The name is Liu, James Liu. I am currently a second year student at The University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The passion that I have towards architecture and design is a solution to helping, saving, and changing the world in any possible way that I can. I would never take the learning process for granted nor the opportunity of becoming an asset to your firm.

SPATIAL MOSAIC IN COLLABORATION WITH: ALAN PHELPS PETER KWAK SSEF STEEL COMPETITION 1B BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

“By simplifying traditional religious space down to their fundamental architecture elements, a cultural mosaic is able to form” - Alan Phelps The objective was to design a common, modular space that continually recycled in order to host the spiritual complexity of the modern era. The form, consisting of a thick, tangible steel frame floating inside a lightweight steel grid, elevates the user above the local infrastructure and into enlightenment. It is located in the city of Markham, Ontario based on its current identity as a ethnic mosaic with a 72% visible minority rate within it’s inhabitants.

A MAKER’S SPACE INSTRUCTOR: RICK ANDRIGHETTI 1A FINAL STUDIO PROJECT

The objective was to design a 100 square meter residence where any local artist or craftspeople can inhabit and work. Located in the city of Galt along the Grand River, I was propelled to produce the minimalistic structure that definably separates the program of work from the private living space. The massing in the process of production were two identical rectangular prisms (5m x 10m) cantilevered on top of one another and balanced by the site’s hill and the courtyard walls with the support of columns.

JUNK SPACE INSTRUCTOR: DON MCKAY IN COLLABORATION WITH: ALICE HUANG KENISHA KATYAL JESSICA PARK 1B DESIGN STUDIO The project turns a leftover space in the city of Cambridge, Ontario into a residential housing development. With inspiration stemming from the nature of a geode, the aim is to create an introverted community that has a rough exterior and crystalline interior. One of which promoted a meticulous architectural play of opaque, translucent and transparent surfaces and planes. The exterior walls are glazed with frosted glass to create the moment of an existing introverted community space.

URBAN MICROINSTITUTION INSTRUCTOR: DON MCKAY 1B FINAL DESIGN PROJECT

“Public libraries are known to preserve books for the people” - James Liu Knowledge and wisdom found in books can be comprehended as a vital source of information that represents longevity for the mind. The design was derived from a structure that functions as a longitudinal space by the use of alignment to lead and direct people with a circulation of long pathways filled with bookshelves side by side.
