TIC PRICE HEAD COACH First Season

LAMAR CARDS BASKETBALL Tic Price was named interim head coach of the Lamar men’s basketball team Feb. 16, 2014. Ten days after the conclusion of the 2013-14 season the interim tag was removed from his title and Price became the full time head coach of the Cardinals. A former NCAA Division I head coach with 32 years coaching experience, including three as an assistant at Lamar, Price becomes the 11th head coach of a Lamar program that has won only seven games in the past two seasons. Among his 32 seasons working at the collegiate level, Price has helped coach 12 different squads to the NCAA or NIT as either an assistant or head coach. His head coaching career began in 1994 at the University of New Orleans, and includes stints at Memphis and McNeese State. During his time at UNO, the Privateers won 20 games each season, and advanced to the 1996 NCAA Championships and the 1997 NIT. Price set the Sun Belt Conference career record for winning percentage in conference games, while his teams set new league records for three-pointers in consecutive seasons. UNO’s teams were also known for their strong defense, leading the SBC in field goal percent defense all three seasons.

Additionally, he has mentored more than a dozen players who went on to successful professional careers with both the NBA and USA Basketball, including Earl Barron, Chauncey Billups, Keith Brooks, Earl Boykin, Bimbo Coles, Austin Croshere, Andre Miller, Brad Miller, Brevin Knight, Welsey Person, Paul Pierce and Gerald Wilkins. Price’s coaching career began in 1980 as an assistant at Roanoke College. Following his four seasons at Roanoke, Price took an assistant position at Tennessee-Chattanooga before taking a similar position at Virginia Tech. Price has also made coaching stops at Old Dominion and Auburn. A native of Danville, Va., Price played collegiately at Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Virginia Tech in 1979. He is married to the former Jamie Lynn Simms, and the couple has two children - son, Ryan, who played for his father at McNeese State and is currently an assistant coach at Prairie View A&M, and daughter, Chanel.

Following his time in New Orleans, Price was hired as the head coach at Memphis where he spent two seasons as the Tigers head coach. Price posted a 30-27 (.526) record at Memphis, leading the team to the second round of the 1998 NIT. Price has a full understanding of the Southland, after spending six seasons, including five as head coach, at McNeese State. He was named associate head coach prior to the 2000-01 season where he helped the Cowboys produce the nation’s largest turnaround going 22-9 (.710), winning a conference title and advancing to the NIT. The following season, Price was named head coach where he led the Cowboys to a 20-win season, an SLC regular-season title and a berth in the 2002 NCAA Championships. The Cowboys won 74 games during Price’s five seasons in Lake Charles, La. During his time as head coach, Price has won 10 different coaching honors including Southland Conference Coach of the Year, Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Louisiana Sports Writers Association Collegiate Coach of the Year and NABC District 8 Coach of the Year.

ANTHONY ANDERSON ASSISTANT COACH First Season

Anthony Anderson enters his first season as an assistant with the Lamar men’s basketball program. Anderson returns to the collegiate ranks after spending the previous two seasons at the high school level where he served as assistant coach at St. Paul (La.) High School and head coach of the Louisiana Bluechips and Lady Bluechips AAU squad.

Anderson brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience with him to Beaumont, including 15 at the NCAA Division I level. His collegiate stops have given him a strong understanding of the Lone Star State with positions at TCU, SMU and Texas-Arlington. Anderson also comes to Lamar with an understanding of the Southland Conference serving as a graduate assistant coach at McNeese State in the mid 90s, as well as a fulltime assistant with the Cowboys from during the 1996-97 season.

Anderson’s recruits have also proven themselves to be true student-athletes, succeeding in the classroom as well as on the court. During his time at SMU, the men’s basketball program recorded an 89 percent graduation success rate, which ranked second among all Conference USA schools, and finished among the nation’s top 10 percent for NCAA basketball teams.

In addition to his time within the state of Texas, Anderson has also made coaching stops at Florida International, Miami, New Orleans and Tulane. Anderson has made a career out of improving the talent level when he joins a coaching staff. He has served as recruiting coordinator on six different coaching staffs, and has helped secure some of the nation’s top talent. While serving as the associate head coach to NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas at FIU, Anderson helped sign the nation’s 30th-ranked class according to Hoop Scoop Inc. Anderson found similar success with the Hurricanes in Miami. His 2003 signing class received top-10 rec-

Those signing classes went far beyond “potential” as several players continued their playing careers at the next level. Anderson has coached five different players who have either been drafted or picked up via free agency with NBA franchises.

