Princess and brilliant cut diamonds adorn this wedding band
IT'S SPRING AGAIN AND LOVE IS IN THE AIR! It's this time of year that people's thoughts often turn to love. Engagements, weddings and anniversaries often take place in Spring when the sun shines longer and hearts melt after the cooler months of Winter. Many of these special moments are celebrated with beautiful jewellery, with rings that express love for one another. It's a tradition that has been around for nearly six thousand years, right back to Ancient Egypt. It was believed then that the third finger of the left hand contains a special vein that is directly linked to the heart and this is why wedding and engagement rings are worn on that particular finger today. Bairnsdale based jewellers Curtis Australia can't claim six thousand years of heritage but they do have over four decades of experience in engagement, wedding, anniversary and 'just because' rings. Master Jeweller Glenn Curtis and his talented team have helped hundreds of couples celebrate their important milestones, from helping choose a diamond to designing and hand crafting their rings.
GLENN SAYS 'THE KEY IS TO LISTEN TO WHAT PEOPLE WANT' BEFORE HE GUIDES THEM THROUGH THE ENJOYABLE PROCESS OF CREATING THEIR SPECIAL JEWELLERY. 'Even people who don't know what they are looking for are inspired by the collections we have on display and the pictures we can show of pieces made for other couples' says Glenn, who enjoys meeting clients in the relaxed surroundings of the Curtis showroom, where he freely offers advice and design ideas.

This Art deco style ring is set with diamonds and princess cut sapphire
When talking of gems, there's obviously a wide choice, but for engagements especially diamond is still the favourite. Most people know about the 4 'C's' – colour, clarity, cut and carat - and while these are important, the appeal of an individual diamond to you is the most significant factor. It's important to visit a reputable jeweller and see diamonds in person, look at them alongside others in store and gain an understanding of the choices for yourself. A good jeweller will answer all your questions without hesitation, and nothing beats seeing diamonds with your own eyes.
Hours of dedicated skill go into every Curtis ring
Styles of engagement rings vary tremendously – there are solitaires (single gem rings) and a more recent trend for 'halo rings' where the centre diamond is surrounded by a shimmering halo of smaller diamonds. Curtis designers and jewellers use a combination of traditional and leading edge techniques to create your ring - with everything done in house.
An unusual diamond set wedding ring with decorative sides
At the Bairnsdale studio of jewellers Curtis Australia, you'll find beautifully crafted rings that will either capture your heart straight away, or inspire you to create something special just for you or your intended. Whichever route you take, you'll be assured of the very best in customer service, with the experienced international award winning team at Curtis on hand to help. But what if you want to express your sentiments less formally? There are plenty of 'just because' moments in life that can be celebrated with jewellery. The craftsmen at Curtis have helped hundreds of couples from all walks of life celebrate their love for each other. Every story is different, intensely personal and extremely important. Making people happy is a simple sentiment perhaps, but it's one that the jewellers at Curtis live for and keeps them enjoying every moment of their craft. Of this, Glenn says 'Some days it doesn't even feel like work for us – we're incredibly lucky to be doing something we all love, and at the same time creating memories that help make people happy'. Curtis Australia www.curtisaustralia.com 03 5152 1089 Ring above in title A striking contemporary design with a pear shaped champagne diamond
Once you've chosen your special diamond, your ring can be created to encircle and embrace it. It's an important decision, as you'll have your ring for a long time to come. Designs for wedding rings can be as simple as a contoured plain band to a more elaborate design with two or more colours of gold. Wedding bands can even be shaped to fit around engagement rings to create a distinctive look. Men are becoming more aware of the choices in wedding bands and the craftsmen at Curtis have made some complex and distinctive designs.

