A Note From The Publisher It was a typical cold and snowy January morning in Taunton, Massachusetts. I made myself a hot cup of coffee and Lauren her tea. We sat by the window and looked out across the yard covered with white twinkling snow and the frozen icicles hanging from the bushes. “What would you like to do for your birthday?” Lauren asked. “Let’s get dressed up and go dancing somewhere!” I exclaimed. “I’ve always wanted to do that.” “Where would we go?” commented Lauren. “If you’re talking about that place down the street, they just had a shooting there last week.” My dream of a wonderful evening dancing the night away wasn’t going to happen. Then, we found Lake Charles. Our love affair with Mardi Gras started just a few months after we moved here. A friend of ours, Dru Sonnier, invited us to Twelfth Night at the Lake Charles Civic Center. And then the Mardi Gras royalty came out. I remember saying “WOW!” every

time a new krewe emerged from behind the curtain. I had lots of questions: “What do they get if they’re King and Queen?” “Why do people want to be King and Queen?” “What do Dukes and Duchesses do?” Dru laughed and tried to explain. But it was like being in another world. “You’ll understand more after you go to a ball,” she said. “It sure is a lot of fun!” Soon after, Bryan and Joyce Alexander invited us to our first ball. We were so excited! I thought that maybe now we would understand what Mardi Gras was really all about. Someone told me to buy a tuxedo right off the bat, so I did. And Lauren had fun trying on different gowns. We were starting to get into it. I’m not sure we slept much the night before, talking about what we thought it would be like. So off we went to Krewe du Bon Coeur’s 2004 ball at Habibi Temple. What we saw when we walked in was awesome! The food, gifts, music and show were all fabulous!

“This is what I was talking about last year!” I yelled over to Lauren. “Remember when I said I wanted to get dressed up to go somewhere and dance? Remember?” We spent the night dancing, eating and drinking, and meeting people. We learned how to do the Second Line, and got a kick out of all the umbrellas. But the night seemed to end as quickly as it began, and we didn’t want to go home. It was certainly an experience to remember. “I wonder if we’ll ever get a chance to go to another ball again, sweetheart,” I said to Lauren in the car. “If not, we’ll always remember this night.” “Oh, we will,” Lauren replied. “I get the feeling we will.” Six years later, we are completely immersed in Mardi Gras. We go to an average of six balls a season. We have been Duke and Duchess of Krewe Deja Vu du Monde, Duke and Duchess of Krewe de Charlie Sioux, Duke and Duchess of Krewe de la Famille, King and Queen of Krewe Deja Vu du Monde, and this year, we

are King Famille XXXI and Queen Famile XXXI! In addition, I am Captain of Krewe Deja Vu du Monde and Lauren is on the board of directors. She also helps write the script for Krewe de la Famille’s presentation and program every year. It seems as if I’m always thanking you folks down here every time I write my publisher’s note, but I can’t help it. Thank you all so much for opening your community and your hearts and for sharing your Mardi Gras celebrations with us. Now, we have something for you. We are so proud to present “The Magic of Mardi Gras,” a special edition published by The Jambalaya News, highlighting the 2010 krewe royalty. Look inside and feel the magic! Six years ago on a cold and snowy day in Massachusetts, Lauren and I sat at a frosted window. And this is what I dreamed of.

Krewe Des Amis celebrated its 30th Year of Friendship on Sat., Jan. 30 in the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum. The venue was transformed that one night for the krewe members and guests to celebrate the years and honor its captain, Kenneth Istre. The krewe was founded in 1980 when a small group of friends decided to celebrate their friendship and invite others to share the Mardi Gras season with them. From this gathering, Krewe des Amis was born. Kenneth Istre was the founding captain who, along with his late wife Becky Primeaux Istre as co-captain, has served the krewe since its inception. The krewe honored Kenneth at his last ball as their captain. He was escorted by his three daughters, Kristen Orndorff, Kourtney Haftmann and Kara Istre. Board member Sheryl Abshire, one of the founders, spoke of the history and the memories over the last 30 years. The krewe then presented their captain with an original oil painting by local artist Sue Zimmerman.

