Hurunui trails.org.nz Hanmer Springs has always been best known for it’s iconic hot springs, a place for rejuvenation and repair. In recent decades the Hanmer Basin and surrounds have reverberated to the picks and shovels of a dedicated group of residents crafting, what is now a world class, series of mountain bike trails. Hanmer has become the New Zealand epitome of the world wide phenomenon described as Trail Towns - towns that have a focus on walking and riding trails, all accessed from the centre of town.
4
Mountain bike trails have been focused around the gradual progression of a riders skills with an almost concentric circle of trails from easy rides close to town on the flat to intermediate trails on the lower slopes graduating into the Advanced and Expert trails higher on the slopes of Mt Isobel. Don’t know what the grade is like? - simple ride our specialist Grading Trail, a trail that has 50m sections from easy to expert so you can have a ‘taste’ but always have an easy way out, before you head out for your adventure.
- Easy Rider, Perseverance and Southern Cross will be perfect, want to move up a grade - ride Swamp up and the Swoop down - you’ll have the ‘Swoop Smile’ once done, or perhaps head up Upper Dog Stream and back down Mach1.
Just starting or just want a chilled out ride
For a big country adventure, head over
For advanced riders, the real treat is what is becoming known internationally as one of the best examples of a hand built trail - Tombstone Trail, then throw in Yankee Zephyr, Red Rock, Big Foot and Detox and you’ll be ready for those hot pools.
to the Clarence Valley and New Zealand’s first Great Ride, The St James Cycle Trail, a 60km intermediate and advanced adventure in the big country - at your feet the historic St James Station, on your horizon the high peaks of the upper Waiau. Walking is always associated with great health and recovery, rising at the head of our aptly main street - Conical Hill Road is - Te Tihi o Rauheu, Conical Hill - a must do walk, especially the newly signed loop that will return you to the centre of town via the Woodland Ponds and Dog Stream Reserve. From the summit the Hanmer Basin is laid out before you and over your shoulder the peaks that are the gateway to the St James and Molesworth back country. Walking trails rise high to the summits of Mt Isobel and Dunblane with a web of interconnecting trails to get there. Hanmer Springs was one of the countries first sites for forestry research, resulting in the 204ha Heritage Forest, crisscrossed with serene walks through the towering conifers and the recently developed Sculpture Walk on it’s Forest Amble trail - animals carved out of recovered redwood logs.

A Satisfying Solution to Food Waste In a small North Canterbury town there is a charity working hard to redirect food waste to make a difference. Based in Kaiapoi, Satisfy Food Rescue collects food from local supermarkets, redistributing this to community organisations helping people in need. Started seven years ago, Satisfy Food Rescue was the brainchild of Phillipa Hunt, who decided to become part of the food waste solution. She was astounded after discovering that a third of the food that is produced is wasted. Phillipa says “it’s absolutely criminal that so much food is going to waste when there are so many people in the world that are hungry. Much of this change can start at home, it all begins with honouring food and not taking it for granted”. The concept of food rescue takes food that is unable to be sold because it is close to the end of its shelf life, but still perfectly edible and redistributes it to where it’s needed. The charity employs a team of 5 to manage their dayto-day operation including over 30 volunteers, without whom they could not distribute the amount of food that they do; over 15 tonnes of food a month which goes to 31 organisations across North Canterbury. Stef Van Meer, Manager at Satisfy says “Post 2020 lockdown our food distribution volume has increased by an enormous 63%.
This is helping to meet the increasing need and thankfully we have support of our donors. One such donor, The New Zealand Food Network (NZFN), started their national food rescue distribution network last year, distributing food to various food hubs across NZ, including Satisfy. In addition to our supermarket donors, other local businesses and growers have become more aware of their social responsibility where edible food waste is concerned. The farmer that may once have simply dug back into the paddock produce not suitable to sell, will now make arrangements with charities such as Satisfy to provide that food somewhere it can make a difference.” Satisfy is a hive of activity every day, from regular daily collections by the bright green Satisfy van, pallets of food and crates of produce from growers arriving with even local gardeners dropping in excess grown produce. There’s no donation too small. Last year an incredible project was initiated by the local Oxford & District Lions through a collaboration that Satisfy is involved in called Food Secure North Canterbury (FSNC). The Lions came with an idea of planting potatoes, to then harvest and donate to Satisfy to distribute. This meant extremely fresh
produce was being donated which had a longer shelf life than rescued produce. This partnership will be replicated this year, with a view to doubling the harvest! With land in abundance, FSNC believes there is no limit to what can be achieved for food security and hope to inspire others in the region to join in. With so much great work going on in the North Canterbury region, there’s a big opportunity to get involved. If you would like to know more, visit satisfyfoodrescue.org.nz.

Twice But Nice Charity Clothing H A N M E R
S P R I N G S
Twice But Nice Charity clothing started when Mike Shaxon had an idea during our first lock down. to help those stranded in the Village and locals with warm clothing. Teaming up in July 2020 with his wife Joanne and 10 Hanmer Springs locals, our aim was realized with generous donations of counters, display racks, carpet and of course great quality clothing, to open the Shop situated at No 6 - 30 Conical Hill road beside the Chisholm Playground.
As of July 2021 we have been operating for 1 year, with a generous rental from Landlord Francis Hammond.
Our volunteers love humour and named our mannequins Molly & Dolly they were donated by a supportive local retailer and are a great asset as they thrive on displaying our clothing work for free and always agree with our customers!