Mary&
Their Story
The Proposal
The Wedding Day\
Jaye and Mary were introduced by Mary’s sister Julie in May 2010 and instantly connected. What started out as initial friendship, soon blossomed into love for the pair. Jaye, a local business owner and Mary, a pharmacy assistant both had children of similar ages, Jaxon and Georgia, so shared a lot in common.
An opportunity presented itself for Jaye when a family trip was planned to visit Mary’s younger sister Susie in Ocean Grove, which provided a picturesque setting for Jaye’s proposal.
The weather was typical Wonthaggi weather cold, wet and windy.
In 2012, after moving in together, they soon planned to start a family of their own and in April 2013, Archie and Ava – yes twins! - were born into a very loving and happy family.
They set about on their lunch date where Jaye had realised his plan was about to come to fruition and his nerves were building. He then remembered he had not asked for Mary’s father Phillip’s permission and made a quick dash to a nearby back lane and hiding behind a dumpster, Jaye was successful in contacting Phil, who reluctantly consented. Mary and Jaye (with the ring concealed in its huge box) then made their way to the cliff tops of Barwon Heads. Every time Jaye was ready to propose, people walking past interrupted him. Finally, the moment arrived but because of nerves, Jaye had no idea what he said, or how he said it as he went blank. But the most important part is that Mary said YES!!
20
thelifestyle weddings 2017
Jaye and his groomsmen of Jared, Jess and Adam played golf in the morning followed by a gourmet lunch provided by Glenys Johnson, Adam’s mother. Jaye who never gets nervous (other than when he proposed) was a bundle of nerves. At Mary’s sister Julie’s, Mary and her stunning bridesmaids: Susie, Julie and Megan started with make-up at 7:30am and the rest of the day getting ready, as you do, whilst having champagne and lunch.
The ceremony was held at the beautiful Wonthaggi State Coal Mine, which provided the rustic setting both bride and groom were after. The ceremony was delayed by around 20 minutes due to Jaye forgetting the music and then it poured rain just as Mary and her bridesmaids arrived. But with 120 freezing cold guests, the show had to go on.
&Jaye Once the music arrived and the rain cleared, the ceremony was perfect and it all went to plan. Jaye’s vows were mixed with humour and commitment to the rest of their lives with some of the finest cliché’s known to man. For example: You are the fork to my knife and promising to love Mary like Forrest loves Jenny (from the movie Forrest Gump) and offer up his credit card for exclusive use. Mary was straight to the point with a short and sweet testimonial to her love and commitment to Jaye and their future. The vows followed with a short and slightly comedic poem on true love. A photoshoot then followed at the coal mine and then on the shoreline of Cape Paterson boat ramp.
The Reception
The Music
The reception was then held at the newly renovated Wonthaggi Club which once again was chosen due to the modern rustic feel Jaye and Mary were looking for. The two course meal with a selection of three entrees and three main meals prepared by head chef Chris Harmon and staff, with the glorious wedding cake as dessert.
The music, which was by Melbourne based artist Tommy Rando, accompanied by special guest Tim Wild who was a member of the popular early 2000’s band Taxiride.
To add to the rustic theme they also added the following to the room: ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡
Tommy was always first choice for Mary and Jaye as they stumbled across one of his performances at Crown Casino in 2011 and vowed to track him down for their wedding day. Jaye and Mary then enjoyed a nine day (child free) honeymoon in Thailand.

Advice for other couples
“Enjoy the experience. The day goes super quick and its over before you know it. You often think the day after… was all that stress worth it for one day?? Leanne & Daniel 18 March 2017
Initially looking to hold our wedding at home, we were rapidly running out of time, with the work still required including renovations, sourcing wedding suppliers was far from our thoughts. Through a work colleague, we discovered The Bride’s Day Out in 2016 to be held at the Cobb & Co Stables in Sale. Within thirty seconds of entering the venue that morning, we had decided the Stables was to be our reception venue. It had the warmth, atmosphere and charm we had been searching for, but unable to find until that point. Within the following sixty minutes at the Bride’s Day Out, we had locked in our venue, bar service, photographer and celebrant, and afterwards, our caterer. The Bride’s Day Out at the Cobb & Co Stables absolutely kick started our wedding plans into action, transforming what seemed an overwhelming task, into and easy seamless process. Our suppliers and vendors were amazing to deal with, all contributing to what became a fabulous wedding day for us.