In addition to his experience as an assistant coach, Anderson also brings two-years experience as a head coach from NAIA Dillard University in New Orleans. Anderson was at Dillard from 2006-08 before leaving to take an assistant position at TCU. \Anderson played basketball at McNeese State for two seasons, after transferring from Lakes Community College. He received his bachelor’s degree from McNeese State in 1995. Anderson, and his wife Kimmy, have three sons - Anthony, Antwann and Andre.

BOBBY KUMMER ASSISTANT COACH First Season

Bobby Kummer brings 18 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience with him as he enters his first season as an assistant with Lamar. Kummer comes to Beaumont after spending the previous four seasons in Boone, N.C., as an assistant with Appalachian State, including the last three as associate head coach. Known as a tireless worker on the court and recruiting trail, Kummer has left a paper trail of success in his wake. During his career, Kummer has helped coach 14 all-conference selections, including three all-freshman team picks, two conference players of the year, two defensive players of the year, two freshmen of the year and a newcomer of the year. He was instrumental in signing five top-20 recruiting classes of which 37 players have gone on to sign professional contracts, including six who played in the NBA. Kummer’s work on the recruiting trail hasn’t just produced individual honors. He has worked with five teams that have advanced to the postseason, including three trips to the NCAA Championships. Kummer’s coaching career began in 1996 at his alma mater where he was hired by former UNC-Charlotte standout, Melvin Watkins. During a two-year stretch, the 49ers brought in a top-10 recruiting class (Bob Gibbons All-Start Sports) and made two NCAA Championship appearances. Following the 1997-98 season, Kummer left Charlotte for College Station when Watkins was named Texas A&M head coach.

During his time with the Aggies, Kummer was able to keep some of the Lone Star State’s best talent within its borders. The Aggies’ 1999 and 2000 signing classes were ranked in the top 20 by various publications, and produced the eventual Big 12 Freshman of the Year (Bemard King) and Newcomer of the Year. King would close out his Aggie career as the school’s all-time leading scorer just shy of 2,000 points. The staff would produce a second freshman of the year in 2003 in Antoine Wright. Following the 2003-04 season, Kummer returned to his alma mater where he spent the next six seasons. Kummer’s second coaching stop in Charlotte would be one of the more successful runs in school history. During that time, Charlotte made three postseason appearances, including the 2005 NCAA Championships as a seven seed, had 10 all-conference selections, including a Conference USA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, a John Wooden Award finalist (Curtis Withers) and had 17 players who went on to sign professional contracts. A two-time team captain during his playing career, Kummer guided the 49ers to a 1995 Metro Conference title, and a trip to the 1995 NCAA Championships. Kummer received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Charlotte in 1996. He is married to the former Nicole David.

BRIAN BURTON ASSISTANT COACH First Season

Brian Burton joined the Lamar coaching staff in June, after spending the previous three seasons at Abilene Christian University. Burton brings nearly 10 years of coaching experience to Beaumont, which includes a successful stint in the junior college ranks and one season at Utah.

College before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah. Burton left a paper trail of success during his times in the juco ranks. During those five seasons, his schools accumulated more than 100 wins (.761 winning percentage), three national rankings, including two in the top 10, and two conference championships.

For the previous two seasons Burton was the lead assistant at ACU under head coach Joe Golding. During that time, Burton helped oversee the program’s transition from the NCAA Division II level to Division I status. Burton helped produce one the program’s best seasons in 2011 where the Wildcats quadrupled their conference win total from the previous year.

In addition to the team success, Burton’s players received individual recognition for their work on the court. Due to Burton’s recruiting efforts, he has helped produce 22 NCAA Division I signees, 17 all-conference selections, two All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans.

