1703 EL Polstead Hall to London with Bishop Mark month above date. Willcocks 2, xxx Rated 'C'. Disinfected stain. Note the unique address and the writers comments "with care". 1712 EL Boxford to Stoke with Bishop Mark month above date. Willcocks 2, xxx Rated 'C'. Directed by 'Boxford Bagg' etc. Etc. "to be left at Beaumonts in Stoke". A house called "Club Room" was kept by a Michael Beaumont at this period. The charge was 7d.

1720 EL London to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'C'. The letter was written and posted on the 20th April 1720. It went through a London receiving office where it was stamped with the receivers initial "K", and the Inland Bishop Mark for 26 AP. The charge to Suffolk was 7d. The "K" initial has not been recorded.

1727 EL Sheffield to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark. Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. Written at Sheffield, Hants on the 4th January 1727 and directed "to goe by way of London please with care". The postage to London was 4d, then "m/s" 7d at London. Bishop Mark is 30 JA, making it 26 days before conveyance to Suffolk. The reason for delay could have been plague, as the letter appears to have been disinfected with sulphur and vinegar.

1733 EL London to Polsted Hall with Bishop Mark Willcocks 3, xx Rated 'B'. Charged 4d. To London, where it was "m/s" 7d., and back stamped with a Inland Bishop Mark 9JA. Directed "to goe by the way of London with care and speed". Back has a straight line town-stamp that is not clear. The letter deals with accounts and families since 1654.

London Penny Post and a 21 SE Inland Bishop Mark. 1740 EL London to Polsted Hall Willcocks 3, xxx Rated 'B'. London, through Colchester to Stratford St. Mary, where a branch road leads to Stoke-by-Nayland, on the Boxford route. Bishop Mark 21 FE. The charge was 7d.

To "go by way of Yarmouth". 1764 EL Woolpit to Bruges Willcocks 184, xx Rated 'E', xxxx Bishop Rated 'D'. SL Ipswich. Writer says "send my letters to Mr. Brook at Stowmarket". Mr. Brook was Postmaster during the 18th Century and Stowmarket was the nearest post office for London mail. A walking post went daily to and from Ipswich, 3d paid to London, 12th January inland stamp and General Post Paid in red were added.

Charge of 6d., to London where it was "m/s" 1N1, which illustrates the shortened AND between the shilling and penny. Straight line BRUGES and with foreign and inland Bishop marks. 1770 EL Bruges to Stowmarket Willcocks/002, xxxx F/B with Bishop Marks Rated 'B'. This letter illustrates how mailmen were responsible for the / between shillings and pence. Originally the full word AND was used. Gradually the A and D were left out, and the letter shows the N alone used, this too was shortened to / for swiftness. Bears the foreign branch Bishop Mark, day OC 17, with the inland mark day above the month 17 OC.

The letter would have been sent by carrier by arrangement with the Postmaster at Thetford. "Additional with a dish", was a reminder to the carrier that he had to deliver a dish with the letter to comply with the Regulation "General Carriers Letter". 1766 EL Sibton to London Willcocks 295, xx Rated 'F', xxx Bishop 'A-B'. Taken to Peasenhall for the Saxmundham route. Stamped at Saxmundham, straight line town stamp, London via Ipswich. Inland Bishop Mark 23 DE.

Ipswich - Military - A rare postcard of the Cyclist Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment. The place id the top of Burlington Road and the sign of Daniels the Piano-man on Norwich Road can just been seen. The men are thought to be of the Cyclist Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. In 1906 their uniform was green, the young fellows are thought to be new recruits. The Company was a popular one and in 1909 was a Territorial one known as the Essex and Suffolk Cyclists, with H.Q., at 15 Cornhill Ipswich.
