his large hotel is a little bit special as convention size hotels go. The 1218 one-bedroom suites are set within three residential towers with most capable of sleeping 4 adults (two queen beds) and 2 children on the sofa bed in the lounge area. The rooms are very spacious, fixtures and fittings are toward the luxury end of the market, with the normal home comforts you would expect and want. ≼ 7

≥ For those wanting more room there are 120 two bedroom villas available, each featuring full size kitchen appliances and a large master bedroom suite with a spa bath. These are usually better value when considering two single rooms. A grotto style swimming pool complete with waterfall sits between the three towers providing fun and relaxation to kids and convention goers a like. Cabanas are available to rent too. For those wanting to work-out, a wonderfully bright and airy two-storey fitness centre offers a full range of equipment, matching any serious local gym. The convention areas are in a separate building towards the rear of the property, this helps keep the main reception area relatively compact and personal with no massively wide walkways. The usual hotel facilities include health spa, coffee shop, games room, business centre, 24 hour cafeteria and a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Caribe Royale’s secret is that it is privately owned, this is reflected in the excellent facilities and superb service from it’s long serving staff. No resort or self-parking fees also underlines the added value philosophy here. Last but not least is it’s location, situated just one and half miles from the Disney World gates. Being on World Centre Drive means that you are literally a two minute straight drive to the parks. With room rates available from $149 per night the Caribe is a wise choice, offering a high quality stay and a bit of everything for everyone. ▪

WYNDHAM GRAND

Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek

A WORLD AWAY Peter King spends a few nights at this luxury four diamond resort inside the gates of the Walt Disney World resort. How much of the Disney magic did he find there?

CALL 1-407-390-2300 ▪ WWW.WYNDHAM.COM 13

From my many visits I had certainly heard of Bonnet Creek, home to upscale non-Disney hotels like the Waldorf Astoria but I had never ventured into such laps of luxury. So before the Christmas rush I took the opportunity to experience the area’s newest hotel, The Wyndham Grand Bonnet Creek.

The stylish and contemporary reception area

Situated a short distance from Downtown Disney, a discreet Bonnet Creek Resort sign has you heading up a winding road, each bend seemingly leaving you miles from the hustle and bustle that is Walt Disney World. The Grand suddenly appears on your left and although the Mediterranean and upscale feel is immediate there is no grand drive up to the reception building. At check-in you choose between self or valet parking, although you pay for either privilege, $13 or $21 daily. Being a shy Englishman, not used to having my car brought to me every time I leave the building, I opted

Being a modern, boutique styled, four diamond hotel, the service from the staff was excellent, friendly and attentive but not overbearing or unwelcomed. The lovely Lisa at the Check-in desk took care of me with efficiency and a smile. view of the pool area and lake beyond. Being on my own I chose a Grand King Deluxe room as it includes a balcony. Once in the room and like we all do, I first checked out the view and it was stunning. From my 11th floor balcony I could see Tower of Terror, Expedition Everest, Summit Plummet and Epcot’s World Showcase. The room was certainly spacious with the bathroom sink and vanity in an alcove, the usual fittings you would expect all in tip top, immaculate condition. For the family, there are rooms that include bunk beds in a cleverly designed private recess that features it’s own flat panel T.V. The neighbouring properties sitting around the lake are Wyndham time-share, whose facilities can be used by guests of the hotel. This means access to recreational pastimes including crazy golf, volleyball and a large pirate ship themed swimming pool right next door. A boardwalk Four diamond bunk beds come with a flat panel TV

The pool complex complete with cabanas, spas plus the bar and grill

connecting the properties to each other circles the lake and it’s three fountains. Having done enough walking for the day already, the sun long been set, a relaxing swim was called for. Although not the biggest or most elaborate of hotel pools, the whole area prevailed a sense of peace and calmness. Modern music, lighting and the Back Bay grill created that vacation ambience.

As I slowly cooked in one of the two 103 degree heated spas, the sky lit-up with the fireworks from Epcot’s nightly Illuminations show, reminding me that I was still within Disney World, a stones throw away from the Magic, yet feeling a million miles away too. After a wonderful nights sleep, the bed and bedding more than matching the hotel’s high standards, the luxurious double-sized walk-in shower set me up for the day. The large shower and no bath made total

sense to me, I have never understood the purpose of those tiny baths that you can’t lie down in, what is the point in that! I headed out for a day at nearby Animal Kingdom, safe in the knowledge that I was returning to somewhere great for a little R & R, with no 192 or I4 to contend with. You don’t get any of the Disney hotel benefits such as Extra Magic Hours, pass key charges or Disney dining but children are very welcome, with an active kids club.

