Network of Desire Dissecting real estate listings to determine the object of sale begins to describe the commodified home. Advertisements typically capitalize on spatial qualities or appliances — rarely both. Studying the adjectives used in a listing reveals generalized notions about contemporary architecture that are being pushed on the consumer: convenience, pleasure and hierarchy.

thesis [in progress]

Spatial Entanglement To perceive Object is to be oriented with-out the target of perception. To perceive Architecture is to be oriented with-in the target of perception. The distinction between with-in and without is frequently subverted in spaces. The readjustment of focus that occurs in these moments allows a collection of objects and architecture to simultaneously foreground and background one another.

Orientation/Accumulation Considering the collection as an archaeologically relevant cosmology of identity and the consumer as an unintentional collector, a home is designed that spatially participates in collecting activities. Through spaces which place the inhabitant with-in and with-out the architecture, the consumer is allowed to dwell within their architecture and personal collection simultaneously.

Dwelling for a Collector Designing elements relationally through oblique projections while simultaneously investigating space through perspective constructions enabled the architecture to be designed from with-in and with-out.

Working Model #2 To develop and verify spatial relationships between elements a physical model was built in tandem with constructed drawings, each influencing the progress of the other.

Adaptive Reuse Minimal insertions into an historic vaudeville theater building in Uptown, Chicago turn the former bank into a flexible commercial and community space. In the atrium a new balcony spans the two stair towers, which are modified to house both retail space and circulation. Additionally, the boarded proscenium is reopened to reveal the back-of-house and a cylindrical skylight penetrates the decorative barrel vault to bring in natural light. The floor of the atrium is occupied by three constructs that function as sculptural seating or flexible commercial space. The ornamented atrium functions as a stage for the constructs, their orientation creating a unique, inhabitable set piece. Openings determined by the pilaster grid puncture the East facade, emphasizing interior order while playfully bringing the garden into the atrium.

The site is a short walk from multiple residential streets and one block from a large ‘El’ station, enabling the site to serve the neighborhood and Chicago. The basement vault is transformed into a bar and restaurant to provide evening activity. The back-of-house is occupied by a coffee roaster that serves coffee through the old proscenium. The trompe l’oeil mural covering the East facade functions as the interface between interior and exterior space. Existing elements of the mural dictate openings into the interior space and extrusions into the public plaza as seen in the covered garden masquerading as an elevator enclosure angularly terminating to preserve the proper viewing angle for the mural. A planted hill provides a comfortable perch from which to watch activity in the plaza, echoing the interior balcony.

Off the Beaten Path Just off N Broadway St, Charlie Chaplin’s former studio is tucked into a residential neighborhood. The unassuming warehouse has been stripped of original ornamentation and is currently a culinary institute. The former Studio A warehouse is planned to be converted into a silent film museum with studio space for local filmmakers.

W Argyle St

N Broadway St

Interior Insertions The walls and column grid of the warehouse were constructed slightly skewed to prevent reverberation. This peculiarity was incorporated into the spatial organization of the exhibition. Four concrete amphitheaters penetrate the lofted floor to provide screening space for silent films while partitioning the room into a gallery. Each amphitheater functions as an entrance into the basement, which houses the film vault. Adjacent to the exhibition space shelving and benches are arrayed to house educational materials and provide an informal learning space. Studio A is left in its existing condition with catwalks and infinity wall to be utilized as a studio.

Situation The fictionally abandoned Hobet 45 mine is located fifteen minutes from Madison, West Virginia and adjacent to the Big Ugly nature reserve. The site fell victim to mountain top removal mining, which deforested and destabilized the land. The complete site is eight square miles, of which the architecture occupies a small portion of the South-East corner.

Proposal Regeneration of destroyed landscapes is an arduous process that can take decades. As mountain top removal mines are shut down it will become necessary to formulate an effective plan to reforest these sites, aiding the removal of chemicals from the soil and providing an habitat for the natural flora and fauna of the Appalachian region. Establishing a town on the former site of a deserted mine creates a place to study and research new methods of landscape restoration.

1/8

Institution The proposed structure is an experimental settlement dedicated to cultural and ecological rejuvenation and preservation. The constructed cityscape houses laboratories to research landscape restoration and workshops dedicated to traditional craft. Residents are trusted with portions of destroyed land to tend high-density farms, beginning the decades long process of replanting the region.

Fabricated Landscape The elevated concrete ring and trestle bridges composing the structure incorporate common infrastructural archetypes into an alien situation. Besides providing lab space and mechanical room, the ring provides a verdant horizon and porous wall, making the barren site more intimate. The semicircular plazas that intersect the ring are joined with trestle bridges, occupied with low-density urban blocks.

