A Note From The Publisher I was born and raised in a relatively small city in Michigan called Mt. Clemens, where I had a wonderful, happy childhood. I grew up with five siblings, and we had that special kind of fun that large families have: all eight of us packed in the station wagon on summer vacations, having all kinds of adventures; the whole family building snow forts in the backyard; screaming our lungs out on amusement park rides; selling fruit and lemonade in front of the house; setting up and decorating our very own “Kid’s Tree” in our basement at Christmas. Those were the days—and as I grew older, I wondered if I’d ever have so much fun again. I didn’t—not for many years. I was an adult, with responsibilities and pressures. Of course, there were good times, but nothing compared to the carefree days of childhood. Then I met my wife, and we eventually moved to Lake Charles—all because of a house we saw on the Internet.

MARCH 7, 2011

I remember people telling us about Mardi Gras here, and we couldn’t wait to experience it. Seven years later, I can’t imagine not celebrating Mardi Gras every year with our wonderful new friends. Throughout the year, Lauren keeps her eyes open for deals on ball gowns, and I look for vests and bow ties! One year, I invited my brother and his wife from Dallas to one of our balls. They had so much fun, we asked them to be on court with us the following year when we were King and Queen of Krewe Déjà Vu du Monde. I’ll never forget the fun they had on the float, throwing beads to the happy crowd. “What a life you have here!” my brother shouted to me on the float. Yes, what a life we have here. Eight years ago, if you were to ask me what time of my life was the most fun, I would have answered, without hesitation, that it was my childhood. But ask me now and I’ll tell you it’s today, right here in Lake

Charles during Mardi Gras season. Give me the balls, the costumes, the crawfish, the music, and of course, all of our friends, most of whom we met through our Krewes. For those of you who are visiting us for the first time, or who are reading this Mardi Gras program and thinking about coming to experience it, all I can say is “Come on down!” My wish for you is that you also experience “A time to remember!” As my wife and I tell each other every day, “These are the good ole’ days!” We love you Lake Charles! Enjoy our second annual Mardi Gras program. A lot of hard work went into making it special! Happy Mardi Gras!

“We are very proud of our local Mardi Gras, which brings people to Southwest Louisiana from all over the country. Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana is a community-wide celebration and a family affair. Over the years, it has grown remarkably into the standout festival it is today — the second largest in the state! My very best wishes to all for a safe and memorable 2011 Mardi Gras in Lake Charles and all of Southwest Louisiana.”

On behalf of the citizens of Sulphur, we welcome you to the 2011 Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras festivities. This is a very exciting event which revelers anticipate each year. The krewes work diligently all year for the events planned including Twelfth Night, balls, and of course, the Krewe of Krewes parade. Local merchants have mastered their famous king cakes and have shipped them to thousands who are fascinated with our heritage. Not just a local event, Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras attracts tourists from other areas who travel here to witness the fun and excitement that we all know. Our wish for each of you is for a safe and enjoyable 2011 Mardi Gras and remember… Laissez les bons temps rouler!

It’s Sunday, and we’re recuperating from our fourth Mardi Gras ball of 2011. Four down, three more to go before Fat Tuesday. For us, life’s a ball during this season. And every event is different because every krewe is different. With almost 50 krewes in the area, there’s something for everyone. There are the more traditional krewes and there are the wild, let-your-hair-down krewes. There are costume balls and formal balls; some that are a combination of the two, and balls where you have to dress like a pirate. Illusions always has its presentation at the Rosa Hart Theater, with its “Illusionists” wearing gargantuan creations that it takes them all year to build. Krewe de Charlie Sioux has members from both Lake Charles and our Sister City, Sioux City, Iowa, and brings its Mardi Gras gala and parade to Iowa every July. I’ve been a few times, and it’s a blast. There are krewes that are strictly male or female only. Some spend a small fortune on elaborate court costumes; others dress in the oldstyle French medieval garb. The court presentations are another story. They can be so long that I’ve almost fallen asleep at some of them (Phil actually did,

