A Note From Lauren Mardi Gras 2015. My current status: four balls down, three more to go. Thank God it hasn’t been as cold as last year. The 2014 season went down as one of the worst we’ve ever had weather-wise, and Fat Tuesday was positively frigid. The Déjà Vu du Monde float was actually iced over, and we decided not to roll, which I believe has never happened before. But prior to that, I’d gotten sick. In my 2014 MG Issue Note, I specifically stated “I’ve never missed a ball and I don’t intend to miss any this weekend.” Well, not only did I miss a ball, I also missed the Gala AND the Krewe of Krewes parade. And that, too, has never happened before. Historically, the weather is usually pretty bad on Fat Tuesday. You can count on clouds and often, rain. The first year I rode on Déjà Vu’s float, I was a Duchess, and part of my costume was a huge walrus head (don’t ask) trimmed with extravagant ostrich feathers. The head was mounted on the front of the float as a decoration, but around 15 minutes into the parade, the rain starting falling and Walrus Head had to be covered with a trash bag so it wouldn’t be ruined. Not the look we were going for.

The coldest Fat Tuesday that I ever rode was the year I was Queen of Krewe de la Famille. This is a very traditional Krewe and court members are required to wear full costumes and collars throughout the parade—so I couldn’t bundle up to keep warm. Worse, the gorgeous silver Queen’s chalice that held my Crown and Coke turned my hand into an ice cube as the temperature dropped. But my drink was perfectly chilled and the ice never melted! We hope you’ve enjoyed Mardi Gras 2015. That’s what it’s all about in Southwest Louisiana--enjoying life to the fullest. And thank you for letting us bring you our sixth annual Lake Charles Mardi Gras Special Edition!

“We are very proud of our local Mardi Gras, which brings people to Southwest Louisiana from all over the country. Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana is a communitywide celebration and a family affair. Over the years, it has grown remarkably into the standout festival it is today — the second largest in the state! My very best wishes to all for a safe and memorable 2015 Mardi Gras in Lake Charles and all of Southwest Louisiana.” 04 FEBRUARY 16, 2015

On the evening of January 10, Krewe des Bons Amis celebrated their tenth year as a Mardi Gras Krewe at the newest facility in the area, the West Calcasieu Event Center in Sulphur. As it was the Krewe’s tenth year, the entertainment for the evening was favorite skits and routines from the past years. The presentation began with a memorable skit from the 2010 ball. Alan Jackson (portrayed by Craig Arabie) and Jimmy Buffet (portrayed by Michael Allen) entertained guests to the song “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere.” President Charles Cubbage welcomed the guests to the ball and introduced the 2014 King and Queen, Steven and Tracy Collins as they made their final walk as royalty. King Henry IX and Queen Anne IX represented Krewe des Bons Amis well during their reign and were bid a fond farewell. President Cubbage turned the microphone over to Justin Morris, the Master of Ceremonies. His first duty was to introduce the Ball Co-Captains for this tenth year, Leslie Cubbage and Jody Fawvor. As they arrived in the famous phone booth, the Bons Amis time travel began. They traveled through the room looking for likely subjects for their project, and wearing the fullest tutus ever seen. Leslie Cubbage and her husband Charles reside in Sulphur and are two of the founding members of Krewe des Bons Amis. They are the proud parents of 4-year-old twins, Kaden and Kasidee. Leslie is executive director of SouthernCare Hospice. She has held various positions in the Krewe such as ball chairman, president and vice president and was instrumental in the development of the Krewe website (www. krewedesbonsamis.com) and photo archives. Leslie holds the title of Queen Anne VI in 2011 and Duchess in 2010. Jody Fawvor is employed by Phillips 66 and resides in LeBleu Settlement. She is a charter member of the Krewe and is very active, holding various positions over the years, including ball decorating chairman, Captain and Co-Captain. The Captains paid homage to the present King Henry X and Queen Anne X. As the phone booth landed, the doors opened and King Henry X and Queen Anne X, Michael and Anna Allen, were introduced to the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Queen Anne’s dress was a perfect combination of royal purple

