Council to meet, hold workshop BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

The Jamestown Town Council will get back to business for its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 15. As has become the policy for several years, the Council will vote to unseal several closed session minutes, this time from the past four years. At the December meeting, Public Services Director Paul

Blanchard presented bids he had received for construction of the East Fork Road pedestrian Bridge. The Council will vote to accept the lowest bid of $1,488,226 by North State Environmental Inc. The Council will also hear an annual report from the Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire Department and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a presentation of the June 30, 2018, Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The final item of new business

Santa Claus and his elves were busy the last few months, getting toys ready for kids on the “good little boys and girls” list that is, of course, checked twice. Now, however, everyone is having a chance to take a breather. For one local Santa, the breather also gives him a chance to savor the special gift he received this year – notice that he will be inducted into the 2018 International Santa Claus Hall of Fame, a project to celebrate and preserve the story of the men and women who have portrayed Santa Claus. Jac Grimes, who now lives in Greensboro after 27 years in Jamestown, learned in December that he has been selected for the Hall of Fame, but with 90 appearances and events over the recent holiday season – sometimes seven in one day – he’s just now having time to reflect on the honor. He is only one of four Hall of Fame Santas from North Carolina and one of 62 total. Ginger Penley, the volunteer coordinator at Women’s Hospital in Greensboro, nominated Grimes, who visits the hospital with his wife Liz, better known as Mrs. Claus, on Christmas Eve morning for Baby’s First Santa photo. “She and I had talked about this and I felt that she was going to nominate me,” Grimes said. “I thought this was a couple-year process

[but it happened in 2018]. On Christmas Eve morning she gave me the original nomination letter and the petition she put in with signatures from the doctors and nurses in the hospital.” Candidates for the Hall of Fame are judged on their overall career, service to the community, range of appearances, contribution to the Santa world, length of service, uniqueness of career, originality and charity. The review committee does not know the names of the Santas they are considering until the choices are made. Grimes ran a video store in Jamestown for eight years and is now a wedding officiant. He got into the Santa gig by accident. One year, a friend who portrayed Santa came to visit the Grimes’

Anticipation of the holidays may have taken a backseat for Tre Goode this year. On Dec. 19, the Ragsdale High School athlete participated in an early-signing ceremony to play football at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. “Getting an athletic scholarship and going to college for free has been my biggest accomplishment as an athlete,” Goode said. “Although I have not met all my goals athletically, playing football at Ragsdale and being able to play at UNC-Charlotte has brought fuel to my fire.” UNC-Charlotte was the only college to which Goode applied. He liked the city and the college atmosphere and felt it offered facilities that would aid in his success for the future. Coach Johnny Boykin had encouraged Goode to play football since middle school. Having played basketball for years, Goode decided to follow Boykin’s suggestion and began playing football as a sophomore. “Coach Boykin told me football would be a good sport for me,” Goode said. “When I saw what he said slowly work out, I decided to focus on football.” Goode had good examples to follow in the sport. His grandfather played for High Point Central and his dad played for Ragsdale. One of his uncles played for Ragsdale as well and went on to play at Johnson C. Smith University, also in Charlotte. In high school, Goode played several positions, including wide receiver, safety and cornerback. He will be playing wide receiver at Charlotte. “I think my strength is the urge

Customers remain faithful throughout the years

Susan Springer – a.k.a. The Soap Lady – recently celebrated the opening of her business in Jamestown 10 years ago. But Springer actually has been operating her business for the past 20 years. In December, she held an Open House at her 106 E. Main St. location to recognize not only her many years of business, but her faithful customers as well. It was while serving as a Daisy Scout leader that making soap as a business originated. She created green and red peppermint soap for the girls for Christmas and their mothers all wanted to know where she got it. “When they learned I made it, they wanted me to make them

out of her car, showing them to others wherever she went. She also made private labels for restaurants, spas and retail stores and for special occasions such as wed-

dings or parties. She participated in a number of craft shows, which she continues to do today. “I knew I would open a store someday,” Springer said. In 2008, The Soap Lady opened her store in Stafford Square, nestled between a beauty shop on one side and jeweler on the other. Last year, she moved across the parking lot to the location facing Main Street. She has more space and is much more visible. “I have had people stop at this location who did not realize there was a store like this in town,” Springer said. Springer stocks her shop with a large variety of products in different fragrances, as well as non-scented items. Everything is wrapped separately or placed in jars to keep the scents from being overpowering.

