4 Types Of Crappie Baits Crappie fishing is many angler's favorite type of fishing. It's not hard to see why; Crappie are the number one pan fish in North America, that means they're easy to find, can be very friendly and don't seem to mind human contact too much. They also fight well on light tackle.

Crappie fishing in the spring is a favorite for many anglers. Crappie can be found in heavy cover, shallow water and all over the lake in the springtime. They bite better in these conditions because they spawn at this time of year, which means the instinct to reproduce overrides their common sense. Once you find where they are it's a matter of getting your bait to them.

There are four different types of crappie baits that will produce fish in the spring, here they are:

#1) Minnows - In my opinion this is still the number one choice for catching crappie. I suggest at least a half ounce jighead which you should twirl around to give it a good action. Crappie will attack this and won't let go, so be ready with your lighter line and net.

#2) Tube Jigs - This is the second best choice for catching crappie in the spring, especially in heavy vegetation where minnows can't get through. It seems these type of baits get crappie to bite harder than minnows or any other bait in the springtime. Tube jigs usually don't require a weight on them so they can run down and through vegetation easily without hanging up.

#3) Live Minnows - This is probably one of the more popular methods for catching crappie. If you can get minnows, live or dead, this is a very productive way to catch them. Minnows are the best bait for catching crappie in my opinion so they should do well until the water reaches the high sixties or low seventies in temperature.

#4) Small Plastics - This method is a good choice for catching crappie, especially earlier in the spring. Live minnows are still a better choice for this time of year so keep that in mind if you have the option. The downside to small plastics is that they don't run as far down into thick vegetation as tube jigs do and thus can hang up. That can be a problem if you're fishing around vegetation.

These are the four top baits for catching crappie in the springtime, not just because of what works best or catches most fish but also because they are the least complicated methods. The last thing you want to do is have your line get tangled up on one of those cold spring days.
