Fellow* Magazine is an online publication created and produced by a real-life working designer seeking to deliver the side of life filled with beauty and style to everyone - not just a select few. Fellow explores a life well-lived regardless of geographic location, financial aptitude, or social affiliation - all without the air of elitism found in other design or shelter magazines. Our contributors include design enthusiasts from all walks of life - because at the core of Fellow* - we believe a life filled with beauty and style should be attainable by all.

I believe that everyone deserves a life infused with beauty and style. I often encourage my clients to be bold and embrace color. Far too often I believe that people are genuinely desirous of color but are simply afraid to make a commitment to something that they may think is not the safest choice. To these clients I say, Pish-Posh to neutrality! After all, it is only a gallon or two of paint, right? But I have a confession to make: I live mostly in a world of white. My walls (after testing seven minutely different shades) are the perfect white (powdered snow), all of my linens (a mix of high-end Italian linens and bargain basement finds) are white, and my dishware (vintage Bauhaus and modern-day porcelain) is white. I even have an entire drawer dedicated to napkins in an array of sizes; every single one of them is white. I am the poster child for all things white! Why do I love white the way I do? I believe for me it comes down to this: At the end of the day - barraged by infinite sources of stimulus - I enjoy coming home and wrapping myself in a cocoon of peaceful, tranquil, white. It has this magical, calming, effect on my psyche. It's as if I live inside one big nerve pill. This isn't to say that I dislike color. On the contrary, I love color. Buttery yellow and silvery lilac are my current favorites. In my kitchen alone I have had green cabinets, black cabinets, turquoise cabinets, and even Hermes orange cabinets. (Yes, I had the box color-matched) But each and every time I finished painting them the color du jour, I sat back and stared dissatisfied. Looking back, I think somewhere in my head I believed that in order to truly be an "individual" and have "my own style", that somewhere in the equation I needed to have something unmistakably "James" that said This is who I am. Why I settled on turquoise cabinets is beyond me. In the second issue of Fellow*, we bring together not only bold, bright, and colorful products, but also the people whose keen understanding of looking differently at things resulted in pure perfection. From Karen Combs, who creates stunning wall coverings by harmoniously marrying themes that seem poles apart, to Michael McHale, who creates glimmering light fixtures with frames that are quite unexpected, to Jamie Drake, who can conjure up a space so beautifully vibrant that you know he sees things differently than the rest. And who could forget Torryne Choate, whose foresight to see possibility in newsprint landed her an esteemed clientele. We can look to Bunny Williams' wisdom in her debut advice column for Elle Decor in February 2001, where on the topic of decorating one's home she says "Stop worrying for a moment and take a hard look at what you like, how you live, and how you want your house to feel. In other words, get to work on your style first.� After all of my color trials and tribulations I have settled, happily, into my world of white bliss. It turns out that I really didn't need kitchen cabinets that screamed "look at me". The reality of the situation is simply, that I needed to look differently at the definition of myself and my style. I invite you to do the same.

Writer Erin Loechner launched award-winning blog Design for Mankind in mid-2007 in an attempt to bring light to the inspiration found in today's creative culture. Through photography, product design, style and craft, Erin is dedicated to showcasing the talents of the emerging art and design community. Although she thoroughly enjoys her work, she admits to not possessing a single creative bone in her body! décor file: from the inspiration pile Bunny’s Beat debuted in the Feburary/March 2001 issue of Elle Décor and explored the issue of personal style based upon wisdom from Bunny Williams. In the beginning passages of deciding on how to decorate one’s space Bunny states: “Stop worrying for a moment and take a hard look at what you like, how you live, and how you want your house to feel. In other words, get to work on your style first.” We could not agree more. Before you ask your decorator what he or she thinks is right for your space you must know what is right for you. How can your designer bring forth your vision and execute it to perfection if you have not connected to what that vision is in the first place? Bunny continues on to offer suggestions on where to find inspirations and muses for your personal style. Travel. Go to Museums. Visit a showroom or two. Look in your own closet at the very least.How you dress your body is a good indication of how your room might express itself. In the end Bunny says, “There are no firm rules about what goes together and what is right or wrong- if there were every room would look alike”. That would be so boring.