Burton was named ACU’s recruiting coordinator in his final season in Abilene, where he helped assemble a class that consisted of three top 50 players from the state of Texas. Two of those players would continue their playing careers at the next level. Prior to his stint in Abilene, Burton spent one season as an assistant for player development under Jim Boylen at the University of Utah. During his time in Salt Lake City, Burton was responsible for earning the commitment from one of the top 10 players from the state of Texas. Burton had five years of coaching experience from the junior college ranks before making the move to the NCAA. He recorded stops at Richland College, Collin College, Paris Junior College and Midland

Burton has also been invited to work at some of the countries more prestigious camps throughout his career. Those camps include Point Guard College, Texas Prep Basketball School, Reebok Breakout Camp, Reebok Headliner Camp, Jon Lucas Middle School Combine, Texas Elite Camp, Utah Elite Camp and the Five Star Basketball Camp. Burton received his bachelor’s from UT Dallas following a standout playing career. A two-year team captain, Burton led the Division III power to a conference title and postseason appearance, while setting a new school record for wins. The game of basketball runs deep in the Burton family. Burton, and his three brothers all played basketball at the collegiate level. Burton’s younger brother, Jason, is currently the women’s head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Matthew Pace is entering his first season as the Lamar basketball director of operations, but it is his second stop in Beaumont. Pace returns to his alma mater where he served as the student director of operations following his playing career. Pace was a member of the LU basketball team during the 2008-09 season. Following his playing career, Pace accepted a position as a student director of operations. He served in that capacity for the next three seasons, assisting the coaching staff with the day-to-day operations of the office including travel and practice scheduling. Price returns to Beaumont after spending the previous two years in the high school ranks. He spent the 2012-13 season at Northland Christian High School where he served as the head coach for the junior varsity squad, and a varsity assistant coach. Last season, Pace accepted the head coaching position at Sabine Pass. Pace graduated from Lamar in May 2012 with a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in marketing and management.

ALL-TIME ALL-AMERICANS DON BRYSON 1965 Associated Press Third Team Don Bryson, a 6-6 forward from New Orleans, put together an outstanding senior season that culminated in earning Associated Press NCAA College Division Third Team All-America honors. He was the first-ever Cardinal All-American. During that season, Bryson scored 553 points and hauled down 343 rebounds for averages of 23.2 and 14.9, respectively. His 14.9 rebound average still ranks as the second-best in school history, and the 23.2

scoring average is the third-best ever. He helped the Cardinals post an 18-6 record for the year. For his career, Bryson averaged 16.5 points and 12.4 boards per game. His 1,240 career points ranks 14th on the school’s all-time scoring list and his 931 rebounds ranks fourth. He also ranks fifth in field goal percentage at .550. He was a two-time All-Southland Conference Selection.

EARL DOW 1969 Associated Press Third Team Earl Dow became the second Lamar player to pick up All-America honors when he was named to the Associated Press NCAA Division I Third Team as a senior in 1969. Dow, a 6-1 guard from Bayside, N.Y., scored a then-school record 560 points during the 1968-69 season. His 23.3 points per game average that season still ranks as the second-best in school history. He shot 43.9% from the field and 76.9% from the free

throw line as well. He helped Lamar post an outstanding 20-4 record that year. For his career, Dow averaged 20.1 points per game, which ranks as the third-highest career scoring average in school history. He was a two-time First Team All-Southland Conference selection, and he was invited to play in the East-West All-Star Game.

MIKE OLLIVER 1981 Citizen’s Savings Foundation First Team Mike Olliver was named Citizen’s Savings Foundation First Team All-America as a senior in 1981, becoming the third LU All-American. Olliver, a 6-1 guard from Mount Olive, N.C., averaged 22.3 points per game in 1981, and shot a remarkable 51.2% from the field, connecting on 297-of-580 attempts. His 716 points rank as the second-best single season total in school history.

2014-15 Information Guide

For his career, Olliver averaged 20.6 points and ranks as Lamar’s all-time leader in points scored (2,518) and field goals made (1,130). His scoring average and steals (206) rank second, and he’s also fifth in assists (344). He set a then-record for points in a game with 50 vs. Portland State on January 12, 1980, and he finished his career as the 15th all-time leading scorer in NCAA history. Olliver was a four-time All-Southland performer and he was the Player of the Year and Tournament MVP in 1981.
