The 2020 Mardi Gras Posters 2020 SWLA Poster

For the Southwest Louisiana poster, Alexander tied history, tradition and South Louisiana together in a timeless piece of art that represents our wholesome Mardi Gras traditions. The focal point of the design is a woman enjoying a cold lager, signifying the laissez les bon temps rouler attitude of our area. On her mask is the Crying Eagle Brewery Candice Alexander logo. The significance of that name dates back to the Atakapa tribe, who were living in this area when the settlers arrived. The tribal chief was Crying Eagle, and in his native language, the name sounded like “Calcasieu.” The woman is resting near the pistols on the walkway of the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge. The pistols represent Pirate Jean Lafitte. The poster shines a light on the future economic revitalization of the area, and the history that brought us here.

2020 Washington DC Poster Candice Alexander is known for portraying Louisiana’s rich history and culture in her artwork. By designing the Mystick Krewe of Louisiana’s Washington DC Mardi Gras poster, Alexander mixes mediums and threedimensional elements to bring the history of the land to life. Throughout the design, there is double symbolism pointing to both the legend of Jean Lafitte and the history of the Acadians through the story of Evangeline. The background and outer layer of the design represents the US Constitution, symbolizing patriotic history. The focal point of this piece is an enigmatic woman, symbolically representing two women’s tales. The first is Catherine LeBleu, wife of political exile Charles Sallier. Her alleged love affair with the most infamous pirate and privateer in the area, Jean Lafitte, caused a jealous rage in her husband. Legend has it that Charles fired a shot at his wife, which supposedly ricocheted off her amethyst brooch, similar to the brooch on the chest of the woman in the poster. The woman could also be Evangeline, the main character in Henry Longfellow’s famous poem about a woman desperate to find her beloved, Gabriel, after the British deported the Acadians to Louisiana during the mid 1700s. Her Mardi Gras mask is shaped from the Louisiana State symbol, the fleur de lis. The cabin on the bank represents the oldest home in Southwest Louisiana, the Sallier estate. The ship could be associated with the sad voyage of the Acadians, as well as the piracy of Jean Lafitte. Alexander’s handmade replicas of the Louisiana State Capitol door knobs are embedded in the frame, which is made of Louisiana cypress. Embedded in the frame are words from the poem Evangeline. Alexander’s hyper-creativity has produced a piece of art that portrays legends of Louisiana love stories, infamous personalities, foundational patriotism all while drawing from the tradition of the greatest celebration the state has ever known, Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana was formed in 1986 by a group of community leaders, including Ann Monlezun. Rebecca Moss has been involved in the organization for 13 years, serving as parade chair and secretary and on the executive board for the last 11 years. Most people don’t understand the amount of work that goes into putting on this festival every year. The nonprofit organization is strictly made up of volunteers. There are approximately 65 members of MGSW, called “Green Jackets” after the green blazers they wear at events. “We put together one of the largest festivals in our area,” Moss says. “We are the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the state, and put on events, parades, etc. for our Rebecca Moss community to enjoy. We even have a Mardi Gras ball that includes our special needs community. A family-friendly Mardi Gras is our true goal. “ As the secretary of MGSW, Moss helps run each event, prepares the agendas, takes the minutes of each meeting and handles all media requests. “I schedule the meetings for the year as well as send out meeting reminders through social media as well as emails,” she continues. “As a member of the executive board, I help to maintain the integrity of MGSW and help in the decision-making for our organization, as well as help to keep things running smoothly. Our executive board works together on many aspects of planning and development.” Moss is the car show chair and puts it on each year on the weekend of 12th Night. “I plan, organize and run it in its entirety, fielding all planning and registration, as well as implementation of the event,” she explains. A lot goes into her position as parade chairman, as there are SEVEN current parades. Moss says she starts very early in the year, meeting with city officials, law enforcement and public works. “We meet several times a year to make sure every aspect of our festival will run safely,” she says. “Safety is our first and foremost concern. Through the next several months, I have individual meetings with various sectors of our city to make sure we are all prepared. I field all media calls for interviews and updates. In the years with possible weather issues, I meet with emergency preparedness teams to plan accordingly.” As MGSW events near, Moss registers all entries for each parade. “Next, I compile a list of compliances that law enforcement requires for each parade. It takes several volunteers to line up the parades and maintain the staging area as well as the line-up area.” After each parade, a full reporting is required, along with after-action meetings. “We make sure that all drivers are sober,” Moss says. “We have a zero tolerance rule due to it being a tourist event. Our safety measures are some of the highest. There are many details that come into play prior to any parade ever being run.” If that isn’t enough, Moss also organizes the public camping area at the Civic Center, creates and issues all permits, completes mapping and maintains the area for the week of festival. There are many safety protocols there as well.

“I also contract, schedule and make sure the Carnival runs each year as well,” she continues. “All things that may arise with MGSW I usually tend to with the help of the executive board. Planning our event is truly a year-round job.” The annual Mardi Gras celebration does not get any monetary help from the City. “Our festival uses the funds from each event that has entry fees, and we receive a grant from the Convention Center and Visitors Bureau,” Moss says. “We also look to our community for monetary or in-kind donations.” Above all, Moss would like everyone to know that every person helping to put the festival together is a volunteer. “There are NO PAID positions,” she emphasizes. “Please have patience and respect for those volunteering their time to help make our festival the best it can be. Also, everyone can come help, volunteer and get involved!”

The Krewe de Charlie Sioux was sanctioned by the state of Louisiana in 1997. That same year, Lake Charles and Sioux City officially became Sister Cities at a twinning ceremony in Lake Charles. Members consist of Sioux City, Iowa and Lake Charles residents. Each city has its own Krewe president and Ball Captain. Sioux City members come to Lake Charles for Mardi Gras and Lake Charles members travel to Sioux City the week of July Fourth and bring Mardi Gras to Siouxland in the form of a gala, parade and Zydeco concert. The purpose of the Krewe is to promote Mardi Gras and share cultural experiences as well as develop tourism in each city. This Mardi Gras season completes the 25th year that Krewe members have traveled back and forth between the two cities, and the 22nd year of presentation of a King, Queen and Court. This year, King Charles XXII, Dick Lindblom and Queen Siouxland XXII, Bernice Zachary, reigned over the Masquerade Ball festivities in Sioux City.

Krewe de Carnivale’ celebrated the 20th anniversary of their founding in grand and glorious style at the Lake Charles Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall on February 1. bl so memorable. Krewe de Carnivale’ has two traditions unique to the area. First is the bead toss, where Krewe members take to the stage several times during the evening to electrify the party crowd by tossing beads and trinkets to chants of, “Throw me something, Mister!” The other tradition is to cap off the evening with the napkin toss, where guests are invited to pitch thousands of paper napkins in the air while the disco classic “Love is in the Air” plays on. Krewe de Carnivale’ was established in 2000 by a group of friends that wanted to celebrate Mardi Gras in a slightly different manner, emphasizing the fun, enjoyable and carefree elements of previously attended celebrations.

La Krewe des Gens Extraordinaire was founded in 1995. A core group of individuals had been talking for weeks about starting a new Krewe. It took dedication and hard work from Edwina Medearis, Shannon Ryan, Cliff Bertrand, Barbara Forsythe, Shelia Winey, Toney Forsythe, Mallany Ryan, and Charles Brown—but they knew that their efforts could make their vision a reality. The main qualification for joining the exceptional Krewe was to simply be a person of extraordinary qualities, regardless of position or title. The inaugural Mardi Gras Ball was held on January 13, 1996 in the Contraband Room at the Lake Charles Civic Center. From the beginning, this Krewe of Extraordinary People has made a commitment to foster and promote this joyous celebration by participating in all Mardi Gras activities in Southwest Louisiana.

Krewe des Voleurs has brought new friends and a new excitement to her life. Half beauty, half fish, Sirenes sing to men, hypnotizing them to swim out to sea, only to be drowned, eaten and sent to their doom. Our Nauti Duchess of Sirene, Lori Lynn Sonnier came out in her very own mermaid costume and collar. Born and raised in Moss Bluff, she attended Sam Houston High School and majored in Party! at McNeese. She now resides in Westlake and is in a committed relationship with Kailyn Hunt. She has been employed with Team Industrial for nine years and enjoys the outdoors, hiking, camping

and her APA and BCA Leagues. She loves good times and the good friends she’s made in the Krewe. 2020 Nauti Duchess of No Wake Zone Linzie Sommer entered the hall throwin’ her wake around. Born in Lake Charles and raised in Creole, she is a graduate of So. Cameron High School and attended Sowela. She has been employed at Lebert & Leblanc ENT for six years. She resides in Iowa with her husband of almost three years and their pets Dixie, Davison, and Dah. A two-year Krewe member, she enjoys the laid-back atmosphere and says everyone feels like family. She says her time on the float is the most fun. She loves listening to red dirt classic country. 2020 Nauti Duke Scuba Steve is Justin Sommer. Born in Detroit and raised in Warren, MI, he attended E. Lutheran High School and graduated from Adrian College with a bachelor’s degree in business. He currently resides in Iowa with his lovely wife Linzie, two dogs, Dixie and Davison, and cat, Dah. He has worked for Union Pacific Railroad for over five years and enjoys the outdoors, especially being on his boat. He says Krewe des Voleurs is awesome, flexible for his crazy schedule and feels like family. With her collar rising from the sea to the music of Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty,” our 2020 Queen of Atlantis is Caline Pittman. Born in New Orleans and raised in Sulphur, she graduated from Sulphur High School and moved to California. She returned to take care of her parents and now resides in Sulphur with her loving King and her sweet furbabies, Sasha Lee, a rottweiller and Buster Brown, a pitbull. She has been employed by Turner Industries for the past five years. She enjoys crafting, golf, scuba diving, and time with her family and friends. The Cruise of Entertainment is in port as we welcome our 2020 King of Nauti Voyages Buddy Ryan, who entered in style to Lakeside’s “Fantastic Voyage.” He was born in Sulphur and raised in Pasadena, Texas where he attended Sam Rayburn High School. He is the father of Ashley, Nate, and Jessica and resides in Sulphur with his lovely Queen and their two furbabies. He is a superintendent at Turner Industries and volunteers with SWLA Whitetails Unlimited Chapter, serving on the executive board. One last hilariously Nauti skit, “Synchro Swimmers” was performed by Jesters T-Cole, Bobby Jo Johnson, Tammy Ryan, Ron Turner, Stacy Fontenot, Kailyn Hunt, Jordan

Banks, Jonathan Abraham, and Stacie and Darek Ardoin. Members and guest joined new Royal Court in a traditional toast signifying the official 2020 reign, and the Nauti Party started with the Second Line Stroll. Special thanks to Upscale Productions who provided lights, sounds, and stage presence; Wilpro, and Roddy Johnson Photography. The “Krewe of Thieves” was founded in 2007 by David LaPointe and Todd “T-Cole “Younger. The principles of the Krewe are good friends, good food, good fun, and a little thievery mixed in. The Krewe has several events each year that incorporate the very principles it was founded on.
