THE RANGE ROVER –
Behold the Range Rover, a driving experience that soars above the ordinary – a luxury sport utility with both a spirit of adventure and an ambience of restrained opulence. Over nearly four decades – and over virtually every kind of driving surface on earth – the Range Rover has established a worldwide reputation as the best of its breed. As always, the newest Range Rover embodies those qualities that have produced its enviable owner loyalty: Spirited performance, peerless luxury and unexcelled capability. To refine something as sophisticated as the Range Rover is no easy task, but subtle changes in interior appointments, improved instrument graphics and careful attention to surfaces and colors make the new Range Rover a worthy successor to previous models, a proud lineage that underscores the assertion that nothing else is a Range Rover. One thing we did not change – and will not change – is the Range Rover’s unique blend of visual appeal, all-terrain capability and restrained luxury.

When you open the door of a Range Rover and gaze for the first time at the luxurious well-appointed passenger compartment, you are first greeted by the aromas of fine Blenheim leather, polished wood and plush carpeting. It is the scent of automotive excellence, a sensory realization that no task has been left undone, no detail unattended. Look around the space and you are struck by its aura of order and discipline. Take your place in the leather-faced, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and place your hands on the leather of the steering wheel. In winter, both the steering wheel and the front and rear seats can be heated. The wheel and the armrests are adjustable to your preferred driving position. Within easy reach are ergonomically designed controls. One touch of any control knob or button communicates a silent tactile message that it and the system it controls have been engineered with the greatest care. Look out across the leather-topped instrument panel through the broad expanse of glass at the road ahead. You will note that the windshield affords uncommonly good visibility – as do the generous side and rear windows. In the rear, passengers are just as comfortable. And the seating can be folded to accommodate such things as skis or an artist easel. The rear armrest reveals a new design with dual cupholders, and covered storage for your cell phone or other accoutrements. If you opt for the available Rear Seat Entertainment System, the armrest also offers storage for the system’s remote control handset.

INTERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP
Run your hands across the door panels and center console. The generous wood accents, in your choice of American Cherry or Burled Walnut, on the center console, fascia and doors exude a gleaming warmth. The fine carpeting provides a pleasant resting place for your feet, and the Noble finish on brushed metallic surfaces and controls is especially pleasing to the eye. New climate-control front-windshield and sidewindow glass incorporates infrared-reflective film within the glass to help reduce interior solar load and thus improve air conditioning efficiency. The near-silent automatic climate control system, which has three separate zones, does not intrude. At rest or under way, the interior is aurally insulated from the outside world. It feels quiet and secure – as it should, for nothing has been left to chance. It is tempting to claim that Range Rover has created a perfect driver and passenger environment. But it is more accurate to say that it has created an atmosphere of luxury.

When the first Range Rover appeared in 1970, the best navigation system consisted of a map and a compass. Today, satellites orbiting above the earth transmit positioning information to your Range Rover. As with the other electronic equipment in your Range Rover, the navigation system is uniquely suited to Range Rover duty. The Range Rover’s GPS navigation system uses a single DVD instead of multiple discs to store its comprehensive database. Quite apart from the expected location-finding capability, the system can direct you to restaurants, hotels, airports and other destinations, providing spoken and visual turn-byturn directions. Should you run low on fuel, the system can direct you to the nearest service station. In off-road situations where no mapping exists, the system can create electronic guideposts that will let you retrace your route. And the system can replace lost satellite GPS signals with dead-reckoning procedures and map matching. Information also reaches you from the ground, through the 4x4 Driver Information Center. Using multiple sensors tied to graphic readouts, the Center gives a complete picture of the vehicle’s real-time progress. The screen displays a clear representation of the position of each wheel – from the rear and from above – enabling the driver to see as well as feel the vehicle’s relationship to the terrain. This feature is of inestimable value when the terrain is far too harsh for most vehicles – and is one more way that the Range Rover takes the world in stride.
Among the features of the 4x4 Driver Information Center is the ability to touch the Terrain Response™ icon for details about that specific Terrain Response mode.
The standard GPS navigation system is highly intuitive in operation, and includes both on-road and off-road functions.

Ours is a 305-horsepower V8 engine.
At the heart of the Range Rover HSE, a modern, finely tuned V8 engine produces 305 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. This sophisticated 4.4-liter engine is comprised of aluminum-alloy block and cylinder heads, which have dual, chain-driven overhead camshafts. The engine uses a sequential multi-port fuel injection system for the precise delivery of fuel to the combustion chambers. Variable Camshaft Phasing (VCP) automatically ensures that the engine operates with the best possible combination of power and efficiency. It is in all respects a 21st-century power unit well-suited to the Range Rover’s on- and off-road promise. The engine is coupled to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission built by ZF, the preeminent European transmission manufacturer. This combination of responsive V8 and fluid power delivery virtually defines the word “seamless.” The transmission offers three operational modes: Normal, Sport and CommandShift manual operation. The Sport setting delivers more performance-oriented shifts than Normal, while CommandShift transfers complete control of gear selection to the driver. Each mode delivers its own interpretation of Range Rover’s admirable smoothness. TM
The transmission also incorporates a two-speed electronic transfer gearbox that can be shifted even while the vehicle is moving at slow speeds. Adding to the sense of security provided by the Range Rover’s permanent four-wheel-drive system are four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) and an infinitely variable locking center differential. From the powerful V8 to the four wheels planted firmly on whatever surface you may encounter, the drivetrain of the Range Rover puts the finest automotive technology in Range Rover history at your service.

T H E S U P E R C H A R G E D:
No matter how complete and how competent a product such as the Range Rover HSE is, there will always be drivers who demand more. For these individuals, there is the swift Supercharged version of the world’s most respected all-purpose vehicle. It incorporates all the virtues of the HSE as well as carefully designed and engineered components that heighten the total Range Rover performance experience. The Range Rover Supercharged earns its performance credentials in a manner that can best be described as forceful. A belt-driven supercharger pressurizes the atmosphere entering the engine, which extracts more power and torque. In fact, horsepower is increased by almost a third, from 305 to 400. Meanwhile the engine’s torque – the power you actually feel – soars from 325 to 420 pound-feet. These power increases occur despite a remarkable circumstance: The cylinders in the Range Rover Supercharged engine are actually smaller than their
15

counterparts in the standard HSE V8. The added horsepower and torque not only create a quicker Range Rover but also contribute materially to the delivery of superlative driving satisfaction. The transmission’s Positive Torque function, when the six-speed transmission is in CommandShift mode, will electronically match the engine speed and road speed when the driver selects a lower gear. The result is a smoother and more immediate gear change. For improved traction, an electronically controlled, infinitely variable locking rear differential is also standard. More distinctive aspects of the Supercharged become apparent as you approach the vehicle for the first time. In front, you’ll notice a bright, diamond-mesh chrome grille with a unique black Land Rover badge. At the rear, you will see clear taillight lenses and chrome-tipped exhaust outlets. Vertical power vents in the front fenders also carry bright diamond-mesh grillework. Filling out the wheel wells are 255/50R20 speed-rated tires and 20-inch alloy wheels. Larger front disc brakes are fitted with Brembo® four-piston calipers. Thus, the Supercharged plants a larger footprint on the pavement and can be reined in from cruising speeds with confidence. Inside the Range Rover Supercharged, more surprises await. The Luxury Interior Package, optional on the HSE, is standard. The Grand Black Lacquer Wood accents, available only on the Supercharged, exude the finish of a concert grand piano. New stainless-steel door-sill plates are accompanied by stainless-steel-clad accelerator and brake pedals. Indeed, the Supercharged is so complete that the DVD Rear Seat Entertainment System is the sole component offered as an option. Distinctive, discrete, designed for the discriminating – the Range Rover Supercharged.

and handling improvements are exclusive in nature.
Two of the Range Rover systems are so impressive that they bear further examination. These are the fourcorner Electronic Air Suspension (EAS) and patented Terrain Response. Although air suspension systems are not new in the automotive world, the Range Rover system is so sophisticated and comprehensive in its capabilities, it may be unique. The EAS uses microprocessor-activated and controlled air springs at each wheel, continuously adjusting the suspension to accommodate varying loads and changing road conditions. The system can increase or reduce ground clearance and can even “reach” for better traction when maneuvering over highly uneven off-road conditions. Once parked, you can engaged the Access mode, which will lower the vehicle and thereby ease the effort of entering or exiting – or of loading or unloading cargo. Combined with the legendary Range Rover permanent four-wheel-drive system, EAS is a formidable asset under all road conditions. And road conditions, as you know, can vary widely. To meet these changing demands, Range Rover offers its patented Terrain Response, a system unique to Range Rover and other Land Rover vehicles. The driver can select any one of five settings for this fully automatic system. You can even view information about each of these modes by touching the corresponding icon on the 4x4 Driver Information Center screen. The Electronic Air Suspension and Terrain Response, like so many other features of your Range Rover, are intended to enhance the experience of driving what is arguably the benchmark in luxury sport-utility vehicles.
Note: Terrain Response cannot regulate all the factors that influence vehicle control. Please practice safe driving techniques.

ACTIVE SAFETY MEANS MORE THAN B U C K L I N G Y O U R S A F E T Y B E L T. • Active Roll Mitigation (ARM) • Cornering Brake Control (CBC) • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) • Four-channel, all-terrain Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) • Four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) • Hill Descent Control (HDC) • All-terrain Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)

Thinking ahead. Active safety, concisely put, means avoiding accidents. Delving more deeply into the definition, active safety comprises all those systems that aid the driver in making any maneuver aimed at accident avoidance. Maintaining composure. The best-known among Range Rover’s active safety devices is permanent four-wheel drive, which helps ensure that each wheel does its part in maintaining traction. But many additional systems and components also contribute to accident avoidance and vehicle equilibrium.* The four-channel, all-terrain Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), coupled with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), helps ensure optimal stopping ability under a wide range of conditions. On top of that, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) can deliver maximum ABS actuation when it’s needed most, and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) adds stability when stopping and cornering at the same time. Adding confidence and control. Four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) gives the Range Rover permanent 4WD system an extra layer of capability, Hill Descent Control (HDC) adds confidence to off-road descents, while all-terrain Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) helps to reduce the chance of skidding.* Finally, Active Roll Mitigation (ARM) can detect and help mitigate a rollover situation. Providing plenty of foresight and hindsight. There’s more. Consider what Range Rover does to improve visibility, for example. To shield your eyes from sun and headlights, dual-blade sliding sun visors help eliminate unwanted light. The inside rearview mirror dims automatically, and both the front windshield and rear window are heated to remove visibilityimpairing ice and condensate. A rearview camera lets you see what lies behind when you engage Reverse gear, and bi-Xenon headlights help ensure that obstacles will not escape your notice. *
Drive responsibly, always wear your safety belt, and secure children in the rear seat. Even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It is always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions.

an extra layer of protection that is always close at hand.
Ready in an instant. Should an accident be unavoidable, your Range Rover’s passive safety systems activate in milliseconds. On duty even before an accident occurs is the body and chassis structure surrounding the driver and passengers. It is designed to distribute the forces of an impact over as wide an area as possible, accomplished by progressive deformable crumple zones. Peace of mind designed in. Other passive safety systems include three-point safety belts, airbag Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS),* and structural components aimed at reducing impact effect. These expertly designed and engineered systems bear a closer look. Both front and rear occupants have three-point safety belts and head restraints. The front seats have safety belts with pre-tensioners, plus whiplash-reduction head restraints. Outboard safety belts can be adjusted to fit your size. The rear seat incorporates the LATCH system designed for compatible child-safety seats. Nine reasons to help you relax. The Supplemental Restraint Systems, known more familiarly as airbags, work automatically. There are no fewer than nine of these: Driver and dual-threshold front-passenger airbags, driver’s knee airbag and side thorax airbags for front seating positions. Finally, there are separate head-protection side-curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seating positions. Safety preserved by strength. The occupants are further protected by side-impact beams located in each door. A collapsible steering column is another protection for the driver. In the event of an accident, the collision-activated inertia switch will perform three functions automatically and immediately: Shut off the fuel pump, unlock the doors and activate the hazard lights.

Driver and passenger comfort is ensured – even in weather extremes – by specially integrated units that pump either heat or cold air through the front seats.* A simple twist of the adjustable rotary knob on the center console regulates the seat temperature with reassuring precision. Heated front and rear seats are a standard feature on both Supercharged and HSE models.
The seats in a Range Rover are more than a comfortable, leather-lined place to sit – they are systems in themselves, incorporating side airbags and whiplash-reduction head restraints. What’s more, the Luxury Interior Package includes 14-way power-adjustable, heated and cooled front seats for optimal comfort and convenience.*
The ergonomically designed electronic parking brake becomes a useful adjunct to the operation of a Range Rover. It engages the parking brake at a touch. Moreover, it releases automatically once a gear is selected and pressure is applied to the accelerator.

To keep everyone comfortable, the triple-zone automatic climate control allows the driver, front passenger and rear-seat occupants to select their own environment. This quiet-running system is engineered to remove prodigious amounts of heat and humidity from the interior, even on those hot, sultry days. On cold days, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are welcome.
The available DVD-capable entertainment center, which is beyond state-of-the-art, offers two 6.5-inch LED screens and wireless headphones. A remote control device puts you a simple touch away from music or movies, and stows neatly in the center armrest, which has been purposely redesigned for 2008. Think of the Rear Seat Entertainment System as a media room on wheels.
In addition to standard front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC), the Range Rover central display screen automatically displays a view of what’s behind the vehicle when you engage Reverse. A rearview camera, mounted near the rear license plate, gives a wide-angle view of hazards or obstacles behind the rear bumper.

RANGE ROVER ENGINEERING
H I G H LY R I G I D B O D Y S T R U C T U R E The strength of the Range Rover’s body and chassis are the foundation of the sense of wellbeing that every Range Rover owner enjoys. The body structure’s torsional rigidity – its resistance to twisting forces – has been measured at 18,400 pound-feet (25,000 Nm) of torque per degree of
COMMANDSHIFT body flex. That’s strong. What this means to those who drive and ride in a Range Rover is improved safety, durability, comfort, off-road capability, on-road dynamic control and refinement. In short, all of the qualities that make a Range Rover like nothing else, begin here.
CommandShift manual mode allows you to enjoy more of Range Rover’s energetic responsiveness, giving you full manual control over gear selection. Range Rover Supercharged even adds Positive Torque, which momentarily blips the throttle to match engine revs to vehicle speed. The result – more “feel” to your shifts, quicker response time, and smoother transitions between gears, especially on downshifts.
27
lets you take driving challenges in stride.
HILL DESCENT CONTROL
ADAPTIVE FRONT LIGHTING
PERMANENT FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
In demanding off-road situations such as down an uncomfortably steep hillside, a fingertip touch will engage Hill Descent Control. HDC then takes over activation of the brakes and throttle, applying electronic controls to keep downhill speed to a preset threshold without driver intervention. If desired, you can even adjust this threshold speed via the steering-wheel-mounted cruise control buttons.
The available Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS) will automatically adjust the bi-Xenon headlight beams from left to right as you drive along curving roads. It accomplishes this by sensing steering input and the movement of the vehicle, with the result that the road ahead remains optimally illuminated – a valuable safety enhancement.
The Range Rover’s permanent four-wheel-drive system boasts a two-speed electronic transfer gearbox, plus an infinitely variable center differential that can apply 90 percent of the power to the front or rear wheels depending on conditions. More than that, four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (4ETC) can keep the Range Rover moving even if only one wheel has traction.

Please remember that the safety belts in Range Rover constitute the primary protection system for driver and passengers in collisions. The airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is a supplement to the safety belts. Although airbags provide additional protection, airbags alone are not sufficient. Always wear your safety belts. Children younger than 12 years old should always be properly restrained in a back seat, away from airbags. Never place an infant seat in the front seat. Subscription not included. SIRIUS Satellite Radio is not available in Alaska, Hawaii or Canada. Ask your Land Rover Retailer for details.