Located in the Latrobe Valley in Gippsland, only 12k from Morwell, Traralgon & Churchill and serving the Sale, Moe, Warragul & South Gippsland areas. This garden was commenced in 1997 - from the humble beginnings of an old hay shed, standing in the middle of an open paddock, no trees no shrubs, surrounded by nothing, the old shed has been transformed into a beautiful fernery. Stephen and Ashlea had all the guests believing they were attending the couple’s engagement party, but as guests began to arrive at the retreat on the Friday before the wedding, they were informed that they were actually attending the couple’s wedding. The celebrations began with a Friday night BBQ on the foreshore, where family and friends mingled and introduced each other.

Drinks were held on the foreshore while the family photos were taken and then onward to the reception centre where the guests enjoyed Mark’s wood fired roasts.

WEDDINGS IDEAS
Whatever you do, be sure to try your style ahead of time. Your hair stylist and beautician are the best persons to get advice. Last minute surprises are the last thing you want on your wedding day! Schedule your makeup and hair trail run appointment two months before the wedding. Here are just a few suggestions...
HAIRSTYLES
MAKEUP
■
A sophisticated, classic updo.
■
High top knot bun is a great trend as it shows your beautiful face and you can pair it with some bling.
■
The curly, pretty ringlets.
■
A romantic pulled back loose waves – pulling back a few pieces of your hair with a low veil and gorgeous jewellery.
■
Brides usually look best in very natural colours, save your teal eyes and orange/dark ruby coloured lips for the honeymoon. A little bit of sparkle on your lips and smoky eye effects are the go. Your wedding day is not a time to experiment, as long as you feel that you look your best. Glowing, not shiny skin and rosy cheeks are a never fail. If you are a bit of a crier it is best that you don’t wear false eyelashes, and waterproof mascara is a must.
■
Pass on the bright colourful painted nails and choose a natural looking sheer polish.
■
Make sure your makeup will last. Though it might feel otherwise, your wedding day is a marathon and you’ll want your makeup to hold up through every last photo, toast and dance! Remember that you will be looking at your wedding photos for years to come.
■
A side low looped bun with a wraparound braid paired with a cage veil.
■
A rustic braided updo hairstyle paired with cascading veil.
■
Sexy, wavy hairstyle for long hair – tousled beachy hair – looks fantastic with a headband and/or veil.
TIP
■
■
Sweet short hair style together with a birdcage headpiece.
■
A flowered, curled side pony is perfect and the flower, crystal clip is a romantic touch.
■
Remember to have hair and makeup trials. Also, ensure that you have left enough time for hair and makeup on the day, and that your bridesmaids get hair and makeup out of the way first, therefore leaving time for the bride. Set aside an extra half hour to an hour.
■
Most importantly... take the time to breath and enjoy your day!!!

Speeches
Not too many of us like to make speeches.
We become a little jittery and anxious, and start counting down the minutes until the ceremony. Of course, some people are naturals. For those that are not, we have some tips on how to manage it.
WEDDINGS IDEAS The first and most important item to remember is that the guests you are delivering your speech to are your friends and family. They love and care for you and are not there to criticise your speech. The second is that preparation is vital. Give yourself time to write and plan your speech and time to practise it. This method helps you feel comfortable about the substance of your speech and makes sure you don’t forget anyone – the ones that have helped you prepare for this special occasion and especially not your new husband or wife! It helps to know the conventional things you should include in your speech as that presents a good background.
This will have you speaking like a professional... practise... practise and more practise. Your wedding is a truly memorable day. OUTLINE
The bride’s father customarily speaks first, saying how proud he and his wife are of their daughter. Next, he will welcome the groom as his new son-in-law and his parents. He should express that he is very confident of the couple’s future together and give them some words of wisdom about marriage’s success; and maybe a short story about his daughter (and new son-in-law). To the point is best. Then finish with a toast to the bride and groom. The groom will respond on behalf of himself and his new beautiful bride by thanking his father-in-law for his speech and the bride’s parents
58
thelifestyle weddings 2017
for such a beautiful daughter and allowing him to marry her. The most important one is to tell his bride how wonderful AND BEAUTIFUL she is, and how lucky he is to be given the opportunity to have met her and fallen in love with her. He should then thank his own parents for everything they have done during his life. Thank the guests for coming and their presents and also thank anyone that has helped on and leading up to this day. If there are any friends or close relations that could not attend this event, express regret that they could not be there to share your day. Then finally, thank the best man and recognise the friendship and support he has given. Also, propose a toast to the bridesmaids. (This will lead into the best man’s speech.) The best man will reply on behalf of the bridesmaids by offering thanks on their behalf for the groom’s toast and also add a few compliments of his own about them. He should then talk about what a good friend and man the groom is, and relate a story or two of their friendship together and perhaps the meeting between the bride and groom. He can then read any emails or cards. (Remembering that short and sweet is good, as you want your guests not to be too bored with the traditional aspect.) Advise the program for the rest of the evening and handing it over to the MC. The MC can introduce anyone else who wishes to speak – maybe the father of the groom, the bride or any other guest who may wish to speak? (Of course, limiting the number of speakers if needed as often the guests by now have had a couple of drinks and it might become a little unruly!) He can then organise the cutting of the cake for the bride and groom, then the bridal waltz and distribution of the cake or dessert (depending on whether you want to use the cake as your dessert).
TIPS
Prepare the speech well in advance. Read and re-read it, making sure you have not left anything out.
Make the speech easy to read by writing/ typing it in dark coloured ink. If you have memorised it, it will be easy to glance at it and prompt you.
Keep it short!
Try not to repeat yourself and be clear on what you need to say and what others will be saying, so you don’t repeat anything and bore the guests. Speak slowly and distinctly and not deviate from what needs to be said, as you can start to ramble.
Double check before leaving the house that you have brought your speech with you!
Don’t have too many drinks before the speech. A couple could calm the nerves but more could be detrimental.
Try and relax and enjoy your event!