Krewe des Bons Amis presented its fifth annual Mardi Gras Ball on Feb. 6, 2010 at the Habibi Temple in Lake Charles. With a theme of “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” the ballroom was transformed into a tropical paradise. Huge umbrellas, breathtaking island scenes and beautiful sunsets filled the room. Krewe des Bons Amis alternates between costume and formal balls, and this year was the costume ball. Hawaiian shirts, sarongs and flip-flops could be seen everywhere. Krewe President Jimmy Bastow welcomed the guests and introduced the board of directors. Captain Jackie Bastow and Co-Captain Carrie Cubbage informed the crowd that the Tiki Bar was open and blew the whistle marking the beginning of the ball. After a little goodhearted banter with the crowd, the microphone was turned over to Master of Ceremonies Justin Morris. A fond farewell was bid to King Henry IV, David Barber and Queen Anne IV, Amy Gerard as they made their final walk. The 2010 Royal Presentation began with the introduction of the King and Queen. To a medley of “Caribbean Queen” and “Conga,” King Henry V, Dennis Lavergne and Queen Anne V, Judy Lavergne made a stunning entrance. Queen Anne’s dress was tropical pink in color and accented with rhinestones. The asymmetrical fringed hem incorporated lush shades of blue, green and yellow. King Henry’s white linen suit was perfect for a hot evening, complete with sea-blue shirt and chartreuse tie.

2010 Krewe des Bons Amis Royal Court The King and Queen are residents of Westlake. They own J. H. Auto in Westlake, and Judy is employed by Stockwell, Sievert, Viccellio, Clements and Shaddock Law Firm as a legal assistant. The King and Queen have three children, Ashley Duhon, Brittney Parker and Kelly Shaw, and four grandchildren. They are active in the American Legion Post 407 and the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, and have been members of Krewe des Bons Amis for five years. They both enjoy boating, fishing and riding their motorcycles. The King currently holds the position of Sgt. at Arms with the krewe. To entertain the King and Queen, Alan Jackson (Craig Arabie) and Jimmy Buffett (Michael Allen) performed the theme song of the ball, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” with the help of the Bons Amis Actors as the adoring crowd. The Duke and Duchess of the Cajun Riviera next took the stage. Who knew when the Duke was joined by some of his buddies at the beach that the “girl watching” would get him in so much trouble? But of course it did, and before you know it, the Duchess is dragging him away from the action. But that was not all - - two women were left fighting over him! The Duke and Duchess walked off, only to show up next on Holly Beach, complete with a “pick-up truck” and all the fun things that happen on the Cajun Riviera! Duke and Duchess of the Cajun Riviera were Brad and Diana Hebert. Residents of Moss Bluff, Diana is employed by Calcasieu Rentals as office manager and bookkeeper, and Duke Brad is superintendent at M & C Oilfield Services. They are the parents of three children, Hope Trahan, Jennifer Faust and Marcus LeDoux, and have four grandchildren. Diana is currently vice president of Krewe des Bons Amis, and Brad is float chairman. It’s Five O’Clock at the Bons Amis Lounge and the “Single Ladies” are out for a night on the town. With a bottle of tequila in tow, the girls come to the aid of one of their own when “Tequila Makes her Clothes Fall Off.” Thanks to her good friends, it all ends well.

Entering the stage next was The Duke and Duchess of the Caribbean. As the crowd sipped on pina coladas and other umbrella drinks with visions of a hot Havana night, the steamy entertainment began. The Duke expressed himself on an authentic conga drum while working the crowd to the tune “Frenchman of the Caribbean.” The Duchess made her entrance onto the stage of the Bons Amis Lounge and heated up the room to the sounds of “Hot Hot Hot.” Together, they created Island Magic as they performed the mambo. Duke of the Caribbean was Jimmy Bastow and Duchess of the Caribbean was Irma Bordelon. Duchess Irma is a registered nurse and an employee of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. She and her husband Kenneth are the parents of two sons, Mark and Darren Bordelon, and have four grandchildren. Irma has been a member of the krewe for five years. Jimmy is a founding member of Krewe des Bons Amis and is currently serving as krewe president. The Duke is also a member of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, Mardi Gras of SWLA and the Calcasieu Boat Club. It’s Five O’Clock in the Islands when The Bons Amis Actors performed the Conga Line, picking up guests along the way. The Duke and Duchess of Paradise are on vacation and living the good life. The Duke fulfilled his lifelong dream to sing on stage while his Duchess worked the crowd on his behalf. Beach balls were everywhere, compliments of the Duchess. Once his big moment was over, they asked themselves “What would Jimmy Buffett do??” The answer was: Take a dream vacation to sunny destinations; to put their toes in the water and you-know-what in the sand and end their trip on the beach drinking pina coladas and watching the sunset. Duke and Duchess of Paradise were Charles and Leslie Cubbage. Leslie is employed by