Let’s face it,we have ALL watched Martha Stewart and at one point or another and rolled our eyes in condescending disbelief as if to say “yeah, right”. We, at least, are only distant viewers of Martha’s penchant for perfection but imagine what it must be like for those closest to the queen of Omnimedia? Whatever, Martha!, on Fine Living Network, answers this question and more as Alexis Stewart (Martha’s daughter) and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt (daughter of Charles Koppelman, executive chairman of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia) say what is on the tip of everyone’s tongue as they watch vintage episodes of Martha Stewart Living. Commenting on everything from Martha’s flirtatious moments during a blow-out with Frederick Fekkai to the ubiquitous use of only “a few simple ingredients” Jennifer and Alex offer up candid and brutally honest entertainment. We discovered this gem on our way to meet a new upholsterer in Silver Lake’s Sunset Junction. It was the tissue paper balls that piqued our interest and drew us in but it was the sophisticated mix of modern, vintage, and worldly goods that kept us hanging out for hours. Founded by prop stylist and art director Michelle Weaver, and her partner Chelsea Iovino, an L.A. based veteran fashion stylist, Mercado’s carefully edited assortment reflects their unique point of view and everything is something that they would happily purchase for friends, family, or themselves. We love that Mercado not only offers chic. fashion forward, home goods and accessories- available at every price point (our love of the high/low mix)- but whether you’re there to pick up a hand-printed notecard or one of their fantastically reworked vintage furnishings your shopping experience will be pure pleasure without any of the pretense that can be commonly found in other boutiques of the same caliber. Inspired style * What can we say about Nana other than we totally dig her style. We love her combination of color and textures that say she is playful and spirited. From her beaded bracelet, to her knitted sleeves we adore all the little details that infuse Nana’s ensemble with vivid personality. She is whimsical and modern at the same time and the incorporation of charcoal gray tell us she is a little classic at her core. We take our cues from Nana for her dining room, a place where she can be interactive with her guests and really showcase the best of style and personality. crazy for rococo Artist Karen Combs once holed herself up in her studio for two straight months. (The impetus came to her after falling in love with a Chinese scroll painting at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.) When Karen emerged the result was a fifty-foot paper scroll of her own design and a new mantra of repetition, rhythm, and color. This was the beginnings of NAMA ROCOCO, a hand-made artisan offering of bold, beautiful, and sensuous wallpapers that ebb and flow like the notes in a symphony. It’s an apt description because Karen believes that wallpaper, certainly, can be musical and her passion for all thing hand-made is a key element that she infuses into her daily life. Just like the seemingly dichotomous name, NAMA ROCOCO (Nama is Japanese for raw) Karen likes to play with things that may at first seem disparate but in the end she marries them into stunning harmony. Certainly, these are not for the faint of heart nor the meek but if you are anything like us and can devour beauty for breakfast then, my fellow* friends, these beauties are for you!

How many times have we come across a wallcovering that we just fell in love with and HAD to have, only to find that the minimum order was a trillion yards or umpteen double rolls. SHINE WITH MICHAEL McHALE

