his 5th year studio project expands upon the process of understanding material and immaterial. The given site on Governor’s island, NYC is surrounded by well known symbols of American and/or urban ideals that could be considered indexical. According to Rosalind Krauss, an index can be defined as “that type of sign which arises as the physical manifestation of a cause, of which traces, imprints, and clues are examples.” The iconic nature of the skyline surrounding Governor’s island provides an indexical context to situate oneself to carefully study the boundary between the physical and metaphysical by creating a unique atmospheric condition through the process of monumentally disrupted and redefined progression.

e were encouraged to make a series of concept drawings by hand, then be able to produce a code-compliant proposal in the span of a few weeks. We needed to be able to make something provocative, yet rapidly iterative, so we created a couple of sketches that we quickly watercolored, scanned, photoshopped to size, and printed full scale on sheets of Strathmore. This process allowed us to make high quality drawings quickly and accurately, and served as a platform to create a series of immaterial architectural documents for our final product.

ach of the main program elements is a study of immaterial function and perception. The ellipsoid meditation space behaves as a massive camera obscura, being only lit inside by ghostly pinhole images of the surrounding urban landscape and Liberty Island. The classroom spaces are situated high above sea level, in between two monumental walls that creates a frame view of the Statue of Liberty from above, and the sound of waves reverberating in the concrete chasm.

UIHLEIN REDESIGN
ihlein Redesign is a project U completed abroad in Segovia, Spain. It tackles issues of historical
preservation and renovation of homes either abandoned or in low-income areas of my home town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The focus of the project was to systematically redefine the typology of 19th century Victorian homes into community centers that stimulate the surrounding urban context.
he example provided is the Thome redevelopment of the historical of Alfred Uihlein, an executive
of the Schlitz Brewing company in the 1890s. It stood in the affluent German neighborhood known as Uihlein Hill, which has since been designated for light industry by the Urban Renewal Program. The original house, was demolished in 1970. This house was specifically selected beause of its preserved schematics, and the design freedom it allowed as a theoretical development of the neighborhood. Drawing inspiration from Gordon Matta-Clark, this house was designed to be a hostel / community center.

TANGO LAS VEGAS
T
he TANGO Resort is a theoretical project created an interdisciplinary design studio consisting of students studying architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. This complex, located on the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip is a study of experiential luxury in hospitality design. During the course of the semester, we were instructed to design two hotel towers, a casino, a minimum of six restaurants, a spa, a nightclub, and an assortment of miscellaneous tourist activities. Under the direction of Lee Cagley, this project manifested itself as a celebration of cultural sensationalism drawing upon the expertise of several design disciplines to incorporate a diverse set of luxuries.
he execution of this project was Tstudent’s done in a way that tested each ability to collaborate outside of their comfort zone: combining branding, multiple digital design tools, and carefully crafted drawing styles.

OPN MASTERCLASS
T
his three-day work shop led by Neyran Turan in Spring, 2018 focused on climate change as a cultural and political idea that requires a renewed architectural imagination. The goal was to address the question of representation in relation to climate change through the design of dioramas that depict imaginary future scenarios within a fictitious natural museum that presents episdoes of resource extraction and waste.
hree other students and I collaborated Tdioramas to create a series of drawings of that explore the economical, ecological, and political situation of electrical waste in Ghana, Africa. Countries all over the world export their electrical waste to Ghana as a means of responsibly disposing otherwise environmentally harmful materials. However, the infrustructure of the system not only does not dispose of the waste, but has grown to be impossible to manage, endangering people’s lives and severely harming the atmosphere.
T
he Magritte-esque image uses the visual contrast of scale between the foreground and background to allude to the deceptive nature of how the curation of information concerning climate change is oftentimes presented: reporting on small portions of overwhelming problems.

RR3 MASTERCLASS
R3 (Rural Route 3) was a three-day R Masterclass held in October of 2017. Students worked collaboratively with
internationally acclaimed architect/artist Catie Newell and ISU faculty member, Pete Goché exploring material and immaterial practices within the post-industrial context of Iowa’s agricultural scene. Using experiential perceptions as spatial conditioners, students focused on the act of making and curating a series of research assemblies (drawings and vernacular artifacts) within a dormant seeddrying facility constructed in 1979 located in Black’s Seed Farm (Black Contemporary) in the service of authenticating the cultural essence of lived space and its capacity to summon the subconscious to enrich one’s perceptual experience.

lack Pauldron was a project completed in a Wearables course that focused upon incorporating tech fabrication into fashion design. This piece was handcrafted from out of three types of leather, 3D printed plastic filament, EL wire, and several types of joinery to create a look that fit the theme of the 2018 Fashion Show at Iowa State University: Resilience. The event was hosted by the Apparel Merchandizing and Design Department, and judged by several guest designers, including Patagonia. Black Pauldron received a scholarship for being first in the Wearable Technology cateogry.

he Old Course Hotel is a hotel owned and operated in St. Andrews adjacent the world’s first golf course. Kohler Co. is currently in the midst of rennovating portions of the building, including the addition of another wing of guestrooms and a grand ballroom. Together with local Scotish designers, we created a set of hand-drawn conceptual drawings to improve upon the existing guestrooms and luxury suites.

SELECTED COLLAGES
T
he following compositions are ones born of a desire to compose, hone technical skills, and relax. Though whimsical, these drawings allow me to explore more artistic methodologies to simply understand the world perceptually. Whether it is portraits, landscapes, or larger abstract ideas, these represent a less constructed stream of consciousness. They draw upon materials from old projects, photos, scraps from work, newspapers, sketches, and other artwork to form a reflective excercise meant to manifest the process of creating, and not necessarily to final outcome.
