How To Choose Spinning reels for bass
We all know that fishing is a hobby that has been around for thousands of years. The thrill of catching something can't be matched by many other activities, and it's one of the few sports where you use your own hands to catch your prey. Fishing reels are an essential part in this process, so it's important to know how to choose them in order to ensure the best experience possible. This blog post will help walk you through some tips on choosing spinning reels for bass fishing! I have been fishing my whole life whether it was for bluegill, crappie or bass. Even though I have caught my fair share of all three species, my favorite is still the largemouth bass. There's just something about that 'Big Ugly' when he inhales your worm, frog or bug. I own quite a few spinning reels. They range from the super expensive Zebco 33 up to $200 reels like my Shimano Curado 300e6. I love them all, but if I had to pick one over all of them it would be my Abu Garcia Revo STX. I have never caught a big bass on this reel, but I have landed more than my share of 10 to 15 pounders with it. We'll get into why in just a bit.First, let's start at the beginning. The Abu Garcia Revo STX was introduced to the public in 2003 or 2004 at ICAST, the annual fishing tackle show held in Orlando every year. A few of us from BassFan took a trip out to Abu Garcia's booth and as we walked into their space they were giving away little lures with Abu Garcia written on them. At first I didn't think it was over boots, but after a closer look I realized that my boots were now Abu Garcia Boots. I was walking around the rest of the show with a grin on my face and people walking by me kept asking if I used them. I still have those boots and they are my boat fishing boots today. Ok, enough about Abu Garcia's marketing ploy, let's talk about this wonder of a reel shall we? The Abu Garcia Revo STX is a high tech combination of carbon fiber, stainless steel and aluminum. It features a roller bearing at the front that supports the free spool mechanism. This means that you can fish for hours upon end without having to worry about your line binding or your spool seizing up. The Abu Garcia Revo STX, like all Abu Garcia reels, also features a centrifugal brake that can be dialed in to use at different setting depending on the size/strength of the fish you are fighting. This is a major plus when dragging a big bass out of heavy cover. I have had the brake on full strength come into play more than once when fighting a giant largemouth that was hiding in thick brier patches or laydowns.
The Abu Garcia Revo STX is also loaded with Abu's Triple Drag system consisting of two external star drag systems and one front-mounted cage style internal drag. This allows you to adjust the drag all the way up if needed and also makes it easier to reach for those with large hands like mine. One of my favorite features is that there are no screws on this reel! The Abu Garcia Revo STX uses their QuickFire II system where your thumb sits down in a cup and your forefinger sits on top of a small button. This allows you to adjust the drag quickly whether it's on the fly or locked down for big fish. Of course, if I had one gripe about this system is that since the QuickFire II buttons are so close together, sometimes during a fight I can bump them accidentally and it will knock the drag off the reel. This is not a major problem as I have been able to readjust during a fight, but it has happened several times since I've owned this reel. Another thing that you need to know about Abu Garcia's reels is that they are known for their superior casting abilities. It is a reel that I will only use on my baitcasting rods. The Abu Garcia Revo STX can cast circles around any spinning reel I have owned. This has allowed me to not only put more distance between myself and the fish, but also out perform other anglers when fishing tournaments.
I have been able to consistently get double the distance of other anglers when fishing for bass. I have even out fished a few people with conventional reels simply because they just could not believe that I had a spinning reel, until it was too late. Ok, enough about the technical stuff!