Nature and the City Situated between downtown Blacksburg and Virginia Polytechnic Institute the structure is forced to mediate multiple scales of building and the border between the academic institution and town. The truss assembly addresses multistory buildings across the street, while an arcade with pockets of seating address the pedestrian scale. The residences, commercial space and a gallery surround a forested garden that fades into the town. Residences are suspended in trusses above the canopy, providing immediate views of the garden and

distant views of the Appalachian Mountains. In the garden, skylights allow brief glimpses into the gallery. Approaching the site from Main Street, the university campus is viewed through the garden, while approaching the site from the university, the commercial space and industrial trusses frame downtown.

Approach The structure is anonymously situated a distance from a trail into the Appalachian Mountains. Without explicit access, the structure is found by wandering off the marked path. The procession to the cantilevered box is choreographed through a massive concrete shell and suspended stairs, intermittently obscuring and revealing views of the forest and mountains along the path.

Cabin Floating at the end of the steel truss is a timber box, terminated with a frosted glass window. The louvered doors allow the forest to be sensed while inhabiting the box, at the same time blocking the view through the monolith. Rods supporting the staircase disturb resting water in the basin, reflecting ribbons of light and shadow onto the canted window.

de-Composition Remembered fragments of the Appalachian landscape are collaged together and set into the earth on a foundation reminiscent of temple steps. As the architecture decays it becomes another chance encounter with a ruin hidden by vegetation.

Presence & Absence The architecture plays with presence and absence of the archetypical Seaside house. The extruded houseicon form pivots on the crest of the dune, dividing the form in two. The pavilion located at the meeting of the two sides emphasizes functions as a visual fulcrum, calling attention through the removal of canopy. When resting in the pavilion and looking toward the beach, the canopy traces a house-icon that appears to sit on the horizon, framing the sky and the ocean.

Temporarily Permanent In the event of Cape Hatteras residents being displaced from their homes, prefabricated emergency housing is brought in on semitrailers and hoisted onto wooden pylons to create a honeycombed megastructure. Each unit has an accessible roof and exterior stair that joins adjacent units to one another — each additional unit organically joins this network of shared patios and intimate porches. After the units are deserted, the system functions as a colony of short stay beachfront cabins.

Deployment Researchers on Rubondo Island require seasonal housing for field research. Shipping and labor constraints demand that the structure be lightweight, easily assembled, and fit within an ISO container. The facility will be used as a laboratory and residence for researchers as well as an educational facility for small groups. The structure will be relocated seasonally and with each relocation adapt to an expanded or shrunk program.

Module The structural unit is an aluminum frame laced with tension cables to prevent racking. Connection points milled on the frame allow the module to be used at any point in the structure. Fifteen frames can be stacked to create an aluminum box and filled with additional materials or tools for efficient shipping. A single package of frames can be assembled into a basic living unit.

Think Tight! Kleiner Grasbrook is an industrial island on the Elbe in Hamburg, Germany. As Kleiner Grasbrook deindustrializes, a comprehensive urban plan is required to transform the island into a link connecting Northern and Southern Hamburg. Instead of top down planning, an architecturallegislative framework is put in place. The plan controls the rate of growth, embraces temporary construction instead of permanent construction and requires artist residency to be built. As a densely creative culture develops and gentrification begins, the framework insures that the island retains its rich public spaces and remains affordable for the artistic pioneers.

Temporal Modeling To understand the shape of development on Kleiner Grasbrook a series of plates were produced showing planned development every 5 years. Loading the plates into a light box, densities of construction over time could be found. Digitally collaging the plates demonstrates the fully populated island.

Stop Motion Film Frames A rig was produced to mount a digital camera to shoot a stop motion film utilizing the plates produced for the previous model. The film presents urban development on Kleiner Grasbrook as a linear process instead of a sculptural form. Colored tape indicates infrastructure, colored clay distinguishes typologies and transparent overlays represents social events.

Sculptural Installation The project is an extension of an existing salon designed by raumspielkunst, adding additional cutting stations. The burst of assembled members utilizes the light fixture design of Beblond — structural C-channels retrofitted with halogen lamps. The installation is distinguished from the original interior through formal irregularity and contrasting color. When not being used as a cutting station the mirrors reflect activity in the salon, animating the assembly.

Initial Proposal

Theatrical Modeling A negative of the desired shape was created to navigate the spatial constraints of the salon and fabricate the assembly of exploded elements. The installation was placed in a model of the salon interior and photographed to render the final proposal for the client.

Formal Iteration The building code demanded the extension have a very small footprint, so numerous iterations were modeled to determine an effective form within the envelope. Maintaining spatial variation of the narrow space was important during the iterative process to achieve an interesting environment.

Spatial Engagement When possible, the architecture building was integrated into the design of posters. For The Thin Green Line, painter’s tape was used to connect the official lecture schedule to the lecturing professors studio. The Majesty of Peru poster occupied typically unoccupied corners of the building. Experiences protruded from the plane of the wall, with no graphic content. Peering through a cut hole, a series of scenes related to the lecture could be seen.
