Foreword This installation manual was produced by Sunlabob Renewable Energy and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community under the North ACP Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (NorthREP). The manual forms the basis for training and providing guidance to solar home systems (SHS) installers who are involved in installing one thousand five hundred (1500) SHS in the 14 atolls of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). It is hoped that this manual will be used for future trainings and installations of SHS in RMI. The current text and photos is a modified and simple version of the technical manual that was originally used for the training of the SHS installers that was held in Majuro in September 2012. SPC wishes to acknowledge the European Union for funding the North-REP project, Delia Naughton of Sunlabob Renewable Energy for drafting the installation manual, Marshalls Energy Company for providing the training sites and technicians and those that provided detailed comments and feedback on the original draft.

Step 1 Identify a location that faces south and has minimal shading. Pukōt juōn jikin eo eṃṃan an jitōñ ḷok rilik im ejeja an ellōr.
Step 2 Dig a hole to a depth of three feet. Kūbwij juōn roñ jilu ne ṃūlal in.

Step 3 Put the pole in the hole. At the top of the pole are two holes, make sure the lower one points south. Kajutak joor eo iloan roñ eo. Ilōñin joor eo ewōr ruo roñ ko rej aikuj jitōñ ḷak rilik.
Step 4 Ensure that the pole is level. Aọrōk bwe joor eo en jiṃwe im jejōt (ḷābōḷ).
Step 5 Fill the hole with rocks and cement to hold it in place. Kanne roñ eo kōn dekā im jimāne bwe en tōt im pen.

Step 6 Wait one day. Kōḷḷak/kōttar juōn raan ālikin jimāān.
Step 7 Attach the two oval shaped plates to the pole. Kōḷaaki dāpdep ko ruo im rōjekjekin oval ñaippen joor eo. (einwot an waḷok ilo pija in).
Step 8 Attach the two ‘L’ shaped beams to the top of the pole. The flat surface should be facing the sky. Kōḷaaki kōtal ko ruo an lōñ im rōjekjekin ‘L’ itulōñ in joor eo ñaippen roñ ko. Ren jit lōñḷọk einwot an walok ilo pija in.

Step 9 Place the shorter of the two rectangular shaped struts between the oval plate and the top beam at the front. Likūt añinwọḷā eo ekadu ian dapdep ko ruo im rōjekjekin rectangle ikōtaan dāpdep ko im rōjekejkin oval bwe en kōtal eo an tulōñin ṃaan joor eo.
Step 10 Place the longer of the two rectangular shaped struts between the oval plate and the top beam at the back. Likūt añinwolā eo aetok iaer im ejekjekin rectangle ikōtaan dāpdep ko rōjekjekin oval bwe en kōtal eo an tulōñin ḷọkan joor eo.
Step 11 Slide two short fat bolts into each rail. Kōḷaaki dila ko ruo rōkadu im dāpakpak iturin jabōn pā ko einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.

Step 12 Place the rail on top of the ‘L’ shaped beams with the bolts going through the holes in the beams. Likūt pā ko ilōñ in kōtal ko im rōjekjekin “L” im kōḷaak dila (bolts) ilo roñ ko ie.
Step 13 Ensure the distance between the edge of the beam and the end of the rail is 26 inches. Tighten the nuts. Āọrōk bwe tokran dōṃan kōtal ko ñan jabon pā ko ren 26” innem koj kab kapeni.
Step 14 Slide three bolts into the top side of each rail. Position them so one is at each end and one is in the centre. Kōḷaak 3 dila (bolts) ilōñ in kajojo pā ko. Ruo ilo juon dam im juon iọḷap tata.

Step 15 Place the panels onto the rails. Kōḷaaki panel ko ñaiion pā ko.
Step 16 Put two end clamps over the bolts at the end. Kōlaaki dādep (clam) ko ruo an jabōn panel ko ilo jikin dila ko ilo jabōn pā ko.
Step 17 Ensure panel is two inches from the end of the rail. Tighten nut onto the bolt and clamp. Panel ko rej aikuj 2” etoḷok jen jabōn pā ko mokta jen kapeni dila im dāpdep ko.

