Collier County prepares for busy hurricane season By Don Manley manley@swspotlight.com

Hurricane Irma’s fury provided hard-to-forget lessons in the importance of being prepared should disaster strike. Memories of properties ravaged by wind and water during the Sept. 10 storm, a crippled electrical grid and a recovery period that has yet to end for some, are still fresh for many people. The roughly 10 years since a hurricane last struck Southwest Florida may have lulled some into a false sense of security, but category 3 Irma was a stark reminder of what the storms can do. “I think Irma woke everybody up quite well in Collier County,” said Dan Summers, director of Collier County’s Bureau of Emergency Services. “We had a tremendous learning opportunity, communitywide, and you don’t want to “I think Irma woke make the same mistakes twice. We fight everybody up quite well complacency, even six or seven months in Collier County.” later. One of these storms can be a — Dan Summers, director of life-changing event. We don’t want people Collier County’s Bureau to go into this season thinking we won’t get hit two years in a row.” of Emergency Services With the June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season mere weeks away, the time is rapidly approaching to finalize preparations for what is expected to be a busier than normal year. Experts from Colorado State University, regarded as the nation’s top hurricane forecasters, are predicting 14 named tropical storms before the season’s Nov. 30 conclusion, with seven becoming hurricanes. The average is 12 tropical storms and six hurricanes. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when wind speed reaches 74 mph. Of the seven predicted hurricanes, three are expected to be category 3, 4 or 5, with minimum sustained winds of 111 mph. Summers said maintaining peak readiness is job one for his department and its component agencies, and he hopes all residents and businesses take the same approach. “We’re going to work hard to make our community as resilient as possible and that effort starts at home too,” he said. Information can be found online on how to prepare, what to do during and after a hurricane, shelter information and much more at a variety of websites, including www.collierem.org (click on one of the topics under

The emergency management’s Twitter page can be found at @CollierEM and on Facebook, it’s facebook.com/pg/CollierEM. Collier County also has a 24-hour information hotline while its Emergency Operations Center is open during a storm. The hotline can be reached by dialing 311 within the county and (239) 252-8444 from other areas. Summers said one lesson gleaned from the Hurricane Irma experience is that the former recommendation that preparedness kits contain 72 hours of bottled water, shelf-stable meals, fuel for generators and other essentials, should be lengthened to four or five days, given the extended power outages in the storm’s wake. The Bureau of Emergency Services also learned lessons from Irma. “One of the things that we want to focus on is building more shelter capability,” said Summers. “We have a terrific partner with the Collier County school district, but we want to identify more manpower to help support those shelters, as well as get more supplies and equipment for a larger number of shelters.” He also wants to find a better way to handle staffing during emergency operations. “We worked a lot of people 24 and 26 hours straight and that may be OK for one day, but you can’t do that for a couple days,” said Summers. “So we’re trying to make sure that from a safety perspective, the people who are working on utilities and streets and those type things, that we get them the proper rest. We don’t need people who are overly tired working in critical safety locations.”

Hurricane season officially begins on June 1, with the height of the season peaking September 10. However, it’s not too early to get prepared, according to Lee County officials. At a recent hurricane preparedness seminar, residents of Bonita Bay heard from Sandra Tapfumaneyi, who serves as the operations chief for Lee County Emergency Management. With Irma and its aftermath still very much on residents’ minds, Tapfumaneyi had a captive audience anxious to learn about available resources to help prepare residents in the event of another hurricane. Emergency preparedness involves acknowledging the threat, identifying your options ahead of time, securing supplies and resources and then, when necessary, putting your plan into action. First, know your zone. Lee County evacuates by zones for storm surge and wind. Find your evacuation zone at LeeEOC.com or by using the free Lee Alert app which can be downloaded from iTunes or Google Play app stores. The LeeEOC site also lists upcoming preparedness seminars, shelter information, how to sign up for alerts and how to download a family emergency plan.

Quick review: Storm shutter tips for home

going to make your life tough; two coats require WD40 and a hammer and swear words. Ask me how I know. Even better, find someone in May or June and don’t be afraid to put them up weeks before a storm.

By Chris Griffith griffith@swspotlight.com

Hurricane Irma taught us a lot about hurricane protection. It provided a great opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others so that you or your family can avoid being hurt or your property damaged by something as small as a wing nut. Here are a few hurricane shutter pitfalls that you, as a homeowner, may not have thought about or would think of only when you’re in the thick of a storm.

