Dr. Kenneth Evans President

Second Season

Veteran educator Kenneth Evans took office July 1, 2013 as Lamar University’s 15th president bringing extensive experience in higher education administration to the position. Evans holds bachelor’s degrees in English and political science from the University of California, Davis, a master’s in business administration from California State University, Sacramento, and a Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Colorado. He has conducted extensive research and authored more than 70 journal articles on interpersonal influence, sales management, services marketing, and marketing management and theory. Evans’ teaching and research is extensive, but it is his leadership experience that provides a special fit with his role as

president. Evans served as dean of the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma since 2007 and held the Fred E. Brown chair. He previously served as associate dean of graduate studies, assistant dean of undergraduate studies and chair of the marketing department at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked in a variety of research, teaching and administration positions at Arizona State University, the University of Colorado and California State University, Sacramento. Prior to his academic career, Evans worked as a consultant and marketing representative at several northern California companies. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Evans grew up in Chicago where he attended public schools through the fifth grade, when the family moved to California. He was the first in his immediate family to earn a college degree. Evans played basketball, golf and football at different points in high school and college and ran daily as part of an active lifestyle. Ken and Nancy met while freshmen at University of California, Davis, and married after graduation. A career elementary school teacher, Nancy retired when the couple moved to Norman, Okla. The couple has two adult sons.

Jason Henderson, who spent a year as interim athletics director, was named Lamar’s Director of Athletics on June 18, 2012. Henderson had served as Lamar’s associate athletics director for compliance since July of 2007 before being elevated to interim athletics director on May 11, 2011. As the athletics director, Henderson is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Lamar’s 17 men’s and women’s athletics programs. Henderson is in his seventh year as a member of the Lamar athletics department overall, joining the staff in April 2006 as the compliance coordinator. In this role, Henderson oversees NCAA compliance and scholarships. Henderson currently serves as the Southland Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet. The cabinet reviews issues relating to NCAA rules involving student-athlete amateurism and ways to ensure that student-athletes remain true to the NCAA philosophy of amateur athletic competitions. While serving as associate AD, Henderson played a major role in the return of Lamar football and the addition of the women’s soccer and softball programs. He was a key figure in the planning of the Dauphin Athletic Complex, the updating of what is now known as Provost Umphrey Stadium and the construction of the

Lamar Soccer/Softball Complex. Henderson has also led coaching search committees that landed Lamar a successful football coach in Ray Woodard and proven basketball coach Tic Price. In addition, the department has added several staff positions under his watch. Prior to coming to Lamar, Henderson served as the academic coordinator and CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator at Texas A&M-Kingsville, where he collected and maintained data on student-athletes, assisted with updating and maintaining compliance documents and assisted with rules education for department staff and student-athletes. Henderson was also an intern at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky., and Texas A&M. During this time Henderson was involved primarily in assisting in the marketing of the NAIA and NCAA programs, respectively. Henderson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with a specialization in sports management from Texas A&M in May 2003 and a Master

of Business Administration from Texas A&M-Kingsville in December 2005. Henderson also spends time in the community with various charitable organizations including the YMBL and the Beaumont A&M Club. Both of these organizations help raise funds to improve the community at large.

Brian White Head Coach 16th Season

In his eight seasons as the Lamar University men’s head golf coach, and 16 seasons as the Lady Cardinals’ head coach, Brian White has taken the Cardinals to unprecedented heights on a conference, regional and national level. Since taking over the program he has guided Lamar to nine Southland Conference Championships - including five on the women’s side, seven NCAA regional appearances and two men’s NCAA Championships appearances - including two top-25 finishes and a No. 3 national ranking in 2007. During that stretch the LU men have sent at least one athlete to the NCAA regional championships in six of the past eight seasons, and have recorded three top-10 team

finishes at the regional championships. A six-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, White’s athletes have reaped the benefits of his guidance. White has coached 46 All-Southland Conference selections - including 17 first-team selections, 12 Academic All-SLC selections, three conference players of the year, three league student-athletes of the year, two Ping All-Americans - including firstteam selection Dawie Van Der Walt in 2007 and three SLC Freshmen of the Year. While these accomplishments are impressive, White has proven during his time at Lamar that the golf program is capable of even more. Simply put, no athletics program at Lamar has enjoyed more success than the golf teams. White guided the Cardinals to a third place tie at the 2007 NCAA Championships, the highest finish in school history. One season earlier, Lamar’s men tied for ninth place at the national tournament with former star Dawie Van Der Walt placing fourth as an individual. The 2012-13 season was no different for Lamar’s men and women. The Lady Cardinals rallied from a four-stroke deficit on the final day of the conference championships to win the title. It was the first conference title since 2006 for the Lamar women, and the fourth overall. Along the way, the Lady Cardinals won four tournaments, received three all-conference selections, including first-team honorees Julie Aime and Nghi Ngo. The women’s team advanced to the NCAA regional championships where they posted a 21st-place finish. Aime and Ngo closed out the season by earning Academic All-SLC honors. The Lamar men added a third-place finish at the 2013 Southland Championships, and had three players named to the all-conference team. Stephane Dubois and Erik Knudsen earned second-team honors, while Gregory Wiggins was a third-team selection. Dubois and Knudsen closed out the year being named Academic All-SLC. White joined the Lamar coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 1999-00 season. During that time he has seen a combined total of 79 combined tournament wins (40 men’s and 39 women’s