When you first lay eyes upon the creations of Michael McHale the message is clear: this is glamour. Major. Dripping with the finest Swarovski crystals and glimmering just right you instantly become entranced and almost miss the real genius these fixtures hold. Almost. McHale chandeliers use materials that you wouldn’t associate with a high-end product. His creations utilize ordinary materials such as brass pipes, plumbing fittings and even low wattage refrigerator bulbs. Most of these materials come with a patina that reminds you of the many years of use these materials must have endured and, whenever possible, McHale makes sure that these time-worn gems are reclaimed, coming from various sources like the Katrina building sites in Mississippi and Louisiana. Think of McHale chandeliers as industrial glam with a soul. Though Michael has no formal training in art or design (He’s a former entertainment lawyer go figure!) he has a his eye on the bigger picture and shares a philosophy that we whole heartedly believe in. Michael explains: “ To have a chandelier that communicates glamour and elegance, but is also, upon second glance constructed out of relatively ordinary materials…that is very compelling, I think. The message is that beauty is all around us: in hardware stores, in basements, everywhere. getting to know you When it was clear that the October issue of fellow* was going to incorporate a full dose of color, one great designer instantly came to mind, Jamie Drake. Inducted in 2003 to Interior Design’s Interior Designer Hall of Fame, the New York based designer is the man behind some of the most unabashedly bold and vibrant interiors in the country. Drake uses color fearlessly and imbues his spaces with sophisticated style that is super chic and livable. This melding of unusual colors, style and function is certainly just one of the aspects that draws a roster of clients that include Madonna and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. We think that if you want to learn a thing or two about being bold, staying true to yourself and perhaps something about color then Drake is your man. This is getting to know you, Jamie Drake.
jamie drake Where do you look for inspiration? Under, over, above and below. Everywhere! Inspiration is right in front of me, and lurking in hidden corners of life. Who do you consider a STYLE MAKER? Beyonce, John Saladino, Ralph Rucci, Zaha Hadid, Karl Lagerfeld Describe a typical Sunday Morning. I usually wake up a whopping half hour later than usual. Make the coffee, yawn, shower, eat a bagel and dive into the New York Times and New York Post. What songs would we find on your ipod? Motown, dance party, a little hip-hop, disco, tons of remixes and an army of divas! What magazines are you currently reading? I read magazines voraciously. Every month I devour Elle Décor, Met Home, Interior Design, Veranda, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, The World of Interiors, K&BB, W, Vogue, HC&G, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, Westchester Cottages & Gardens, New York Spaces, Avenue, Gotham, Traditional Home, Metropolis, Wallpaper, etc….

What everyday object could you not live without? My toothbrush. What everyday object do you want to completely overhaul? My Blackberry. Pencil or Pen? What kind. Pen. Black Sanford Uni-ball Micro. What is your most cherished possession? My sense of optimism. Besides sight which sense is most important? Hearing. What are three adjectives that describe where you are today either personally or professionally. Optimistic, realistic, hedonistic. What are three things you feel you need to work on? My smoking (I’m 2 weeks without, sort of, as I type), my ability to calm my brain from overload and working out regularly. Have you ever lost the passion to create and if so when, how, what? How did you get it back? Never lost it….ever. For someone considering going out on their own to follow their passion what words of advice can you offer? Stay as true to your vision as possible. The rent may be due, and sometimes compromise is inevitable, but the more in target you remain, the more it will pay off in the long run. With regard to your designs what is one “I can’t believe I actually did that” moment. Completing the renovation, restoration and redecoration of Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City’s Mayors, in 3 ! months. A truly miraculous completion of a complex project. Is good design innate or can it be taught? Taste is innate, design can be taught. PR or Advertising? PR In one sentence describe your style. I create bold, polished, intellectually curious spaces. That description applies to my clients’ personalities as well.

A designer is…fill in the blank. A magician who creates wonderful experiences. If you could design a room for any person living or past who would it be and what room would you choose? I would choose to create a dressing room for Elsa Schiaparelli, large enough for her to entertain in. If Heaven were only one room what would that room be and what style would it have? I’ve always imagined heaven to be a vast supper club, tiered to infinity, with swell people all dressed up. All my friends and family who have already departed are there to greet me. What is a project you still want to do? The White House. The White House called and said they want to change the color . What would you choose? Why choose only one. With today’s LED technologically, it could be different every evening, reflecting America’s great diversity. If you were to curate a museum what artists would we find? A diverse selection from Koons to krazy, Raphael to Hirst, icons to Cindy Sherman

I am a big believer in living a well-lived life –and at any budget or position. What are a few key elements for you that equal a well-lived life? Delicious food, great bedding, fascinating vacations, good friends, good times…these are the elements of a well lived life to me.
What are three small indulgences that make you feel like you are living the good life? New shoes, a haircut every 10 days, being able to dine out where I want. For you, what is “effortlessly chic”? Sable and denim Coffee or tea? How is it prepared? Coffee, auto drip or press. Cloth napkin or paper napkin? Or no napkin? Dare I say, paper towel? Never a paper towel!!! Cloth, always. Dinnerware. What kind? A revolving assortment including antique Limoges, Russian tsarist silver gilt, Crate & Barrel, and Dansk What’s the perfect floral arrangement for your dinner table? A mass of low garden roses in full bloom, to the point that the petals will drop by morning.