Accordion shutters

Impact windows pose their own problems. Remember, if your power goes out and you left through your overhead garage door without a key… you won’t be getting in. You can’t jimmy a window or even break a window to get in. I know locksmiths who have made a fortune picking front door locks for homeowners.

If you have accordion shutters, periodically open and close them but beware of wasps. They like to build nests in them. Find a way to not lose View from space of a hurricane over the ocean with moon the keys for the shutters. in background. Photo montage with photos courtesy of I don’t know what the visibleearth.nasa.gov solution is for that but you need to have dozens of keys and keep a few in a safe or jewelry box so they do not get lost.

Manual storm shutters

Roll-down shutters

If you have manual storm shutters, now’s the time to check them. Checking your shutters should include counting the panels and finding the bag or box with your wing nuts and bolts. Do yourself a favor and purchase a small fishing tackle box and clearly label it “wing nuts and bolts for storm shutters.” Consider trading one or two of your metal panels for clear panels because you are going to want to look outside and with metal panels your home will be dark as a cave. If the exterior of your home has been repainted anytime between the last storm and the next storm it will be incredibly hard to get your storm panel bolt heads into the slots. They are engineered to not have a lot of wiggle room and one coat of paint is

Plywood on builder-grade windows

Impact windows

Many home owners “set it and forget it” with roll-down shutters. But they need to be periodically opened and closed to make sure they work. Finding service when a storm is barreling toward you is nearly impossible. Locate your manual hand crank. You’ll need it if or when the power goes out.

There are many homes in Southwest Florida with no storm protection whatsoever. Trust me when I tell you that it doesn’t take long for plywood and other plywood-shaped resources to run dry even a few weeks before a storm hits. Buy, cut to size and store them way before the storm.

Family and the community benefit from 12 Seasons’ healthy practices By Dayna Harpster dayna@swspotlight.com

Danny Blank, owner of 12 Seasons Farm on Old Olga Road in Fort Myers, says he faced a critical decision in 2011. He was using the usual pesticides on the fruits and vegetables on the 10-acre farm he bought in 2002. But Blank and his wife, Vicki, were expecting their first child. “And I wanted my kids to be able to eat the dirt from the farm,” he said one afternoon while giving a visitor a tour on a golf cart. The Blanks didn’t anticipate serving dirt for dinner, but rather knew that kids plus farm equals some dirt inevitably passing the young lips. “I didn’t like using the chemicals, either,” he said. In line with the trend toward healthy eating and organic products, Blank switched to deterring bugs and vermin with various essential oils, which he still uses today on the heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, lychee, avocado, peppers, zucchini and other produce. It’s more labor-intensive than chemical spraying, but presumably healthier. Although he can’t officially claim to be growing organic products, Blank does use organic methods and said his customers understand that. The process of being certified organic is lengthy and expensive, he said. Southwest Floridians can sample the fruits of his labors on Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. at the farmers market at the Purple Spoon in Bonita Springs, from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays in season at The Promenade in Bonita Springs, through 12 Seasons’ co-op program or with a meal ordered at several local restaurants including Harold’s in Fort Myers, the Royal Poinciana Golf Club and the Bay House restaurant in Naples and others. Half of the farm’s income comes from restaurants and half from consumers, Blank said. He frequently hosts tours and farm-to-table and other events — more expensive than he can afford, 12 Seasons Farm owner Danny Blank with his Blank said with a laugh heirloom tomatoes. — on the property. The farm sponsors a CSA, or community supported agriculture, co-op program in which individuals economically support the farm in return for a weekly or biweekly box of goods from it. Passing the young lychee orchard on our farm tour, we smelled the thyme that emerged most strongly from an oil combination an employee – of which there are four working full time on the farm — recently had sprayed. Near one of the three tomato houses, we detected the much more pleasant scent of rosemary. When Blank bought his farm, he was going to continue growing citrus. Then in 2006 citrus greening happened. He lamented the beautiful citrus landscape all over Florida 10 years ago that seems mostly gone. To continue growing citrus today, he said, “there’s a suite of practices you have to do, and it’s about as nonorganic as you can get.” So with the onset of greening, Blank knew he needed to diversify. He began planting other crops between the stunted citrus trees until he had a robust farm of other produce — and a pasture of chickens. The name 12