Step 16 Fit middle clamp over the bolt in the centre and tighten. Kōḷaake dāpdep eo an iọḷap ilo dila eo iọḷap tata im kapene.

PV junction box
Step 1 Install the junction box on the pole of the array frame. Kolaake junction bok eo ilo joor eo einwot an walok ilo pija in.
Step 2 Fit one PG21 adaptor to the bottom of the box and two PG 16 adaptors to the top of the box. Deiki juōn PG21 ekkeitaak iuṃwin bọk eo im ruo PG16 ion bọk eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.

Step 3 Install the connector strip inside the box using the screws that it comes with. Kōlaake connector strip eo iloan bọk eo im kōjerbaḷ jikūru ko ie.
Step 4 Attach PV cable terminals to the four cables coming from the PV panels.. Kōḷḷaak ede ippen kebōḷ ko emen (4) jen pāneḷ ko.
Step 5 Take the two positive cables from the panels and connect them to one screw connection point on the connector strip. Kōḷḷaki positive kebōḷ ko ruo ilo jejjōt in juon ian jikūru ko an connector eo.

Step 6 Measure the voltage of the PV panels, it should be above 17V. Joñe joñan kajoor in pāneḷ ko, ridiiñ eo ej aikuj ped ilōñ in 17V.
Step 7 Lay PV main line (2 x 10mm2 cable) in conduit. Likūt main (2 x 10mm2) kebōḷ eo iloan conduit pipe eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.
Step 8 Insert the 2 x 10mm2 cable into the junction box. Eddeiki 2 x 10mm2 kebōḷ eo ilo junction bọk eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.

Step 9 Connect the positive (red) cable to the connector with the two positive PV cables. Connect the negative (black) cable to the connector with the two negative PV cables. Step 10 Close the junction box. Kili junction bọk eo.

Grounding
Step 1 Determine location close to array frame for grounding. Karōk ijo jikin kūraun(grounding rod) eo bwe en epaake joor eo.

Step 4 Attach a lug to one end of the ground cable. Kōḷaake juōn edde iṃaan kūraun kebōḷ eo.
Step 5 Attach the end with lug to the array frame using bolt provided with array frame. Jikuruki maan edde eo an karuan kebol eo ilo dila eo jikin ippen joor eo.

Step 6 Put cable in pipe/conduit down the length of the pole. Likut kebol eo iloan pipe eo jino jen lon nan lal tata.
Step 7 Strip opposite end of cable and attach to ground rod using clamps. Ākil jabōn ṃaan kebōḷ eo im eddeiki ippen karaun eo kōn juōn ian dāpdep ko.

Step 9 Lay the cable in the same trench as the PV cable. Karōke bwe kebōḷ eo en ped ilo roñ eo im PV kebōl` eo ej ped ie.
Step 10 Strip opposite end of cable and attach to ground rod using clamps. Ākil ṃaan kebōḷ eo im eddeiki ñaippen kūraun eo kōn dāpdep eo juōn.
Step 11 Hammer the rod completely into the ground and cover with soil. Noe lalḷak kūraun rod eo ṃae ien ejakoḷok ibuḷōn bwidej.

Step 1 Make a frame for the battery box foundation. Kōṃṃane juōn frame jekjek in jikin pātōre bọk eo.
Step 2 Put frame in battery box location and fill with cement. Likūt frame eo ijo jikin pātōre bọk eo im kanne kōn jimāān.

Step 3 Level out the cement so the surface is smooth. Ḷābōḷe im kajejōt bwe ion frame eo en metal.

Step 6 Place the battery box on the foundation with the shade facing towards the sun, if the box receives sunshine. Karōk bọk in pātōre eo ion ijo jikin im kajejjōt bwe en jitōñ ḷok ijo aḷ ej tak ie.
Step 7 Place the batteries inside the box. The positive terminal should be close to the square cut-out in the box. NOTE: Batteries are heavy, two people should lift them. Likūt pātōre ko iloan bọk eo. Positive terminal ko rej aikuj ped ijo epaake anañin ṃwijṃwij eo ejekjekin square. KAKEMEMEJ: Pātōre ko rōddo, ebōk ruo armej ñan kotak juōn.
Step 8 Place jumper between the negative of battery 1 and positive of battery 2. Likūt jumper eo ikōtaan negative eo an pātōre 1 im positive eo an pātōre 2.