WHY THROW BEADS? The tradition of Mardi Gras throws dates back to the 1920s. The Krewe of Rex in New Orleans reportedly began the tradition of throws by tossing out cheap glass bead necklaces. They were a big hit and were soon adopted by all the parading krewes. Rex is also credited with first adopting and throwing out doubloons. As throws gained popularity, krewes got more creative in what they decided to toss. Here in Lake Charles, you’ll see logo-emblazoned plastic cups, Frisbees, stuffed animals, candy, moon pies—you name it! Royalty traditional throws large pearl beads, which the crowd loves. The glass beads thrown in the early days were imported from Czechoslovakia and Japan. Today, they’re manufactured mostly in China (big surprise!).

one time. When it’s past a certain hour, he has to be entertained—otherwise, he’s down for the count.) Others are lively, with skits and high-energy music that really gets the crowd going. Phil and I belong to Krewe Déjà vu Du Monde (wild) and Krewe de la Famille (traditional). As of this writing, we are the reigning king and queen of Famille, but that ended on Feb. 26, when the new royalty was crowned and we had to give up our thrones at the ball. We were also king and queen of Krewe Déjà Vu a few years back. In both cases, we got to pick our theme. Deja’s was Circus Circus (I wonder why) and for a crazy krewe, the theme lent itself for acting up and fun costumes. When we decided to be on court for La Famille, I selected the perfect theme for a more traditional organization: the Splendor of Versailles. Our costumes were breathtaking (they’re on display at the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau as we speak) and the coliseum at the Lake Charles Civic Center was transformed into a French palace for the night. It was an amazing evening. To this day, I still wonder how an Italian girl from East Boston ended up a Mardi Gras queen in Southwest Louisiana.

HISTORY OF THE KING CAKE The history of the King Cake has its roots in pre-Christian religions of Western Europe. Part of the harvest celebrations practiced by the pagans was the sacrifice ritual. It was customary to choose a man to be the “sacred king” of the tribe. The chosen man would be treated like a king for the year, then, he would be sacrificed, and his blood returned to the soil to ensure that the harvest would be successful. The method of choosing who would have the honor of being the sacred king was the purpose of the King’s Cake. A coin or bean would be placed in the cake before it was baked. The men of the tribe would each eat a piece of cake, and whoever got the slice with the coin was the chosen one. Then Christianity came along, overshadowing the religions that came before it. To

make the new religion more palatable, priests incorporated many of the old customs into Christian tradition. Thus, the King’s Cake was converted into a celebration of the Magi—the Three Kings who came to visit the Christ Child. In 12th century France, the cake would be baked on the eve of January 6 to celebrate the visit to the Christ Child by the three Kings. A small token was hidden in the cake as a surprise for the finder. French settlers brought the custom to Louisiana in the 18th century, where it remained associated with the Epiphany until the 19th century. At that time, it became a more elaborate Mardi Gras custom. Here, the first cake of the season is served on Jan. 6, although I think you can get them even earlier now. We all want our King Cake fix! 2011 Special Edition

When Mardi Gras of Imperial Calcasieu was formed back in the 1980s, no one ever dreamed how that vision of uniting the Mardi Gras krewes in the area and providing a parade and other events for the general public would expand to the extravaganza that Mardi Gras SWLA has become. Twenty-five years later, we now have close to 60 krewes coming together to stage the Twelfth Night Celebration, the Royal Gala, and the Krewe of Krewes Parade, under the direction of the Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana. Childrens’ Day, the Gumbo Cookoff, the Zydeco Dance and more, grace the lineup of Mardi Gras events. Thank you Southwest Louisiana for putting the Mambo in Mardi Gras!