“I don’t want anyone to walk in the shop and be offended,” Stringer said. From delicate fragrances for ladies to masculine scents for men to special shapes for all occasions, there is something for everyone. The shop carries more than lotions and potions, however. “We promote all locally-made quality products such as honey, original home decor, jewelry, woodworking, pottery and original watercolors,” Springer notes on her website. “There is something new each week.” Her plans for the future: “Keeping everybody clean,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. After a busy holiday season, The Soap Lady will be closed most of January and reopen toward the end of the month.

continued from front special-needs son. “When he was leaving, I said to Liz, when I grow up, maybe I want to do that.” Grimes recalled. A few years later he was a substitute school bus driver for Guilford County Schools and one day during the Christmas season he was wearing a red coat when he arrived to pick up his passengers. Some of the kids noticed the coat, Santa cap and the beard. “Kids got on the bus and said, ‘are you really him?’” he said with a laugh. “I told them, ‘Your parents told me to keep an eye on you.’ You could hear a pin drop the whole ride home.” When Grimes and his wife went to a local parade, he thought he could do a better job than the person portraying Santa in a cheap suit and fake beard. “I’ve had a beard pretty much all my adult life,” he said, but noted that he has to let it grow out for the portrayal and bleach both the beard and hair white. He recently had about four inches trimmed off the beard after Christmas. Thinking he could be a realistic Santa prompted him to attend Santa school in Atlanta in 2006 and he now holds an Advanced Master’s Degree of Santa Claus-ology from the International University of Santa Claus. His first official appearance was, oddly enough, in the summer of 2006 as Santa at Wet and Wild Emerald Point at the park’s Santa on Vacation event. He wore red shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. Since then he as become the Santa for the Fox 8 Holiday Concerts in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, Festival of Lights in Greensboro and has participated in parades in Charlotte,

Greensboro and Thomasville. He doesn’t do malls but numerous photo shoots keep him busy as do appearances at corporate, neighborhood, private parties as well as charity, school, church and individual home visits. He and his wife were even hired to crashed a wedding reception this year. Grimes was the Santa at the Jamestown Public Library for several years. Mrs. Claus often appears by herself at events. Mr. and Mrs. Claus appear every Christmas Eve on the “Good Morning Show” on WFMY television. “I’ve always loved kids,” Grimes said. “We’ve been foster parents and had six of our own.” He really enjoys the Christmas Eve morning visits to Women’s Hospital. “We did 30 newborns this year,” he said, “then went to the [neonatal intensive care unit] and did 30 preemies and the babies that are in intensive care. “When you’ve been out working on a lot of stuff and you end up your season with brand new life, that’s a real big part of ending the season,” Grimes said with emotion. “Babies as young as 4-hours old. This year I held one that was under two pounds.” He said the best part of being Santa may just be being around the little ones. “The best part is when a child first sees you and runs across the room and literally throws themselves into your arms and they’re all lit up and they’re really happy to see Santa,” he said, “That’s probably the best part, whether it’s a paid setting or a volunteer setting.” Grimes believes his Santa portrayal is a little different from those of his peers. “There’s a saying in the

Santa community, ‘You don’t find Santa. Santa finds you.’ I think that’s probably true. If there’s anything that makes me different is that I’m a stickler for details. It’s showing up in a car that has ‘Sleigh on the tag [as his does], it’s goatskin gloves instead of cotton. Nice suits.” [Liz has made several of his Santa’s outfits.] “In a child’s eyes, Santa is Santa. But adults hire you and adults need to have that belief, too. My portrayal has to be realistic in the eyes of children and adults.” His attention to detail led him to be one of the founders of the International Brotherhood of Real-Bearded Santas. The International Santa Claus Hall of Fame began in 2010 and is located in Santa Claus, Ind. Grimes joins such notable portrayers of Santa Claus as 2010’s Edmund Gwenn, from the original “Miracle on 34th Street” movie, Mickey Rooney (2012), Ed Asner (2015) and High Point’s Cliff Snider (2012). In addition, James Edgar, the first department store Santa who began in 1890, was inducted in 2010 and Haddon Sundblom, who created the iconic Santa Claus figures for Coca-Cola, was inducted in 2014. Grimes doesn’t know exactly when or where the induction ceremony will be held. But when it happens, there will certainly be a lot of beards and red suits and jolly people in the audience. Grimes said that, in the Santa world, being in the Hall of Fame is the highest honor you can get. “Being Santa has almost given me a sense of permanence, of immortality,” he said. “That’s an amazing legacy. It’s hard to even fathom.”

