Conscious Consumption - Sustainable Design Theory

CONSCIOUS

CONSUMP TION

We live in a world of mass consumption. Most of which is ‘unconscious’ because we are disconnected from the consequences. Currently it is difficult for us to understand our consumption because it is out of sight, and therefore out of mind.

The Conscious Consumption theory states objects and physical experiences, we will

that act

by visualising our consumption more responsibly and ultimately

through tangible more sustainably.

We believe that the existing way of metering is poorly designed and old fashioned.

Even today’s ‘smart’ meters, although equipped with clever technologies, lack user engagement and fail to impact people’s everyday life.

The way the current system is set up can leave people feeling a little confused as to how much they actually use and the wider environmental impacts of their behaviour.

Even if people want to live more sustainably it is difficult for them to measure their impact and to witness the benefits minor behavioural changes can have.

Vs From our research we discovered that the majority of people don’t relate, engage with or understand the numbers they are bombarded with under the existing metering systems.

metering can be communicated and contextualised more a universal language that everyone understands. Nature.

That’s why we have created two metering systems of our own, using the principles of the Conscious Consumption Theory.

‘ThinkFISHTank’ and ‘Power Flower’ are first and foremost desirable products that visualise and reflect your consumption. They raise your awareness and physically make an impact on your life through their product experience, helping you save money and reduce your environmental footprint.

we need to visualise consumption in a more tangible way, that promotes and incentivises sustainable behavioural change.

Our vision is a world full of Conscious Consumers, where people strive to stay connected to their consumption and its consequences. Through healthy competition and creativity there is no doubt that Conscious Consumers will be happier people as they save money and the planet at the same time. Win win.

Conscious Consumption is contagious. Once people see others experiencing the social, economic and environmental benefits in the idea it will spread. There is a lot of room for improvement with other major streams of consumption to be targeted. If everyone does a little we can do a lot.

Ask yourself these questions... Do you know how much energy or water you use? Is that a lot? If you think you use what you need, how much do you need? It’s not about pointing the finger and blaming people for consuming. It’s about consuming consciously, appreciating the consequences and creating positive change towards a more sustainable world. Small behavioural changes do make an impact, how do you know if you can’t see?