It also refers to a passage in the book of Revelation in the Bible, Blank said, in which the tree of life is described as one bearing 12 fruits, signifying God’s intention of fullness and abundance for our lives. A graduate of Houghton College in New York state with a degree in environmental biology, Blank grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. After college, he interned for ECHO in North Fort Myers. He stayed on, then, for 16 years in various roles including as an agricultural educator before buying the farm. “I love the lifestyle of farming and wanted to raise a family in “I love the lifestyle of this context,” he said. “It’s a hard life, but farming and wanted to a good one.” raise a family in this Danny and Vicki Blank were married context,” he said. in 2010, and now are the parents of Simeon, 6, Annika, 4, and Josiah, 2. My farm tour over, I waved to the boys, who were standing side by side at the edge of the Blanks’ driveway, right next to the farm. They were waving, too, as I pulled onto Old Olga Road. They didn’t look like they’d been transferring any dirt from ground to mouth, but with kids, you never can tell. Their parents know that not only the kids, but also the customers, are eating food grown in a healthy way.

Collier’s Reserve leadership recognized as among world’s best

Three Bonita Chamber staff members receive Guests First certification Three Bonita Chamber staff members earned the Certified Guest Service Professional designation April 12 at a ceremony held at the Lee County Administration Building. They are: Dawn Brewer, Charles Stanisce and Breanne Winter. They join Bonita Chamber Director of Special Projects, Cindy Burgess, as CGSPdesignated staff members. Guests First is an educational program offered by the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau since 2010 to help professionals in the hospitality industry polish their customer service skills.

Collier’s Reserve Country Club Past President Judith Stant was named one of BoardRoom magazine’s 20 most outstanding private club presidents for 2017. Stant is the only woman on the list, which includes club presidents from as far away as South Africa and New Zealand. She is just the third Collier’s Reserve president ever to serve two terms, the last of which concluded March 19 with the selection of Stephen Guillard as her successor. Pictured with Stant is Collier’s Reserve General Manager Nick von Hofen, who just completed his first year in the role. Von Hofen is focused on continuing to grow the membership and fostering satisfaction, making sure objectives are accomplished on time and on budget, and furthering the club’s commitment to excellence. Improvements over the past year include launching an entirely new sports/fitness center, which von Hofen said “has quickly become the social pillar of the club.”

Dining can be medicinal with mushrooms on the menu Mushrooms are commonly placed in the vegetable category but are technically classified as fungi. Mushrooms are fat free, gluten free, low calorie, low carbohydrate and nutritionally dense, containing natural antioxidants. They are a good source of B vitamins, trace minerals, fiber and the highest plant source of vitamin D available. Mushrooms naturally produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. A selection of shiitake mushrooms. The medicinal use of mushrooms has a very long tradition in Asian countries. Scientists are finding that mushrooms contain powerful compounds that lower inflammation and boost immune function. Mushrooms contain natural antibiotics (similar to penicillin), which can inhibit microbial growth and other fungal infections. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s website contains an herb section that provides information about several different mushrooms used for cancer prevention and treatment. The Mushrooms are fat free, most famous of the “immunity mushrooms” gluten free, low calorie, are shiitake, maitake and reishi but most low carbohydrate and mushrooms including the popular cremini and portobello are also great for this purpose. nutritionally dense. Shiitake mushroom cultivation is reported to have begun in China in the 12th century. Eritadenine, a compound in shiitake mushrooms, showed potential in helping the liver process cholesterol and other triglycerides in a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Researchers reported their conclusion that consumption of this mushroom lowers blood cholesterol by as much as 45 percent. Shiitake mushrooms also contain the chemical component lentinan, which is approved in Japan as an injectable drug to extend survival of patients in cancer treatments by preventing some of the damage from anti-cancer drugs. An oral formulation of lentinan was shown to be effective in extending survival rates in patients with stomach, colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancers. Maitake mushrooms are also used as adjunctive cancer treatments Continued on next page

throughout Asia. Dr. Robert Rountree, author of “Immunotics,” has shown maitake extract’s ability to shrink tumors. Maitake has been shown to lower blood glucose in rats. A study at Cornell Medical College found that reishi mushrooms reduced side effects during chemotherapy while improving quality of life. The beneficial components seemed to benefit blood pressure, HDL cholesterol rates, liver detoxification and adrenal function. One study suggests that reishi extracts may improve urinary flow in men with slight to moderate symptoms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Commonly found, cremini mushrooms are also very dense with nutrients, having more copper, potassium, protein and selenium than shiitake mushrooms. Research shows that extracts from creminis can reduce hormonal imbalances. A benefit of cremini mushroom nutrition is the high source of conjugated linolenic acid, which is a type of fatty acid that controls the production of estrogen and can stop cancerous tumor growth in some instances by blocking certain enzymes’ effects. Portobello, the flavorful vegetarian alternative to grilled meat burgers, provides more beneficial fiber. Fiber is known for its benefits to the digestive system and reducing the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Continued on page 20

Baked stuffed portobello mushrooms.