titles) - among those victories are 13 SLC titles (eight men’s and five women’s titles). He has helped coach 84 all-conference selections (52 men’s and 32 women’s). Four Cardinals have earned PING All-America honors during White’s tenure, with the group earning the recognition seven times combined. Between the two programs, White has coached nine SLC Players of the Year, three newcomers of the year and 10 freshmen of the year. Current PGA Tour player Chris Stroud, a first-team PING All-America in 2004, continues to be coached by White, as do professional players Van Der Walt, Casey Clendenon and Oliver Bekker. Stroud tied for third at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., the highest individual finish at the national tournament in LU history. Bekker made his PGA Tour debut in 2012 by winning on the Sunshine Tour and earning a spot in the prestigious Bridgestone Invitational. Van Der Walt fired a 60 in a Web.Com Tour competition during the 2012 season and former LU golfer Shawn Stefani (2001-05) won the 2012 Midwest Classic on the Web.Com Tour. Stefani, Stroud and Van Der Walt provided Lamar with a strong presence at the 2014 British Open. All three qualified for the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, with White on hand for the tournament. Prior to the British Open, Stroud was inducted into the Southland Hall of Honor, becoming the first golfer recognized by the league. Stroud (2001-04) is the only four-time all-conference performer in SLC history on the men’s side, while Lady Cardinal standout Therese Nilsson (2006-09), who was twice named SLC Player of the Year, is the only fourtime all-conference performer in league history on the women’s side. A 2007 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year, White’s influence on golf has stretched far beyond the national level. White served as the U.S. National coach at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Japan. A native of Beaumont, White was a standout at Kelly High School and played professionally from 1991-96 after finishing his golfing career at Lamar. White, who also serves as the Director of Golf at the Beaumont Country Club, earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in economics from Lamar in 1989.

LAMAR CARDS GOLF Russell Helson is in his third season as an assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at Lamar. Helson, who played at Lamar from 2003-08, spent the previous three years as a professional caddy. “I’m thrilled to have a former Lamar player come back to help the program,” said head coach Brian White. “Russell brings so much experience on the professional level and that will help him be a great teacher and coach on the college level.” Helson helped coach the Lamar Lady Cardinals to one of the best seasons in program history in 2012-13. The Lady Cards rallied from four strokes down on the final day to capture the Southland Conference title with a seven-stroke victory. Lamar finished the season by advancing to the NCAA Regional Championships. During Helson’s playing career at Lamar, the Cardinals won three straight Southland Conference titles and advanced to a NCAA Regional each of his four years. A native of Georgetown, Texas, Helson earned third-team All-Southland Conference honors as a senior after tying for fourth at the Southland tournament. Helson also represented Lamar at the 2008 NCAA Central

