EDITORS NOTE
Hi and welcome to the inaugural edition of the Jamaica Travel Magazine. Like many of my life accomplishments, my entree into the tourism industry was not planned. Though I love Jamaica, love to ‘Stay-cation’, love finding new and unexplored nooks and crannies, rivers and beaches, love spending weekends at cozy villas on the coasts, love meeting other Jamaicans, I never envisioned that with a law degree, that my passion for Jamaica would ever be realized as more than a hobby. Thoughts of grandeur loomed momentarily when after being crowned Miss Universe Jamaica, I was approached by the Jamaica Tourist Board to manage an international ambassadorship program. Although the program never got off the ground, based on the excitement I felt with just the preliminary research, I decided that somehow, someway, I would one day be involved with the promotion and sharing with the world of my Jamaica. Fast forward three years later – and another unplanned moment, when after launching Jamaica’s first visitor TV channel, the Jamaica Travel Channel Group approached me to become a director in the company as well as to lead the creation of a signature magazine product that would compliment their TV channel, as well as lead a new thrust in tourism journalism. They never had to ask twice. The Jamaica Travel Magazine’s mandate is to showcase as much of what makes Jamaica the most desired vacation destination in the Caribbean. There’s so much to say about this tiny little island with its very big feet that with a limited first edition of 32 pages, and a higher take up of industry participants than expected, I am already chomping at the bits to publish our second and larger edition this summer 2016. Jamaica offers so much to see, hear and taste. From our internationally recognized cuisine, music and culture, to the island’s natural eclectic beauty, world class accommodations and excursions and most of all the vibe and energy of our people, our goal is to translate on paper the very essence and magic that makes Jamaica so special. At Jamaica Travel Magazine, we want you to unfold your vacation beyond the confines of your hotel and delve deep into experiential discovery of an island like no other. I hope our magazine offers you the motivation and direction to explore Jamaica’s countless moments of awe and to make extra special memories as it has for me and so many others. I hope you are inspired as you get to know us. There is no end to the adventures you can have here. You simply have to ask. Many thanks to the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, the Jamaica Tourist Board, the JHTA, our several sponsors, co-workers, partners, friends and well-wishers. Nuff Love,
Kerrie Baylis 4

TIPS
Written By: Daryl Roberts
1.
Travel documents - Be sure to pack a valid passport and other forms of photo identification such as a driver’s license or work ID. Keep copies of each.
2.
Emergency contacts - Make sure that your friends and family know how to reach you and where in Jamaica you’ll be staying.
3.
Local laws - When going to a new country it’s a good idea to know what you can and can’t do. There may be things allowed at home that are not allowed here or the reverse!
4.
Know how to get around - Although Jamaica is a small island knowing how to get from place to place is important. Luckily this guide has you covered.
a) The two major international airports: Sangster International Airport (MBJ) - Named after former Prime Minister Sir Donald Sangster, MBJ is the larger airport on the island. Located in the heart of Montego Bay it is just a few minutes away from many of the major hotels, guest houses and villas in the area.
Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) - Situated approximately 20 minutes from the heart of the capital city of Kingston it serves a wide range of travelers; foreign nationals ( for business and leisure) as well as non-resident and resident Jamaicans. Tel: (876) 924-8452-6 Toll free from Jamaica 1 - 888 - AIRPORT www.nmia.aero
b) Car Rental – There are several car rental companies located across the island: Budget International Rentals – (876) 953-0534/952-3838 Hertz Car Rental – (876) 952-4250/979-0438 Island Car Rental – (876) 952-5771/952-7225 Avis Car Rental – (876) 952-0762/979-1060 Thrifty - (876) 952-1126/812-5989
c) Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) - buses run regularly through and around Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine. There is usually at least one bus available every 15 to 20 minutes Tel: (876) 749-3192-9 JAMAICA TRAVEL
e) Jamaica Co-operative Automobile and Limousine Tours Ltd (JCAL) Tel: (876) 952-7574 www.jcaltours.com
f) Knutsford Express. With punctuality and fair rates, Knutsford Express makes travelling a hassle free experience. Tel: (876) 971-1822 www.knutsfordexpress.com
5.
Start your days early - Jamaica’s beauty is breathtaking at all times of the day, but there’s something particularly picturesque about sunrise. The island wakes up with warm yellow light filling the contours between majestic hills and tranquil valleys.
6.
Emergency money - Anything can happen anywhere in the world. ATMs may not work or you could lose your purse or wallet in the carefree vibe of island life. Stashing a little cash as a safety net can do wonders for your peace of mind if any unpleasant surprises interrupt your holiday fun.
7.
Be very careful with your belongings – and make use of the hotel safe. Avoid wearing jewelry on the road trips or excursions. Sometimes a mere slip while climbing up a waterfall or walking a nature trail can be enough to lose your precious pieces in nature.

