What to see at this Year’s Exciting changes in store for this year By CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com
Si Woo Kim continued the tradition of first-time PGA Tour winners at the 2016 Wyndham Championship. At press time, Kim was expected to defend his title, but it is not known if the injury that forced withdrawal from last week’s PGA Championship will also force withdrawal from the Wyndham.
If you’re expecting to see bikini-clad babes and handsome hunks at the “ocean beach” along the lake guarding the 15th and 16th holes at the Wyndham Championship this year, you might be very disappointed. It appears the beach will now be lakeside, so the outfits might not be as skimpy. That’s just one of the changes this week at the final PGA Tour tournament of the regular season. Also gone is “Margarita-
ville,” the popular watering hole/music venue outside the main clubhouse. In it’s place, “Front Porch at the Wyndham” will feature live music, entertainment and concessions. The venue is open to all tournament patrons and PGA Tour professionals will also pay visits during the day. Replacing the popular sand sculpture outside the clubhouse is a topiary garden. Artist Topiary Joe will create custom-designed topiary sculptures. Verdant moss and lush plantings will be transformed into famous figures and images as Wyndham Champion-
ship fans watch. “Wyndham Worldwide has thousands of properties all over the world,” said Mark Brazil, Wyndham Championship tournament director. “This year, we’ve chosen to showcase some of Wyndham’s southern locations with this new tournament theme just like we did a few years ago when Key to Wyn looked like a ski lodge with pine trees and snow outside and skiing simulators inside. It should be really cool to watch Topiary Joe sculpt moss and plants into people and images.” One more new venue this
year are “Food Trucks on 10,” near the 10th green, which also includes a Michelob Ultra tasting and six different North Carolina craft beers. Local residents will recognize familiar faces at the Zeko’s and Grinder trucks. At press time, professionals committed to appear include three-time Wyndham champion Davis Love III, world No. 8 Henrik Stenson, World Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els, Kyle Stanley, Charles Howell III, former FedExCup champions Bill Haas see PGA, page 2
Flowers closes Winston-Salem plant Jamestown workers offered incentive plan
By CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com Flowers Foods, Inc., which operates the bakery on West Main Street in Jamestown, announced on Aug. 9 that it was permanently closing its Winston-Salem bakery. The plant closing will occur Oct. 8 and 169 employees must find other positions. “The major reasons for this business decision are outdated equipment and insufficient volume to justify keeping the bakery open,” read the company’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed
with the N.C. Commerce Department. The decision to close was made “to improve the profitability of its warehouse segment.” The Thomasville, Ga.-based bakery purchased the bankrupt snack cake bakery in Winston-Salem in 2005. Flowers also made public its secondquarter earnings report on Aug. 9, which indicated a 0.9 percent decline in sales and a 12.5 percent drop in net income. Earlier this year, Flowers Foods announced an initiative to reduce annual expenses by at least $45 million by fiscal year 2018. The plant closing is not expected to impact the Jamestown location. However,
a July announcement by the company could mean changes locally. On July 15, Flowers corporate office announced plans for a voluntary employee separation incentive plan (VSIP) as part of efforts to restructure, streamline operations and better position the company for profitable growth. The Jamestown plant was included in the plan, as was WinstonSalem. Not all employees were offered the VSIP, according to press releases. Only specific salaried employees who meet certain defined age, length of employment and business function criteria would be offered the incentive plan.