SouthernCare Hospice as Community Relations Director. She is a founding member of the krewe and is currently Bons Amis’ Webmaster and historian. Charles is employed by Vector Electric and Controls as a foreman at PPG, and is also a founding member of the krewe. The 2010 Ball Decoration Chairperson was Jody Fawvor and Ball Chairperson was Amy Gerard. Lighting was provided by Donald Greenwood and Southern DJ Productions. Thanks to American Legion Post 407 and Isle of Capri for their generous support. The Bons Amis Actors were Anna Allen, Jackie Bastow, Carrie Cubbage, Tamara LaRocca, Christine Stevens and Angie Wilson. Attendees were entertained by the band Bayou Katz. 2010 King Chaos IV & Queen Gaea IV Rod and Mikki Myers

Krewe of Chaos held its fifth annual Mardi Gras ball Jan. 30, 2010 in the Isle of Capri Flamingo Ballroom. This year’s theme revolved around the totally rad times of the 1980s. Upon entering the ballroom, Chaos krewe members and their guests walked through a 10-foot guitar arch, and were greeted with the CTV (Chaos Television) logo and graffiti painted on a brick wall. Flames, rock bands and amplifiers screamed out to guests that the ‘80s are still a good time with Chaos members. Huge spiraling balloon bouquets of lime green and hot pink balloons covered the tables,

along with fiber optic accent lights. Emcee Timmy Wilson, dressed in ‘80s tuxedo attire, greeted Chaos members and guests. He fondly reminded them of the days of Aqua Net, ET phoning home and tightrolled jeans. The ‘80s were a time when attitudes were big and hair was bigger. Krewe of Chaos’ 2010 officers were introduced starting with Captain Todd Bruney, followed by the Co-captains: Krewe Events, Vanessa Clavier; Finance, Scott Jackson; and Krewe Relations, Ashley White. The 2009 King Chaos III, Dean Manning, and Queen Gaea III, Wynn Manning, were

summoned to bid farewell to their Chaos subjects to the tune of “Beat It” by Michael Jackson. The adventure continued as the first 2010 Duke and Duchess were spotlighted on the presentation floor. With the Star Wars theme song as their entry, this couple from a galaxy far, far away has been one with the force for 17 years. Byron and Chelle Martin were introduced as Duke Millennium Falcon and Duchess Tattoine. Duke Byron is a full-trained Jedi knight who is employed by PPG. Chelle is a freelance artist and a window dresser at Memorial Hospital Gift Shop who does seasonal work at Spirit Halloween and

Emily’s Children’s Store. The Sulphur residents are the parents of Blake and Bryce. The second couple hit the floor with “Don’t You Love Me,” a hit song that was grinded into our minds with the ‘80s hit movie, Dirty Dancing. This Duke will never put his baby in the corner. Chad and Earline Stapleton of Oakdale were presented as Duke Johnny Castle and Duchess Baby. They’ve been having the time of their lives for the 21 years they have been together. Chad is employed by Basell and Earline is a homemaker. They are the parents of Carlie. To the tune of “Don’t Stop the Rock,” the next Duke and Duchess brought us the dance explosion of the ‘80s – Breakin’. Krewe Déjà vu Du Monde held its 2010 Mardi Gras ball on Jan. 16 in the Buccaneer room at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The theme for this year’s ball was “Twisted Fairy Tales,” echoing tales of fairies and other beings limited only to your imagination! Master of Ceremonies for the evening was H. Gayle Marshall. Presented for the abdicating reign was the 2009 Royal Monarchs King Tim Castle and Queen Jennifer Castle. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Joe Broussard, our costume maker John Chavanne’s life partner, who passed away recently, and who had always been an integral part of our Krewe. Next, the board of directors was introduced: Founding members Kay and Gary Sonnier and Jennifer Gill were presented, followed by the current board members: Dr. Tom Price, Eileen Grantham, Frances Ferguson, Lauren de Albuquerque, Tim Castle, Read Ellender, and Krewe reps Barbara Downer, Julie Babineaux, Vicky Hale, and Lenis Landry. The 2010 festivities began with the blowing of the whistle by Captain Phil de Albuquerque. The Krewe Crest was promenaded by mascot Julie Babineaux, who wowed the audience dressed as the angelic Tinker Bell, sprinkling fairy dust in her path. The Royal Presentation began with Dr. Tom Price introducing the 2010 King and Queen of Twisted Fairy Tales, Royal Monarchs George (Tip) Cline and Gayle Cline. His Majesty was garbed in regal robes of purple, black, white and silver with purple and black ostrich feathers on his collar. Mrs. Genevieve “Bea” Alice Pintado Chavanne turned 100 on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. She celebrated this momentous event by acting as Grand Marshal of the Red Hat Parade in Lake Charles. She is the grandmother of local costume designer John Chavanne, who is known for making Mardi Gras krewe royalty look fabulous throughout the celebrations. Chavanne was born in Lake Charles to Edwin and Ida LeBlanc Pintado on Feb. 16, 1910. She’s the youngest of three daughters, and credits her sisters with giving her the nickname of “Bea.” She said her sisters would walk up to her cradle and say “Look at the bea bea,” and it just stuck with her throughout her life. She grew up on Iris Street and remembers a very different Lake Charles. She was two months old when a fire devastated the city; her father worked on the streetcars and witnessed the fire, which destroyed more than 109 buildings. Chavanne said she doesn’t remember the fire, but remembers her kinfolk talking about it years later. She and her late husband, John T. Chavanne, were married for 57 years. She has one son, Raymond, and five grandchildren, John, Will, Doug, Robbie, and Catherine. She has eight great-grandchildren,

Brandon, Alex, Austin, Allison, Adam, Aaron, Anna, and Christopher. She is also expecting her first great-great grandson in May. At 100, she said she’s enjoying her life and also her independence. Chavanne still drives and enjoys playing card games, especially Skip-Bo with her daughter-in-law, Billie Mary. She also enjoys scratching her lottery tickets and cooking. Chavanne credits her long life to happiness and the Little Debbie Donut Stick she has every morning. “I have such a great family. They keep me happy and are always around to make me laugh. I’m not sure if not smoking or eating right has helped me, but I love my Little Debbie Donut Sticks.” Chavanne has been living in her house for over 70 years, and just got rid of her rotary dial phone. She still likes to keep in contact with friends and family the “old-fashioned” way with a good handwritten letter sent in the mail. “I don’t like living by myself, but I know I don’t want to live with anyone else,” Chavanne joked when asked if she’s enjoying her single life. She has been a member of Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish her entire life, and is currently serving as the president of the Calcasieu Council on Aging. She said she enjoys a highball every Sunday and thinks kids spend too much time on computers. “They just sit in front of that screen all day. I don’t really understand it.”

She’s been to every state but Alaska and bragged about her first ride on a Ferris wheel at the age of 95. Billie laughed about the time Bea jumped on the trampoline with the great-grand kids, saying that she must have been going through a dare-devil phase after her Ferris wheel ride. Chavanne’s grandson John said he sees his grandmother batting her eyes at the grocery store clerk every once in a while. “She knows how to have fun. She’s just great and I’m very proud to know she’s my grandmother,” he said. Chavanne’s first Mardi Gras Ball was with John during his tenure with the Krewe of Illusions, and she’s been going ever since. She said she doesn’t remember Mardi Gras in Lake Charles until the 70s. “I wasn’t very involved until then, but I enjoy every minute of it.” She said she was honored to be chosen as the Grand Marshal of the Red Hat Parade, and enjoys the limelight. Mrs. Bea is also the 2010 Queen of the Krewe of the Golden Age, which is the Council on Aging’s Mardi Gras krewe. Mardi Gras SWLA Parade Chairman Rebecca Moss said she was a natural choice for Parade Marshal because of her birthday. “She’s just such a sweet person, we couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Moss said. Chavanne wants to thank everyone for giving her such a happy birthday, and wishes everyone a Happy Mardi Gras. “I don’t know why I’ve lived this long, but I’m glad I did,” she said. Sponsored By

The Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors' Bureau conducts programs each Mardi Gras to draw visitors from other regions and states. The traditional Cajun Mardi Gras dates farther back than the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Hundreds of years ago in France, the poor farmers did not have much to eat in the winter. When all the food was gone, the aristocrats would allow them to beg from house to house. As years passed, the begging day turned into a holiday. During this time of celebration, the farmers would mock the kings, queens, bishops and teachers by dressing like them, but in rags and tattered clothing. When the French Acadians, or Cajuns, settled in Louisiana, more than 200 years ago, they brought this old custom with them. Krewe du le Originales et les Enfants “The Krewe of the Originals and their Kids was formed in 1998 to preserve these old-time Mardi Gras traditions. J.C. Spell and Abbie Gaspard were the krewe founders. There is no ball or court for this krewe, but they have several events throughout the year such as a Mardi Gras run in the country, krewe fun day and a family day of food and fun. They also perform at several of the other krewe balls in the area as well as local schools The krewe board includes Captain Benton Scott, Co-Captain Wade Clark, President Steve Corbello, Vice President Benet Scott and Girl Friday, Rebecca Moss. Someone dresses up like a chicken every year. This person is known as Queen Cluck, whose identity is always a closely guarded secret.
