Campaign Insider Winter 2018

T

he University of Jamestown, through the generosity of donors like you, began Opening Doors Transforming Lives, a 5-year Comprehensive Campaign in July 2014. The goal has been—and continues to be—enhancing three important areas, thus insuring the future of the University: Academic Excellence, Student Life Enrichment, and Affordability for All Students. With an ambitious goal of raising 60 million dollars in five years, our alumni and friends of the University have almost met that goal in 3.5 years! We are ever-grateful. As we enter the final phase of the Campaign, we ask you to consider how you may impact the future of the University of Jamestown. Gifts to the Endowment make a strong statement that you believe in the future and in our mission: University of Jamestown is a community dedicated to the development of wholeness in our students. We adhere to a curriculum of academic excellence which balances the ideals of the liberal arts tradition and sound professional preparation. Our Christian tradition encourages an atmosphere of self-discipline, responsibility, and concern for the continuing growth of the individual. Endowment gifts demonstrate faith in the future of the University of Jamestown, and ensure a legacy that lives on in perpetuity.

“Although I was a teacher, as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to view nurses as angels on earth. It is my hope that providing scholarships to those wishing to become registered nurses will lighten their financial burdens, which will in turn enable more students to become nurses here at the University of Jamestown.” Mary Newman

Endowment

The University of Jamestown’s Endowment has grown to more than $35 million. This money is invested; the principal may never be used, only the interest. Our goal is to raise over $15 million more for the Endowment. Gifts in support of UJ’s Endowment may be given in cash, through stock transfers, gifts of grain, and property, through one’s will, by naming the University as a beneficiary in an insurance policy, or via other forms of deferred giving. This list is not all-inclusive, but is meant to encourage donors like you to consider creative ways in which you may create your legacy at UJ. Some of the areas that have been identified as needs for Endowment include, but are not limited to: ³³ Scholarships

³³ Faculty Research Fellowships

³³ Buildings and Equipment

³³ Name Your Own Fellowship

³³ Faculty Development

³³ Undergraduate Research Fellowship / Summer Stipends for Students

³³ Character in Leadership, including Fall Conference Speaker Series and Student Service Projects ³³ Arts and Religion ³³ Chaplaincy

³³ Endowed Department Chairs in Biology, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Education, Engineering, Kinesiology, and Nursing

The Impact of Giving to UJ’s Endowment “My calling in life has always been to help and heal others in any way I can. This is why I wanted to come to Jamestown for school. The scholarship I received is a blessing that will help me pursue my calling and dream of being a physical therapist. I couldn’t accomplish my dream without this blessing. Thank you for allowing me to chase my dreams.” Ryan Dietz ‘21, Morris, MN

“Receiving the Wilson Scholarship allowed me to be more involved in campus activities, because I didn’t have to work during the school year. It allowed for less stress and more choices during my years here at UJ. It helped me to choose UJ, which I now know (without any doubt) that it was the right decision for me. Being able to finish my undergrad without student loans will also allow me to focus on aspects of grad school other than cost.” Alyson Freitag ‘18, Elko, NV

“In retrospect, my time at the University of Jamestown had a greater effect on my life than any other period. It provided a strong Liberal Arts education, and it was then that I met my wife. It introduced me to new ways of thinking, and it taught me the value of Endowed Scholarships provided by people I did not know. The scholarships were absolutely necessary. I find it greatly rewarding to help people I may never meet in getting their education.” Elmer Schindel ’63 Board of Trustees and Campaign Steering Committee Co-Chair

How your support of UJ’s Endowment has helped, so far: • Established over 350 named endowed scholarships for students • Provided support of the Character in Leadership Program • Established a bequest in support of a future Endowed Technology Chair

The Caldwell Family

“Although giving towards a building, department, or athletic team is important; it is sometimes easy to forget that without the students the gifts would be pointless. Now that we have graduated, we understand the importance of doing our part as alumni to keep tuition affordable. We love that a gift to the University of Jamestown’s Endowment does precisely this. Our contributions continue to advance the mission that made us all proud to wear orange and give others the chance to join the Jimmie Nation!”

—Logan ’14 and Annika ’15 Caldwell

“Having grown up in Jamestown and being an alumna of the University, I know the importance of the Harold Newman Arena to both our campus and our community. I felt it was important that we plan for future needs of the Arena through an endowment dedicated to those needs.” —Tena Vedvig Lawrence ’81, M.A.L. ’17
