s summertime comes to an end, orange and black is everywhere, it’s Halloween! A month long opportunity to play dress-up and eat candy, no wonder it’s the second biggest commercial holiday in the U.S. Although technically Halloween is one night, businesses and Theme Parks wish to prolong the festivities. The candy/sweet industries see sales of around two billion dollars, bad for your teeth and waistline but great for their profits. Here at GO florida we are striving to bring you more issues, more often and this special Halloween edition is first of many. I recently took a trip to Orlando (yippee) to see if the theme park celebrations lived up to the hype and my expectations. Central Florida is about choice, attention to detail and entertainment, it’s no different when it comes to Halloween. The offerings in the parks come in two categories, the family friendly trick or treat and sweets found at Disney World, Legoland and SeaWorld or the blood, gore and screams of haunted houses found at Universal Studios and Busch Gardens. Disney and Universal obviously go head to head with their special ticket events but aim their “celebrations” at totally different audiences. I suspect that both are equally successful from a financial point of view, Disney sweetness with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party held at the Magic Kingdom and Universal’s, scaring the living daylights out of you at their Halloween Horror Nights. They are so different it is difficult to make direct

comparisons although for uniqueness, value and additional park content, Universal wins by a (severed) head. The creativity and effort involved in developing the eight haunted houses (or scare mazes) is truly amazing. Every little detail is painstakingly designed to frighten and extract every scream from you, whether it be a howling werewolf, a zombie or spooky sound effect. The film set quality, sound, make-up and costumes in the four houses located in the large soundstages behind Rip Ride Rocket are particularly spectacular. I developed a real sense of self-preservation, putting my cop skills gleaned from watching crime TV to good use, I found myself checking every corner as I entered each new section. Around the Universal Studio’s park the Walking Dead were amongst us, suddenly appearing up close and personal as the thick fog rolled in from the lake. The ‘undead’ or scare-actors focussing on those with a weak disposition as they menacingly stalked their prey. As you get closer to the end of the month it will be increasingly difficult to see all eight houses in one night, unless you purchase the Express Pass, gaining you near front of the line access. This will undoubtedly save many precious hours of standing in line. The two shows, Rocky Horror Show and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure are, excellent, although older non-American’s might not get many of the jibes and in-jokes at Bill & Ted’s. On my experience, Halloween Horror Nights, now in it’s 23rd year will continue to go from strength to strength and scream to scream.

Every little detail is painstakingly designed to frighten and extract every scream from you

By complete contrast, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a real family affair. After HHN I felt the overall atmosphere was a little underwhelming although it was great seeing so many partygoers in fancy dress or Disney costumes. This certainly added to the occasion, clearly many had gone to great lengths (and money), with whole families of pirates or ghosts, plus lots of Snow White, Minnie and Tinkerbell fans. As it was a mid-week, early in October, it was quite easy to view the fireworks and parade. Night-time in the Magic Kingdom is always special, but being able to virtually walk straight on to all the attractions, including Space Mountain and Splash Mountain is a big bonus. We had little wait too for Enchanted Tales with Belle, in which I was selected to use my obvious acting skills (NOT) to play the crucial role of Palace Guard, protecting Belle and her guests!

Around the park there were little touches of friendly ‘spookyness’, while most of Disney’s effort seemed to be in the “Boo-to-You” parade and special Halloween Wishes fireworks – “HalloWishes.” There were plenty of opportunities to load up with treats but little else of real Halloween magic. For those not looking to dress-up or have been to the Magic Kingdom many times before, I would say it is hard to justify the $62 ticket price. However I still say the smile on a child’s face or the gaze-in-awe at HalloWishes is almost priceless. Also aimed mainly at youngsters are the ‘included in admission’ family celebrations at SeaWorld and Legoland. Both parks promise lots of treats, no tricks and plenty of fun with brightly coloured characters, while actively encouraging everyone to dress-up and party down. Like Universal, Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream states no costumes and masks, it caters for an adult audience, promising simulated violence, blood and gore, in fact it is recommended for over 18’s only (Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights recommend over 13’s). It follows a similar theme to HHN, with haunted houses and scare zones, 13 vicious Evils are after your fear and blood. One look at the event website strikes terror as a mixture of suggestion and sharp knives threaten those that dare to visit. Like Christmas I am sure fever pitch is reached as the big day approaches, enhancing further the Halloween experience at whichever park or event appeals to you and your family. Central Florida again proves why it is the best entertainment destination in the world, the variety, the quality and the detail in these various Halloween happenings truly offer something for everyone. No wonder so many of us never consider going anywhere else. HAPPY HAUNTINGS, HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone.

Each weekend in October this “included in park admission” daytime event, takes families on an underwater ‘fantasea’ of bright and colourful adventure. Youngsters in costume can Trick-or-Treat “under the sea” to collect some of the 2 million pieces of sweet treats. As the sun goes down, don’t miss Princess Penelope’s Dance Party filled with music, bubbles and loads of fun. Count Von Count’s character breakfast with Elmo and friends is a great way to start, what will be a Spooktacular day at SeaWorld.

Don’t be afraid to bring the whole family to this spooky spectacular event held at The Magic Kingdom. Get dressed up in your favourite costume and join Mickey and the gang at his annual Halloween party. Eerie lighting, ghostly music and fog effects add to the o-so-slightly ghoulish atmosphere as you tour the park. Take in the magical rides and collect candy from the trick or treat trails and locations. There are plenty of opportunities to meet and dance with friendly and of course more villainous characters as you party on down.

Sparks fly as grave diggers from the Haunted Mansion float take to the streets in Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade. A special Celebrate the Magic show has creepy colours, heroes and villains crawling all over Cinderella’s castle prior to the main event, Happy HalloWishes. Magical fireworks illuminate the night sky to remixes of Disney villain theme tunes, casting a spell you will never forget.

WHEN . . . O G TO Is one of the most asked questions but it’s one with no right or wrong answer. It is down to personal circumstances and preferences, some love hot weather whilst other hate it. Taking children out of school is a sensitive subject for many, there is no doubt that visiting Orlando outside of the holidays will provide much better value for money. The crowds will be lower meaning you can get more done resulting in more bang for your buck.

Our favourite time to visit is in October as the scorching summer sun has eased, often giving gorgeous blue sky warm days and mild evenings. The parks have Halloween events on too offering scary or not-so scary fun. No matter when you visit, with a little planning you will have your best vacation ever, with so much to do and see. Enjoy!
