coastline because of wind, storms and ocean currents. The shifting dune is a common phenomenon in sandy areas. If the sand is eroding in one place, then it is building up elsewhere. Prevailing winds roll the surface sand from the bottom of the windward side of the dune over the top and down the leeward side. In time, the entire dune may be rolled for miles. No one can calculate how many eons of time have passed since Siesta Key sand first appeared from fragmented rock, but Siesta Key sand is quite old. We know this not only because of the fine grains but also because other components of the original rock, such as feldspar, mica and other minerals, have almost completely disappeared, leaving only the extremely hard quartz. Siesta Key’s beaches have been

recognized for cleanliness, water quality and safety by one of the world’s top experts, Dr. Stephen Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach) of the National Healthy Beaches Campaign, and qualifies as a Blue Wave Beach by the Clean Beaches Council. The Travel Channel ranks Siesta as one of the nation’s top-10 beaches. So now you know why Siesta Key sand is ranked tops in the world. It feels soft and cool to your bare feet — even in the strongest Florida sun — and that means great beach walking. Lifeguard Stations There are four lifeguard stations along Siesta Beach. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day; and 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. For information and beach conditions, call (941) 861-2150. Since the stations are four different colors they are helpful to distinguish meeting locations for family and friends.

There’s always something to do at Siesta Beach, and it’s within easy walking distance of the many shops and restaurants in Siesta Village. CRESCENT BEACH. Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters, and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet because it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks — a lovely snorkeling and diving area rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only

cool to the feet. Among the many awards, it has earned are “The Whitest, Finest Beach Sand ™ in the World” (The Great International White Sand Challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and the best beach in America (Dr. Beach, 2011, 2016, 2017). Walking along, or swimming and playing in the Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks. Others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and volleyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convenient concession stands. Shallow water near the shoreline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience away from the crowds. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, volleyball court, and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch, and fishing is permitted in the adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. This is a great location for paddle-boarding and other water activities. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local nightspots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beachcombers and shell collectors. Many find petrified shark teeth to take home and treasure — especially after a storm.

Campground Information From sunrise to sunset, there’s nothing quite like the experience of camping on a Florida beach. Turtle Beach Campground, located on Siesta Key, offers one of the few remaining opportunities to park a recreational vehicle or pitch a tent near the Gulf of Mexico and wake up the next morning under the Florida sun. The park features 40 sites for camping, with areas for both RVs and tents. Electricity and cable TV hookups are available. Popular activities include relaxing on the beach, swimming, kayaking, 16

canoeing, and browsing through a variety of shops. Some of the finest restaurants on Florida’s Gulf Coast are within walking distance or just a short drive away. Call (941) 349-3839 for reservation information.

Siesta Key Drum Circle The drum circle takes place on Siesta Key Beach about an hour (or two) before sundown, every Sunday. Bring a djembe, drum, cowbell or anything that makes noise, and you are part of the ensemble. Bring good mood, willingness to dance, desire to listen, or curiosity to witness the belly dancers, and you are part of the entertained audience. Everyone is welcome! It is the home of the African, Latin, Caribbean, dance, rock ‘n’ roll (you name it) rhythms. No rules, just fun, which is why the Siesta Key Drum Circle has grown to one of the largest in the country.

Siesta Key Farmers Market Don’t panic, it’s organic! The Siesta Key Farmers Market offers delicious spring greens, herbs, raw foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, home-baked pastries and bread, fresh-cut flowers, specialty cheeses, coffees, soaps, jellies, and seafood, together with music, entertainment and more. Siesta Key is nestled between the Gulf of Mexico, the Intracoastal Waterway, Sarasota Bay and Roberts Bay. Varying water, temperatures and depths form habitats that nurture an amazing variety of fish species. While on a single fishing trip, you may explore estuaries, mangroves and reefs. Note: An estuary is where river water meets sea water. This creates a system of mixed salt and fresh water and encourages productive fish habitats. Many of Florida’s recreational fish and shellfish spend part of their lives in these sheltered areas. Estuaries are considered “cradles of the ocean.” There’s more than one way to catch a fish on Siesta Key: surf casting, spin or fly fishing, shore fishing, wading the grass flats and even bridge fishing. Charter and cruise boat fishing with or without a captain or guide is probably 20

the most popular island sport. You can find every type of watercraft and all the fishing gear you need on the Key.