Back everything up - It’s not so much the laptops, cameras and tablets that we can’t live without, but the work and memories stored on them. Be sure to back up all essentials as items of this nature can get misplaced.
9.
Meet the people - No one can give you a better tour than the locals. There is a living, breathing culture here: from music and rich history to hidden treasures that only locals know about.
10.
Try the food - So much of this island’s personality is in the food. Jamaicans, like other people around the world, love to eat and they know how to make an experience out of it. With nuanced flavours and textures galore, you are sure to find a recipe or two to take home to your own kitchen.
11.
Make notes - From the names of the people that you meet along your journeys, to hidden gems found off the beaten path, to the food you’ll enjoy, there are many things to jot down that will keep your memories as lively as your experiences. WINTER 2015/16
An Island Wedding Written By: Aiesha Panton (pussbackfoot)

S
o he popped the BIG question and you said, “YES!” You’re floating and giddy with excitement as you’re officially on your way to spending the rest of your days with the love of your life. Somewhere in your wedding dreams, your toes are in the sand or you’re on a beautiful bluff with the most perfect sunset as your backdrop. Yes, that place is Jamaica, also known as Jamrock, Jamdown…a little island in the sun, rich with beauty, history, and culture far beyond which you would expect from a relative dot on the map. It’s for sure…you know you want a destination wedding in Jamaica, with your nearest, dearest, and without a doubt, insanely fun family and friends. You of course, check to see the legal requirements for getting married in Jamaica and then the fun begins! First up, pick your venue! The great thing about Jamaica is that you can plan a long weekend of varied activities, where you start on the beach, tour through the mountains, exchange vows in a centuries-old church; dine at a great-house and then dance the night away back on the beach where you started. Depending on how you would like to celebrate, you can choose a package at a hotel, opt for a villa, or choose a standalone venue. Some all-time favorite wedding spaces are Golden Eye, a luxury villa resort of Ian Fleming, famed in Oracabessa for rustic elegance, Bellefield Great House on the outskirts of Montego Bay for romantic traditional charm and GeeJam for laidback chic in Port Antonio. Also yours for the taking is Frankfort Prospect Villa, a fabulous beach villa just outside Ocho Rios that offers the best of both worlds: lush gardens and a pristine white-sand beach that deliver a clean palate for you to play with. Laughing Waters near Ocho Rios has a similar appeal, with its sprawling lawns, beach and a waterfall in its backyard. Then there is Villa Del Mar and Caves in Negril, for cliff-side magic overlooking the Caribbean SeaThese beautiful, historic options include Prospect Chapel just outside of Ocho Rios, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in St. Ann’s Bay, St. Mark’s, a quaint chapel mountain-side in Irish Town or the most enchanting cathedral in Downtown Kingston for couples who wish to wed in the capital city. So once you’ve done your research, I definitely recommend making a trip to the island to visit the places that interest you; just so you can feel comfortable that the space is right for you. You can also see for yourself any

additional offerings and be confident they are to your liking. The next must-do is to get a local wedding planner, particularly if you are a bride or groom who prefers a more customized wedding experience. One way to truly have a memorable destination wedding is to incorporate as much of the local culture into your celebration as possible. A good planner will be able to help you with that, as well as make recommendations about vendors who are a good match to execute your wedding day vision. Here are just a few fun and unique ways to add Jamaican flair to your wedding: • Host a welcome party or cocktail hour on the beach with Congo drummers donned in reggae-colored tribal costumes • Light a bonfire, but give it a spin with mini fire pits where guests sit in a nook on the sand and roast their own rum-soaked pineapple kebabs, or drink from hand-made bamboo cups and straws • Serve soups from hand-made calabash bowls • Give your guests a treat and invite a dub-poet to perform some light-hearted poetry or invite the community choir to sing popular folk songs or locally-composed hymns • Have a farm-to-table rehearsal dinner out on a farm or up in the mountain. • There is also a host of activities that you can include in your wedding weekend, including a Bob Marley tour, a tour to a Maroon Village, Jamaican culinary lessons, a Blue-Mountain coffee tasting and so much more. You can also incorporate some Jamaican wedding traditions like serving a delicious dark fruit wedding cake, baked with fruits that have been soaked in rum and wine for months! The best part of this cake is storing the top tier in the freezer and cutting it on your first anniversary. Interestingly, in older days there used to be a special procession for the cake, where it would be covered in lace and carried by older married ladies to the wedding reception! As you can see, Jamaica is the ultimate wedding destination. No matter your style you will find an option to bring your wedding day dreams to life; truly making it the. best.day.ever!

