The Bowland Beer Hall recently scooped CAMRA’s award for Britain’s best pub conversion and the East Lancashire CAMRA pub of the year, putting Clitheroe on the beer map. With an award-winning pub, award-winning brewery and the brand new Spinning Block Hotel all on one site taking a short break ‘that’s all about the beer’ has never been more apt.

Right at the heart of Holmes Mill you will find Bowland Brewery. Our Ales of Outstanding Natural Beauty are brewed right here beneath the chimney at Holmes Mill – just behind our famous Beer Hall – where a dedicated team of artisan brewers crafts a collection of cask beers inspired by the outstandingly beautiful landscape of Bowland

With 42 hand-pull pumps on the 105ft 8” long island bar – one of the longest in Britain – the beer hall showcases a minimum of 24 cask ales at any one time. Six core Bowland Ales from the brewery next door are a per manent fixture on the bar, but the rest change on a weekly basis. Casks are tapped on a Wednesday and ready to pour on #NewBeerThursday – something of a regular feature among local ale enthusiasts.

THE NEW INN Situated in the shadow of Clitheroe’s medieval castle keep, is in itself a heritage site to English pub nostalgia. Open fires in winter, and a full-bloom garden in summer. Frequent (often spontaneous) acoustic folk music jam sessions, and a sparkled pint of best bitter so clear you can read a novel through it. Just mind you don’t trip over one of the several pub dogs sprawled on the floor.

THE ALE HOUSE Proprietor Simon Forster is one of the Ribble Valley’s craft beer pioneers and his compact little bar slap bang in the middle of town. With its bricolage of reclaimed timber, mismatched fur niture and eclectic breweriana, will make any garden-shed-bar enthusiast feel right at home. Here, you will find fridges full of hop rockets and juice bombs, as well as treasure trove of lesser spotted beers imported from across the pond, reflecting the owner’s fondness of Americana. Busy during the week and packed at weekends – especially if Simon’s crammed a popular band into the tiny perfor mance space. THE BEER SHACK The Beer Shack is a masterclass in up-cycling a defunct space. The owners have taken a for mer clothes shop and completely transfor med it in a light, airy and moder n drinking venue, whilst maintaining the home comforts and intimacies of a pub. Try one of several locally sourced beers in their superb sun-trap decking area to the rear.

CORTO Clitheroe’s latest splash of colour to an otherwise moribund high street, sees a local husband and wife duo fulfilling their younger selves’ dream of bringing a slice of European drinking culture to the Ribble Valley. Inter nationally acclaimed beers and ciders are served up with their own brand ‘tasty snacks’ in a space designed around conversation, sharing, and friends.