and blue, depending on the light. The exquisite beading extended from the shoulders to the plunging neckline and on to the waist of the chiffon and satin gown. King Henry’s ensemble included a black tuxedo with a vest matching the Queen’s gown. The King and Queen are residents of Lake Charles and have been married 17 years. The King graduated from Iowa High School and McNeese State University and has been employed by Fugro Consultants for the past 12 years. The couple have been members of Krewe des Bons Amis for seven years and were Duke and Duchess of the Moonlight in 2011. Anna has served as secretary and Michael is currently serving his second term as sergeant at arms. After the King and Queen were seated, the Captains traveled to the early years of the Krewe. Representing 2006 were Jimmy and Jackie Bastow, King Henry I and Queen Anne I with the theme of “Down on the Bayou.” The second year King Henry II and Queen Anne II were Craig and Nicole Arabie, representing 2007 and “A Night on the Red Carpet.” In 2008, the theme was “The Wild Wild West” with Tommy and Katie Breaux as King Henry III and Queen Anne III. These past Kings and Queens were recognized and introduced. A favorite moment from the early years of the Krewe was the skit “Singing in the Rain” with Michelle Gaspard, Cassie Robbins, Suzanne May and Carrie Cubbage participating. The routine was complete with embellished umbrellas, rain ponchos and rubber boots set to a rendition of the song by the cast of Glee. The telephone booth traveled further down the date line to mid-decade and to 2009 when

David Barber and Amy Gerard were King Henry IV and Queen IV and the theme was “Unmasking the Legends of Mardi Gras.” In 2010, Judy and Dennis Lavergne were King Henry V and Queen V representing “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere.” Charles and Leslie Cubbage graced the Krewe in 2011 as King Henry VI and Queen Anne VI with the theme of “Moonlight and Magnolias.” The past Kings and Queens were introduced and thanked for their participation in the Krewe. To reminisce about the middle years of the Krewe, the skit “Harper Valley PTA” by Jeannie C. Riley was re-enacted starring Cassie Robbins and Carrie Cubbage as the Widowed Wife and Narrator, and Craig Arabie and Jimmy and Jackie Bastow as the PTA committee. Rounding out the last three years of Royalty were Matt and Leslie Gillespie, 2012 King Henry VII and Queen Anne VII representing “Going Back to the Eighties.” In 2013, “Mardi Gras in Black and White” was the theme when Brad and Diana Hebert were King Henry XIII and Queen Anne VIII. Last year in 2014, King Henry IX and Queen Anne IX were Steven and Tracy Collins who represented “Wide World of Sports.” These Kings and Queens were introduced and thanked for their participation to the Krewe. Ending the program was a crowd favorite from last year, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” starring Christine Draper and Hailey Draper in Sumo Wrestler outfits, twerking and gyrating to the a mix of songs by DJ Kool, Sir Mix a lot and Ester Dean. The group of Royalty representing 10 years of great fun and friendship joined the members and guests in the Royal Toast to the new King and Queen. Immediately after the toast, the Second Line Dance began. Members and guests partied on to the sounds of the Kadillacs and Southern DJ Productions. The Krewe de Charlie Sioux was sanctioned by the state of Louisiana in 1997. That same year, Lake Charles and Sioux City officially became Sister Cities at a twinning ceremony in Lake Charles. Members consist of Sioux City, IA and Lake Charles residents. Each city has its own Krewe president and Ball Captain. Sioux City members come to Lake Charles for Mardi Gras and Lake Charles members travel to Sioux City the week of July Fourth and bring Mardi Gras to Siouxland in the form of a gala, parade and Zydeco concert. The purpose of the Krewe is to promote Mardi Gras and share cultural experiences as well as develop tourism in each city. This Mardi Gras season completes the 20th year that Krewe members have traveled back and forth between the two cities, and the 17th year of presentation of a King, Queen and Court. Krewe Déjà Vu du Monde held their 26th Annual Ball on January 17 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The theme was “Clue, A Murder Mystery!” Master of Ceremonies Gayle Marshall presented the hard-working board of directors: President Tom Price, VP/Co-Captain Julie Babineaux, Secretary/Treasurer Lauren de Albuquerque, Krewe Reps Katherine Petty and Gayle Cline and Advisory Board Member Jennifer Gill. The Royal Court of 2014, King and Queen XXV Mike and Susan McHugh, Duke and Duchess Rex and Dina Royer and Duke and Duchess Larry and Carole Williamson, representing the Lord of the Rings, made their final promenade. And then the fun began! In the board game “Clue,” an unexpected murder occurs. Players roll the dice and receive a clue card. As the game progresses and each clue is revealed, the object is to discover the place, weapon and culprit of the crime. During the 2015 presentation, the Krewe played the game of Clue and it was up to the audience to solve the