LAMAR CARDS GOLF The Lamar men’s golf program started when the university achieved senior college status for the 1951-52 season. Over the past five decades, the Cardinals have won seven National Championships, 34 conference titles and sent several players to the PGA Tour. Dr. Lewis Hilley, who would also serve as Lamar’s athletic director from 1955-62, was the first men’s golf coach at Lamar. He guided the Cardinals to 10 Lone Star Conference Championships from 1953-63. The Cardinals really burst onto the national scene in 1956 by winning the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship. That started a string of five NAIA titles in six years from 1956 to 1961. Fred “Butch” Baird was the first Lamar golfer to make a name for himself on the PGA Tour. He was part of four Lone Star championship teams and won individual medalist honors in 1955. He was a successful member of the PGA Tour for a number of years and the Senior PGA Tour. A change to the Southland Conference for the 1964 season didn’t alter the success of the program as the Cardinals proceeded to win 10-straight conference titles from 1964-73. LAMAR CARDS GOLF Lamar women’s golf is rich in tradition and prestige due to several prominent players in the professional golfing ranks. The first star, Clifford Ann Creed, pioneered women’s golf at Lamar and went on to receive her LPGA card in 1962. On January, 26, 1991, Creed was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor. She was made a member of the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame two years prior and is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Creed won 11 professional events and was fourth on the LPGA money list in 1962. She was the Western Open Champion, a six-time winner of the Louisiana State Open and a member of the Curtis Cup team. Dawn Coe-Jones, a 1983 All-American for Lamar, won her third career LPGA event in 1995 en route to finishing among the top 25 money winners for the seventh-straight year. Coe-Jones was also elected to the Cardinal Hall of Honor in October 1995. She is a 1997 inductee in the National Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Hall of Fame. Two other former Lady Cardinals who enjoyed professional careers are Jennifer Wyatt and Gail Anderson Graham. Wyatt won an LPGA event in 1992 and Graham collected her first victory in 1995 at the Fieldcrest Canon Classic. Graham was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor on Feb. 25, 2000. Other Lamar golfers who have played professionally include Lori Brock, Patty Grant, Lynn Cooke Parker and Dawn Kortage. Coe-Jones led Lamar to the 1983 NCAA Championships where the Lady Cardinals finished seventh as a team. Coe-Jones finished 11th individually, the highest finisher ever for a Lady Cardinal golfer. After sending individuals to the NCAA Championships in 1984 (Lori Brock - 94th place), 1987 (Jennifer Wyatt - T41) and 1989 (Elsabe Hefer - T75), Lamar again competed as a team in 1991. Pat Park, who was instrumental in the building of the Lamar golf program, was named the 1991 National Coach of the Year and West Region Coach of the Year. Lamar once again made a solid showing as it took eighth place. Katharina Larsson (T21) and Louisa Bergsma (T26) both posted top 30 finishes for the Lady Cardinals. Bergsma returned to the NCAA Championships in 1992 as an individual and tied for 37th. Bergsma now serves as the Director of Operations for the Southern Texas PGA, which is located at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas. She was part of the 2006 Cardinal Hall of Honor Induction class. For the first time in 1993, Lamar was able to compete for a conference championship as the Sun Belt Conference sponsored women’s golf. Lamar dominated the tournament in 1993, winning the team title by 29 strokes behind a medalist performance from Bergsma. Lamar was awarded a trip to the 1993 NCAA Regionals and placed 18th as a team. Bergsma was Lamar’s top finisher, tying for 51st place. In 1994, Lamar was even more impressive at the SBC Tournament, winning by 40 shots. Bresha Marshall took home the individual title on her way to being named All-SBC. She was joined on the all-conference team by Andrea Dobson,

Melissa Isham and Karen Saevarsdottir. Laura Myers also picked up SBC Coach of the Year honors. Dobson and Saevarsdottir each played in the 1994 NCAA Regionals, with Dobson finishing 12th and moving on to the NCAA Championships where she tied for 91st. Lamar made it three Sun Belt titles in a row in 1995 with a 25-stroke victory. Dobson took home individual medalist honors for Lamar, and was named All-SBC for the third-straight year. Shirin Hornecker and Marshall were also named to the all-conference squad. The Lady Cardinals would win their final SBC title in 1996 as Hornecker won individual medalist honors. Hornecker, Saevarsdottir and Lotte Moeller were named All-SBC, and Myers picked up her second Coach of the Year honor. After leaving the Sun Belt and joining the Southland Conference, Lamar competed for a team title in 2002. While the Lady Cardinals did not win the championship that first year, Catrin Joyce (1st Team), Casey Cain (2nd Team) and Helen Kunick (2nd Team) were all recognized by the league’s coaches. Lamar did pick up a team title in 2003 as Brad McMakin was named SLC Coach of the Year and Cain was named first-team All-SLC. SLC Freshman of the Year Hillary Zeigler won individual medalist honors at the 2005 conference tournament as Lamar won its second Southland title. Brian White was named the SLC Coach of the Year, and Cain was named first-team all-conference for the third straight season. Lamar would defend its crown in 2006 as yet another freshman would win individual medalist honors at the SLC Championships. This time it was Therese Nilsson who would pick up the victory for Lamar on her way to being named freshman of the year and first-team all-conference. Nilsson would complete her four-year career in 2009 as the only Southland Conference player to be named first-team all-conference four times. Senior Stine Pedersen became the third Lady Cardinal to win individual medalist honors at the Southland Conference Championships as she won a sudden-death playoff on the third hole in 2011. Lamar placed second at the tournament, with Pedersen being named first-team all-conference and Julie Aime taking home second-team honors. Aime became a three-time All-SLC selection as she guided Lamar back to a Southland Conference title in 2013. The Lady Cardinals entered the final round of the championships down four strokes but battled back to take the title behind the play of Aime, and fellow first-team all-conference selection Nghi Ngo. Lamar advanced to the NCAA Central Regional where they recorded a 22nd-place finish. The Lady Cards would witness a repeat performance in 2014 behind SLC Freshman of the year Wenny Chang. That year, Lamar won the conference title, earning the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Championships, as Chang and junior Taylor Stockton garnered first-team all-conference honors.