Step 9 Place covers on the jumper terminals. See red circles. Kabọri jumper terminal ko einwot an waḷok ilo doulul rōburōrō ko.
Step 10 Place battery plug on positive and negative terminals. See red circle. Kōlaake pātōre plug eo ippen terminal ko an positive im negative einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.
Step 11 Put the 2 x 10mm2 cable through the gland at the back of the box. Kadeloñ kebōḷ eo tok jen joor eo ñailo roñ in pātōre bọk eo.

Step 12 Strip the cable of its outer most insulation, so that the two cables inside can be separated. Ākil ṃaan kebōḷ eo kwaḷok jen kobban bwe en maroñ jenọḷok kebōḷ ko ruo iloan.
Step 13 Cut the negative cable (black), attach lug to the end of the cable and connect to negative battery terminal. Mwijiti negative kebōḷ eo (eunọ kilmeej), kōlaake juon edde iṃaan kebōḷ eo im koneke ippen negative pātōre terminal eo.
Step 14 Take the positive cable (red) to the top of the 32A circuit breaker. Kōlaake postive kebōḷ eo (eunọ būrōrō) ilōñin 32A circuit breaker eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.

Step 15 Cut a small piece of red cable to connect to the bottom of the circuit breaker. Ṃwijit jidik kebōḷ būrōrō im koneke ilalin circuit breaker eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.
Step 16 Using the battery box circuit breaker bracket, screw the circuit breaker into place. Einwot an waḷok ilo pija in, jikuruki circuit breaker eo ñaijo jikin.
Step 17 Connect the cable from the bottom of the circuit breaker to the positive terminal using a lug. Kōjerbaḷ kein edde, koneke to būrōrō eo tok jen lalin circuit breaker eo ñaippen positive terminal eo.

Charge controller and distribution board These instructions assume that the charge controller has been programmed for GEL batteries prior to installation.
Step 1 Screw charge controller and distribution board onto wooden board. Jikuruki charge controller eo im distribution board eo ñaion board eo.
Step 2 Cut out holes in distribution board and fit PVC couplings. Koṃṃan roñ ilo distribution board eo im deiki PVC edde ko ie.

Step 3 Choose location close to battery box and fix wooden board to the wall. Kālet ijo epaake pātōre bọk eo ie im kōlaake board eo ñaippen wall eo.
Step 4 Lay the cable from battery box and the PV junction box to the charge controller. Kadeloñ kebōḷ eo jen pātōre bọx eo im PV junction bọk eo tok ñan charge controller eo.
Step 5 Connect battery cable to charge controller. Koneke pātōre kebōḷ eo ñaippen charge controller eo.

Step 6 Switch the circuit breaker in the battery box to ON. Iuni ki eo an circuit breaker eo ilo pātōre bọk eo ñan ON.
Step 7 Connect PV cable to the charge controller. Koneke PV kebōḷ eo ñaippen charge controller eo.
Step 8 Place the circuit breakers into the distribution board. They clip onto the rail. Each house should have two 10A breakers for DC loads and one 6A breaker for AC loads if they have an inverter. Likūt circuit breaker ko iloan distribution board eo im rej make kwonḷok itōrerein. Ruo ian breaker kein rej aikuj 10A ñan kōjerbaḷ DC im juōn 6A ñan kōjerbaḷ AC ñe ej kōjerbaḷ inverter.