Clients and art-is it truly a personal decision? It can be, or it can be art-directed by the designer, selecting pieces that seem appropriate for the client as well as the mis-en-scene. You have to choose another passion to follow. What would it be? Criminal lawyer. Either defense or prosecution. I guess I have a Law and Order fantasy. If you had to live in a color for the rest of time what would that be? Rainbow‌. Can you offer a few essential tips on working with color?

Parameters: Incorporate Christine’s tastes within a space that is temporarily hers while keeping within the owner’s comfort level. Work with a very tight budget. Ultimately, make someone else’s home feel like her own.

THE SOLUTION: When I first set my eyes upon Christine’s space, I will admit that I recognized that this was going to be a challenge. Christine’s apartment had blue walls that we could not repaint and she had some of the owner’s furniture pieces that needed to be put into the mix. Christine told me that she liked a lot of color, a vintage vibe and that she also wanted some modern touches. I spied a painting on her wall, yellow flowers, and that started the ball rolling. The first order of business was to rework the apartment’s floor plan and create better flow. Simultaneously, this also allowed us to create a focal wall in which to display Christine’s quirky art collection. We relocated the television and lowered it so that it wasn’t the first thing that caught your eye upon entering the apartment. The next step, after we had the space plan complete, was to fill in the gaps and procure the missing details that would pull it all together. Knowing that Christine was on a tight budget, I suggested that the best bang for her buck was to pay for a few hours of my time and accompany me to two or three places where I knew we were certain to find the things we needed. With our plan in hand we went shopping. We found the black and white stripe sofa first and fell in love. Next we located the vintage wood frame chair and brass table and so on. We hit a few fabric stores, some more flea markets and before you knew it we had all the elements we needed to put Christine’s spin on the place. With a little sweat equity, a well devised plan , and a designer’s eye, we have given Christine a little Room Service*. 42

We think that in order to be effortlessly chic you should pay attention to the small details. In our September issue, we introduced you to a little something we call a social card: a fail proof way to make a fabulous first impression because there’s nothing chic about a lackluster introduction. A personalized note card takes that perfect impression you set and extends it beyond the first hello. Think of it as the perfect follow up and another opportunity to express your individuality and style. After all, we’re all about making you the best you can be and not some carbon copy trend follower. Of course, we’d opt for something letterpress (our fav!) but any simple, high quality stationary will do. Remember to keep it blank on the inside because you never know what occasion you may encounter. Our tip is to always keep a few handy (we keep a few in the car, in our briefcase, and yes, even our gym bag) because there is no time like the present to write a quick personal note and send it on its way. Imagine after that first interview, stopping in the lobby for a few moments and leaving a lovely note card with the receptionist! You save time, avoid the possibility of forgetting someone’s name, or worse, not sending one all together. You get our drift. Whatever the reason and no matter the occasion, this is one little tool you should never be without.`

take note folks Gone are the days when sending a personal note or thank you was second nature and more of a habit than a chore. Of course, this was well before these days of email and instant messengers. Nowadays, you no longer send your betrothed a scintilating letter of amore. Instead, the modern day love letter is an abridged jumble of letters and numbers that we call text. It might look something like this: Uve won my luv. I luv u. Ur on my mind 24/7. Romantic, isn’t it? We don’t think so. Here are a few simple guidelines from Haute Note for handling most any card giving situation: In General: !It's a good idea to keep a variety of blank cards on hand. Timing is key, so you want to make sure you've always got a card when you need one. Thank You Notes: Who: Whenever someone does something special, out of the ordinary or unexpected (like a favour, dinner party, or job interview), send a thank-you card. WHEN: Try to send it within 24-hours. That way, you won't forget and the gesture will stay relevant. WHAT: Keep it short and sweet (two or three sentences) and adjust the formality of your tone to suit the recipient. Here's a sample format: 1.
Start specifically with "Thank you for [gesture].
2.
Follow up with a brief, related sentence: for example, how much the gesture means to you.
3.
Conclude by looking ahead to the future: what you plan to do with the gift, how you look forward to seeing them etc.
4.
Sign-off with a closing that suits the context (love, sincerely, kind regards, all the best), seal it up and send it off!