His parents Greg and Travia Goode, grandparents, cousins, coaches and teammates have all served as encouragement to Goode throughout his athletic career. His favorite memory is scoring a touchdown when his grandfather attended a game before he passed away with lung cancer. “I think playing sports has helped me acquire many leadership skills,” Goode

acknowledged. “I would recommend sports to anyone. I try to play as much as I can because every sport uses different muscles and movements. Participating in sports helps you stay active.” When not playing sports or studying, Goode enjoys eating, sleeping and spending time with family and friends. Going pro has always been his dream, but Goode’s plans for the future include other possibilities for a career. He wants to obtain a major in pre-kinesiology while at Charlotte. Right now, Goode will focus on the second semester of high school and a new anticipation – that of his upcoming graduation.

Buddy O’Neill Mann passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on December 28th after a brief illness. Always inquisitive about medical matters, he would want you to know that he was diagnosed with transverse myelitis in mid-November and experienced a series of infections in the weeks after from which he was never able to fully recover. He was born on January 14, 1938, in Princeton, West Virginia. Buddy attended Bluefield College and graduated from Princeton High School, Virginia Tech (then known as VPI), and North Carolina State University. He worked his entire career, beginning with a college co-op, as an electrical engineer with Bell Labs, which became AT&T, and then Lucent Technologies. The name changed; he stayed. Buddy was a devoted family man who was home every night in time for dinner. He was a good citizen, coaching sports for his children, serving three terms on the Jamestown Town Council, and multiple years with the board of directors for the Historic Jamestown Society, among other volunteer efforts. He was a loyal and loving husband to his wife of nearly forty-nine years, Joanne, taking care of her both in the good times and through numerous challenging medical diagnoses, including the pancreatic cancer that ultimately led to her death. Together, Buddy and Joanne raised two very loved children, Scott Mann (Courtney) of Wake Forest, NC, and Rebecca Mann Rayborn (Cory) of Jamestown, NC. He was known as “Daddy B” to his three cherished grandchildren, Meredith Mann, Davis Mann, and Katherine Rayborn. He was a role model to his kids, doing the right thing even when it

Who are these 1.5 million North Carolinians stricken by poverty? Nichol answers, “They are not the folks on the side of the road asking for handouts. They’re our neighbors, the ones who wait on us or take care of our kids or sit down the row at church on Sunday. They are usually employed. They are almost always embarrassed. Frequently, they once had better jobs. But now they work longer hours for poorer wages and with fewer benefits. Their stories can crush. Parents willingly sacrifice their dignity, their health, and their wellbeing for their kids. Children are robbed of the ability to thrive and the joy of life by the ravages and the fears of hunger. These are folks who make choices daily that shouldn’t have to be made in a nation of surpassing resources. They are forced into choices that most of us cannot readily contemplate. I know I can’t.” Nichol has numbers at his fin-

gertips to show the dismal conditions in our state and many of its localities. A 2015 survey found that 21 percent of the state’s residents “suffered from food hardship.” Poverty is not just concentrated in our small towns and rural areas. The same survey found the Greensboro-High Point statistical area was the “hungriest in the United States.” An earlier study had found that “Winston-Salem was the nation’s worst large community for childhood food hardship among kids five and under.” Nichol’s book is full of numbers that confirm the tragedy that surrounds us. But he says, they are only numbers. “Ripe for the forgetting. Poverty, though, isn’t a number. It is a draining of the body, a wound to the soul, an injury that divides and diminishes, as it rejects. The numbers alone miss that.” Solutions?

