President’s Report LINDSEY CARNEY
D
ear James River Family,
Happy New Year! I trust that all of our James River family enjoyed a lovely holiday season full of time with family and friends, Christmas cheer and laughter. I wish each of you and your families good health, happiness and success in 2024. The start of a new year inherently sparks change – it is a time for reflection on what worked in the previous year, what we want more (and less) of in the new year and what are our intentions for the new year. Your club is kicking off the new year with change of its own. The onset of the year has brought a slightly different experience for food and beverage services - dining in the Private Dining Room and Sunroom and lounge activities in the Ballroom. The locations may be different, but excellent service and attention to Membership experience remain priorities. The temporary period of adjustment will be well worth it, and I encourage you to be among the first to dine in the newly renovated River Room and Huntington Lounge when services resume in those locations on Tuesday, March 12.
And, it goes without saying…bring your friends and colleagues, your family and prospective new members… continue to make lasting memories at your Club. The Club’s leadership is committed to giving our Members more of what worked in 2023 and our intention is for our Members to want to show up and use your Club. To enable your continued and, hopefully, enhanced use of your Club, we are working to make our dining and lounge gathering areas more efficient in a beautiful, updated setting that enables views of the James River from every seat.

MEMBERSHIP The initiative to renovate and improve the River Room and Huntington Lounge prompted me to search the history of the Clubhouse. On July 23, 1931, A. Byron Williams was selected by the then-Board of Directors of James River Country Club to furnish design, plans and specifications for a Clubhouse and to supervise construction. In 1932, the Clubhouse plans were redrawn to include a Museum wing. The Clubhouse was opened on July 2, 1932.
Between the completion of the Clubhouse in 1 9 3 2 a n d t h e 2 5th anniversary of James River Country Club, membership increased by 36%, due in large part to expansions of the Clubhouse.
It was observed on the 25th anniversary of the Club, that the physical size of the clubhouse grew through the years by additions – it was said that the Club expanded by porches.

MEMBERSHIP The back porch adjacent to the 18th green was added in 1950, screened in 1952, enclosed in 1955 and converted for bar use in 1956.
The new River Room dining room was added in 1956.

MEMBERSHIP You’ll be interested to know that though the parties may look a little differently today, many of our member parties originated during the early years of the Club. The first Oyster Roast was held on Club property on November 7, 1931, before the Club even opened – it was open to all subscribers of stock. The Fourth of July party originated on the official day of opening. The Christmas Party and New Year’s Eve Dance date back to the early years of the Club.
Though your Club has changed over the years, reminiscing about its history is a way to remember the pioneers who established the club and the efforts of all Members who have generously given their time and talents to enhance and grow the Club (and its infrastructure and amenities) and to cherish the pleasure, fellowship and experience that we enjoy as Members.
I look forward to seeing all of you in 2024, and especially on January 9 when dining resumes in the Clubhouse (in the Private Dining Room, Sunroom and Ballroom) and on March 12, when Members will be welcomed back to the newly renovated River Room and Huntington Lounge.
As always, there’s more, and possibly the best yet, to come.
Best wishes, Lindsey
James River Country Club

Members of the Quarter MATT & ADELE LOCKHART
F
irst of all, thank you to all the wonderful staff, management, board members, and committee volunteers that keep this great place running. You do a great job making a tough job look easy. Our family is honored and grateful to be selected as the members of the quarter. And thank you to all the great members and dear friends that make this place a second home for us. It feels like family here and that’s the most special part of being a member. My wife, Adele, myself and our two daughters Kennedy (12) and Caroline (11) joined as a young family about 10 years ago. We are professional real estate investors and real estate asset managers and we were both born and raised here. My mother and father, Janet and Dr. John Lockhart, have been members here since the 80’s. I have so many great memories growing up here. It has been exciting to see it progress through the years. The new pro shop, fitness center, cabana, tennis facility, the new basement and now the upgrades coming to the dining room. JRCC just keeps getting better!!!! Any guests we have here I’m always proud to show them the improvements and give a little tour – they are always impressed. Plus, all the seasonal parties are a blast, and what a great place to have an event. We were married here and have hosted several other events throughout the years. And then there is the golf; best greens I know of in the State, a fantastic course that’s always meticulously maintained, and a tee sheet that’s usually wide open. Half the days it feels like you have the whole course to yourself. We’re grateful for all the wonderful friends we have here and the great sense of community that comes with being a part of JRCC. Thanks everybody!!! James River Country Club

Employee of the Month KYRIE RAYBURN
K
yrie Rayburn is the sweet face you see in the Golf shop several days each week. She serves as a member service specialist for the Golf Department.
Kyrie was born and raised in Newport News with her three brothers and is currently a high school senior attending Menchville High School. She is extremely active in school activities. When she’s not busy playing lacrosse, she spends time participating in her School Yearbook Club and Student Council. She spends most of her free time going to the gym, doing volunteer work, and hanging out with her friends. After graduating she plans to apply to a Biology Pre-Med program and one day hopes to practice Anesthesiology. Kyrie is a member favorite in the Golf Shop. Her calm and steady nature makes her the perfect fit to handle all the hustle and bustle of the golf operation; never missing a beat whatever the challenge. We appreciate all that Kyrie brings to the Club; her enthusiasm and polished member service highlight the things we love most about developing young workers to send out into the world. Thank you for all you do, Kyrie, and congratulations on being named January’s Employee of the Month! James River Country Club