Krewe des Bons Amis celebrated its sixth annual Ball on Jan. 22 at the Habibi Temple in Lake Charles. With the theme “Moonlight and Magnolias,” the ballroom was transformed into a scene from the Old South. Many of the formal gowns of the guests were reminiscent of the traditional Southern Belle. After a rousing rendition of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by President Jimmy Bastow, he greeted the members and guests and introPAGE 16

duced the Master of Ceremonies for the night, Justin Morris. Captains Jackie Bastow and Carrie Cubbage were recognized, with the song “Sweet Magnolia Blossom” playing as they made their walk. Carrie Cubbage sounded the whistle, marking the beginning of the Ball. A fond farewell was bid to King Henry V, Dennis Lavergne and Queen Anne V, Judy Lavergne as they made their final walk as King

and Queen. It was rumored that Queen Anne V would not go peacefully; however, she maintained her grace and dignity. The Royal Presentation began with the introduction of King Henry VI and Queen Anne VI. With a medley of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Moondance” playing in the background, Charles and Leslie Cubbage were announced as the 2011 Royal Couple. Wearing a traditional antebellum gown, the Queen was beautiful in luminous green fabric with rhinestone accents. The fabric changed colors in the spotlights from green to a luscious shade of purple. The King’s tuxedo was trimmed in the same fabric. The King and Queen are residents of Sulphur and are newly certified foster parents. Charles is employed by Vector Electric and Controls as a foreman at PPG. He is also the music director for the Krewe, assisting the Captain each year. Leslie is employed by SouthernCare Hospice as community relations director and is also a design consultant for Willow House.

Charles enjoys cooking, golfing and fishing in his spare time, while Leslie enjoys scrapbooking and photography. The King and Queen are both founding members of Krewe des Bons Amis. While the crowd was waiting for the Presentation to continue, Forrest Gump appeared to the song “Running on Empty” by Jackson Browne and quotes from Forrest’s life could be heard in the background. Representing the Duke and Duchess of Graceland were Matt and Leslie Gillespie. Elvis in his splendor graced our presence and passed out scarves to his screaming fans. But there was one fan, the Duchess, who was crazier than the rest and was desperately attempting to gain Elvis’ attention. With her signature poodle skirt and scarf at her neck, she pranced around him with a large sign stating, “I Love Elvis.” After ignoring her for what seemed like an eternity, Elvis finally gave in and they walked off arm in arm. Matt and Leslie are residents of Moss Bluff and have two daughters, Ayasha and Kira. Both are graduates of McNeese State University and have been members of Krewe des Bons Amis for four years. Matt is employed at the Isle of Capri as sen2011 Special Edition

ior staff accountant and enjoys hunting, fishing and golf. Leslie is the executive assistant to the CEO at Farmer’s Rice Mill. She has been the social chairperson for the Krewe for the past two years, and enjoys scrapbooking and cooking. The Bons Amis Players entertained the members and guests with “Harper Valley PTA” as the PTA accused Mrs. Johnson (Kysha Hebert) of wearing her skirts “way too high,” among other things. Of course, we all know the outcome when she addressed the meeting of the Harper Valley PTA! Others in the skit included Carrie Cubbage, Christine Stevens, Dennis Lavergne, Craig Arabie and Jimmy Bastow. Representing the Duke and Duchess of Moonlight were Anna and Michael Allen. Duke walked through the dark woods while the Duchess pranced trying to get Mr. Werewolf ’s attention. Eventually, she let him catch her and they waltzed around the stage. The very appropriate music included “Werewolves of London” and “Dancing in the Moonlight,” complete with a moon over their heads. The Duke and Duchess are residents of Lake Charles. They are both graduates of McNeese State University and have been members of the Krewe des Bons Amis for three years. Michael is senior geologist for Fugro Consultants and Anna is a fifth grade teacher at Henry Heights Elementary School in Lake Charles. They enjoy traveling and spending time with their goddaughter, Kaitlyn. The Bons Amis Players appeared again at the Watermelon Festival,

