RUE DE L’OBSERVATOIRE RE PROGRAMMING THE PARK SITE PLAN
GARRETT SIBINGA NY/PARIS SPRING 2012
PROGRAM DETAIL
CIRCULATION AND UNUSED SPACE
THE CYCLICAL SITE PROJECT THE PROJECT ATTEMPTS TO REDEFINE THE CONTEXT OF FARMING WITHIN THE CITY, BY CREATING SPACE THAT IS BOTH PRODUCTIVE, AND PLEASANT. PARIS'S GREATEST ARCHITECTURAL LOSS, THE MARKET OF LES HALLES, HAPPENED BECAUSE OF THE WASTE AND THE CONGESTION THAT THE MARKET PRODUCED. THE SITE PRODUCES AND RECYCLES THE MATERIALS IT USES, ULTIMATELY NEGATING PROBLEMS WITH CONGESTION AND TRAFFIC. IT COMBINES ASPECTS OF FRENCH HERITAGE, WITH A MODERN ITERATION OF AGRARIAN VALUES, MIXED WITH THE SOCIAL SPACE OF A MARKETPLACE. IT OFFERS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHING, AND ADVANCING THE PROGRAM OF SUSTAINABILITY WITHIN PARIS, WHILE STILL HOLDING TRUE TO THE MARKET TRADITION IN PARIS.

ITS UNPROGRAMMED NATURE, AND PROXIMITY TO LUXEMBOURG GARDENS, MAKE PARC DE L’OBSERVATOIRE AN UNDERUTILIZED AND SUPERFLUOUS SPACE. IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE FUNCTIONAL NATURE OF THE SITE, AND ADVANCE THE PROGRAM OF SUSTAINABLILITY IN PARIS, MY PROJECT AIMS TO ENVISION A NEW WAY TO FARM WITHIN THE CITY.

THE LIVING TOWERS ARE A RE-INTERPRETATION OF TRADITIONAL AGRARIAN VALUES, AND A WAY TO PRODUCTIVELY USE URBAN PARK SPACE TO PRODUCE FOOD. THE CYCLICAL SITE IS AN IDEA ABOUT CREATIVE WAYS TO FARM, AND TO SELL PRODUCE WITHIN DENSELY POPULATED URBAN AREAS. BY USING BUILDING SCALE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM, AND CAPITALIZING ON THE AESTHETIC POTENTIAL OF THE PROCESS, THE PROJECT CREATES FARM TOWERS WHICH ARE HIGHLY EFFICIENT, AND RETAIN SCULPTURAL QUALITIES. IN CONTRAST TO MOST MARKET SITES, THE CYCLICAL SITE IS A SELF CONTAINED ENTITY, WHICH RECYCLES NUTRIENTS WITHIN THE SITE, IN ORDER TO GROW CONTINUOUSLY, AND PRODUCE BOTH FRESH FISH AND PRODUCE SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE TOWERS OFFER HIGHLY DISCOUNTED LIVING SPACE FOR STUDENTS FROM THE NEARBY BOTANICAL COLLEGE, AS PART OF AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, WHERE THEY WORK AND TEACH WITHIN THE SUSTAINABLE FARMING SYSTEM.