wine glasses Object lesson * As far back as 50 A.D. there is evidence that glass was used as a vessel for drinking libations. It’s even said that vessels for drinking wine have been around as long as wine itself, with the earliest vessels being made of clay. Today, glassware and crystal are our top choices when choosing stemware .With a plethora of silhouettes to choose from it can seem like a difficult choice to select the right wine glass. At Fellow*, we believe that you should always put your best foot forward and select a style appeals to you. One that expresses your point of view. Having decided on a personal preference there are a few technical things to keep in mind. Select a glass whose bowl is large enough to let you swirl the wine around and bring out the wine’s essence. The foot should be wide and sturdy enough to support a bowl that is half full. ( They say this is the maximum amount of wine that should be poured. Who knew?) couscous for any occasion Couscous may seem like one of those dishes that should be reserved for special occasions or unusual meals. Traditionally, couscous can be laborious to prepare but today there are many quick-cooking versions and it is even available in whole wheat. In less than ten minutes it is ready serve and can be enjoyed either hot or cold. We give you only one version but you can take this simple recipe and cater it to any meal. Versatile and yummy, you will think twice about making rice ever again.
easy pleasing* strawberry & feta mesclun salad with honey vinaigrette As beautiful as it is delicious, this Mediterranean style salad is a refreshing break from your ho-hum usual. Drizzled with an amazing honey vinaigrette your taste buds will be begging for more.
grilled chili lamb chops with quince Sweet and spicy, these chili lamb chops glistening with a super easy quince glaze elevate your meal to heavenly heights. This dish, truly, is mere minutes in the making.

the recipes crispy rosemary tomatoes couscous with shallots, parsley & pignolias 1 cup couscous 1/4 cup pignolias (pine nuts) 1 large shallot, chopped 1 garlic clove, grated 1 cup of chicken broth 1 tablespoons of olive oil pat of butter flat leaf parsley, chopped In a large, dry, sauce pan toast pine nuts until golden brown and set aside. In the same pan sautĂŠ chopped shallots in olive oil and butter until translucent. Grate clove of garlic into pan. Add chicken stock to pan and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat and pour dry couscous into the pan. Stir well. Cover and let stand for 5-7 minutes. Fluff with a fork adding toasted pine nuts and parsley before serving. Salt and pepper to taste. (Try adding dried apricots, golden raisins, or cranberries for added zing.)

2 - 3 ripe red tomatoes, sliced thickly 4 tablespoons of olive oil fresh rosemary, coarsely chopped salt & pepper to taste Heat olive oil in a sautĂŠ pan over medium high heat. Strip rosemary from its stems and coarsely chop. Add rosemary to oil and cook until crispy. Transfer crispy rosemary and oil to a small dish and let cool slightly. Salt and pepper tomato slices on both sides. Add tomatoes to pan and brown on each side. Transfer tomatoes to platter and drizzle with rosemary. Serve either alone as a starter or atop couscous.
strawberry & feta mesclun salad assorted mixed greens, washed fresh ripe strawberries, chopped crumbled feta honey vinaigrette: good, quality honey with comb chopped if desired champagne vinegar or fresh lemon juice salt & pepper to taste In a large salad bowl combine lettuces, strawberries and feta. In another bowl combine champagne vinegar, honey, salt and pepper. Whisk until combined. Drizzle sparingly over salad and serve immediately. We like to kick this up a notch and sprinkle the salad with chopped honey comb.

These lamp chops could not be easier! Simply seasoned with salt, pepper, and chili flakes they are divine but we give you an elevated option for some extra frills. Our quince glazed is made with Spanish membrillo - a paste you can find at most supermarkets. For a quick starter serve membrillo along side a a hefty chunk of brie and a crusty baguette.
lamb only seems like it is difficult. grilled chili lamb chops with quince glaze 8-12 lamb chops olive oil chili pepper flakes salt & pepper to taste quince glaze: 4 table spoons membrillo (prepared quince paste) water Brush lamb chops with oil and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle each side with chili pepper. Cook in a hot frying pan or on a grill for 3-5 minutes each side (for medium) or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to platter and cover with aluminium foil. In same pan, add quince paste and mash with a fork., Add a tablespoon or two of water and heat until the membrillo becomes a shiny glaze. Drizzle or brush onto lamp chops and serve along side couscous and tomatoes. Membrillo’s texture is a little grainy so you can easily substitute apricot jam if desired.

