How to Hold the Native American Flute
•
Place the index, middle, and ring finger of your left hand over the top three holes. Keep your left thumb against the back of the flute.

Place the index, middle, and ring finger of your right hand over the lower three holes. Keep your right thumb against the back of the flute, just as you are doing with your left hand. Note: It is ok to squeeze the flute slightly, in order to get a feel for the flute. Over time you will become accustomed to this holding technique, and not need to squeeze the flute as much as you do in the beginning. Do not use the tips of your fingers to cover the holes, but rather the softer “fingerprint” area of your fingers, since the tuning holes will need to be completely covered, not allowing air to escape. A common mistake is for the lower edge of the holes to be uncovered, which will result in a squeaking sound to occur. Again, with practice, your fingers will become used to how the holes feel.