Jamaica Villa Life Written By: Kerrie Baylis

Imagine being welcomed at the door with tantalizing cocktails, choosing your own room with breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, slipping straight into your swim gear, then heading over to your very own private pool, laying out in the sun, only to hear “lunch is served”. That’s just the start of your vacation, that’s the start of your week in the Jamaica Villa Life experience. Travelers often stay in hotels because that’s what they hear about the most – and with Jamaica being the King of the All-Inclusive Hotel concept (swanky tropical beach hotels heavily marketed for its convenience and one off payment that allows for an all you can consume), the Jamaican hotel is always a no-brainer. However, for the more discerning traveler that cherishes privacy and individualized service and a bit more of the Jamaican lifestyle, the Private Villa is the only way to go. World tourism statistics show that villa accommodations are on the rise. This should come as no surprise to those who have stayed at a villa before. Tailored to the traveler’s every desire, you can have most anything you want from chic beachfront properties, private pools, children friendly yard spaces, nannies, wedding venues, tennis courts, just to name a few - you name it, Jamaica has a villa to match it. Any group size, any occasion, any amenity and most 12

importantly the range of villas available in Jamaica are quite vast. From highend luxury to blissful on a budget, from villas with a view to villas on the ocean. Now depending on the size and level luxury villa you choose, here’s some of what you can expect from the Jamaican Villa Life. SPACE: Your villa will be your home away from home, with the comforts of a kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining, inviting and cozy living rooms, deluxe air conditioned bedrooms, lush green gardens, a pool, a butler, a cook and all the elements for a relaxing holiday. Space is a big factor and the villa all yours. PERSONALIZED: From the moment you arrive you will see that every detail of your stay is thoughtfully and seamlessly arranged. One of the most impressive elements is the attentive and professional staff that caters to your every whim. Don’t fancy cooking? Hate having to wake up early to catch breakfast hours? They don’t expect you to. From the making of a menu, the shopping list, preparation of food, clean up, laundry, bar service - your staff takes care of it all, on your time with true Jamaican hospitality. I should add that if the cook at your villa has been around the kitched once or twice, with a Jamaican menu on hand, you’re in for a special treat as real Jamaican food is to die for! What more could one want or need? Many of the staff have been with their villas for many years and are a large part of the villa experience; the villa staff is polite, unpretentious and authentic and will give you a good sample for the warm peoples that Jamaicans are. PRIVACY: Sharing a pool is so overrated! Say goodbye to scrambling for sun loungers and being splashed by frolicking strangers. At a villa, privacy is everything! There is nothing like looking out at the lavish views from your villa and feeling as though you have the entire island all to yourself. We could tell you all sorts of reasons why privacy has its advantages, but we’re sure you’re already figuring these out for yourself… Topless tanning anyone? The point is, you have the freedom to do whatever your heart desires without being seen or disturbed , morning, evening and night. Relax and unwind to the sound of crashing waves and cheerful birds in the distance. Take advice from the WINTER 2015/16
legendary Bob Marley himself and “turn your lights down low and pull your window curtain”, sip champagne under the stars and coffee while the sun comes up. Who said doing absolutely nothing wasn’t enjoyable? TURN UP: I hope we didn’t just take you off into thinking its all slumber, because if you want to turn up – nothing turns up more than a nice villa party! Remember, no one is there to bother you and no one there for you to bother. For those coming as a group be sure to update your mp3 playlist. There are no better memories than drinking the day away with Jamaica’s finest rum, in the company of your finest friends, whining your waistlines as the sun sets in perfect paradise. If you fancy venturing out during the days, your villa concierge will plan a fun filled itinerary jam-packed with Jamaica’s most exciting tours and excursions and a personal driver to take you wherever you wish to wander. VALUE: Now if you’re thinking that all of this splendidness must be expensive, you’d be pleasantly surpri sed to know that villas can of fer exceptional value for money considering the sheer space and added amenities available, which you can opt in or out for depending on your budget. Again, villas in Jamaica range from luxurious mansions right down to quaint cottages and everything in between. You can rest