In Memoriam December - January
R ICHARD LAWRENCE S ALLADE M.D. A UGUST 16, 1929 – DECEMBER 15, 2023
Dr. Sallade graduated from Ohio University and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital where he met his wife Maureen. They lived in Boston while he completed his residency in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston VA Medical Center. He served as a physician in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Minot, ND. He relocated to Durham, NC where he was on the urology staff at Duke University Hospital and served as Chief of Urology at the Durham VA Medical Center. In 1964, Dr. Sallade joined Hampton Roads Urology and served on the medical staff of Riverside Regional Medical Center until his retirement in 1999 at age 70. Dr. Sallade was elected to the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, a lifelong honor bestowed to physicians dedicated to the profession and art of healing. He also served on the Board of Directors at Riverside Hospital and as President of both the Newport News Medical Society and the Virginia Urological Society. Dr. Sallade was active in community leadership roles which included serving as the President of the Peninsula Symphony and on the boards of the Newport News YMCA and the Virginia Opera. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he enjoyed volunteering as a remedial reading tutor for Newport News Public Schools. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Maureen Smyth Sallade; their three children, daughter Linda Kay Madler and her husband Mark, son Raymond Bruce Sallade and his wife Julie Cox Sallade, all of Newport News; son Ross Edwin Sallade and his wife Heather Means Sallade of Raleigh, NC; and daughter-in-law LeeAnne Venturino Sallade of Christiansburg, VA. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren who affectionately called him "Grumpa." Dick enjoyed a number of outdoor pursuits including tennis, snow skiing, golf, sailing, fishing and hunting. A hunting trip was deemed successful if his not so faithful canine companion Whiskey could be located by the end of the day, and a sailboat race was considered a win if the spinnaker was raised correctly and no children fell overboard. Dick and Maureen enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with friends. Dick will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

In Memoriam December - January
BYRD H. S AVILLE, JR .
NOVEMBER 21, 1931 – DECEMBER 24, 2023 Byrd was born in Atlanta, GA. on November 21, 1931. Forced to leave home permanently at age nine, he grew up in Dahlonega, GA, under the care of Hayley E. Montague, a retired director of the Georgia State YMCA. Byrd served as President of the school student body during his junior year of high school and excelled at basketball, baseball, and English literature. Byrd entered the Navy at age 17, serving in the Pacific during the Korean War. He trained as a radar operator and served aboard the USS Requin, the Navy’s first radar picket submarine. Byrd left the Navy after meeting Judith Ann Bloomgren to marry in April 1953. Judy and Byrd lived after that on the Peninsula, first on Back Creek in Hampton, then for nearly 60 years in the Hidenwood section of Newport News. Byrd began his career with GMAC but quickly moved to Suttle Motor Corporation, where he met his longtime mentor and friend, George Suttle. In 1961, Byrd entered the real estate industry, joining Harrison & Lear Realtors, where he remained active for 50 years. At Harrison & Lear, Byrd initially sold single-family homes but soon moved into commercial brokerage, specializing in complex land assemblage for national retailers and local investors. He was also a general partner in various Harrison & Lear-sponsored residential and commercial development projects. Byrd was active in the community, serving a variety of organizations, including the United Way, where he Chaired the first annual campaign on the Peninsula to achieve $1 million in contributions. He was also a member and later Chair of the Regional Redevelopment & House Authority, a member of the Virginia Peninsula Economic Development Council, and a member of the Board of Riverside Hospital System’s rehabilitation operating unit and later Riverside Hospital System. He was also a Board member of Newport News Saving Bank, where he fought for change during the Savings and loan crisis. Byrd generously contributed time and money to supporting his favorite local elected representatives. Byrd was a competitive sportsman throughout his life. In the 1970s, he was widely recognized as a leading sailboat racer on the lower Chesapeake Bay and was the inaugural winner of the Blackbeard Trophy awarded by Hampton Yacht Club. He won or placed in dozens of one-design regattas and was sought after by owners to skipper larger racing yachts. Byrd snow skied for forty years on mountains throughout the American West and regularly participated in amateur NASCAR racing events, repairing and tuning his own equipment. At age 50, Byrd took up golf in earnest, eventually achieving a single-digit handicap quickly and playing and winning his flight in tournaments throughout the year. Finally, at age 60, Byrd became an accomplished sailplane pilot, flying his own high-performance glider until he was nearly 80. He also spent time hunting and fishing, even reloading his own shotgun shells. Byrd belonged to Warwick Yacht Club, Hampton Yacht Club, and James River Country Club, where he encouraged (some say harassed) the Greens Committee to improve playing conditions. He was also a longtime member of Newport News Rotary, the Hampton Roads German Club, and multiple bible study groups. In more recent times, Byrd became an active member of the United States Submarine Veterans Association, promoting the national visibility of his old boat, the Requin, on display at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh. Faith was central in Byrd’s life, and he was a member of the Hidenwood Presbyterian and later the First Presbyterian Church. The reverend Walter Kennedy was a force in Byrd’s life, and he lived in the belief of Walter’s Irish benediction:
