INDEPENDENCE TO INSPIRE

We are one of the country’s leading independent schools situated in the heart of Oxton village in Wirral. We are a co-educational selective school, offering outstanding educational opportunities for girls and boys from three months to eighteen years.

‘ A happy school, consistently producing confident and considerate individuals, as well as top results’ Good Schools Guide 2017

Welcome to Birkenhead School At the heart of our School is a welcoming community and an enriching education that aspires to academic excellence for all and inspirational teaching, embedding a lifelong love of learning. By knowing each individual, we recognise and celebrate their unique skills and passions, adding value at every stage of their educational journey during their time at School and beyond.

In return, we expect our pupils to be open and resilient to the diversity and demands of modern life, upholding the highest standards of behaviour, attitude and appearance. Birkonians develop a strong moral compass, going on to become leaders in their community and chosen fields and are both interested and interesting, and confident yet not arrogant.

The legacy of an education at the School is about confidence, social awareness, knowledge and understanding that will stay with our pupils for a lifetime and set them apart from their peers.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Birkenhead School, an HMC independent school and Wirral’s only co-educational selective school that welcomes children from Nursery to Sixth Form.

environment where teachers have the freedom to teach and where pupils learn because they are inspired and curious – not merely to achieve good grades. We aim to engender a mindset to learn throughout life.

We are aware of the considerable privilege in shaping the educational journey of your son or daughter through their formative school years. From their first day at school, our focus is to know the individual, to develop their core values and to provide a breadth of academic and wider opportunities so that we can nurture resilient, ambitious and responsible young men and women. At Birkenhead School, we take a rigorous approach to academic study, achieving the highest grades, but firmly believe that the path pupils take and the challenges they overcome are of equal importance. We strive to create a learning

As Headmaster, I take great pride in each pupil feeling known and valued within our community. At Birkenhead School, we add further value at every step of this educational journey, driven by a co-curricular programme whose scope and quality allows each individual to find their niche, whether it lies in academia, sport, music, drama, service or leadership - to name but a few. For staff to be able to further our pupils’ passions, while working within such an inspirational and beautiful school site, is one of the great privileges of teaching at Birkenhead School, and of an independent education.

I hope that this prospectus offers an insight into life at the School and I would encourage you to visit in person to experience firsthand what we offer and to speak with me, my colleagues and most importantly our pupils to fully appreciate what makes Birkenhead School a special community to be part of.

‘ The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is excellent’ ISI Report

The extraordinary talents of pupils at the School are all celebrated and encouraged. 04

Co-education Provides a Balanced Foundation for Life Outside of School We embrace the importance of a co-education that reflects wider society and offers an environment where girls and boys can be themselves, understanding and admiring others for their achievements, irrespective of gender. Both sexes benefit enormously by learning in a mixed environment. Through classroom debate, participation in co-curricular activities and important downtime during the day, girls and boys both learn and importantly fail together, mutually respecting each other’s opinions, interests and resilience.

Together they begin to understand how different people think and act and celebrate that there can be more than one way of approaching life. Our pupils take their places naturally in the wider world with the co-educational setting providing an excellent foundation for the development of meaningful and lasting relationships based on mutual respect and admiration.

‘ The quality of pupils’ achievement and learning is excellent’ ISI Report

Academic Excellence for All Our academic results position us as one of the leading independent schools within the North West and the UK. We strive for academic excellence for all pupils whilst, at the same time, developing independent thinkers who have the skills to solve problems and think laterally. Our smaller class sizes allow each pupil more attention from teachers and more opportunities to take part and express their opinions, both of which are vital in fostering an intellectual and stimulating learning environment. Learning is enhanced by the confidence pupils develop by being able to share opinions and respond to questions in a smaller setting, with lessons tailored to individual interests and progress.

08

Pupils benefit from teachers who are experts within their fields, many of whom bring a wealth of experience from outside of the classroom to truly enrich our pupils’ learning as they work towards GCSEs, IGCSEs, A Levels and the Extended Project Qualification. Our ‘Future Skills’ and ‘Beyond the Curriculum’ programmes across Prep, Seniors and Sixth Form provide a range of additional activities and timetabled lessons to complement and extend learning, as well as stretch both the minds and imaginations of our pupils. Recent options have included Etiquette lessons, Architecture, Classical Greek, Photography, Science in the Community, Global Issues and Writing for Publication. The opportunities our pupils have, set them apart from their peers and add to the breadth of the overall life education offered at the School.

‘ The special thing about the School is it is like a family where everyone looks after you’. Pupil, Pupil Survey 2017

A Unique Community

10

Our unique community offers pupils and families a supportive, happy and caring environment where children become confident and engaging young adults. Parents, children, staff and friends all contribute to the rich and broad education provided, as do our Parents’ Association, extensive alumni network and Old Birkonian Society.

The story of the School community over the years is told through the windows, plaques and memorials, which have been donated by, or in memory of, past pupils and staff. The spiritual development of our pupils is supported through weekly Chapel services with the School Chaplain, as well as in lessons.

The School is underpinned by Christian values and the School Chapel, founded in 1883, is situated centrally on the campus and is a clear and visible reminder of the School’s Christian character.

Children join one of the four Houses, Shrewsbury, Kingsmead, Bidston and Beresford, and these offer pupils camaraderie and opportunities to make friendships

across all years with House competitions spanning the breadth of School life. Life long friendships are also made on the sports field, in clubs and in the Music School, as well as in the classroom and on school trips, with each pupil’s individual personality and character being given plenty of opportunity to shine through.

‘ Relationships between staff and pupil are excellent both in and out of the classroom... founded on mutual respect.’ ISI Report

Knowing Each Child as an Individual Happiness is a top priority and we recognise and appreciate that growing up may come with challenges. By investing in small class sizes and our pastoral network comprising Heads of Year, Pastoral Form Tutors, School Chaplain, School Nurse and Pupil Peer Mentors, we are able to quickly identify if there are concerns, offering exceptional pastoral care and support for our pupils within our close-knit community.

12

We also recognise that education is a team effort between parents, staff and pupils themselves. Communication is therefore key and we firmly believe in the importance of informal discussions, mutual observations and progress, alongside the more formal welcome evenings, parent meetings and school reports. To further support parents at home, our parent seminar programme offers access to leading experts in fields such as digital awareness, e-safety and mental health.

From the classroom, to the sports field, from the music room to trips further afield, we look to offer opportunities that spark passions and interests, broaden outlooks and enrich the lives of all our pupils.

Going Beyond As an independent school we are proud to be able to offer opportunities over and above those that may be available elsewhere. Our ‘Going Beyond’ mindset results in a staff and pupil community who look to go over and above in everything they do. We want our pupils to push boundaries, ask questions, and challenge the status-quo – all essential qualities in today’s society and valuable attributes for the leaders of tomorrow. 14

‘ The contribution of curricular and extra-curricular provision is excellent’. ISI Report

Opportunity and Enrichment The richness and breadth of our co-curricular programme is celebrated and central to the all-round, balanced education provided. With society placing ever-increasing pressure on today’s young people, we educate and look to develop our pupils in the broadest sense. The best learners and contributors to School life, and thus the leaders of tomorrow, are those who have a breadth of knowledge that extends beyond the classroom. We look for opportunities that broaden horizons and develop new skills, taking pupils outside of comfort zones, whilst encouraging team work, resilience and leadership skills.

16

Individual passions are found in areas including sport, music, the arts and academia, and lifelong hobbies and rewarding careers are built on these early experiences. Clubs such as dance, gymnastics, climbing, coding, languages, astronomy, robotics, unicycling, choir and orienteering are just some of the many clubs or activities on offer, ensuring that there is always something to excite and enthuse any pupil, whatever their interests or skills. School alumni and other notable speakers contribute to the richness of the co-curricular activities on offer and visits from renowned authors, musicians, professional sports people and adventurers have all featured in recent school events.

Sport Builds Character and Resilience

‘ The School regularly produces representatives for local, regional and national teams.’ The Good Schools Guide 2017

Sport is a large part of School life, with pupils taking part in a wide and varied Games and PE curriculum and numerous sports clubs both during and after school. Rugby, lacrosse, cricket, netball, tennis, hockey and golf are some of the sports played at the School and pupils’ character and moral principles are formed through fair play and teamwork. Positive selfesteem and physical and mental well-being contribute to overall success both inside and outside of the classroom, and are all developed through the sports experiences on offer. Inclusivity extends to the sports field with pupils offered opportunities to represent the School across the breadth of sports. Weekly fixtures see parents and the School community coming together to support on the touchline. Pupils and alumni have enjoyed local, national and international success, mirrored by members of the sports staff, who share their professional and amateur experiences on the sports field with pupils. Exceptional sports performances are recognised through School Colours at our annual Sports Awards Evening.

Annual sports tours take the name of Birkenhead School to distant shores including Namibia, South Africa, Barbados, Antigua and South America.

‘The School has a lively and thriving music department, and with such a wide range of bands, choirs and orchestras, all abilities are covered’ The Good Schools Guide, 2017

Chapel Choir

Where Words Leave Off, Music Begins Our strong musical tradition places music at the heart of the School. From the very youngest pupils and throughout the School, music and the creative arts offer a unique means of expression, capturing passions and emotions and allowing pupils to explore new ideas, subject matter and cultures.

Prep Orchestra, Prep Choir and Little School Choir offer our youngest pupils the opportunities to perform. As they progress, Seniors offers an array of musical ensembles that pupils can join, including Senior Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band, and our award-winning Brass Ensemble.

Performing, listening, composing and discussion take place in class music lessons, with pupils being encouraged to further their enjoyment and performance skills by taking part in cocurricular musical activities, school productions and concerts.

Music specialists, within both Prep and Seniors, offer an outstanding and enriching musical education for pupils at the School and the department has strong links with the Liverpool Philharmonic and Liverpool Hope University. Pupils regularly represent the School at regional and national level, with some of our most talented pupils gaining places in the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, National Children’s Orchestra, National Youth Choir, and National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Learning a musical instrument is encouraged from an early age in the Music School and individual weekly tuition in a wide range of instruments, as well as singing, is available.

24

Our Chapel Choir is perhaps unique amongst independent day schools with choristers performing what is essentially a cathedral repertoire, offering an enriching and uplifting experience in which pupils from Prep to Sixth Form work together as musical equals. The Choir sings in the School Chapel, during weekly Chapel services and at Sunday Evensong. Outside School, the Choir sings Evensong at local cathedrals, and will regularly undertake summer ‘cathedral weeks’, where the choristers sing the daily offices in the cathedral or Minster. These trips alternate with foreign music tours which involve both instrumentalists and singers performing at a wide range of venues, with recent destinations including Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

26

The annual Prep and Senior School productions are highlights in the School calendar and drama clubs for different ages are part of the overall co-curricular offering. A UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY From 3 months to 18 years, children progress their education within a supportive and caring environment. Knowledge, understanding and self-confidence are gifts that can remain with us for the whole of our lives. To develop these you need time, which is why an education at the School spans the whole of a child’s educational journey through to Sixth Form. This provides for a coherent, all-through education with each year building on the last, maintaining not only the quality but also the energy and excitement of intellectual discovery. Children move seamlessly from one year to the next, moving onto the next stage of their journey with confidence and excitement and with no loss of momentum or passion.

28

Each stage of the journey is in a new area of the School, offering a different environment and new learning experiences whilst in familiar settings. Whether joining at Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep, Seniors or Sixth Form, children are quickly welcomed and settle in the close-knit settings and School community. Small class sizes and a wide range of co-curricular activities allow friendships to be quickly made, both inside and outside of the classroom.

