Edwin Fox Ship - Picton Marlborough HAVE YOU HEARD OF EDWIN FOX?

This international maritime treasure has been on countless round-the-world adventures and now rests offshore in Picton, where it is on permanent display at the Edwin Fox Museum. Located on Dunbar Wharf, a visit to the Edwin Fox Museum is bound to fascinate. Inside the museum, you’ll learn all about the ship’s checkered history as a troop carrier, an immigrant ship, and even as a convict transporter. Built in 1853 of teak and saul timber in just nine months, Edwin Fox served as a troop

ship for the Crimean War and reputedly carried such illustrious passengers as Florence Nightingale! In 1858, she was chartered by the British Government to transport convicts to Freemantle in WA, making her the last surviving ship that took convicts to Australia. This is just a small snippet of her intriguing past. And that’s not all – at The Edwin Fox Museum, you can even climb aboard the ship herself, where you can explore her decks and depths. On your adventure you’ll discover relics found onboard, while innovative displays show what life was like for those who sailed on her.

The Magic of Exquisite “Vocal Chords”!

Way back in 1888, in a Florence, Alabama barbershop a small group of African-American men gathered in a huddle and started humming and singing folk songs and gospels in their own, traditional style. They repeated the same thing in other barbershops and also serenaded their sweethearts with love songs. In 1910, on the street corners of New Orleans a ten-year-old Louis Armstrong sang tenor in a quartet (yes, the same Armstrong with the gravel voice who later made “What a Wonderful World” world-famous). Singing and socialising around hair-cutting in places that in Western Society came to be known as barbershops (eg Barber of Seville) have been historically universal for humankind. Barbershop quartetting was pervasive in African-American culture in the late 1800s when the black communities harmonized and improvised popular songs as well as spirituals. These beginnings are considered to have formed the cradle of what is now known as Barbershop chorus and quartet harmony singing – a capella vocal music with tight fourpart chords for every note. The melody is sung by the lead, the tenor harmonizes above the lead, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone weaves his notes in-between to complete the chord. The magic of the correctly pitched Barbershop chord seems to be in the mysterious appearance of a high-pitched ringing note (overtone) that nobody is singing but is the product of the other four harmony notes resonating together. It gives rise to the pleasing perception of a “fifth voice”, uniting the chord, felt as much as heard, raising the hairs on the

6

back of the neck and goose-flesh on the forearm. White male singers got hooked into this style of singing and brought it onto song-sheets and into the recording studio scene while infusing it with some of their own traditions. Broadcasting led to spreading the style to cities and towns in the USA and other continents. Inevitably Barbershop harmonising reached the shores of New Zealand where it brought forth budding choruses and quartets in several town centres. Ultimately in 1995 a seed fell on fertile soil in Blenheim where a small group of enthusiastic singers ……. gathered in a huddle and commenced harmonising! Soon they founded the Marlborough Sounds Chorus and the rest is history – this Chorus grew and participated in the annual NZ Barbershop conventions where both Chorus and quartets won several gold, silver and bronze medals. They also represented Marlborough in international conventions in Hawaii, Sydney and Brisbane. In a pursuit where friendship, respect and cooperation are necessary, the Marlborough Chorus stands out, and is recognised throughout the Barbershop community for its great camaraderie. In 2016 the Chorus hosted a national convention in the brand-new ASB Theatre where choruses from over New Zealand convened to compete for medals and bragging rights. The Convention was a resounding success and achieved the goals of showcasing Barbershop singing as well as promoting Marlborough to the rest of the country and also to the overseas visitors attending. The MSC and its quartets regularly perform at rest

homes and other public venues. Their repertoire includes a variety of contemporary popular songs, local and foreign folk songs, golden oldies and even ancient songs. They are proud of their heritage of camaraderie which includes their spouses, family and friends in their recreational activities. They love to ply their craft in public and welcome invitations to perform at any social gathering. They also invite newcomers to join their Chorus. The ability to read music is not essential and newcomers are easily integrated into the group and helped to absorb the characteristics of Barbershop singing. The only requirement is a love for singing! Scientific research has shown that group singing can improve physical, emotional and social health: • Body and Mind. Singing exercises the brain and improves breathing, posture and muscle relaxation. It has been shown to relief pain, probably due to the release of neurochemicals. Learning new songs is cognitively stimulating and helps the memory, assisting those suffering from dementia. • Psychological. Singing does improve peoples’ sense of happiness and well-being, they feel more positive after group-singing, possibly due to the music enabling close and rapid social bonding. • It is therefore no surprise that in the MSC of 20 singers there are two general practitioners and a psychiatrist!

The MSC and its quartets will compete against other choruses in all future national Barbershop Harmony New Zealand Conventions. While striving to win medals will incentivize the Chorus to hone its skills and up its game, their focus will always be on the pursuit of their mission: “ To create joy for ourselves and our audiences through quality Barbershop singing.”