mystery! The King and Queen of Murder Mystery were King George Jacobson and Queen Margaret Steele. Since being Duke on the Krewe’s Royal Court as the Pharaoh in 2013, King George has been busy. He was honored with being crowned King XVI of Krewe de Charlie Sioux during the Sister City annual celebration in Sioux City, Iowa in 2013. During this reign, he stayed busy working his 9-to5 job, creating custom artwork and Mardi Gras costumes with his Jacobson Designs business, being treasurer for the Krewe de Charlie Sioux, spending time with friends and taking time out to float in the pool. This past year, he handed off his Charlie Sioux throne, started a new employment venture with City Savings Bank, and most importantly, got to meet his sister for the first time in 38 years. 2014 was a great year but 2015 will be awesome with this honor Krewe Déjà Vu du Monde has bestowed on him. Queen Margaret currently resides in Baton Rouge where she is an analyst for the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor of science in chemistry with an emphasis in forensic chemistry and forensic biology. Originally from Pineville, Kentucky, she moved to Lake Charles where she worked for the Southwest Louisiana Crime Lab in 2007. During her years in the Lake Area she attended the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, was a member of Fusion5, and enjoyed volunteering with ACTS Theatre, where she also served a term on their board. Queen Margaret was also active in supporting various charities and local art events. Today, she is expanding her volunteer work in her new hometown with Woman’s Hospital and their “Busts for Breast Cancer” fundraising event. Margaret continues to support the arts in Baton Rouge attending theatre, music, and artist events. A past Duchess for Déjà

Vu du Monde, Margaret enjoys traveling, spending quality time with her fur babies (Kassie and Brownie), and visiting her family in Kentucky. After the new King and Queen were presented, it was time for the Toast of the Monarchs. But as the past King and Queen left the podium, Past Queen Susan staggered and collapsed. What happened? Is she sick? No! wait! She is dead! Who could have murdered the late Queen? Was it Captain Phil de Albuquerque as Colonel Mustard? Weapon of choice: A pistol! Captain Phil was born and raised in Michigan, graduated from Michigan State University with an engineering degree, and then ran off and became a Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus clown! He moved to Lake Charles 11 years ago from Boston. He owns Chateau du Calcasieu Event Center and is a contractor at Fort Polk. The president of the Children’s Museum board, he is a member for the Family and Youth Council board and the Buccaneers of Lake Charles. Since Phil is always out and about and clowning around, you can find him hosting “What’s Happening Lake Charles!” on Fox29 every Thursday. Or perhaps it was Co-Captain Julie Lynette Babineaux as Ms. Peacock. Weapon of choice: A knife! Julie is the daughter of Sigmund and Yvonne Babineaux of Oberlin. She has one son, US Air Force Sgt. Justin Chatman, who is stationed in Salinas, California with his wife Senita Chatman, and a grand dog Sophie Mae, an Alaskan Husky. Julie is employed by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, 14th Judicial District Court, Division C, is a member of BAAK (Benefiting Area At-risk Kids) and attends Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Maybe it was Krewe Lieutenant Dr. Bruce Maerhofer as Reverend Green. Weapon of choice: A candlestick! Bruce hails from New York State and attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He

and his wife Monika came to the Pelican State 24 years ago. A retired chiropractor, he is a member of the Buccaneers and the Parrotheads. He and his wife were King and Queen of the Krewe Déjà vu Du Monde in 2005. They are also members of Krewe de La Famille and were Duke and Duchess in 2014. The next suspect was Duchess Wendy Lambert as Ms. White. Weapon of choice: A lead pipe! Duchess Wendy is a third generation Austinite. She grew up with five sisters and a brother and her immediate family is now up to 52 people and growing! She’s contributed with her two sons and six grandkids. Wendy loves listening to the live music Austin has to offer along with reading, traveling and checking things off her bucket list. Her late husband loved Mardi Gras and they had planned many adventures together. His request to her was to live her life to the fullest. Being on Court is in his honor. The final suspect was Duchess Sherrene Cook as Ms. Scarlet. Weapon of choice: poison! Duchess Sherrene was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. She attended McNeese State University and worked as a recruiter throughout Louisiana and Texas. Sherrene is now retired and gives her time to multiple charities throughout Beaumont and Florida. She also serves on the boards of the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Foundation, the Lamar University Cardinal Club, the Oaks District Historical Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for the city of Beaumont. She is the mother of Justin Moore and the grandmother of Regan Cook. It was now time to guess who murdered the late Queen. Each suspect stepped forward, and by the sound of the applause as each name was called, the audience made known their solution. The answer was Ms. Scarlet, who slipped her poison into the chalice of the late Queen right before the

royal toast! The Ball began with the Krewe and guests partying to “The Issue” from Baton Rouge. Sound and music were supplied by Deep South Productions; photography by Victor Monsour. Special thanks to John Chavanne for the fabulous costumes and the Mystery Dancers of the Ashworth School of Performing Arts.