The Wyndham Grand is an idea size, with 400 rooms, 24 hour room service, games room, spa and excellent signature seafood restaurant. If you are considering a moderate or deluxe Disney resort but want a quieter base, with great service and high standards, then a stay here would certainly add to your Disney World vacation. I certainly hope to be back with the family, taking advantage of the location but with the feel of staying in a top resort too. ▪

Forming part of the newly expanded Fantasyland, December 6th saw the opening of the Grandest of theme park restaurants, Be Our Guest. A regal setting located within the Beast’s castle is designed to convey the elegance of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ fairytale. Setting the tempo with style and grace were ‘Dancing With Stars’ pro-dancers, Chelsie Hightower and Tony Dovolani as they performed at the official launch ball the previous evening. The main ballroom matched the glamour of the night with it’s 20ft high ceiling adorned with fluffy clouds and cherubs. Three centre- piece sparkling chandeliers provide a glowing ambiance, while large ornate windows afford views of the French winter countryside as snow gently falls outside. Magic Kingdom visitors will feast on French inspired cuisine with great food fast at lunchtime as quick service is offered, then the evening hours provide delicious full table-service dinner. The storytelling extends through the menus as three years of development have resulted in exquisite, elegantly themed dinners. Alcohol is available for the first time within the Magic Kingdom as select wines and beers are included on the menus.

This lavish 550-seat restaurant has three seating locations, the large elegant ballroom as described above and two smaller rooms, the Rose Gallery and the mysterious “West Wing’. A near seven feet tall music box centrepiece, with Belle and the Beast slowly twirling atop, rose accents, painting and tapestries decorate the Rose Gallery. Diners seated in the West Wing will feel the darker side of the Beast, as the claw-slashed portrait of the Prince highlights. From the gargoyles at the bridge entrance to the stained glass windows and other intricate works of art, the attention to detail and richness of the storytelling are hallmarks of Be Our Guest restaurant. Add in servers dressed in European fashions from the 1400’s, the sumptuous dessert trolleys plus meet and greet with the Beast himself, a truly magically dining experience awaits guests of all ages.

hamburgers and more. For those with a sweet tooth the desserts include tempting delights as chocolate cake and strawberry tarts. The lack of snack options like popcorn or ice cream is the only real negative. If you plan to stay a full day in the park and expect to eat twice, then without a doubt it is worth it. It also helps with your budgeting and is nice to know you can have almost anything on the menu at any time. So if you need a drink or fancy a piece of pie then you are covered as you get that ‘all inclusive’ I can have what I want, satisfaction.

SEAFIRE INN A European adventure awaits, Italian pastas, Le Cordon Bleu Club sandwich from France or good ole English favourite, fish & chips. The signature dish is the Chicken Parmigiana Platter.

Exploring

Downtown Orlando’s Nightlife People who experienced the nightlife in downtown Orlando in the 1980s recall it as a energetic and hip party scene, anchored by the historic Church Street Station and its gorgeous multi-venues. While Church Street Station has changed hands many times over the ensuing Shakai Sushi Lounge decades, it hasn’t been able to regain its past glory. However, in recent years, plenty of trendy new bars, clubs and restaurants have opened in the Central Business District resulting in the return of enthusiastic partygoers. Based on my recent experience in downtown, there’s no longer the need to reflect on the past because Downtown Orlando is BACK! ≥

The Abbey Stage

∆ Downtown’s new upscale residential communities have attracted a younger, more affluent and creative crowd, and tourists are leaving the theme parks to experience the city’s authentic appeal. On a recent Friday night, a The Abbey Living Room friend and I decided to hit some the hot spots Downtown and we were not disappointed. Not only was there a wide variety of bars and clubs to experience, there also were excellent dining options, and all within walking distance. While our tour was not all encompassing, here are the highlights of our recent four-hour “pub crawl.” We started out on Church Street with a VIP wine tasting event at Oak Room, a secret little alcove tucked behind the Backroom and above the soon-to-opened Native Social Bar. (You need to know someone to gain access). Romi and Keith Mawardi, brothers from South Florida who are in their mid-20s, recently purchased the entire building at 27 West Church Street and are reinventing its four nightclubs. The Mawardis are visionaries, helping to re-shape downtown Orlando 33

