Montgomery elected mayor New Council and mayor to be sworn in Dec. 19 BY CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com With all precincts reporting following the Nov. 7 municipal election, unofficial results show Jamestown voters have elected the town’s first female mayor. Lynn Montgomery bested current Mayor Keith Volz, garnering 43.63 percent of the votes to Volz 34.95 percent. Write-in candidates, which included Robert Frederick, amassed 21.42 of the vote. The Oct. 10 mayoral primary

election was as tight as it could get. Only five votes separated the top and bottom votegetters, with Montgomery and Volz tied with 33.73 percent of the vote. Frederick received 32.54 percent. There is no municipal primary runoff, but Frederick decided to run as a writein candidate. Council members elected are Martha Stafford Wolfe (24.44 percent), Rebecca Mann Rayborn (19.48 percent), Georgia Nixon (17.63 percent) and John Capes (17.07 percent). Current council member Lawrence Straughn placed

fifth with 16.87 percent, Pete Resh garnered 4.19 percent and write-in votes tallied 0.32 percent. With Montgomery leaving the Town Council for the mayor’s position, Straughn losing his reelection bid and current Councilmember Billy Ragsdale not seeking re-election, the new council will be composed of one current councilmember and three newcomers, although Wolfe was a town employee for 21 years and knows the issues facing the council. “I’m very humbled by the support I received,” Montgomery said.

“I look forward to working with the council to build upon our successes and explore new opportunities to enhance the quality of life for Jamestown’s citizens.” Newly-elected councilmembers echoed Montgomery’s statement. “I am so very honored to have been elected to represent the citizens of Jamestown for my sixth term,” said Nixon. “I am looking forward to working with the new members to continue to preserve our historical community while SEE MAYOR, PAGE 3

Council to discuss solar panels, sidewalks BY CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com The Jamestown Town Council will meet Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. One piece of old business is on the agenda: to consider approving the town’s Personnel Policy. A scheduled discussion and approval was tabled at the Oct. 17 Council meeting to allow council members time to scrutinize the 114-page document. The policy was originally discussed at the December 2016 meeting and tabled until the January 2017 meeting. Howev-

er, it was not on the January agenda and, thus, has not been discussed since December 2016. Under new business, the Council will consider approving a donation from Renu Energy Solutions for the installation of solar panels at Wrenn Miller Park. The Council will also consider approving the NCDOT contract for the Oakdale Road pedestrian improvements. Finance Director Judy Gallman will present the audit report for fiscal year 2016-17. The public is invited to attend the Town Council meeting.

Flagpole dedication ceremony planned BY CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com The Nov. 6 Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting was full of updates regarding Jamestown Park. The Committee approved a plaque to be placed in the renovated clubhouse noting not only work done on the clubhouse but on the golf course, which reopened for play Labor Day weekend 2016. The plaque noted the Sept. 2, 2016 dedication and lists Town Council members, Park Superintendent John Crowe and volunteers who served on a committee for the renovation. Committee members were Shanna Moore, Robert Pickett, Bob Wilson, Leonora Ingle, Don Douglass, Joyce Volz, Martha Wolfe, Larry Boswell, Pam McCoy, Ben Saunders

and Elisabeth Sandberg. The Town is planning a dedication ceremony Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. for the flagpole, which has been placed at the entrance to Jamestown Park. The flagpole was made possible through donations from the Civitan and Rotary clubs of Jamestown. A plaque in memory of Civitan Burry “Chip” Hicks and Rotarian Charles Dowdy has been placed near the flagpole and these men will be honored at the dedication ceremony. Ross Sanderlin reported that rentals at the clubhouse are on the rise and that some old kitchen equipment has been replaced. A new website for the golf course will launch in a couple of months. Sanderlin also said that in the months the golf course has been open since renovation, play has increased about 36 percent.

Carr team completes challenge to raise funds for Make-A-Wish BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER Norma@normabdennis.com When Kevin Carr agreed to take the Trailblaze Challenge, a 28.3mile walk to raise funds for MakeA-Wish of Central and Western North Carolina, little did he realize the impact the challenge would have on him. “I am ready to do it again,” the Haynes-Inman Education Center principal said. “It was really inspiring. There is a walk each spring and fall and I am just trying to decide which time I would want to do it.” Carr, his son Casey and younger daughter Tara participated in this

year’s fall walk held on Oct. 14. To prepare for the event, Kerr joined others in a series of practice walks, gradually increasing the miles hiked with each one. The actual Challenge trail ran from Upper Whitehall Falls, N.C., to Oconee, S.C. The hike is meant to be a cooperative event and not a competition. Participants are limited to 100 and each is required to raise a minimum of $2,500, which is used to help grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. Carr, Casey and Tara raised more than $7,600. “I think I was more worried about raising the funds than completing

the walk,” Carr said. “But when I started telling the story about the challenge, I was surprised to see how many people wanted to give. It was neat to see the generosity of so many people.” One community donor pledged 10 cents per mile for every mile walked before the day of the Challenge by students, teachers and staff at Haynes-Inman and CJ Greene Education Center. The group collectively walked 4,300 miles and the donor presented a check for $500 to Make-A-Wish in their honor. “The average wish costs $6,000,” Carr said. “Our team earned more SEE CARR, PAGE 3

Pennybyrn celebrates 70 years of caring It began with the desire of five Catholic sisters from the United Kingdom to open a hospital in America. They were partly inspired by the support and kindness shown to them by the American soldiers in Europe during World War II. Instead of a

hospital, however, that dream manifested itself in the form of a rehabilitation facility established in High Point for those needing extra care following hospitalization. When licensed as a nursing home in the 1950, it became known as Maryfield. On Nov. 15, the staff and residents at Pennybyrn at Maryfield are celebrating 70 SEE PENNY, PAGE 2

Thanksgiving BY CAROL REED JAMESTOWN LIBRARY With Thanksgiving just around the corner, let’s explore some books on the topic. Cookbooks, children’s books, and memoirs round out my selections. The Beach House Cookbook: Easy Breezy Recipes with a Southern Accent, Mary Kay Andrews - The author has a chapter on Thanksgiving at the beach. It includes recipes for her sister-inlaw’s chicken enchilada dip, her own roasted turkey, her boozy sweet potato soufflé, and her son’s pumpkin pies, among other mouth-watering side dishes. Andrews usually includes lots of food in her novels. A recent book was called The Weekenders, a story about a woman who arrives at her beach house only to discover that the bank has foreclosed on it. There are cocktail parties and crab boils, along with island secrets to unravel. Picnic in Provence: A Memoir with Recipes, Elizabeth Bard - This book is set in France and filled with humor. A young couple in Provence opens an ice cream shop, experimenting with

odd flavors like saffron, sheep’s milk yogurt, and olive oil. When Thanksgiving approaches, the menu also becomes weird. Think about cooking a salt cod after soaking it in the toilet tank. That way water runs over it constantly and washes out the salt. I don’t want salt cod no matter how it is cooked, but the toilet tank??? The Great Thanksgiving Escape, Mark Fearing - This picture book explores the horror children feel when all the aunts pinch their cheeks and smother them with wet kisses. Gavin and Cousin Rhonda, confined to a room with toddlers, make a break for the backyard to escape boredom at Grandma’s house during their family’s Thanksgiving Day celebration. The terrors they face include guard dogs (sleeping dachshunds) and zombies

(teens playing video games) on their way out. The illustrations are delightful. Don’t Be Such a Turkey, Nancy Krulik (Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo series) - During a class field trip to a Pilgrim village re-creation, Katie finds herself replacing an actor playing a Pilgrim. Later, when her family goes to New York City, she becomes a clown in the Thanksgiving Day parade. In this series, whenever a magic wind blows, Katie becomes another person, sometimes in another place or another time. The Wishbone Wish, Megan McDonald (Judy Moody and Stink series) - The town’s annual Turkey Trot race is coming up. Judy and Stink are training to win. Judy has decided that she is going to take home the big prize: a fat, juicy turkey. She can taste it already. Unfortunately, the turkey is raw and frozen, so the family ends up eating turkey hot dogs with beans. Amid the silly story, the young reader learns that Sarah Hale badgered several presidents until Abe Lincoln agreed to sanction a national Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving from Jamestown Library staff and volunteers!

Area Deaths & Funerals James Clyde Rayborn James Clyde Rayborn, better known by his friends as Jim or Jimmy, died Saturday November 11, 2017 surrounded with the presence and love of family. He was 85 years old. A native and lifelong resident of Guilford County, he was proud to have called Jamestown home since 1973. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julia Bettini Rayborn Thompson and Clyde Rayborn, and his esteemed stepfather, Curtis Thompson. He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Julia Sutton Rayborn, and son, Cory Rayborn, daughter-in-law Rebecca Mann Rayborn, and granddaughter Katherine Rayborn, all of Jamestown. Jim was a graduate of both Greensboro Senior High (now Grimsley) and Guilford College. He was honored to place his studies at Guilford on hold to serve in the Army during the Korean War prior to returning to complete a history degree. He was an active alumnus through his involvement with the Quaker Club and other school activities. Jim retired in 1999 as a Guilford County Magistrate. Following retirement, he greatly enjoyed travelling far and wide with Julia, as well as volunteering with the High Point Regional Hospital, ACC Hall of Champions, and the Piedmont Triad International Airport as an Ambassador. He prioritized his daily workouts and missed spending time with the early morning crowd at the Ragsdale YMCA in recent months. Above all Jim was fully dedicated to his family. He was warm, kind, and generous with everyone that he met. He possessed a dedicated spirit of justice and equity. A friend to many, he was probably best known for his playful sense of humor. Armed with a quick wit, Jim was always ready to either laugh at or provide a good joke. He has left all who knew him with fond memories. Some of his greatest passions consisted of his decades of fellowship with all at Greensboro’s St. Andrews Episcopal Church, seventy-plus years as a dedicated fan of Duke University athletics, and his lifelong appreciation for nature. As much as Jim relished taking a young Cory to football and basketball games, he loved even more having an older Cory in turn take him to those same events. Jim always delighted in bumping into players or coaches and telling them how he had been going to games longer than they – or their parents – had been alive. Jim’s biggest joy over the last two years was spending time as his granddaughter Katherine’s “Pop.” He cherished every moment he spent with her, marveling over her smile (“one glimpse and it wins your heart”), personality, and laughter. No one he came in contact with could escape hearing his latest Katherine stories or being shown his ever-growing, ever-present stack of her photographs. His family would like to express complete love and gratitude for all of the staff of Pennybyrn at Maryfield’s French Country house for their exemplary care and compassionate support in Jim’s final days. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on November 16 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (2105 W Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403) followed immediately by his burial within the church’s Urn Garden. A reception with Jim’s family will follow in St. Andrew’s Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Olson, accompanied by Suzanne Polak will be presented at 12:10 in the Sanctuary on December 13. Mr. and Mrs. Olson and Miss Polak are doctoral music students at UNC-G. The Rachel Caldwell DAR Chapter celebrates Veterans Day BY JANE THOMAS DAR MEMBER SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Members of the Rachel Caldwell Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, could be seen at many of the Veteran’s Day celebrations throughout the county, beginning Nov. 10 in High Point. Greensboro’s Jane Thomas joined Jamestown’s Sherrie and Lee Richman and Betty and Charles La Bella for the Veterans Day Breakfast hosted by High Point University. On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, some members went to the Flag Ceremony at Friendly Center where Gerald Peek, a member of the Jamestown Veterans Committee and Marine Corps League 260, was on hand to help. Many veterans from the MCL 260 later attended the ceremony at Wrenn Miller Park, where Debby Beach and Betty LaBella were spotted hand-

ing out American flags. Another group congregated at the Carolina Field of Honor to thank veterans for their service to this great country of ours. For the second year, the three Greensboro DAR chapters joined together to march in the Greensboro Veteran’s Day parade. Beach brought the “Honoring Vietnam Veterans” banner that her husband and Vietnam veteran, Dave Skinner, made for the Jamestown Memorial Parade several years ago. While the parade was going on in downtown Greensboro, Karen Linnane was giving flags to veterans and their families at the Veterans Memorial in Country Park in Greensboro. Many other patriotic daughters donned their flag pins, flew flags at home, sent emails around the country, and thanked veterans for their service in person, in blogs, and on Facebook pages.

Walkers were up and ready to hit the trail at 4:40 a.m. Saturday morning. They walked approximately six miles in the dark, using headlamps to guide the way. At the trail’s end, Casey was the third one out of the woods. Carr and Tara walked together at a more leisurely pace, taking 13 hours to complete the 28.3 miles. “I told some of my best ‘Dad stories’ along the way,” Carr said with a smile. “The walk is very well organized,” he added. “There are people positioned along the trail to encourage you and four aid stations if you need anything.” At breakfast on the day after the walk, participants had the opportunity to tell the reasons they opted to take the challenge. “Working at Haynes-Inman, I have seen several children that have been granted wishes,” Carr said. “I also know someone who had completed the Trailblaze Challenge and thought since I was turning 60, participating in it would be a personal challenge and a way to help people.” Casey is ready to take on the Challenge again with his dad, and Tara is still basking in the afterglow of having completed one. Knowing a child’s wish will be granted because of their efforts in the recent Trailblaze Challenge has likely made finishing even sweeter for each of them.

I look forward to working with the citizens, the newly elected mayor, council members and the Martha Wolfe Town staff. I am dedicated to working hard to ensure a bright future for the Town of Jamestown. We are so blessed to live in such a special place.” “I am very appreciative and humbled by my win,” Capes said. “My goal now is to live up to the trust the voters have invested in me. So I will faithfully serve in this new capacity as councilman. My focus has always Georgia been that I give back to our commuNixon-Roney nity. I love this town. Both it, and the people who live here with me will always receive my very best efforts.” Following the election, Frederick issued a statement, noting the record turnout of voters in Jamestown. “To my supporters, thank you for the encouragement that launched and sustained this 3-weeks’ write-in campaign, which, given the circumstances, we all knew was going to be Rebecca Mann a long shot,” he said. “Not being on Rayborn the ballot is a major hurdle that few write-in campaigns overcome, and most such campaigns have months, not mere weeks, to work with. You all gave my write-in campaign many more votes than it received even in the primary (when my name was on the ballot)! Thank you for that fantastic support, including a special thanks to those of you who also volunteered your time, your yard sign space, and your financial support!” The new Town Council and mayor will be sworn in at the Dec. 19 Council meeting.

Message from Virginia for Democrats: Fight Trump, not each other North Carolina is not Virginia. And 2017 is not 2018 or 2020. But North Carolina Democrats and Republicans still watched what happened in our neighboring state’s elections last week for clues about next year’s elections in our state. Although they are different states, there are similarities. Arguably, Virginia and North Carolina are more like each other than either is to any other state. They are about the same size geographically (Va. 42,770 square miles; N.C. 53,820) and population wise (Va. about 8.5 million people; N.C. about 10 million). They share beautiful mountains, a similar Piedmont, a coastal plain, and an Atlantic shoreline. In each state, there is a remembrance of a long dominance by mostly conservative Democrats that was swept aside by the growing strength of conservative Republicans. Today large parts of both states are rural and with small towns where Republicans are strong. Similarly, in both states, urban areas are growing rapidly, and Democrats are doing much better in those areas. Politically, at least until last week’s election, the states were twins. Both have Democratic governors, making them a

Should Pets in Cars be Restrained? By Sam mazzotta paw’s corner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What do you think of the law in the U.K. that fines drivers up to $6,580 for having their pets unrestrained in the car? Isn’t that the perfect example of government overreach? -- Chuck G., El Paso, Texas

DEAR CHUCK: That is a hefty fine, but I understand why the law is on the books. While some dogs are comfortable sitting unrestrained in a back seat or passenger seat, so they can put their head out the window (you never see an unhappy dog doing that, ever), many pets have a hard time sitting comfortably as the car moves about. Unrestrained, dogs may slide around, fall onto the floor and otherwise be stressed by the ride. Some may get really agitated and clamber around in the car, distracting you. to keep a car on the road when a cat panics, climbs up the fabric of the back of the driver’s seat, and sinks both front claws into your shoulder. And of course, if there’s an accident and your pet is unrestrained, serious injury can result. Your pet will crash into objects inside the car, or be thrown completely out of the car. The U.K. isn’t alone in enacting legislation to restrain pets in moving cars. Nine U.S. states have laws on the books as of June 2017, Orvis.com reports. Each law has different requirements and penalties, but all agree that an unrestrained pet can contribute to distracted driving or an obstructed view. Regardless of your state’s law, keep your pet safe by making sure it is either in a carrier or a pet-specific seat restraint when you drive.

For every certain moment of greatness in sports, there is an equally certain moment of tragedy. On Nov. 7, 2017, Roy “Doc” Halladay became the living embodiment of that sentiment through his death. Halladay was a great pitcher. Baseball is a funny sport in that hitters get all the accolades, but true fans and those in the business of the sport know that pitchers are what make the game work. Fans may cheer for the home-run hitter, but it’s the pitcher who puts the ball in play, and it’s the pitcher who sends that hitter back to the bench with a few killer curves and fastballs that most people in the upper decks can’t even see nor comprehend. Halladay was just such a guy. Seven times he was in the top five for the Cy Young award; twice he left with the iron. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, his was a figure you couldn’t ignore. For years, it was common knowledge around the league that if

you had Halladay, you had a winner on your team. He won 20 games three times, 19 games twice. Never lost more than 11 games in a season, ever. His lifetime WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) was 1.17 ... better than Bob Gibson (1.18), Jim Palmer (1.18) and Bob Feller (1.3) to cherry-pick a few. He threw two no-hitters -- one a perfect game and another in the playoffs, matching only Don Larsen in that feat. He won 203 games and lost only 105. The guy had Hall of Fame written all over him, and there was little doubt that he could have kept pitching after his retirement. He was only 40 when he died. To understand Halladay’s dominance during the early parts of the 21st century, you only need check the baseball columns of the day. Halladay pitched in Toronto for 12 seasons, and every single team wanted him in their uniform next. Philadelphia won that contest, and the instant credibility he lent to the franchise was impossible to miss every fourth day.

“There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings ever to play the game,” read the Phillies twitter, echoing sentiments of fans everywhere. It’s creepy that Roy died in a plane crash. While air travel is considered the safest means of transport, it was hard for baseball fans to believe when Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson both met their early demise in a small cockpit. Halladay, it seemed, couldn’t resist the allure either. “I have dreamed about owning a A5 since I retired! Real life is better [than] my dreams!!” Halladay tweeted on Oct. 13. Well, Roy got his wish, and we got to watch him play. He’s in a better place, and every sportsman was better for having known the guy. Rest in peace, Roy ... fly on.