HealthyCHOICES Continued from page 19

There are more than 70,000 types of mushrooms, but only about 250 species are edible. When buying mushrooms, choose firm and unbruised specimens, preferably organic. Many people store them in the refrigerator in a paper bag (not plastic) to allow air to move in and out, keeping them in better condition. Wash before use. Mushrooms can be great raw in a salad, added to omelets, sautéed with onions as a side dish, added to kabobs or chopped and blended with ground meat. A quick recipe idea for portobellos is to clean them, remove the stems, and marinate in a mixture of olive oil, onion, garlic, and vinegar for an hour. Then place under a hot grill for 10 minutes. The information in this column is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Improve rhythm and timing with feet-together drill

Mark H. Montgomery, MD is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College. He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. Contributed

The feet-together drill can cure many ills, especially bad rhythm and timing. The drill promotes good footwork and balance, encourages a free arm swing and helps prevent lateral swaying on the back and forward swings. It also teaches the golfer to swing rhythmically and within his or her capabilities, which improves timing and swing mechanics. The procedure follows. With the ball teed up, use a short iron such as a 7, 8, or 9 iron and practice hitting balls with your feet together, literally touching. Concentrate on making solid contact with the ball rather than hitting it a long distance. Once you can hit good shots consistently, try hitting shots without a tee. Mark Moffatt is director of instruction at Shadow Wood Country Club. He can be reached at moffatt@swspotlight.com

Renew and grow your relationship with better communication It is not a secret that the divorce rate for first marriages is 50 percent; however, it is less well-known that the divorce rate for second marriages is 67 percent and for third marriages is 72 percent. Experiencing a breakup or divorce is a painful and often devastating experience. When children are involved, that experience is even more painful since children never divorce their parents. In the next two articles, I will share research-based information on how to grow and renew your relationship with your partner, and perhaps have a more positive outcome. One of the most important List qualities in your predictors in marital problems partner that you admire, and dissatisfaction is inadequate communication. We often bring our value and appreciate. ineffective communication patterns from our family of origins to our new relationships. When we don’t know how to handle the suffering inside us, we often continue to suffer and others suffer with us. Take time to understand your feelings, what is going on in your body, your emotions, and your perceptions. Share your feelings and remember, each of us is responsible for our thoughts and our own behavior. Tell your partner when you feel defensive, unappreciated, abandoned, unsafe, sad, etc. Describe how you feel and what you understand your partner said or did without attacking or blaming, and use the word “I” (“I felt, I thought, I heard”). Often when we are hurt by our partners we get angry. Instead of lashing out say, “I suffer. I need your help. Postpone your own agenda and be a good listener. When we listen to someone with the intention of helping that person suffer less we don’t judge. Try to understand your partner’s suffering. Most conflicts in relationships are perpetual (69 percent). We need skills to manage these conflicts. Acknowledge your responsibility in contributing to an argument. Apologize by saying something like this: “I was very grumpy. I overreacted.” Create a constructive plan for how each of you can make it better next time. Appreciate your partner. Way too often we take each other for granted. Tell your partner, “I am so lucky I met you.” List qualities in your partner that you admire, value and appreciate. Take time to grow and nurture your relationship with your loved one, and the fruits of your efforts will be increased: love, satisfaction and a life of greater happiness and joy. Cinnamon is the spice that makes life a joy D.K. Christi dk@swspotlight.com

Cinnamon, a 2-year-old miniature goldendoodle who weighs only 10 pounds, walks the patio that connects six condo units, visits with the residents and watches for strangers. When she tires of her responsibility for the neighborhood, she barks a little, Shirley Hettlinger opens her door and Cinnamon takes charge of her home domain. “She watches for the neighbors to come home or open their doors to her,” said Hettlinger. “If I need a dog sitter, neighbors are more than willing. Cinnamon is loved by everyone.” Hettlinger traveled the snowbird route for many years between destinations north and Florida, so when it was time for a dog she chose one that fits in a carry-on under an airplane When Hettlinger leaves seat. Her sons live in Colorado Cinnamon at home, she returns and Texas, two more destinations for the traveling twosome. to a game of hide and seek. Hettlinger’s companion of many years was ill when she bought Cinnamon. He enjoyed Cinnamon’s loving nature before he died. “My older sons didn’t want me to get a dog,” said Hettlinger. “They thought a dog was too much trouble for my age.” On the contrary, she has found Cinnamon all joy and comfort and no trouble. With her partner gone, Hettlinger appreciates Cinnamon’s companionship.

