AMES BALI “WHAT WORKS GOOD IS BETTER THAN WHAT LOOKS GOOD, BECAUSE WHAT WORKS GOOD LASTS.” -RAY EAMES
ALWAYS A KID AT HEART, MY STYLE IS FUN AND PLAYFUL. GROWING UP, I ALWAYS LOVED TO CREATE THINGS WITH PLAY-DOH AND LEGOS. THROUGH GRADE SCHOOL I LOVED MAKING BOARDS AND VIDEO PROJECTS THAT INVOLVED ARTS AND CRAFTS. BEING COMPUTER SAVVY ALONG WITH MY TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE SKILLS LED ME TO INTERIOR DESIGN.

“STUDENTS WITH A.D.D. AND EMOTIONAL DISABILITIES REQUIRE GREATER PHYSICAL AND ACOUSTICAL SEPARATION BETWEEN ACTIVITIES TO REDUCE DISTRACTIONS, SO SINGLE CLASSROOMS CAN BE INADEQUATE.” - ALLEN ABEND. SOLUTION: CREATING LARGE COMMON AREA, ALCOVE WITH LOWER CEILING HEIGHT, AND SMALL ROOM ADJACENT FROM CLASSROOM FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BE ALONE.. HOTEL/GALLERY SPACE
EAMES FURNITURE
LOCATION:
1700 DEL PASO BLVD. SACRAMENTO, CA 95815
BACKGROUND:
FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE GREENS HOTEL, THE DEVELOPER OF THE PROPERTY LOOKED FOR DESIGN INSPIRATION AS TOOL TO REINNOVATE THE HOTEL AND NEARBY GALLERY SPACE. A THEMED HOTEL BASED ON SACRAMENTO BORN DESIGNER RAY EAMES EMERGED AS ONE CONCEPT. THE FOLLOWING PROJECT FOCUSES ON A RAY EAMES THEME AND CREATES A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE FOR HOTEL GUESTS AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THE CONCEPT OF THE HOTEL REVOLVES AROUND THE WORKS AND DESIGNS OF RAY KAISER EAMES. BY USING HER KNOWN WORKS THROUGHOUT THE HOTEL, IT WILL MAKE GUESTS FEEL THAT THEY ARE IN A DIFFERENT WORLD. EACH PART OF THE HOTEL COMMEMORATES THE DIFFERENT DESIGNS THAT SHE HAS DONE BEFORE AND AFTER SHE MET CHARLES EAMES. THE DESIGNS INCLUDED ARE THE ONES SHE WAS MOST INVOLVED AND IN SOME CASES DESIGNED BY HER. THE EXISTING GALLERY SPACE WILL BE A HYBRID OF BOTH A GALLERY SPACE FOR LOCAL ARTISTS AND EXHIBIT OF RAY’S ORIGINAL WORKS. SINCE SHE WAS AN ABSTRACT PAINTER TAUGHT BY HANS HOFMANN BEFORE MEETING CHARLES, THE GALLERY SPACE WILL BE FOR LOCAL ARTISITS ASPIRING ABSTRACT ART. THE EXHIBIT PART OF GALLERY WILL BE FOR RAY EAMES. I INTEND ORIGINAL WORKS THAT GO INTO THE EXHIBIT TO BE DONATED BY THE EAMES OFFICE AND FROM THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM IN DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO WHO ALREADY HAVE AN EXHIBIT FOR RAY EAMES HERSELF UP UNTIL FEBRUARY 2014.

NEW SITE PLAN
TO HELP ORGANIZE THE COURTYARD, I USED HER DOT PATTERN AS A TEMPLATE FOR THE MAIN PATHWAYS. EACH DOT REPRESENT DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE COURTYARD. EACH ARE A SPECIAL AREA OF THE HOTEL THAT INCLUDES THE NORTH GARDEN, THE ENTRANCE, THE COURTYARD AND WATER FEATURE, AND THE AMPHITHEATRE AT THE SOUTHERN END OF THE HOTEL.

TO HELP ORGANIZE THE GALLERY, I USED HER OTHER FABRIC PATTERN TO DEFINE EACH SPACE. THE CROSSPATCH PATTERN LED ME TO CREATE A GRID OF 10’X10’ SPACES. FROM THERE, I MADE EACH SPACE THE APPROPRIATE SIZE BASED ON THE FUNCTION. HERE IS A PROGRESSION THAT LED ME TO THE FINAL DESIGN.