assured your villa agent will make sure all are up to quality standards. Villas are usually rented weekly rather than per person and or per night so traveling with a group and splitting the costs makes villas a very reasonably priced option, not to mention all prices are given upfront and you won’t get any surprises of hidden or extra fees. Private villas in Jamaica are an ideal combination of five star amenities combined with the comforts and familiarity of home - the ultimate choice for a privately customized vacation that’s sure to cleanse the body, mind and soul. When ready to book your villa vacation in Jamaica, we recommend you go visit JamaicaVillaLife.Com or contact them at US 786 453 6411 or JA 876 579 6996 to speak to one of their qualified villa expert who will assist you in experiencing the ultimate vacation. t long last, the Caribbean’s number one travel destination has its very own Tourism Visitor Television – THE JAMAICA TRAVEL CHANNEL! In July 2015, the Jamaica Travel Channel (JTC) launched in over 26,000 hotel and villa rooms (approximately 95% of all hotels and villas on island), as well as in 70% of all local cable homes along with a web stream currently receiving an unprecedented 100,000 hits per month. Through a strategic partnership with the Jamaica Tourist Board, the channel also streams from the front page WINTER 2015/16
of the visitjamaica.com website, easily one of the most popular tourism websites in the Caribbean and is set to broadcast on large digital screens in all the major sea ports, Falmouth, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. “The results to date have exceeded our expectations. Between the many ‘thank you(s)’ via email and social media we’ve received from our hundreds of thousands of viewers, to the strong and positive feed-back from Jamaican business owners who have seen the results in their numbers after only a couple of months, are way beyond what we had anticipated” said company Director Kimani Robinson. So much so, the JTC has now partnered to produce this very magazine, the “Jamaica Travel Magazine” now the largest distributed tourism print media in Jamaica with a phone app scheduled to come on board in the first quarter of 2016. But back to the channel… The first thing a tourist does upon entering their hotel room for their week’s stay, is to turn on the “AC” and next, the television. According to a Neilson/Hilton report, 67% of all tourists then turn to watch the visitor channel. Thereafter, 58% then make a decision to engage and attend at least one of the excursions they’ve seen. It is also surmised that a visitor TV channel is the most effective means to create awareness and demand for products and services beyond the hotel gates. How better to explain than to show – or as it’s said at JTC, “once you look, you book”. The JTC showcases excursions, things to do, places to go, what to eat, who to ask, where to shop etc., and then points all guests to their hotel tour desks where they can pay for same. For smaller hotels and villas, JTC has set up a hotline number to assist visitors. A huge problem has been solved. “The Jamaica Travel Channel gives us a WINTER 2015/16
centralized way to speak to visitors once they are on the island. It also allows us to better showcase the diversity of our tourism product by displaying elements of Jamaica and entities that don’t necessarily have the capacity to showcase themselves by advertising directly to our visitors,” stated Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, the Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill Since its launch some of the more known brands that have already partnered with the channel include Island Routes, Dunn’s River, Green Grotto Caves, Budget Car Rental, Mystic Mountain, Jamaica Tours Limited, Spring Garden Restaurant, Kiuki Tours, Appleton Estate and Appleton Tours, Marley Coffee, Walkerswood, a few Duty Free shops, just to name a few. Many of them are just as excited about the exposure they receive overseas from the 100,000 hits a month via the web-stream as much as they are about being in 95% of all hotels on island. In response to the success of the channel being placed on the JTB’s website streaming to hundreds of thousands monthly, JTB’s director of Tourism Mr. Paul Pennicook says that, “Media visibility is an integral part of marketing a tourism product, and today’s travellers are relying to a large extent on internet based platforms for destination information. The Jamaica Tourist Board is therefore pleased to partner with the Jamaica Travel Channel on this strategy as the potential for increased international visibility is excellent.” With a state of the art phone app underway - for the more tech friendly visitor, the Jamaica Travel Channel is by far the most widely distributed media platform in Jamaica, speaking and advising tourists on how to have fun while on the island. It’s all there - turn to channel 90 in your hotel room and you will be pleasantly surprised. A YAH SO NICE