with the Sheriff (Christine Stevens) presiding. A line dance included Kysha Hebert, Dot Whatley, Judy Lavergne, Suzanne May, Pat Burns and Jolene John. Representing the Duke and Duchess of Magnolias were Bryan and Candace Hollingsworth. Magnolias and fleur de lis covered their costumes. Being true to their home state flower, they paid homage to the sports and tailgate traditions. With a medley of “Louisiana Saturday Night,” “Tiger Tailgate Party” and “Louisiana Hot Stuff,” the Duke and Duchess paid respects to The Saints and LSU, as well as hunting and tailgating. The couple ended their tribute with a little Louisiana two-step. Candace and Bryan are residents of Moss Bluff. Bryan is a graduate of Lamar State University, and is a registered nurse and the clinical man-

ager of Business Health Partners in Sulphur. Candace is a graduate of McNeese State University and is employed at South Beauregard High School in Longville. They are the parents of two children, Jackson and Lilly. Bryan enjoys hunting, fishing, golf and all things sports-related. Candace loves spending time with friends and traveling. They have been members of Krewe des Bons Amis for two years. The Court was reintroduced to the guests with the song “It’s Gonna Be A Good Night” playing in the background. After the Court was introduced, the entire Krewe and their guests were asked to join them. It was a sign to all attending from the Krewe that, indeed, it was going to be a good night! The Royal Toast was next on the program, followed by the Mardi Gras Second Line dance. Bayou Katz provided music, with sound and lighting provided by Southern DJ Productions. A special thanks go to the Krewe board members: President Jimmy Bastow, Vice President Craig Arabie, Secretary Anna Allen, Treasurer Jackie Bastow, and Sgt. at Arms Roger Felter. Also, a big “Thank you” to Amy Gerard, Ball chairperson; Jody Fawvor, Ball decorating chairperson; Dennis Lavergne, float chairman; and Leslie Gillespie, social chairperson.

The first routine performed by Jesters Laura Matthews and Scotty Schadler was done to the theme from Ghostbusters with the help of Robert and Paulette Dartez . The first Court couple, Duke Sam Brumett and Duchess Dana Brumett, came out in collars depicting scenes from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Duke Sam and Duchess Dana are residents of Westlake, and have been married for ten years and have two children, Abby and Tex. They have been Krewe members for five years and are both currently serving on the board of directors. Duke Sam is employed by Trouth Plumbing and Duchess Dana is a stayat-home mom. Next, the Jesters performed skits to the commercials for the new Atari game “Pong” and the arcade game “Pac Man,” with the help of CJ and Sue Langley and Paulette and Robert Dartez. This geared everyone up for the Royal Event: the presentation of King Maurice XXIV, Jerry Goodeaux and Queen Monique XXIV, Cathy Goodeaux. His Royal Highness wore a collar that mirrored an Atari Joy Stick and the 3-D depiction of the game “Frogger.” The back of

his collar was embellished with black ostrich feathers. Her Royal Highness wore a collar that depicted the arcade game “Pac Man.” The back of her collar was covered with white ostrich feathers and white black-tipped ostrich plumes. The Royal Couple has been married for 30 years and currently resides in Ragley. They have two children, Jeri Shortridge and Kimberly Culbertson, and seven grandchildren. They have been members of the Krewe for two years, with Queen Kathy currently serving on the board of directors. Krewe de Embrasser Le Bon Vie was established in 2003 and participated in their first Krewe of Krewes parade in 2004. Le Bon Vie, which has 40 members, is one of several Krewes that call DeRidder home. Mardi Gras in DeRidder has become a community endeavor with social groups and Krewes sponsoring or supporting each event. The City of DeRidder participates by nominating the King and Queen and several Dukes and Duchesses. Anyone can be nominated; the applicant then completes a form that includes their background and community service. The DeRidder Women’s League chooses the Court from the applicants.

The Court is introduced to the public on Twelfth Night, which is sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi. All proceeds from sponsors and ticket sales are donated to muscular dystrophy. The present Queen and all past Queens get together at a luncheon and raise funds amongst themselves to be donated to the Beauregard Association for Retarded Citizens. The Mardi Gras Ball is hosted by the DeRidder Women’s League, and all proceeds are also donated to BARC. Krewe de Embrasser Le Bon Vie would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to their sponsor, whose generosity allowed the Krewe to make their first appearance in the Mardi Gras edition of The Jambalaya News.

