EARTH ARTIFACT 1A Research
i opened this brief with both a scientific perspective alongside the ambition to apply a fun spin on the Voyager mission. In this mind set I looked towards the 1980’s sci fi culture and all the classic films it has produced. In this body of research I didn’t just look into the films propoganda posters but infact small graphics within the films that caught my eye. This idea evolves around the space race’s of the 1900’s and that human desire to reach the stars versus our Earth bound limitations. With this in mind I would apply our most ambiscious scienctific expedition and plac e it into a movie setting.

With this idea of a poster in mind I felt it was appropriate to move away from my inital ambition and begin focusing ona a range of other styles , thus I looked into a vast amount of posters all with a different designer behind them , this would allow to me get a huge variety of inspiration. I was particulary impressed with these london based posters that implied an minimilist style with a basic colour sceheme. This style is something I plan to apply later in the process. The classic 80’s style tardis poster is also very impressive and could become a strong influenece on my later works , as its whole style follows that 80’s sci-fi theme from earlier.

The voyager mission is an incredibly scientific exploration of the unknown and because of this I have looked into applying typography to my poster designs. I researched into this with the mind of applying this idea to the voyager mission. However I was incredibly specific in what kind of typographic poster I documented. This is in light of the golden record, I don’t feel like the golden record succeeds in its simplicity. With this in mind I wanted to apply the mission information of the voyager into complex typographics posters. This idea of providing the information in a incohesive way is something I plan to apply to my own experiments.

After typographic I began looking into posters that used geometry and shape in a very minimilist way. I think the minimalist style has been very important in my research as in many ways it represents space, the void emptyness of space is strongly conveyed in minimalist design. Thus these posters all have a strong geometric basis. All of them use geometry in a variety of ways, I am going to use this bassis and apply it to my own work. It would also be a positive combination with the style of inforgraphical poster I am preparing to create. What is also incredibly important in all of these posters is the use of colour. Colour or in some cases the lack of has a huge impact on the whole poster and is something I will keep in mind in my own creations.

Once I’d finished with the geometric pieces I had covered all the specfifc genre of poster I wanted to cover and simply continued to add to the collection when ever I saw anything I felt was relevant to the project , or if I just liked it myself. The Toystory and Jurrasic Park posters are perfect examples of this they were chosen purely for their stylistic designs as well as their brilliant uses of colour. Through this research the strong concepts I plan to follow are the complex inforgraphs mirroring the complex golden record. While the second concept will be in a way converging our desire for space travel with what we have actually achieved in the form of a movie poster.

I began research into Nasa’s own resources, the golden disk the golden plague , what they both mean and most interestingly a Apoillo flight plan. These were all fascinating to me. The inteded recipient for these disks are exterestreals and as a human I struggled to understand them at the start. I believe they are overally complex for their use and an alien looking to understand them will most probably have a tough time. However I think the most interesting thing about all of these images is the use of imagery and typography within them. This minimalist style is something I am going to approach and influence into my own work as I feel its simplicity is fantastic, despite its poor execution.

I began work on a set of inforgraphs that were reflecting the golden records. They are reflections in the way of their difficulty of understanding. I feel the golden record doesn’t work at representing information simply , thus I felt the voyager inforgraph should have the same effect. I went with a simplistic design , similar to that of my research and applied a range of physics based information about the Voyager missions. Thus you can read into the informationa and figure things out however it’s suppose to be difficult.

For variety I began applying different colour schemes to see which I prefered and added a few different filters to help vary styles and ensure I covered all the styles I wanted to focus on.

I looked back into my research , specifically the apollo flight path document and redeveloped my work into that style. I added a small graphic of the the united states uses circles as circles were a huge part of this inforgraph and then moved back to that classic colour scheme. I was incredibly happy with the final version of this design , howvever wanted to move the project in a different direction. Looking at the 1980’s desire for space travel and the scifi movie industry I wasnted to start moving my idea in a less scientifically focused direction.

I looked into a very minimalist style and began thinking of ways of representing Voyager 1’s journey out of our solar systema and into interstellar space. I wanted to show in a way that the voyager is searching the stars and looking through the unknown. However I further wanted to develop this idea and make the idea even more minimalist.

With the same concept in mind I further developed this minimalist style and began working will less vector illustration and kept shapes to a minimum and by using simple lines and dots I managed to illustrate the voyager cutting through the stars as a boat does through the ocean. This used a range of techniques including a small fact to envelope it into my infographic style and further began developing this idea.

The same way with my inforgraphs I began editing the imagery and adding shapes and extra colour to see what with variety the piece would look like. However with this idea I wanted to move away and back towards the idea of the 1980’s style posters. Thus I created it in a fully fleshed illustrated poster. I used a range of textures and techniques and created a stylised poster. Which included the voyager blasting away from the solar system and into the stars. This idea of detailed posters began moving forward and became very detailed.

For these posters to work I needed a very detailed vector illustration of the voyager and thus by combinig Photoshop and Indesign I created my own image of the voyager to use in my posters. Varying colours and shaders I grabbed to versions to work in later posters. This detail took a lot of time and became much more time consuming than the orignal minimalist posters , thus I became much more invested in this idea.

Thus I developed my own detailed 1980’s style poster and put a lot of effort into it. Using lighting, vectors and textures I managed to illustrate a whole web of galacitic imagery and managed to pull of a detailed poster. This then inclueded the same poster details from earlier such as the steel tongs font and release date , which I then moved through a set of styles and filters to ensure I got the best finish on the poster. The huge title needed a small amount of editing too which required it be slightly out of frame to in many ways emphsies the size of the galaxy.

After putting it through a range of post productions i had my final piece which allowed for darked and more saturated colours and gave the best quality overall poster. This idea arched way back to the beginning of the project and has combined that idea of the 1980’s desire for space travel and combined it with a real scientific expedition which is a more realistic ambition of our Earth bound limitations.