easy pleasing* We take a breakfast staple and serve it up for a tasty evening treat. Caramelized cinnamon sugar covered brioche buns that are toasted to perfection, and then topped with classic vanilla ice cream- what could be better?
Its not just for breakfast anymore! cinnamon sugared french toast with vanilla bean ice cream 2 brioche buns sliced, thickly, into thirds 2 eggs 4 tablespoons heavy cream 1 teaspoon warm honey salt to taste cinnamon and sugar good vanilla ice cream, if desired 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Slice store bought brioche buns into thirds. Let the slices sit out until slightly dry. Preheat oven to 375 In a bowl, combine ingredients and whisk until smooth. Combine cinnamon and sugar on a separate plate Brush brioche with egg mixture or dip slices into egg mixture for a few seconds. The brioche will absorb the liquid quickly so be careful not to soak the bread slices or your bread will become soggy and fall apart. Coat each side of the brioche slices with the cinnamon sugar and place two at a time into a hot, buttered, pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side until the sugar begins to bubble and brown. Transfer slices to a cookie sheet with a cooling rack. Sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar and place cookie sheet into heated oven for 5 minutes. *We placed our slices under the broiler for an additional minute to caramelize the sugar even more!

Instantly, we were enamored with the brilliant wallcoverings of Nama Rococo. Mesmerized by their vibrant colors and bold graphics,we were curious to know more about Karen Combs, the creative force behind these wallpapers. We asked Karen a thing or two about inspiration, following your dreams, what she likes to do on her during her down time and the details of what makes her the happiest and why she is leading a life well-lived. On creating a meaningful and inspired life: I think creating a meaningful and inspired life is all about making the basic things we do every day driving or walking to work, eating, seeing friends,wearing clothes - be pleasurable and beautiful somehow to our personal sensibilities. I don't think it's important to own a lot of stuff, but it's wonderful if we can choose (over time maybe) versions of simple everyday things which have some true meaning and beauty and soul to them. Advice on turning your passion into a business: In my experience it just takes a ton of focus and willingness to give EVERYTHING you've got to it for a few years. Also, it's important to have a really clear vision of exactly what you want to do and WHY you want to do it! Passion & Love for the project is everything! It's not so hard to find the *how* as time goes on. Where there's a will there's a way! Leap and the net will appear! When you’re not working- what occupies your time? I LOVE walking in the city. I can wander for hours and miles just taking in this and that and peoplewatching. I love cooking simple meals for a few friends. I love going to art museums, anytime, anywhere. I couldn't live without music, either live or blasting in the studio while I work. I am interested in history & music from the past, but am also always curious about what is happening right this minute.

1. Organic produce from local Farmer's Market. My g favorite producer from Union Square Greenmarket in NYC is BOBOLINK Dairy. Their cheddar cheese and wood fired breads are like wholesome manna sent from the Gods.

2. A simple cast iron frying pan! In my mind the cast iron pan is the king of all kitchenware. 3. Art & Design books. I am currently on a contemporary Chinese Art & Design jag. 4. Plain white typing paper & a clipboard. I spend hours every week writing and drawing and doodling and planning... always using plain white typing paper & a black pen. it's one of my greatest pleasures! 5. STEAM BATHS! My all-time favorite is the LIQUIDROM in Berlin. 6. Jamin Puech handbags. If only I had more of these! 7. I think everyone should own at least one amazing, beautiful and super-comfortable chair. My current favorite is a white leather authentic Karuselli Lounge Chair designed by Yrjo Kukkapuro in 1964.

8. My favorite flower is a white peony - Peonies feel so exotic and luxurious. 9. COLOR! For $30 and a bit of courage anyone can change their world by painting a wall or two. Color is so incredibly powerful & magnificent if done right - chosen with LOVE and passion. 10. Church Bells (preferably in Venice) and birds singing in the morning in the countryside.