GOLFING IN JAMAICA Written By: Katrina Baylis
J
amaica, an island of endless sunshine, beautiful beaches, friendly laid back people and some of the finest resorts also makes its mark as the premier golfing destination of the Caribbean. Like many leisure activities in Jamaica, golfing provides another opportunity for the island’s unique character, personality and beauty to shine through. Over the years, Jamaica has become a popular golfing destination and it is easy to see why; playing on world class golf courses against a backdrop of lush vegetation, glorious white sands, turquoise views of the ocean and of course, after all that action relaxing with a cup of the finest coffee or cocktail. The aesthetics of any given location is always a major consideration when golfers set out to plan a golf vacation. Jamaica is one of those places where the scenery is beyond compare, and the golf courses…well, they are just as good. One of the most exciting golfing destinations is in Montego Bay, the second largest city in Jamaica located in the north western section of the island. Montego Bay offers an enchanting experience with its range of luxurious resorts and rich quality of courses to choose from. It is considered a classic gem for the travelling golfer to experience the glorified cluster of three championship courses all within about 10-15 minutes drive of each other and just a short drive from the Donald Sangster International Airport. Even the many cruise ship guests who visit Montego Bay just for the day take advantage of these standout courses close to the city. The three courses which are members of the Rose Hall Golf Association offer guests exclusive access to 54 holes of great golf at the Half Moon, The White Witch and Cinnamon Hill. The Half Moon Golf course opened in 1961 and was designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones Sr., but later underwent a modernization exercise in 2005, with Rulewich creating an even greater masterpiece. The course has gone on to host many PGA professional golf tournaments, and was named Jamaica’s Best Golf Resort in 2014 at the IAGTO World Travel Awards as well as Jamaica’s Best Golf Resort at the World Golfers Awards. The White Witch is probably the most famous golf course on the island, and is also known for its historic tale and part in Jamaica’s rich culture. It was named after the White Witch of Rose Hall, Annie Palmer, who was an early 19th century mistress 20

on a former sugar plantation. She is believed to have practiced voodoo, abused her slaves and murdered her three husbands. Legend has it that Annie’s ghost still roams the grounds, creating an alluring mystique that has fascinated not only Jamaicans but visitors for generations. The common phrase used by golfers, “Blame the White Witch”, can be heard when playing this challenging course. Despite the supposed Annie Palmer effect, the White Witch course has been described as magnificent. It was designed by Robert von Hagge and his partner Rick Baril and is set on over 200 acres of green hills with 16 of its 18 holes overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The final of this great trio, another of Robert von Hagge and Baril’s designs, is Cinnamon Hill. Cinnamon Hill has a historic tale attached to it, as well as it winds through what used to be a sugar plantation with a great house built in 1747. This historic and beautiful resort has elevations that give a sense of both links and inland golf, and is listed amongst the “Best in the World” by Golfers Magazine. Like the others in the trio, it has panoramic views of majestic blues and lush greens to be enjoyed around this challenging game of 18 holes. Just outside of Montego Bay in the parish of Hanover is the world renowned Tryall Golf Club. The resort is world famous, known for alluring and inspiring people to perform their best with its exceptional sporting facilities. Jamaica’s SouthCoast Written By: Laura Henzell
E
quidistant (approximate travel time is two and a half hours) from Montego Bay and Kingston, Jamaica’s rugged, undeveloped South Coast with dark golden sand beaches and desert-like landscapes, beckons the traveller seeking a Jamaica off the beaten track. The main attraction here: uninterrupted starry nights, smoldering sunsets and bay after bay of secluded coastline just waiting to be discovered. For this visitors trek to the sleepy seaside village of Treasure Beach awaits a series of six continuously joined bays, varied accommodation options and the warm welcome of authentic Jamaican hospitality. One of the most popular hotels here is Jakes Hotel, Villas and Spa- the south’s original bohemian getaway where laidback luxury and beach-chic barefoot vibes are the order of the day. Featuring an assortment of stand alone cottages, cabanas and rooms overlooking the sea, nestled in nature or elevated with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea;any feature unique outdoor showers, some claw footed seaside bathtubs and roof decks. Each designed with a special artistic flare inspired by self-taught architect and designer Sally Henzell, whose husband Perry Henzell wrote anddirected the seminal Jamaican film The Harder They Come. The hotel also features a full service spa, a restaurant, bar, sister property (across the road) Jack Sprat Shack and destination restaurant Jack Sprat that serves the best seafood and pizza for miles. For larger groups who want a bit more space and privacy, the hotel also rents several villas including the luxurious and generously appointed, off property, four-bedroom, Seaweed Villa. Perched on a bluff with near 360 degree views of the sea, Seaweed’s unique design includes locally made and inspired furnishings, an infinity pool and hot tub, a separate two bedroom cottage with a plunge pool and access to a semi private beach. Another property, also on the sea, but less than 10 minutes walking distance from Jakes is Calabash Bay Villa. Well appointed with all the amenities needed for a comfortable, family friendly getaway. The property also features ample grounds and outdoor entertaining areas perfect for weddings, reunions and other special events. But the south isn’t just for relaxing. A short boat ride out to sea will take you to the world famous Pelican Bar – a drinking outpost a quarter of a mile offshore, pulling guests as far as Whitehouse for ice cold Red Stripes, friendly domino games, snorkeling, swimming. There’s also a cadre of fishermen with tall tales to tell. Make sure to tack on a trip up the nearby Black River, the largest protected wetland area in the Caribbean. It’s a great way for nature lovers to go on wildlife safari and see some of the 100 species of birds that make their homes in the mangroves and marshlands; not to mention the possibility to see the occasional crocodile basking in the sun. Another popular day trip is a visit to the multi-tiered YS Falls where guests have the option to swim in three different natural pools, take a canopy tour above the falls, or swing Tarzan-style from the highest accessible point and jump into the pools below. Set in the middle of a working cattle and horse farm, theselesser known falls, with their secluded location offer a more personal experience with one of nature’s most beautiful phenomenons.