The Krewe of Illusions’ 26th annual Mardi Gras Extravaganza was held Saturday, February 14 in the Rosa Hart Theatre. This year’s performance, “Exhibiting Illusions,” brought to life various museum exhibits. Guests were welcomed by museum visuals at the start of the presentation. After formal announcements and introductions by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, the show opened with a tribute to past Ball Captains. The show was dedicated to their collective 26 years of creative design and leadership. The Krewe crest was lowered and set the stage for the Extravaganza. The evening was drastically disturbed by the Egyptian vizier Imhotep. Unsure of what decade he had entered, his Egyptian language changed to French dialect, then to Spanish with a hint of Creole and finally ending in English, informing the crowd of his curse on the show. The curtains opened and the audience was greeted by one of the world’s most sought-after museum pieces, Tiny the Dinosaur, who graced the stage to the sounds of “In the Air Tonight” and setting the mood for the evening.

Illusions King XXVI AJ Smith represented the regal history of presidents and royal monarchs and Queen XXVI Diana Sepulveda represented the rich history of Egypt’s greatest royal families. Their towering platform costumes were royal blue, silver, and gold, banked in feathers of the same color and adorned with hundreds of crystals and lighted halos. Museum history was depicted on their collars. The King wore a structural hand-stoned brocade suit in traditional royal blue with a phoenix on his adjunct collar. The Queen’s dress was priceless gold brocade adorned with a gold sequin organza overlay and she carried the falcon, the Egyptian symbol of power, on her collar. Royal entertainment was provided by the LaGrange High School NROTC, theatre and choral department. A moving tribute to the 911 museum was a surprise dedication to the King, along with a Motown-style dedication to the Queen. The major costumes of the Royal Court represented famous museums and antiquities. “Academia Gallantry” was represented by Krewe of Illusions’ youth. Janie Broussard

Mardi Gras 2015

and Isaac Thomas represented statues and the monuments of Italy dressed in period Roman togas draped in silver and gold with gobs of white feathers. After leaving Florence, the audience traveled to France. What’s a tour of museums if you can’t be amused by the sarcastic smile of Mona Lisa? Donny King represented the Louvre as “the Artist formally Known as,” and stunned the audience as he carried various priceless artifacts of the Louvre with him. His costume was powder blue velvet with a belled sleeve shirt and burnt velvet vest. Per the Queen’s request, Illusions stopped in New York City and visited the colorful MET Museum highlighting the noted Anna Wintour Fashion Institute. Jackie Ellis was revealed as the Skyline of New York City, perfectly structured and adorned with red light Siam crystals and sequins. A lavish back-piece was covered with symbols signifying the history of fashion and sewing. After an introduction of the many dual roles women played in “herstory,” Rocky Landry brought Amelia Earhart and her journey through the skies to life. Wearing the traditional bomber jacket with tights, she carried a massive side plane engine with much dazzle and crystal bling and a back piece designed to take flight. Out of the shadows of the deep, Illusions tangled the audience with a spectacle of what happens when the aquarium closes. Club Tentacles came alive with dancing sea urchins, starfish and eels. There was a live performance by a school of fish, an octopus, and of course, no under the sea performance can be complete without Sebastian. The water grew rough and CoCaptain Susan Clark, festive in her radiant purple and fuchsia sea creature outfit, was rescued from a sea of jellyfish. The new Ball Captain was introduced in a unique way. After a short video clip, there was a sudden blackout accompanied by songs playing as if there were a massive power mix-up. In an all-white illumination light show, the new Ball Captain Brandrick Levy floated from the orchestra pit and jammed onstage with his fellow sea creatures. He wore a full sequined iridescent fish tail with a rustic blue overlay. His back piece was a coral reef with various lost treasures found on the sea floor. The Royal Promenade ended with Krewe members and major costumes brought back to the stage for a final bow. The Krewe and their guests Second Lined to the exhibition hall where everyone danced to the rocking sounds of Laurel and the Electric Circus. The production was supported by Krewe of Illusions’ board of directors and the members who worked as performers, dancers, singers, scriptwriters, backstage hands, sound supervisors and technical masters, along with the talented students of LaGrange High School’s choral and theatrical departments.