through their development company, TMG Management. The four diverse venues – Oak Room, Native, 23 & Backroom – comprise a total destination where you could easily spend the evening hopping from club-to-club, never leaving the building. Next, we sauntered up to 114 N. Orange Avenue to the recently opened uber-trendy Courtesy Bar, which boasts hand-crafted cocktails and unusual concoctions, with some throwbacks from back in the day. We arrived at the tail end of the Friday night happy hour (from 5-8) just in time to sidle up to the window bar and partake in a glass of the “Antioxidant Punch,” ladled out from a large punch bowl just like you would find in New Orleans. It was yummy and only $4 per glass (with a nice champagne floater). While the location is small, the atmosphere had a big city feel and attracted a Bohemian clientele (at least for happy hour). The mixologist was well versed in traditional drinks like Manhattans and sours and spent a good deal of time trying to convince us to try the Absinthe (no go). ≥

Go florida magazine issue 2 ESSENTIALS

∆ Next, it was time for food, so we headed back down to 19 S. Orange to Shakai Sushi Lounge. Despite having a reservation, there wasn’t an open table in the house; fortunately, the gorgeous hostess found us seats at the sushi bar, which ended up being great for watching the beautiful people. Shakai serves sushi and cocktails in an “ultra lounge” setting, which I interpret as big-city sophisticated. The Asian-inspired ambience featured unique driftwood lighting, original artwork, historic bare brick walls and hanging wood sculptures suspended in racks above the dining tables. Shakai was noisy and the service was somewhat slow (but friendly); however, it was worth the wait since the food – both the sushi and stir-fry – was excellent and the drinks were potent. Now that we had our sustenance, it was time to hit the dance floor for 80s night at The Abbey. While not located on Downtown’s main drag, The Abbey is worth the walk to 100 S. Eola Drive (or take a $10 pedicab like we did). The Abbey bills itself as a mixed-use venue offering “Infinite Entertainment.” Check their website before you go because anything could be in stage ranging from a play, comedy show, cabaret act, live band, etc. Owners Wendy Connor and Ron Legler (who are super cool friends) filled a niche in Orlando by creating an inviting home for locals, thespians, creatives and fun people to hang out and enjoy the arts. The live 80s band that night was “Shadow Cabinet,” which kept the dance floor packed with the young and not-so-young alike. The night was coming to a close, but no trip to downtown Orlando would be complete without a visit to Tier Nightclub, the place to see and be seen in Downtown. Tier was opened in 2012 (again by the Mawardi Bros.) and the line out front is proof that Tier has established itself as the hottest nightclub in all of Central Florida, rivaling what you would find at clubs in Miami’s South Beach or on the Las Vegas strip. Dress to impress or you won’t get in the door and remember that what happens at Tier, stays at Tier!

Dance images at Tier Nightclub

Before we caught the cab home, there was one last thing to do – grab a slice of NY-style pizza from Gino’s, a venerable pizza joint where all downtown partiers go to in the hopes of getting some old-school hangover prevention. It was a very full (and fun) night and illustrated just how much Downtown Orlando has going for it now. If you’re not up for such strenuous venue hopping, any one of the clubs we visited would be ideal for an entire evening enjoying Downtown’s fresh new ambience. ●

6, AVOID THE CROWDS Going off-peak, which is normally early morning, will result in an overall better shopping experience. It is easier to spot those deals and might give you more choice. Special events like Black Friday or store blowout sales could mean a 5am start!

WHEN . . . O G TO Is one of the most asked questions but it’s one with no right or wrong answer. It is down to personal circumstances and preferences, some love hot weather whilst other hate it. Taking children out of school is a sensitive subject for many, there is no doubt that visiting Orlando outside of the holidays will provide much better value for money. The crowds will be lower meaning you can get more done resulting in more bang for

your buck. Our favourite time to visit is in October as the scorching summer sun has eased, often giving gorgeous blue sky warm days and mild evenings. The parks have Halloween events on too offering scary or not-so scary fun. No matter when you visit, with a little planning you will have your best vacation ever, with so much to do and see. Enjoy!
