NEW STORIES

THE CALILE

An evolving precinct

Setting a new standard in hotel design

– The Malouf family’s vision for James Street has led to a remarkable transformation of the area. Their first indelible stamp on the precinct came with the opening of the pioneering James St Market in 2002. Since then, the family’s careful curation of the retail presentation and mix in the area has been ongoing, including a streetscape upgrade that coincided with the opening of the Pottery Barn building in 2015. Continuing to sculpt James Street, the Malouf family is now undertaking its most ambitious project within the precinct, THE CALILE hotel. Set to open in spring 2018, THE CALILE will be a significant and architecturally striking addition to the precinct, delivering a premium destination of shops, restaurants and 178 luxury guest rooms. The design will cultivate a sophisticated yet casual atmosphere, creating an ‘urban resort’ for the city that aspires to break the mould and raise the bar both locally and nationally. The concept grew from a desire to deliver a unique hotel experience that celebrates Brisbane and the subtropical climate the city enjoys. Great care and consideration has been taken with every aspect and feature of the development. The name too has been carefully chosen. THE CALILE is a name of historical significance to the Malouf family and its past generations, and is one that will continue to define the evolution of the James Street story.

SAGE HOTEL

Department store shopping gets a boutique makeover

A boutique hotel inviting guests to live like locals

An iconic Australian retailer, David Jones is the newest addition to James Street’s ever-growing retail mix. The next-generation concept store is only the second of its kind in Australia and is designed to reflect the unique spirit and energy of James Street.

For the Sage Hotel owners, the James Street precinct provided the perfect location for their first Brisbane venture. Created by the international SilverNeedle Hospitality Group, this vibrant hotel invites guests to live like locals when they stay on James Street.

Every element of the store has been tailored to the precinct, including the staff, operating hours and involvement with the local community. The team is led by Brisbane-born Store Manager Tiffany Hall, who has collaborated with David Jones’ head office to create this unique localised offering.

Collaborations with local purveyors including Mokum design, Kit And Ace, Dinosaur Designs, Newstead Brewing Co. and Jocelyn’s Provisions add a distinctly local flavour to the new locale.

The fashion-forward boutique has a smaller footprint than other David Jones locations, with a curated product range and number of specialised in-store services. It features a carefully chosen selection of men’s and women’s fashion as well as beauty and accessory brands. The range is split over four levels, with the store’s design developed to complement the unique aesthetic and atmosphere of James Street. Supplementing this discerning edit of goods, a Click and Collect service gives shoppers access to products from David Jones’ wider collections. This will enable customers to shop online and collect their order from the James Street store the next day. A complimentary personal shopping suite with style advisors is available and bookings can be made online or in store. Shoppers can also take advantage of a range of one-on-one beauty services.

www.davidjones.com.au

Nestled beside the historical QA Hotel, Sage Hotel offers 93 boutique rooms, with a cafe, cellar and deli in the lobby providing provisions to go. From here, guests can enjoy the lifestyle of the James Street area – start with a morning swim at the iconic Fortitude Valley pool followed by a hit of coffee and breakfast at one of the precinct’s cafes, where professionals and early risers alike enjoy seasonal produce and banter from the characters behind the counter. After breakfast, choose from several art galleries to visit or enjoy a range of home and lifestyle offerings from the many retailers and boutiques on Sage Hotel’s doorstep. Afternoons on James Street are another favourite among locals, as dappled sunlight filters through the boulevard of trees and everyone slows down again for a drink to welcome the evening. Brisbane has long been regarded as having an easy and relaxed pace of life, and this lifestyle is embodied at this carefully curated hotel.