RUMBUSTIOUS Written By: Simply Risa

e selects his drink of choice – “a whites” and then instructs the man next to him to do the same. He then instructs the man after that and soon a round of loud chatter, confessions, bantering, jokes and several belly episodes of belly full laughter begins. If we haven’t already lost you at this point, a recording of the following is sure to prove one thing… you are at a Jamaican Bar. What better place to call home or to visit than the island rumoured to have more bars per square mile than any other country in the world? One of the many bastions of Jamaican culture, is the local connoisseur’s discerning palate which delights in the subtle nuances of oak wood and sugar used in the production of Jamaica’s very own. It was in the 15th century when sugarcane and the art of distilling were first introduced to Jamaica. With its perfect climate and fertile soil, Jamaica was the perfect place for sugar cane to flourish. As the centuries passed and the art of distilling refined, Jamaica gained the enviable reputation of being the source of the finest rum in the world. The theory holds that in the process of manufacturing rum, the raw fiery alcohol was said to ‘light a blaze’ and provoke unruly RUMbustious behaviour. This romantic notion of how rum got its name is one that might compel you to agree that rum and the Jamaican go hand in hand, the spirit of a people being captured and bottled. The island boasts many rum manufacturers, and Appleton Estate is without a doubt Jamaica’s most popular and considered its finest. With the island’s largest and oldest distillery blending for over 260 years, generations of experts have

been producing rums of exceptional quality on the island, continuing the tradition of hand crafting liquid amber with complex flavours such as vanilla, coffee, cocoa and hazelnut. Since 1749, all Appleton Estate rums have been produced from a single 11,000-acre estate high in the Nassau Valley in the island’s parish of St. Elizabeth. The valley boasts ideal conditions for growing sugar cane, its unique micro-climate providing warm and sunny mornings before the afternoons’ gentle rain showers. The soil of the Nassau Valley is extremely fertile and fed by exceptionally soft water naturally filtered by the limestone hills of the Cockpit Country. This allows the estate’s varying species of sugar cane to flourish before providing the unique character imparted on Appleton Estate Jamaica rums that reaches your glass. Unique natural resources coupled with legacy and tradition in the distillation process through methods handed down since the inception of Appleton Estate. Go beyond the bottle on the Appleton Estate Rum Tour and journey through time to learn more about the history of rum. Enjoy a guided tour of the distillery to see the copper pot stills that impart their distinctive character to the rums and visit the ageing house where rums rest sound in oak barrels. About 17 varieties are available for sampling at the estate’s John Wray Tavern, which makes great for lowering inhibitions and allowing for a wonderfully fun tour. The Appleton Estate welcomes individuals and tour groups from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm. Patrons must be 18 and over. WINTER 2015/16

