P e r s o n a l S tat e m e n t What you will see in the following pages is a selection of my works throughout my professional and educational career, for which I have consistently excelled. However, I would like to stipulate here my yearning to provide more of a contribution than just design flare and an eye for the aesthetic and detail. I believe that Architecture as a profession is in a state of flux, where the next generation of architect will be required to be more dynamic and adjust to the ever changing economic climate and crises. Where I fit within this new role is still uncertain but this is my declaration that I will proceed with the attitude of exploration and open mindedness in the way that the role of the Architect will develop in the hope to ever avoid plateau and ensure continued growth & development. Following nine months travelling through South East Asia, I am coming towards the end of a three month contract at Austin Maynard Architect’s here in Melbourne and now seek a new challenge. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting back to work and look forward to developing my architecture career here long term.

Austin Maynard Architects / Graduate Architect / Design Office of the Year (Aus) Working on a temporary 3 month contract predominantly at later building stages. I completed tender documentation for a c. $2m house. I worked on contract administration drawings for numerous dwellings and completed a sketch design package. The work required me to operate as a self thinker and to use my own initiative, which I enjoy.
2017 - 2018 Freelance Architectural Designer Independently led the design for the conversion of a group of barns into three four bed residential units to planning. Dealt with all negotiations with planners and consultants. Also worked part time whilst travelling for Stonewood Design on a freelance basis. 2015 - 2017 Stonewood Design / Graduate Architect / BD Small Project Architect of the Year 2017 (UK) Regularly liasing and negotiating with contractors. Carried out client meetings independently and as part of team. Daily documentation through all building stages. Given design responsibility over key design elements. Co-ordination and project management of junior members of the team. Regular on site experience and management of builders.
Hobbies I spent a lot of my spare time throughout University writing music and gigging at the weekends with a band. We had a couple of UK and European tours supporting larger American bands and played some great festivals including Glastonbury before disbanding. Doing it at the same time as university was both hugely challenging and rewarding in equal amounts.
Design Research Thesis / Affordable Housing Solutions / Self Build Systems Fundamental & Advanced BIM (Revit) Week Intensive Training Course First Class Design Thesis on Pre-Fabrication Techniques Integrated sustainable Engineering & Architecture modules
2017
Tutor of Architecture / UWE & Bath University (UK) Provided one on one tutorials with 4th and 2nd year students. Gave guest lectures on visualisation and post editing. Attended interim presentations and assisted with marking. Invited by former tutors, I primarily used my holiday allowance to attend the sessions whilst still employed by Stonewood Design. I was asked to return in 2018.
2011 - 2013 Stride Treglown Architects / Mixed Use & Residential Team / International Practice (UK) Part I experience. Worked on a wide variety of projects within residential, commercial, refurbishment and interior design sectors of values ranging from <£1m to £40m. I played a key role in drawing up planning and construction drawing packages as part of a small team on multiple larger scale residential projects. 2011
Designer/Maker / Volunteer Project / “Air Your Laundry” Raising money for homeless charity Shelter we designed and built an art installation / market stall that sought to create a buzz in a deprived area of Bristol.

The LIVE.WORK.MAKE brief for the second year of the masters was developed through meetings with real on site stakeholders. My project developed a masterplan for the site, a custom-build co-housing scheme, selfbuild live-work units and a creative arts maker school in the run down suburban context of Knowle West, Bristol. It sought to redefine traditional methods of living, working, and educating, where the ambition was to foster social cohesion and resiliance amongst a deprived and fractured community through making.

James Eyres
Maker-Work An “Open-Building” System The design of the live work units has been differentiated from the residential character of the custom build houses to be tailored towards the “maker”. These units require more self build skills with a pre determined structure that inhabitants can infill as they wish. The twin glulam structure gives some unity to the street frontage amonst the organic infill. External space rises up through the levels, with the structure giving the potential for informal cover or a framework for greenery.

The concept for the use of the materials stems from the structuralist theory of binary opposition, in the way that two terms or two related terms are opposite in meaning. The strategy was to emphasise this relationship and develop a complementary and contrasting material pallete that draws attention to the way the building is made.

About Stonewood Design A small practice of ten who have received national RIBA recognition for numerous projects and won BD Small Project Architect of the Year 2016. Stonewood Design’s work is founded in building. With a sister construction company, the practice cares and fully understands the detail. The theme that connects their work is their interest in craft and context. I had the ability to work on a diverse range of projects at different stages with an increased level of responsibility due to the practices small size.

Residential A planning application for 20 sustainable new homes in a riverside location in Box Wharf. The scheme maximises the use of the sites complicated topography. We also developed a smaller scheme of
12 homes on the opposite side of the river with a creative tech worker space. The scheme uses a subtle, contempory style that uses materials from the surrounding context.

Swindon housing
“Breaking the status quo of afforable housing
View along canalside An affordable housing scheme for 85 new homes in the Canalside area of Swindon. Working in partnership with urban design specialists Metropolitan Workshops on behalf of Swindon Borough Council. There will be a choice of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bed homes for sale and be situated along both banks of the canal. The scheme aims to deliver a unique, and quality, housing offer for Swindon.
My Experience I worked on early stage strategic masterplanning and helped develop unit types and visualisation. My experience studying house types and residential strategies at University was a helpful contribution to the team. Section through 3 bed typology

A contemporary new-build house which nestles in to the historic fabric of the village of Bruton in Somerset. Utilising a basement amenities floor, the scheme uses multpile pitched roof forms to give grandeur to the internal spaces that open out onto the enclosed south facing garden.
My Experience
I developed on site modelling and design iterations up to planning status. I had direct communication with the client over design concerns and layouts. I attended site meetings and regularly liased with ecologists & required consultants Aerial showing roof form and open courtyard

A new classroom and hall building and new nursery for Kingswood School in Bath. The project is currently on site. The new building will take the form of a collection of pitched and hipped roofs. Roofs and walls will be clad in western red cedar shingles, a woodland crafted response, with a scale that children can relate to. A plinth is formed in a tactile brick which has the tones of Bath stone, relating the building to the wider school site and the World Heritage City.