recipes Gourmet on a Budget
By angela shelf medearis kitchen diva You easily can prepare delicious meals for your family and friends without spending a lot of money. My frugal relative runs a small gourmet catering business. She manages to put on high-end events with a low-end budget by planning carefully and shopping at discount stores for ingredients and supplies. Her freezer is her friend, because she often buys items on sale and then packages and stores them for later use. Her fabulous food and events are always beautifully presented without breaking the budget. Try these tips to save time, money and stress when making gourmet meals for your friends or family. * Compare brands and look at the cost of food per serving. If you’ll use all of it, the economy size is often (but not always) a better price per serving. Bring a calculator to compare unit prices. (Sales tags often do not compute unit prices.) Generic brands tend to be the best deal, and they often are just as good as the name-brand items. * Where you shop may cost you money. Bulk food stores aren’t always a good choice. You may be tempted to buy foods you don’t need and can’t store properly. * Buy canned, packaged non-food items and personal-care items from discount stores. You’ll pay more for these at the grocery store. * Stock up on budget-friendly, oftenused non-perishable or easy-to-freeze foods when they’re on sale. * Nutritious foods are a better value. Foods high in fat and sugar -- like cookies, chips, doughnuts and soft drinks -have fewer nutrients than fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and lean meats. Remember, the fiber in fruits and vegetables fills you up and keeps hunger away. * Buy spices at the dollar store. Spices are typically overpriced at supermarkets, yet you can pay $1 and actually get more of the exact same product because their packages are bigger. You often can use dried spices in place of fresh without sacrificing flavor. * Get more servings out of your favorite recipes by adding nutritious ingredients! Add brown rice to soups or stews, frozen vegetables to favorite pasta dishes, or rinsed and mashed black beans to burgers. * Cook once and eat twice. Buy enough
ingredients to cook more than one meal and freeze meal-sized portions so there’s no need to buy frozen dinners. This also will ensure you use leftovers and don’t waste food. * Store food properly. Food that gets tossed is money lost. Air-tight re-sealable containers and bags are less expensive at discount stores and save money. * Breakfast foods like eggs are less expensive and make a great protein for a main dish. Try my delicious recipe for Crab, Spinach and Roasted Red Pepper Frittata using ingredients you easily can find at discount stores. It’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and provides a gourmet touch to your table without breaking your budget. Healthy Diet Possible While Avoiding Oxalate By keith roach, m.d. to your good health
Grilling Tip: Kabobs Foods that are cooked together on the same skewer should heat quickly and take the same amount of time to cook. Foods with different cooking times, like vegetables and meat, should be grilled on separate skewers. Also, be sure to leave a little space between pieces on the skewer so the food cooks evenly. If you like metal skewers, buy twisted or square ones, not round -- the food will twirl on the skewers less and cook more evenly. If you’re using wooden or bamboo skewers, shape isn’t a factor. But soak them in water for at least 15 minutes before using so they don’t burn. Just pat dry before putting food on them. Right now, government officials have to publish their intentions in the newspaper. Including where they intend to build facilities you don't want down the block. But that will change if some politicians get their way. They want to start putting public notices online instead, buried somewhere on a little seen, rarely visited government website. Don’t let government keep you in the dark – help shine the light. .

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had several kidney stones and was advised to avoid oxalate. I was told that green, leafy vegetables and grains are high in oxalate. How can my diet be healthy if I avoid these healthy foods? — D.F. ANSWER: Calcium oxalate is the most common type of kidney stone, so limiting dietary oxalate makes sense. However, increasing water intake, dietary calcium and potassium can help prevent kidney stones. It is paradoxical, but dietary calcium reduces kidney stone risk while calcium supplements increase kidney stone risk. Also, vitamin C increases kidney stone risk, so it’s not recommended to take supplemental vitamin C. There are many places to find the oxalate content of food, starting with your dietician, but websites like www. lowoxalate.info and www.ohf.org have nice lists. There you can find many fruits and vegetables that have little or no oxalate, including broccoli, lettuce and cucumber. You do need to avoid spinach, beets and similar vegetables. As far as grains go, corn, rice and wild rice are good choices. DEAR DR. ROACH: For a young couple wanting a baby, is there any help available for a man with a low sperm count? — N.N. ANSWER: Identifying the cause of a couple’s infertility is often difficult. In one large study, 20 percent of cases were attributed to male factors, and 38 percent to female. In 27 percent, there were reasons for infertility in both partners, and in 15 percent of cases no cause could be found. Clearly, both partners need to be evaluated. Low sperm count isn’t a diagnosis; many separate systems can be affected, all leading to reduced sperm count. Abnormalities in hormonal function, mechanical obstruction and testicular disease all are possibilities. Although
many causes of low sperm count are untreatable, not all are. For example, elevated prolactin levels from a tumor or medication can be treated, leading to improved fertility. Low sex-hormone levels can be replaced. Many men are advised to wear boxer shorts, as high temperatures affect fertility, but it’s not clear this is effective. Assistive procedures, such as intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (a single spermatozoa injected into an egg) can be effective, but these procedures are always expensive, rarely covered by insurance, not 100 percent effective and have a small increased risk of birth defects. DEAR DR. ROACH: Is secondhand vapor (from the electronic cigarettes) harmful? — B.S.B. ANSWER: While the evidence that secondhand smoke from regular cigarettes is harmful to people around smokers, causing increased risks of lung cancer and heart disease, the data just aren’t clear about the vapor from electronic cigarettes. It is known that the vapor contains nicotine and potentially cancer-causing chemicals, but the amounts are much lower than with regular cigarettes. These chemicals can be inhaled by nonsmokers if close enough and possibly absorbed through the skin. Electronic cigarettes, also called vaporizers, may help people quit smoking. That’s the only use for them that I would recommend, after which they should be eliminated. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Riding the Rails of Jamestown Library JAMESTOWN