The MSC rehearse every Monday night 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Spring Creek Church Hall in Ferry Street. Interested parties may contact Johan at 021 062 1057 email jduplessis@xtra.co.nz or Don at 021 0826 3132 email donaldarthurquick@gmail.com

Community Choir Lifts Spirits So- here you are, just arrived in Blenheim, and wondering what there is to see and do in the early evening. Why not take a stroll around the inmost areas of the town, around the river, past the ASB Theatre, down Alfred Street to Seymour Square, with its beautiful trees and gardens tended by gifted horticulturists. There, in particular, you can see an outstanding free-form perennial border, spread under venerable, aged trees. Go round the corner heading north into Henry Street, and if it is a Tuesday evening, then as you approach the Wesley Centre, you will see the lights of a warmly lit auditorium, and hear the sounds floating out from a choir in its weekly rehearsal. Known as Blenheim Choral, this is a community choir, un-auditioned, and welcoming all comers. This year it is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Over the course of those 60 years, it has had many great moments, and for the last seven years it has been directed brilliantly by Robert Tucker, a well-known baritone and opera singer. His decision to live and raise his family in the friendly atmosphere of a provincial town has brought a huge benefit to the choir. Using his knowledge of voice production and of great music, delivered through fun and laughter, he helps people discover that they can sing so much better than they ever thought they could. After the last two years of lockdowns, social distancing, and ongoing disruptions, it has been hugely important for the choir to get back together. It was already a proven fact that singing together is an excellent boost for both physical and mental health,

and the recent years of isolation have thrown that fact into stark relief. If you see the singers coming out after rehearsal, you will see them all in good spirits, chatting happily and feeling uplifted. Normally Blenheim Choral produces two concerts a year, taking in the many styles and preferences that different people have. They have presented collections of Broadway songs, featuring Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein; of songs by David Bowie and Queen; of folk songs, Gospel songs, “Art” songs; and then songs from the classical repertoire, such as Vivaldi’s Requiem, Faure’s Requiem, and “The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. Most recently, they prepared an opera, “Acis and Galatea”, by Handel, which, in the end, could only be performed as choruses because of lockdown restrictions. This was a huge disappointment. But most loved of all, is always Handel’s Messiah. Because everything is still so uncertain, it has been decided that the choir will just concentrate on the joy of singing together through the winter months, rather than trying to mount a mid-year concert. Then, all the stops will be pulled out for a performance of the Messiah. This will be on Dec 9 at the Nativity Church. There will be guest soloists from around New Zealand, and the great organist, Jonathan Berkahns, will play. It will be a real Christmas treat. Come back to Blenheim in December and hear this great work. Soap making comes naturally We, Richard and Jenny, founded in 1998 our local business Jeymar Soap & Body and we still love to run it today. It is a boutique business run from premises on our five-acre rural home property by the Wairau River in the township of Wairau Valley, 38km southwest of Blenheim. Our setting helps with the inspiration for our natural body products – great river, great mountains (the Richmond Range is right in front of us), in a great community. Our little shop on our premises is open most of the time, and we welcome people to come and chat with us about the soap-making process, sample the many products we have available and, enjoy our fabulous view. Also, to meet our cute black lab, Kali. We started up the business around the time of the arrival of our two children. In those early days, everything was done in

16

the home kitchen but, over the years, we have progressed from there to a special manufacturing facility plus our shop. Nowadays we are fortunate to supply a wide range of customers with our handmade body products, from top hotels/motels/lodges to health stores, pharmacies, and more. A large part of our business comes from our specialty of personalising the label for the customer’s own business, allowing them to put their branding to the fore. We are both heavily involved in a variety of local community groups - Richard is the Chief of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade and is also a Justice of the Peace. Jenny is involved with Blenheim Choral as a member and Secretary, and a Board of Trustee for our local historic memorial hall. On our small block, we also run free-range chickens and a few

organic cattle. Our products include as well as 10 types of body soap - hair shampoo bar, plastic-free hair conditioner bar, lotions, body wash, wheat bags, and more plus a wide range of giftware too. We take pride in using as many locally sourced ingredients as we can, and we don’t use any artificial colours, fragrances, or preservatives. Just pure essential oils and ingredients from nature. Please feel free to call us, or come and visit. We are at 33 Church Lane, Wairau Valley. Ph 03 5722 547. Web: jeymarsoap.nz, Email: soap@jeymar.co.nz Facebook: www.facebook.com/ JeymarSoap

In our production processes we conserve wherever possible and have reduced our waste to near zero. • Our home and business combined give us a carbon footprint of only ½ the size of our property • All our shipping packing is reused, and totally recyclable at the other end • For our soaps, all wrapping is totally biodegradable and mostly we use recycled paper. The majority of the bottles that we

fill are made from 100% recycled plastic. • A significant proportion of our ingredients is sourced locally thereby supporting the local economy and cutting down on shipping • It is company policy that waste is kept to an absolute minimum: all organic matter is either composted or fed to our hens/cattle; all scrap soap is reused in the washing machine; anything possible is recycled or reused.

Over the years we have sold some pretty unusual items, massive carved seat given to a lady by the King of Tonga, a framed letter from Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, aeroplane props, large headlight from a steam train, Roman artefacts, ship wreck items etc. The shop has a floor area of approx 200 square metres.

Along the way, you’ll learn about the wine pioneers who recognised something special in this land in the 1880s, a century before the first vines of the modern era were planted, and our sauvignon blanc hit the international stage. Visit some of those original wine labels, meet the families who continue the legacy, and find out why our soils, climate and winemakers’ visions make our award-winning wines impossible to imitate. However you choose to explore our region, you’ll soon know why the world celebrates Marlborough wine.