ISLAND VACAY UNIFORM Shorts, t-shirt, slippers and your sunglasses. This is all you’ll need – and oh, of course, your swimwear. You’re in the tropics, beat the heat, try and stay as cool and as easy breezy as possible. Jamaicans are a very unpretentious people anyways and so take pleasure in wearing any and everything comfortable and relaxing. Let it all hang out – we won’t judge. ISLAND HUMOUR One of the many positive and endearing qualities we have as Jamaicans is our humour. No topic is out of bounds and or too reverent to be laughed at. In fact, the funniest jokes you will hear are of topics that are supposedly off limits according to proper etiquette and social graces. What is Political Correctness? The PC code doesn’t mean much here as Jamaican’s call it as they see it, very un-hypocritical and with a flair for the dramatics and an insatiable desire to bring laughter and amusement to friends, you are sure to hear a story or two, of real life situations with real life people, that will have you in complete laughter. As all Jamaican’s know and do, as you much as you laugh at another mans misfortune, be prepared to laugh at yourself when your time comes around. ISLAND TIME 1) The One Hour Rule: Besides your transportation arrangements and a scheduled hotel or excursion appointment, if you happen to get invited to any other local event, party or happening, don’t be left wondering why a single person hasn’t shown up at the announced start time. It’s not because the host is unpopular or the event is a fail. Rather, Jamaicans usually arrive a tad bit late… depending on the event, up to an hour. Yes, this unwritten rule is Island Time and it is strategic and done purposefully. Ask any Jamaican why they don’t show up on time and they will tell you, “because no one will be there at that time”. 2) The Soon Come Rule: When asked the questions, “What time are you coming back” or ask say a waitress at a local restaurant “How much longer”, never expect an exact time. What you should expect is the popular answer to most questions time related, “soon come”. Jamaicans all have their own definition of what “soon come” means, but one thing’s for sure, it’s never at the time you consider soon. This rebellion against time and urgency is contagious. After a few days on the island you will catch it. The symptoms may include falling asleep on the beach to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore, no longer paying attention to your watch or leaving your phone inside your room. Physical changes may include extreme relaxation, sleep marks, larger smiles and even a well engineered sun tan. Welcome to Island Time!
ISLAND LIFE Written By: Kerrie Baylis

ust landed in Jamaica? Need some sun, sand and sea? Looking to escape the cold or just need a relaxing getaway? Whatever your reason for coming, we’re glad you’re here! We welcome you to Jamaica’s “Island Life”. Things move at a different pace here; it’s a bit slower, the wind is gentle and easy, the days are longer and the vibe is as we say, “irie man”. It’s therefore no surprise that when you think of Jamaica, you think “no problem” as though Jamaica has its fair share of challenges, we still find time to smile and say hello, to love be loved and to wait on our moment to shine... As such, your biggest worries in Jamaica should be whether you put on enough sun block or if you will oversleep and miss this endless summer. So if you’re wondering what we mean when we say “Jamaica Island Life”, here’s a quick 101 of a couple things you need to know and expect 30
JAMAICA TRAVEL
A YAH SO NICE
ISLAND NIGHTS In the daytime, Jamaicans are very laid back, easy going, with a “no problem man” outlook. But then like owls do, we seem to come alive at nighttime. With the most rum bars and public musical sound systems per capita anywhere in the world and music running through our veins and the roots, rock, reggae rhythm in our souls – we transform. Jamaicans love to entertain, be entertained and have a good time. You will find a Jamaican party in any town on any day of the week – and be prepared to go until the sun comes up. ISLAND SUNDAYS On Sundays you may wonder where all the Island’s inhabitants are. The place is quiet and almost everywhere is closed. Sundays in Jamaica usually means one of the three things: church, family time or time to hit thebeach! In fact, it can mean all three on any given Sunday! HAPPIEST PEOPLE ALIVE Jamaica ranks very high on the United Nations World Happiness Report for having the happiest people alive. When interacting with locals you will quickly observe our very pleasant and exuberant nature, with persons often singing, laughing and sharing even the little they sometimes have. With the absence of certain first world luxuries and conveniences and with a few social and economic challenges, many wonder why Jamaicans are so happy. Karen Blixen once wrote some very wise words, “The cure for everything: salt water… in one form or another. Sweat, tears or the salty sea.” Since we have all three in abundance it may be safe to say that Ms Blixen has found the answer. WINTER 2015/16