Every time I take a trip on an airplane, I notice how little leg room I have. The airlines cram three seats on a side where there had been only two. If one has to go to the bathroom, one better not be very wide because the aisles are narrow. When I had to spend the night in Philly’s airport, boy did I suffer! At least I thought I was suffering. Then I read about the folks who worked and traveled on the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, at Promontory, Utah. The presidents of the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific met to drive in the ceremonial last stake. The Union Pacific had started in Omaha and worked west, using mostly Irish immigrants. The Central Pacific began in Sacramento and

worked east, using mostly Chinese immigrants. It took almost six years to complete by hand. Or thirty years according to Bain’s Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad. The first passengers had a rough time of it. They traveled thousands of miles in their seats. Only the wealthy had beds at night. It was hot and smoky. The food was often wild game, so “chicken” may really have been prairie dog meat. To get the real feel and sounds of the trip, read Brian Floca’s Locomotive which won the Caldecott gold medal and the Robert F Sibert silver medal.
Stephen Ambrose wrote Nothing Like It in the World: the Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad. In it he profiles the men who had the dreams, the investors who risked their businesses to fund it, the politicians who understood its importance, the Irish and Chinese immigrants who worked on it, and the other laborers who did the dangerous work of laying the track. Blumberg’s Full Steam Ahead is an illustrated history of the railroad, beginning in 1862 when President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act into law, until 1869 when the last spike was driven, uniting the two ends.

America: the Story of Us is a DVD which has a nice documentary of the railroad’s construction and use. Several novels were written with this railroad as its setting. In Coolies by Yin, a young boy learns the story of his great-great-great grandfather who came from China to build the tracks. The Journal of Sean Sullivan tells the story of a fifteen yearold boy, as he experiences the hardships and rewards as he works with his Irish father. Dragon’s Gate by Laurence Yep is the story of a teen who accidentally kills a Manchu and is sent to America to build a tunnel for the railroad. The next time I take a trip, I might be more grateful for the luxury. At least there will be air conditioning and no Indian attacks or prairie dogs for dinner. Old School Barbecue continues
By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER Norma@normabdennis.com
Some people refer to the stately old building that sets on a hill at the corner of Ragsdale Road and Main Street as the old Jamestown Public School. Others, however, call it the Jamestown Public Library. Both names are correct. Built in 1915, the structure once served as an educational institute for students in a large section of Guilford County. The construction of Ragsdale High and Jamestown Middle schools, and the expansion of the Jamestown Elementary School building in 1982 left the old building scheduled for demolition. A grassroots effort by the community saved the building from destruction. It was renovated and opened in 1988 for use as a public library and archives featuring education in the county. Like all buildings, the old school/library requires maintenance to keep it in repair and maintenance involves money. Originally, fundraisers in the form of hot dog suppers were held to raise money for the support of the building. But in 1994, the annual event began featuring barbecue. When the fundraiser was not held in 2015, a group of volunteers saw a need to revive the barbecue suppers once more. They worked to coordinate a fundraiser for 2016 and have been meet-
ing recently to assure that the Old School Barbecue fundraiser would be held again this year. “The barbecue is more than a fundraiser to maintain the building,” said Ronda Hodgin Odenwelder, class of 1965. “It is also a social event in the community and lots of classes use it as an opportunity to meet and catch up on what their fellow classmates are doing. We did not want to see it stop.” This year’s event will be held on the grounds of the Jamestown Public Library Sept. 16 from 5-7 p.m. The meal will once again be prepared and served by BBQ Joe’s Country Cooking and Catering. The Vagabonds, a duet from Winston-Salem, will provide entertainment with their blend of ballads, blues and rockabilly. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased at the Jamestown Public Library during regular business hours. Guests are asked to bring their own chairs. All proceeds go toward the continuing upkeep of the old Jamestown Public School/Jamestown Library building. Although the building’s educational legacy for students continues at Ragsdale, today the library it houses benefits the entire community. “We are thankful to those who support the event with their attendance and to businesses who have contributed to help make the fundraiser a success,” said Steve

Support disaster relief by eating breakfast for supper
On Aug. 20, the public is invited to a Breakfast Supper to help raise funds for disaster response. The event is sponsored by Mitchell’s Grove United Methodist Church, 3511 ML King Dr. (formerly E. Kivett Drive). The church has sent its Disaster Response Truck and teams of volunteers into disasters in many areas: tornados in Oklahoma and North Carolina, hurricanes in North and South Carolina, floods in West Virginia, North and South Carolina and fires in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Disaster teams have been involved in cleaning up, tearing out and rebuilding to help those persons whose homes and churches have been damaged or destroyed by disasters. The Breakfast Supper will help support the continuing efforts of the Disaster Response Truck. The all-you-can-eat meal will consist of eggs, pancakes, Neese’s sausage, grits, biscuits, jellies and beverages. The meal will start at 5 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets are available at the door and from church members.
Miracle League needs volunteers
The Miracle League of High Point, a program offered through High Point Parks & Recreation, provides children ages 5-22 who have intellectual and/or physical disabilities the opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. The League recently added several new teams and needs additional volunteer coaches for the upcoming fall season. Weather permitting, weekend games will be played on either Friday nights or Saturday mornings for approximately six weeks. Games last about an hour and volunteers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before they begin. Baseball knowledge and experience is helpful but not required; training will be provided.

The Eateries of Madison County
Some people fall in love with bridges, as in the late Robert James Waller’s “The Bridges of Madison County,” the best-selling romance novel from 1992. Others, like me, fall in love with eateries. So here goes with “The Eateries of Madison County, North Carolina” and some information about three restaurants that could be included in a follow up volume to my book, “North Carolina’s Roadside Eateries: A Traveler’s Guide to Local Restaurants, Diners, and Barbecue Joints.” I found these Madison County eateries while attending the Laughing Heart Literary Festival at the iconic Laughing Heart Lodge in Hot Springs. Smoky Mountain Diner in Hot Springs Terry Roberts’ people have lived in Madison County for generations, and his debut novel, “A Short
By d.g. martin One on one Time to Stay Here,” is set in Hot Springs during the First World War when German interns were housed in the old resort hotel. Roberts waxes eloquently about the Smoky Mountain Diner, family-owned for years, he says. “Once when we were eating there during the Christmas season,” he remembers, “the staff emptied out of the restaurant suddenly. They were leaving to man the diner’s float
in the Hot Springs Christmas parade. On the way out, they told everybody to put the money on the counter when they finished eating.” Roberts says the diner serves the “best pie in Madison County.” Appalachian Trail hikers meet up with locals and tourists at the diner to feast on mountain-sized dishes like the Hungry Hiker double-decker Black Angus beef sandwich. Owner Genia Hayes Peterson, her daughter Casey, Casey’s husband, William Franklin, the main cook, and their son Zach keep the restaurant open seven days a week and on holidays. They have the help of staff members like Cindy Wood, who has been working there for 19 years. After eating take in the wonderful downtown Hot Springs where you can see tired trail hikers passing through. Stop at Gen-
try Hardware and if you have time, visit Hot Springs Resort where the springs that made the town famous are still steaming. Bring your bathing suit.
Zuma Coffee in Marshall Although Terry Roberts recommends Zuma’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, he likes it best on Thursday evenings when mountain music reigns. He heard a rumor that well-heeled music fans would pay up to $1,000 per season for a front-row table on Thursday nights. Don’t let that scare you away. The rest of the time Zuma’s is primarily a coffee shop. But its “Zuma Food Menu” headlines “Creative, Healthy, Comfort Food.” That is shorthand for “It’s a great place to get a sandwich.” Because the old courthouse is right across the street, Roberts says a good place to sit is outside in
front of Zuma’s “to enjoy the action and drama on court day.” Most of the time there is a parade of tourists, locals, and farmers in overalls who pass by and often come inside to enjoy treats from the coffee bar, cookies and sweets, and a good sandwich meal. After eating, walk down Main Street. Still Mayberrylike, it is quickly becoming a trendy Asheville suburb with shops and more upscale restaurants. Go inside the courthouse and you will be reminded of the trial scene in the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Momma’s Kitchen in Marshall Since 1987, Momma’s Kitchen has been the proud domain of its owner, Sherry Robinson. She tells how her husband, James, sawed down trees and milled the lumber he used to build
the restaurant’s building. Those rough natural wood planks help create a cozy atmosphere and make for an intimate place to enjoy its country cooking. On the day I visited, patrons raved about the fried squash and juicy hamburgers. If you have favorite locally owned and operated eateries in North Carolina, share them with me at nceateries@yahoo.com.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column with the question from Christine B. in Atlanta about her struggle to find pet-friendly housing. I am a director at a nonprofit housing provider, and previously worked as a fair-housing specialist in Nevada. I do not know Christine B.’s specific situation with her cats regarding whether or not she has a disability. However, I feel compelled to offer the following comments and tips regarding Reasonable Accommodations in rental housing under U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which applies to all rental properties of more than four units where the owner does not reside on-site. In April 2013, HUD’s office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity released guidance stating that any comfort, therapy or companion animal is considered a service animal. This is much broader than the more familiar ADA requirement defin-

ing a service animal as either a dog or a miniature horse trained to assist a disabled person with a certain task. Many people who suffer from depression and anxiety as well as those with physical ailments who benefit from their companion animals (cats too!) can request a Reasonable Accommodation from a landlord. Because they are considered service animals per HUD’s guidance, landlords may NOT collect pet deposits, pet fees or pet rent from residents requesting this accommodation. I firmly believe that all tenants should be aware of their rights. -- Joscylyn H., Albuquerque, New Mexico
If ever there was a more relevant irrelevant athlete in the history of sports, it is Pete Rose. Everyone remembers that kid in class when we were growing up who just couldn’t seem to control himself or stay out of trouble but was the first guy you’d pick for your kickball team. Wherever Pete Rose went to school, he was that guy. Pete Rose manages to stay in the news, and he does it better than any other player with the exception of Jackie Robinson. Nobody sits around these days and talks about, say, Walter Johnson, George Sisler, Johnny Mize or Nap Lajoie. But we still talk about Pete Rose. The kid stays in the picture. The Philadelphia Phillies wanted to induct Rose into their hall of fame a week ago, and they had planned on passing out little bobbleheads of his likeness to all the fans in attendance. As per the norm, the deal didn’t go down because Rose has some alleged NSFW issues. The Phillies had good intentions, but if there’s anything Pete Rose does better than hitting a ball with a bat, it’s staying
out of halls of fame. I love Philadelphia, and I love Philadelphia fans. I can relate a story about the time I was in a very famous resort town in New Jersey, and one day, over icecream sodas, conversation occurred with a few darling tourists from Dallas. Texas and New Jersey have some sort of kindred spirit. We don’t ever care about the price of gas, we don’t mind talking loud, and you have to presume that we’re packing heat. The person across the way started talking smack about Eli Manning and the Giants, and the Giant fans, in turn, returned fire about Tony Romo and Gov. Chris Christie, whom everyone in New Jersey hates. (There were no Jets fans in attendance because nobody ever talks about the Jets.) For dangerous fun, I pointed out one of the patrons in an Eagles hat and said to the Dallas fans to pay close attention. “At least we’re not EAGLE fans,” I said with exaggeration, and like clockwork, within a microsecond, the Eagle fan’s head shot up. “DON’T EVEN GO THERE!” In context, it wasn’t a very genial reply, but it did beg my next question.
“Go where? The Super Bowl? Where the Eagles will never go in your lifetime?” The barstool screeched across the floor. He tried to make a rush, but just like the Eagles front line he was subdued with ease, and the staff quickly punted him out the door. “See?” I said to the Dallas fan. “That’s a Philadelphia fan. Half of that city will literally fight you if you talk smack about their team.” And this is the town that won’t stand by Pete Rose and toss around a little doll? I’m not in any way suggesting that the allegations regarding Rose are something to make light of, but they are just that -- allegations. We don’t know what happened in his private life, but I think we all know far too much about Pete Rose’s life anyway. And seriously, Pete ... Philadelphia didn’t back you up? That’s hall of fame stuff right there. We know you’re the hit king, but after a while you have to admit that you’ve taken too many hits, too. Sooner or later you have to call the game.
