PORTLAND NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE

THE MISSION OF THE REVITALIZATION INITIATIVE Our mission is to work hand-in-hand with the community to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Portlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neighborhood. Habitat brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. We believe in creating strong neighborhoods one block at a time.

THE PORTLAND APPROACH Portland is a neighborhood and former independent town two miles northwest of downtown Louisville, Ky. In its early days, it was the largest of six major settlements at the Falls of the Ohio River. Today its boundaries are the Ohio River to the north, 10th street to the east, Market Street to the south, and the Shawnee Golf Course to the west. Portland is home to a large number of Louisville’s most prominent historic landmarks and a large percentage of the city’s pre-Civil War buildings. As of April 2012, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville has invested $4.2 million in Portland by constructing over 80 homes. Portland has been home to Habitat’s Construction Center since 2001. Recently, Habitat renovated a former bakery, which now houses Habitat’s administrative, development, construction, family services and ReStore functions.

GREATER PORTLAND MAP In September of 2011, Habitat defined an area around our new headquarters on which we could concentrate our efforts. The area encompassed a triangle bordered by 19th, Rowan and Bank Streets. We asked one of our community partners, The Network Center for Community Change (NC3), to create a land use map for the area. NC3 walked the neighborhood, analyzed the area’s 286 parcels, then presented the map to residents at a community meeting held by Habitat in October.

TARGET AREA MAP Based on the map and residents’ feedback, Habitat’s board recommended a two-year neighborhood initiative with the goal of decreasing the number of vacant and abandoned properties in our target area and addressing repairs needed to preserve homeownership.
