics are not always obvious and there is no consistent design language at all. They mostly look bulky, are treated bad and does not appeal many. They are oftenly full and people tend to leave their garbage on the ground next to the units. Some goals were made to prevent these problems in the new solution: /obvious locations /easy to understand /appealing design /compressing garbage /less transportation

MAIN CONCEPT

} A compressing recycling unit leaves space for much more garbage than the units do today.

With more room for garbage there is less believable that people leave their garbage on the ground.

With more room for garbage, the garbage truck doesn’t have to empty the recycling units as often as today.

Less transportation for garbage workers means less CO2 and a healthier world.

INSIDE FUNCTIOn When closing the unit after leaiving the garbage it gets compressed as shown in the picture. This leaves room for more garbage which leads to less transportation to empty the units.

DIFFERENT Set-UPS The containers form makes it possible to arrange them toghether in several set-ups. Here are some examples, the containers fit nicely onto eachother which makes them flexible to change for different situations.

InTuitive GRAPHICS Each container has its own colour and graphics to indicate clearly to the user where to recycle what. The colour indication also makes it easier for users to sort their trash at home, glass for example is connected to the colour orange. This saves their time when later visiting the recyling locations.

NeXT tO THE SHOP To keep the recycling process as easy as possible for users, this product is located near all kind of grocery stores. This is to remind you to recycle when shopping, on the go.

Produce SHOP CONSUME SORT RECYCLE

APPEALING FORM This is what the units could look like together in context. The hexagonic shape that they create fit nicely around a tree to create a more appealing environment.

NIKE Kuna OWN PROJECT 1 week-SUMMER 2014

Nike Kuna is a new shoe concept for Nike. This is an elegant shoe with the sporty and active form language of Nike still kept in mind.

MOOD BOARD Kuna is inspired by curved and triangular patterns, splitted lines, meeting surfaces and Nike’s own form language.

SKETCH PROCESS To find the right balance between sport and elegance a lot of sketching was made. The challange was to maintain a sophisticated look since the sporty expression easily dominated the overall design.

COLOURVARIETY Kuna comes in three different leather colour variations, all connected to chemical elements, silver, bronze and carbon. Three simple and sophisticated colours.

ACCORDIA Design for all 6 weeks-spring 2014

collaboration partner

Accordia is a new concept solution for todays airports. Accordia is a case which purpose is to eliminate stress, queues, misunderstandings and forgotten belongings in todays airport security checks. The project was made in collaboration with Swedavia, owner of 10 airports all over Sweden.

ARLANDA VISIT The project brief was to through research, visits and interviews identify a design problem to solve. The only limitation was that this solution would be as easy to use for a person with disabilities as for a fully well working one.

RESEARCH PHASE I found out that one of the main issues at an airport is the lack of information and understanding about the security checks. This is a moment full of stress and frustration. To clearify the main issues I did flow charts, user experience research, post-it brain storming, mock-ups and a second deeper visit at Ume책 airports security check.

FUNCTION MOCK-UP

My idea was to collect all these things into a case which you basically could scan in its whole and then just pass through the detectors.

How do WE speed up the process in the security check?

Accordia, an effective alternative, eliminating queues since belongings are separeted before entering security check.

TODAY SECURITY CHECK All airports have security checks. It is a long confusing procedure everyone has to go through.

Solution: /effective, no stress /no queues /clear info, where to put what /visible, easy to scan

Main issues: /stress /long queues /lack of info /hard for inspectors to separate objects in scan

SKETCH PROCESS While sketching the appearance of the case I took in consideration where to fit what and how to expose all the belongings so that they would be as easy as possible for the security to scan through.

FUNCTION ACCORDIA

Accordia’s function is inspired by the accordion, the musical instrument. The case has the ability to to be totalty flat, both for storage and transportation reasons, but also for the user to expose every pocket when placing the case on the security checks convayor belt. When opening the case it opens up similarly to an accordion when stretching it out. On the next page the bag is opened half way like this, in a zig-zag manner. Each pocket is made for different items people commonly bring when travelling. A pocket for laptop, liquids, jackets and one for other items like watches, belts, smartphones or coins.

Laptop place separately in laptop pocket

INFO APPLICATION For people with disablities or first time travellers, there is a section of the swedavia app where info on where, what and how to place belongings is explained. Similar info is available at Accordia areas around the airport.

SECURITY CHECK In the security check simply fold up the case and place it on the conveyor belt. Belongings placed in right pockets makes it much easier for security to scan through.