LOVING CARE FOR YOUR PETS:

May 2018

Cinnamon does have a mind of her own. During her initial training, she would have nothing to do with the dog pads. She made a point of missing them. She insisted on a walk. To further prove she’s a dog, she doesn’t allow clothing that is popular with many small dog owners and does not wish to be held like a baby. When Hettlinger leaves Cinnamon at home, she returns to a game of hide and seek. It’s as though Cinnamon says, “You left me. Now find me.” Shedding is not a problem and she has the run of the home. She’s not a barking dog and is very easy to manage in a condo. Cinnamon does like her walks in the neighborhood. She expects attention Cinnamon visits her neighbors and and hesitates on the walk to look in all watches for strangers. directions. If she sees someone in the distance, that’s the direction she chooses. Just before the other walker is near, she lays down to wait for the attention. Hettlinger says Cinnamon loves little children and patiently enjoys their petting. Swimming is not part of Cinnamon’s experience though she enjoys bathing and running around the bathroom wrapped in towels. A surprise is coming when she visits Hettlinger’s son. He has a pool and a poodle, Lucy, who will likely teach Cinnamon the joys of pool life. In the meantime, she has a toy chicken she loves to throw around, a whole bucket of toys — and a ball to catch before settling down to cuddle with Hettlinger.

CorkscrewSIGHTINGS

Corkscrew Swamp is place to celebrate Year of the Bird By Shelby Fischer Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Intern

They are living dinosaurs. Ten thousand of them are scattered around on every continent of the world. They are a significant indicator of environmental health. They are birds, and they are important. It may be the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese zodiac, but according to National Geographic, the National Audubon Society, and BirdLife International, it is Year of the Bird. This year was chosen as the Year of the Bird because it is the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. For an entire century, this particular act has protected more than 1,000 species of birds in the United States. Over the years, this act 2018 marks the is said to be responsible for saving from extinction centennial of the species like the sandhill crane, among others. Migratory Bird In the late 19th century, plume hunting was Treaty Act. at its peak. The demand for beautiful feathers placed in fancy hats was high, and hunters were happy to oblige for a good price. Mercifully, before all the snowy egrets and other species were wiped out, people started caring about the birds’ fate. Everglades wardens like Guy Bradley and Rhett Green got involved in the early 1900s, patrolling our local marshes and swamps, protecting these birds from extinction. Thanks to them and others, plume hunting may not be a

threat anymore, but birds are still at risk for other reasons. The human race is changing the planet quickly, making it harder for our birds to thrive. Climate change, pollution, and pesticides are all having direct impacts. We are developing on their land, destroying their habitats. It is not too late though. Birds do wonderful things for the environment. Scavengers like vultures that eat disease-carrying roadkill are our natural clean-up crew, hummingbirds pollinate plants, and many different species disperse An egret is just one of the birds that makes its home seeds. Some birds are an at Corkscrew Swamp. important prey source for predator animals, and some birds bring in money for the economy through tourism from people visiting to see a particular species. So what can we do to thank these birds who do such great things for us? We can plant native plants that provide fresh berries and ones that attract delicious caterpillars. Above all, you can get outside and enjoy them. Watch them and teach others about them. Birdwatching is truly a fun game that you can play your entire life, and it will never end. You may not see all 10,000 or so species, but you will certainly enjoy the ones you do see. Corkscrew is a wonderful place for you to come and learn more about birds and gain a new appreciation for them — an appreciation shared by Corkscrew Swamp staff and volunteers. The sanctuary is open every day from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information visit corkscrew.audubon.org.

Reel Deal Barbershop and Salon celebrates grand opening Jerry Hildebrand recently opened the doors at Reel Deal Barbershop and Salon, at 24611 Production Circle in Bonita Springs, across from Pelican Landing. Hildebrand, known to regulars as Jerry the Barber, brought in longtime Bonita stylist Sheri Bess and local barber Jay Ballard to help him with his vision. “I wanted to create a place where people could get great service, but also feel like a part of their community,” says Hildebrand. Vintage barber chairs sit against a backdrop of fishing décor and handmade coastal art by local artists. The Reel Deal team was at Estero Community Park last month at the Great Strides cystic fibrosis walk, giving haircuts for donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