NURSERY

The Small Setting with a Big Heart

The Nursery is where our youngest children, from three months to three years, begin their journey of discovery and build the foundations for a lifelong adventure of learning. The caring environment and small setting is where children develop in confidence, beginning to learn new skills and making friends with other children. Outside play is encouraged, whether it be on the outside terrace, in the mud kitchen, planting seeds, or in the School’s Outdoor Classroom, opening eyes to a world of possibilities and developing an appreciation of the great outdoors.

30

Walks within the School grounds and listening to stories in the library also add wider experiences to the learning journey of our little ones. The move to Pre-Prep is a natural step for children the term after their third birthday and play dates and games and activities all support the move so that children are happy, confident and ready for their next adventure.

PREP

The Start of their Academic Journey

In today’s rapidly changing and demanding world, it is important that children from an early age have the breadth of opportunity to develop their abilities, discover passions and fulfil their potential whilst enjoying the benefit of a caring, structured and secure environment. Small class sizes allow us to nurture and support children, recognising, encouraging and embracing their personal talents, strengths and passions. We look to develop inquisitive thinkers, nurturing children’s natural curiosity about the world around them; unlocking their creative potential and engendering a lifelong love of learning. Key skills are introduced step by step, be this in reading, writing, maths, the arts or sport, to provide stretch and challenge. As pupils grow and develop they are taught by subject specialists in areas such as art, design and technology, music, modern foreign languages and physical education. Reading buddy schemes also offer peer mentoring opportunities for our older pupils and foster a love of reading in younger pupils.

The Wessex Wing, which is home to our older pupils in Prep, has its own designated playground that has been beautifully landscaped to provide zones for both energetic games and quieter, more reflective time. Our Prep pupils benefit enormously from plenty of time outdoors. As well as having extensive inspirational play areas, they have the use of an outdoor classroom as a base for nature activities, outdoor practical activities and wildlife investigations. The pathway to Seniors is seamless with pupils taking part in a range of lessons, activities and events in Seniors during their time in Prep. The transition to Seniors ensures that there is no loss in quality or momentum of the educational experience as they move on, confident and excited with friends, and familiar with staff and the curriculum.

Little School and Old School House, with their own playground area and assembly hall, allow our younger pupils from Reception to Year 2 to quickly feel at home in a close-knit setting.

SENIORS We offer an education that sets our pupils apart and it is here within Seniors that our pupils develop into responsible, conscientious and confident young adults.

‘ I joined in Year 7. I have had the journey of a lifetime so far and learning in a school with such a different environment has been amazing. ’

Overdale, home to our Year 7 and 8 pupils, provides a school within a school setting, and children from Prep and those joining the School quickly feel comfortable as they make the transition. Friendly peer support is on offer from Sixth Form students, who meet and mentor pupils as they start life in Seniors. Our pupils achieve excellent examination results but it is their intellectual curiosity, which we carefully nurture, that holds the key to their success. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum and in Years 8, 9 and 10 pupils can tailor their studies, alongside core subjects, according to their individual strengths and future career plans. Pupils start work towards GCSEs and IGCSEs in selected subjects from Year 9. Our Beyond the Curriculum programme within Seniors develops life skills and gives advice in areas such as careers, etiquette and public speaking so that pupils can make informed choices and take their place in today’s world.

Small class sizes continue to allow high levels of support and attention, ensuring that no question goes unanswered, with opinions listened to and respected by teachers and friends. Intellectual risk is encouraged by both pupils and staff, who stretch and challenge to provide valuable learning experiences for the most able. Pupils regularly represent the School in local, regional and national competitions and awards programmes which, in turn, provide valuable experiences as well as setting them apart from their contemporaries in the future. As part of a holistic education, all pupils participate in sports, music and the arts. Talents in these areas are nurtured and encouraged and pupils from the School have represented the various disciplines at local, regional and national levels.