Charge controller and distribution board
Step 9 Connect from the positive load output of the charge controller to the top of the 1st DC breaker in the distribution board using 2 x 4mm2 cable. Connect from the negative load output of the charge controller to the negative terminal bar inside the distribution board. Use a circuit breaker terminal on the cable that connects into the circuit breaker. Koneek jen diwōjḷak in jarom eo an positive jen charge controller eo ñan tulōñin DC breaker 1 ilo distribution board eo kōn 2 x 4mm2 kebōḷ.
Step 10 Put jumper from 1st DC breaker to the 2nd DC breaker. Make sure there is no copper exposed. Use circuit breaker terminals on the cables. Waer jumper jen DC breaker juōn ñan DC breaker ruo. Eaọrōk bwe en jab waḷōk jidik mōttan kōba en jede. Illik edde (terminal) iṃaan kebōḷ ko.

Charge controller and distribution board The following steps are for systems with inverters
Step 11 Connect from the load output of the charge controller to the inverter using 2 x 6mm2 cable. Kōjerbaḷ 2 x 6mm2 kebōḷ im koneke jikin kadiwōj jarom eo jen charge controller eo ñan inverter eo.
Step 12 Connect from the output of the inverter to the top of the 6A circuit breaker in the distribution board using 2 x 6mm2 cable. Label this breaker as AC. Koneek jen diwōjlok in jarom eo jen inverter eo ñan 6A circuit breaker eo iloan distribution board eo kōn 2 x 6mm2 kebōḷ.

Internal wiring 7.1 Installation of indoor lights Upon discussion with the end user and given the available cable, decide on the installation location of the seven lights. Apart from the gooseneck homework light, each light needs a switch.
Step 1 Attach the prewired connector strip to the wooden board. Kōḷaake connector stripe eo ededeḷok waere ñailo board eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.
Step 2 Measure the length of cable required from the connector strip to the light, allowing sufficient cable for connection. Joñe joñan aetok eo kwoj aikuji jen connector strip eo ñan ippen tōṃa ko bwe en eṃṃan joñan an koneek kebōḷ.

Step 3 Fix the cable to the roof and wall using the aluminium cable clips. Karōk kebōḷ eo ñaippen bọrọọj eo im dipin ṃwe kōn aluminium clips.
Step 4 Strip the outer sheath off the end of the cable that will be connected to the lamp holder. Ṃwijit im ākil kilin jabōn kebōḷ eo im enaj koneek ñan jikin dāpdep eo an tōṃa eo einwot an waḷok ilo pija in.
Step 5 Connect one end of the cable to a lamp holder. Ensure that the red cable is connected to positive and the black to negative. Koneke jabōn rājet in kebōḷ eo nāippen jikin dāpdep eo an tōṃa eo.

Step 6 Mount the lamp holder to the ceiling or wall. Eddeki ñaippen jiḷiñ ak dipin ṃweo.

Step 8 Connect the opposite end of the lamp cable to the connector strip at the distribution board. Koneke jabōn rājet in kebōḷ eo ñaippen connector strip eo ilo distribution board eo.

Step 9 Mount the small wooden board for the light switch in the desired switch location. Karōk im kālet ijo ekkar bwe en ped light switch eo ie im kōlaake.
Step 10 Open the light switch by first removing the black shell. Mount the switch on the wooden board. Kōpḷḷlak mejen light switch eo ṃokta jen jikūruki ñaidipin wall eo.
Step 11 Measure the length of cable required to run from the light switch to the closest section of cable running to the light. Make sure there is enough cable to make the connections inside the light switch. Attach the cable to the wall with aluminium cable clips. Joñe joñan aetokin kebōḷ eo koj aikuji jen switch light eo ñan tōṃa eo. Eaọrōk bwe en eṃṃan joñan an aetok kebōḷ eo bwe en eṃṃan an koneek. Eddeiki kebōḷ eo kōn aluminium clip.

Step 12 Remove the outer insulation sheath from the cable. Ākil kil eo likin kebōḷ eo im joḷok.

Step 15 Remove a section of outer sheath from the cable running to the light. Ṃwijiti im ākil jidikin tulikin kebōḷ ḷok ñan tōṃa eo.

Step 7 Connect the positive from the lamp to the top of the switch mechanism, shown in orange circle. Step 8 Connect the two negative cables using a crimping connector for the light switch. Position this connection inside the light switch beside the switch mechanism, shown in the red circle.