Nichol concentrates on describing the extent and dimensions of poverty in our state rather than proposing solutions. An exception is his assertion that by failing to adopt expanded Medicaid, our state government has condemned a host of its citizens to early death or disability. He criticizes leaders of both political parties for not addressing the monumental poverty crisis he describes. Although there are no simple, obvious, or quick solutions, many readers of Nichol’s passionate presentation and Old Testament-style prophecy will feel a compelling call to action.

Do dogs really need coats in Winter? BY SAM MAZZOTTA PAW’S CORNER

“Age is not important unless you’re a cheese.” — Helen Hayes ©2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently addressed someone leaving a dog out in the cold. Your answer was great, except that I wonder about putting a warm vest on the dog. It is my understanding that dogs have two layers of skin with air in between, which helps heat their body and keep them warm. When you add a coat or vest, it presses down on the air pocket and causes them to be colder. Am I wrong? — Suzanne, via email DEAR SUZANNE: Well, while dogs’ skin does help regulate their

temperature, their fur plays a much bigger role in insulating them from the cold. You’re probably thinking of a dog’s double-layered winter coat, where air between the thick undercoat and the top fur helps regulate body temperature. Some breeds of dog have much thicker undercoats, such as Huskies and Malamutes. Most of us have seen pictures or video of sled dogs, for example, who rarely wear coats while working or at the end of the day. Their bodies generate plenty of heat while they’re active, and their undercoat insulates them from the cold when they’re at rest. They’re also acclimated to their

outdoor environment. Some other dogs don’t do well at all in belowfreezing temperatures — some are small and short-haired, for example, or they’re in poor health, or they’re very young, or they are just not accustomed to spending long periods outside. The most important factor in deciding what your dog needs is you. For a 20-minute walk outside, most healthy dogs don’t need a coat. However, if your dog gets cold quickly or appears to be suffering even after a short time outside, it’s worth trying a well-fitted vest or sweater. Trump should chill about the stock market BY RICH LOWRY Donald Trump may watch the stock market more closely than any day trader. For a president who underlined the increasing importance of working-class whites to the GOP coalition and who trampled so much bipartisan economic orthodoxy during the campaign, to be so overtly obsessed with the stock market is a strange disconnect. In fact, no president in memory has so publicly staked himself to the market. Trump has, in contrast, paid relatively little public attention to wage growth, which is the measure that more closely tracks with his particular political project (especially considering that his election prospects may again depend on Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin). The market clearly acts for Trump like poll numbers or TV ratings — immediate, easily digestible feedback on his perceived worth, or that of his economic stewardship. This isn’t how he should view it, and it was shortsighted to be so boastful about the good times. The stock market goes up and down. Trump didn’t have sole responsibility for the run-up in the market after his election (although taking the regulatory boot off the economy helped) and doesn’t deserve the blame for the downward trend now (although the contention with China and general sense of chaos don’t help). Trump has lashed out at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for being too tight on interest rates, and he might be right. But the president should be less beholden to the gyrations of the market. Wages would be a worthy new object of his attention, and it’d be better if wages didn’t often take a back seat to the stock market and GDP growth. When Trump hears complaints from employers that they are having trouble hiring, his answer should be:

“Good. Pay your workers more.” On the other hand, the political downside of focusing on wages is twofold: Like the stock market, it is a metric that the president doesn’t have direct control over, and unlike the stock market, it hasn’t mostly enjoyed strong upward momentum over the past couple of decades. Oren Cass of the Manhattan Institute and author of the thought-provoking new book “The Once and Future Worker” argues that the point of comparison shouldn’t be whether wages are better than they were in post-crisis 2010, but how they are doing compared with business-cycle peaks in 2007, 2000 and 1989. Here they are lagging. Wages are ultimately related to productivity growth, which has been growing more slowly than in the golden age of the American economy in the mid-20th century. Robert Atkinson of the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation argues forcefully that policymakers should make fostering productivity growth their foremost goal. For his part, Cass suggests a workerfriendly, longer-term agenda of reforming education to put more emphasis on the interests of students who won’t go on to get a four-year college degree; changing our immigration system to keep the lower end of the labor market as tight as possible; and exploring innovative models of unionization to give workers more leverage. Maybe these particular initiatives aren’t to the liking of the White House, but a working-class Republican should have an agenda very specifically tailored to the interests of workers. Alternately bragging and complaining about the stock market isn’t a substitute. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. ©2019 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Couch Theatre by amy anderson “What They Had” (NR) — “What They Had” captures the sweet heartbreak of loving someone who is slipping away, and the impossible decisions that we must make in the twilight years of our lives. Bridget (Hillary Swank) is called home to Chicago when her mother (Blythe Danner) takes off down a snow-covered lane. Her father (Robert Forster) is in denial about his wife’s Alzheimer’s disease, and her brother (Michael Shannon) plays caregiver to Mom and Dad, yearning for more out of life. Mean-

