Welcome to Open Day The Essex International Jamboree 2008! by Caroline Hill FOR the past four days, nearly 10,000 Scouts and Guides from more than 30 different countries have been enjoying the activities and atmosphere of the Jamboree. Now we are delighted to welcome you as one of the 4,000 day visitors. This is a special issue of the Jamboree Newspaper, Planet Essex, just for day visitors The theme of the Jamboree is the World’s Endangered Animals and participants have been staying on 10 Sub Camps named after some of the rarest animal species in the world, learning about environmental issues in order to work towards saving these beautiful animals. Each animal can be found at Colchester Zoo and each Sub Camp has been getting involved in the adoption scheme. As you wander around the site, you’ll find a host of different activities for you to enjoy. The Sub Camp Penny Fayres are one way you can help raise money to help the endangered animals at the Zoo. Jamboree life centres on the Market Square, where you can find the Main Arena stage, the cinema, the coffee shop, fast food restaurant “Dino’s,” and the Jamboree shop, the Jamart as well as many other outlets. From 12.30pm to 1.30pm you will be able to eat your lunch in front of the Main Arena Stage, listening to the South East Essex Youth Symphony Orchestra and later watch the Open Day finale featuring the fantastic Jamboree cast. The Activities Field will be open throughout the day and will operate with a queue based system but will have a height, age and parental permission restriction. During the day, on-site participants can do the

Challenge Activities and Arena Activities where they can enjoy challenging themselves with activities such as quad biking, abseiling, playing on the inflatables or going scuba diving. Everyone can also enjoy the amazing spectacle that is falconry as they will be flying at 11am and 3.45pm on the Activities Field. Other activities available include the Rainforest Quiz in the International Plaza – on the International Plaza you can learn about the world today and important environmental and cultural issues with fun games and workshops. At 2.30pm you can either watch or participate in the Race to Extinction, a chariot race in the Activities Arena – the chariots must be in the form of an endangered animal, and there will be prizes for the best animal race machine! You can take part in groups but two people must be prepared to race with your machine. Don’t worry if you can’t bring materials, as they will be provided. On the inside pages, you’ll find a selection of photographs from the various activities this week. But seeing pictures is one thing, living the experience is another. We hope you enjoy your short visit.