The Krewe of Illusions held its 22nd Annual Mardi Gras Extravaganza “Twisted Tales: Fairies and All” at 7:30 p.m. on March 5 in the Rosa Hart Theater. This year, Illusions brought to the stage the world of Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. Their twisted versions of the tales were spun by Mother Goose and some outspoken witches from many a twisted imagination. As the journey began, a beautiful backdrop of a hilltop castle blazoned with the words “Once upon a time...” opened to reveal Ricky Huggins, King Illusions XXI, representing “Prince Phillip” from Sleeping Beauty, and Kristin Menard, Queen Illusions XXI, representing “Princess Aurora” from Sleeping Beauty.

The King and Queen wore regal costumes of royal purple velvet and satin, all glittering with silver sequins and jeweled appliqués. The royal back pieces represented the castles of their kingdoms. Her castle was protected by climbing roses of large purple blooms and green thorny vines. His castle was under attack by a large green dragon, protecting the interests of Sleeping Beauty living inside. The back pieces were completed with

white and purple ostrich and long peacock feathers, and towered over 13 feet. King Ricky and Queen Kristin are both from Lake Charles. The Major Costumes of the Royal Court were Roxanne Landry as “Snow White,” the famous steamy vixen with her seven sexy dwarfettes and Clifford Bailey as “Jock and the Beanstalk,” the famous traveler who fell in love with money and riches at the expense of the beastly giant.

Barry Whitten was “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves,” the advocate of the poor who robbed from the rich and gave to the needy— and himself! Ball Captain Kevin Hodge concluded the show as the trickster “Puss and Boots,” with his furry feline gangsters. The production was supported by all of the members who work as performers, costume-makers, stagehands and technical masters. At the show’s conclusion, the Krewe and their guests moved to the exhibition hall where everyone danced to the rocking sounds of “Toni O and Blue Haze” of Baton Rouge.

On March 5, a rowdy group of pirates made their way to their meeting place, the VFW Post 2130, to do what pirates do…wreak havoc and have a good time at the Inaugural Ball of the Krewe des Pirates. The room was befitting of a Pirate gathering place, complete with a fine ship, wrecked since the last hurricane, and various stoic pirate characters standing guard on the festivities. The Pirates had been waiting months for this Ball and they were not disappointed. Board member and Master of Ceremonies Joe Vezina took command of the Pirate Ball. He presented a brief history of the Krewe and introduced the board members as follows: President, Troy Kiser; President-Elect, Joe Vezina; Secretary, Jimmy Bastow;

Treasurer, Jackie Bastow; Ball Chairperson, Vicki Vezina; and advisory members Mark Lavergne, Eddie Langley, Angela Kiser, Debbie Lavergne and Lori Chehotsky. President and 2011 Captain Troy Kiser was introduced to the crowd. Troy lives in Moss Bluff with his wife Angela and their boys, Michael and Jacob. He is a graduate of Sam Houston High School and Northwestern State University. Captain Troy is employed by Johnson Supply as regional marketing director. Now, it was time to meet our Pirate Royalty! The Duke and Duchess of Contraband were represented by Shawn and Jessica Augustine Duhon. From their homeport of the Grand Lake, they brought a Treasure Chest dripping with gold and silver to be presented to the King and Queen.

The Duke of Contraband’s Pirate garb included a black shirt with gold braid and button embellishment paired with black side-lace pants with gold sash. The duke, whose hair was grown long for the occasion, wore a tri-corn hat with black and white feathers. The Duchess of Contraband wore a silver and gold jacket dress with black velvet collar and cuffs. Over the dress was a black and gold cummerbund with white lace trim. The feather-embellished pirate hat was trimmed in the same silver and gold fabric. Shawn and Jessica are from Grand Lake and were married on the high seas of Jamaica in 2006. They have two children, Cameron and Jonathon Duhon, and stake claim to land in Grand Lake. Shawn is a graduate of Barbe High School and is an employee of PPG Industries. He and Jessica enjoy