while, Bridget can’t help but compare the unshakeable love of her parents to her own cold marriage. It’s moving and never strays into sappy. “Mid90s” (R) — Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut with this homage to the Los Angeles skate rat scene in 1996. It’s accurate and evocative, rich with a certain offhand nostalgia — youth is youth and struggle is struggle, no matter your background or pursuits. Here, we follow Stevie (Sunny Suljic), who is 13 (as was Hill in 1996), but who looks much younger.

A tense situation on a street corner of Brooklyn ends with one black man dead at the hands of white police officers, and another man who filmed the event facing the terrible choice between speaking out about the injustice and staying silent to protect his family. The impact of the decision is seen from the different perspectives — a black cop struggling with the actions of his colleagues, a young athlete who is called to action, and others. Well done and poignant performances by John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Chante Adams.

Natalie and her friends, and their charming boyfriends, are going. Also conveniently, a masked serial killer decides rightfully that this Hell Fest would be a great time to just openly start killing people — and Natalie’s group is at the top of the list. It’s a great and terrifying idea, especially since these types of amusements (sans live killers) exist. But it’s a terribly executed film, and you’d have to really love “scary” movies to find it enjoyable. Strange But True by samantha Weaver * In this time of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, his body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall.

Lady Randolph Spencer-Churchill, nee Jeanette Jerome, was a socialite, and it is through her that Winston Churchill is related to his wartime ally, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The prime minister and the president were seventh cousins, once removed.

Are you a parent who knows their RSVs? NOVANT HEALTH RSV is so common that nearly all U.S. children become infected with it by the time they are 2. The respiratory syncytial virus infection starts out like a typical cold that involves a runny nose and a cough that eventually goes away. But nearly 75,000 to 125,000 children have worsened symptoms and end up hospitalized each year. Around the world, RSV affects an estimated 64 million people and is responsible for 160,000 deaths each year, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “RSV is a common cold virus, occurring predominately in the months of November through March,” said Dr. Allison Hudson, a pediatrician at Novant Health Pediatrics Oak Hollow in High Point. “In older children and adults, it typically causes upper respiratory tract symptoms of runny nose and cough. In more serious cases, usually involving younger toddlers and infants, it can cause lower respiratory tract symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness and trouble getting enough oxygen.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 47-year-old female in good overall health. About six months ago, I began to take several supplements, one of which was vitamin E (200 IU). I had no noticeable adverse reactions to any of the supplements. About 10 days ago, I started taking 400 IU of vitamin E. Right about the same time as this increase, I began having painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and tiredness. After a week of this, someone suggested that the vitamin E might be the cause. I have stopped taking it and have even avoided foods high in vitamin E. Three days later, I’m still having the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the vitamin E was the cause of the symptoms, shouldn’t they have gone away by now? — K.B. DEAR K.B.: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is possible for levels to build up in the body if it’s taken in high doses for long periods of time. However, toxic effects are unlikely at

less than 1,500 IU daily, which is far higher than what you have been taking. Bleeding is one risk at high doses, as is a theoretical deficiency of vitamin A and D. I think it is far more likely that you happened to get a case of gastroenteritis — inflammation of the stomach/intestines, often caused by a virus. It’s unlikely to be due to the vitamin E. However, since vitamin E supplementation hasn’t been shown to improve any of the many conditions it has been studied for, I don’t recommend that you continue to take it. Go easy on eating for a few days after gastroenteritis: The time-tested BRAT diet (bananas, white rice, peeled apples and dry toast) is effective. You can get enough fluid through water or apple juice, along with some salt, like chicken or vegetable broth.