Sarah & Michael
Sarah and Michael first met when Michael had moved overseas following a career in music. ‘Couch surfing’ with his band mates at Sarah’s shared apartment in Hamburg put Michael and Sarah in close quarters, allowing their connection to flourish. When love blossoms across continents it can bring challenges for planning weddings. Sarah and Michael inevitably planned two separate wedding celebrations, the first being in Australia and second in Hamburg upon their return. It’s a rare occasion to arrive in your bathers to photograph a wedding, but it is something I hope to welcome again. Trudging down the sand dunes with camera in hand I followed Sarah and Michael as they led friends down onto the sunny shores of Sandy Point. A morning session in the surf was part of the wedding invitation, something their German friends absorbed with enthusiasm. After a post surf game of soccer, it was with slightly weary limbs and sun kissed skin that everyone headed back to Prom Coast Holiday Lodge. Sandy bodies were washed and decorations hung whilst the Bride and Groom helped each

other get ready. In no time at all the afternoon had moved gently from sea sprayed hair and bathers to sharp threads and sequins. Walking each other down the aisle, the couple were met with rapturous applause, feelings of gratitude already on everyone’s faces for being part of the celebrations. The ceremony was divided into six parts, three close friends of Sarah and three of Michael all reading parts of text that the couple had written. The words rang with emotion from opposite sides of the world. It was beautiful.
I believe small weddings allow you to feel the emotion of such a life moment deeper. The interactions are more intimate, the connections to those present always strong and time feels like it is given the space it needs for everyone to enjoy the moment. Celebratory hugs and toasts to family and friends near and far followed the end of the ceremony, meaning it was time for us to disappear down to the picturesque Waratah Bay for some photos. Strolling down the beach Michael noted that the wispy sea spray and afternoon light were strongly reminiscent of the day he proposed to

Sarah when they had been back visiting family in Australia. Sometimes perfect moments find you twice. Upon our return, the sun’s golden rays sank over the grounds of Prom Coast Lodge, providing stunning scenery for everyone to mingle. Scrumptious home style food was catered for on-site by Brent Sinclair Catering, helping create a casual outdoor dining experience. From the vantage point of the deck, cheers erupted when coloured smoke arose into the twilight sky from the neighbouring paddock.
A surprise play with smoke flares signalling the evening’s frivolity had begun! The fun continued to increase with fabulous tunes amplified bringing the dance floor action to its peak. Sarah and Michael’s Australian celebration was incredible to be a part of. Even though they call Hamburg home, a part of their story will always be in Australia. Some love crosses oceans and leaves footprints so genuine that no wave can ever erase. Words: Lauren Murphy
