West Main Street Townhome Rezoning Delayed a month BY CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com Jamestown residents will have to wait another month to voice their concerns about a proposed townhome development on West Main Street. Gannaway, LLC, has asked to rezone 720 R1 W. Main St. and 101 Matthews Lane to Conditional ZoningMultifamily Residential (CZ-MFR). The company requested a postponement until the Aug. 15 Town Council meeting for the public hearing. The property includes approximately 4.09 acres currently zoned CZ-MFR and approximately 1.44 acres currently zoned C. Gannaway, LLC, plans to construct 36 townhomes on the property which backs up to single family residential homes on Penny Road and Mrs. Winner’s to the west, multifamily residential (Parkview Terrace Apartments) to the east, attorney Ben Farmer’s property to the south and High Point City Lake Park to the north. A second public hearing for an amendment to the Land Development Ordinance regarding the park-

ing of oversized/commercial vehicles in areas zoned residential was continued for the second time and now will be considered at the August meeting. It was tabled at the June Town Council meeting to clarify language. Councilmember Lawrence Straughn questioned whether off-duty emergency vehicles or church vehicles should be included in the not-to-exceed 10,000-pound weight limit. After discussion by the Council, the weight limit was increased to not exceed 20,000 pounds with school and religious buses exempted. Recreational vehicles and watercraft towing vehicles are permitted. The Planning Board will consider the updated amendment at its Aug. 14 meeting. The amendment to the LDO concerning winery, brewery or distillery operation was unanimously approved by the Council. The council rejected a request from Koury Corporation for additional payment for water line extensions in the Grandover West area. The original May 2015 agreement with Jamestown was not to

exceed $575,000 but was amended later that month to $729,690. Additional expenses have cost Koury $63,274.70 and it is this amount they are seeking payment for from Jamestown, above the agreedupon $729,690. Improvements to the Jamestown Golf Course and clubhouse have brought increased revenues, said Director of Golf Ross Sanderlin. Since the course was closed in May and June of last year for renovation, Sanderlin noted that in April 2017 there was a 50 percent increase in green, cart and range fees from April 2016. Increase in clubhouse rentals has also been noted, with more inquiries for private events. New kitchen equipment will be installed soon. The Council set Aug. 15 for a public hearing to update the annexation agreement between Jamestown and High Point. While there are no annexation plans by either municipality, Planning Director Matthew Johnson said he wanted to get this in place before the current agreement expires in December 2018.

Mayor’s Seat Interest Forces Primary

Six candidates running for four council seats BY CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com For the first time in recent memory, Jamestown will hold a primary election to select candidates for mayor. The Oct. 10 primary will only be for mayor and will feature incumbent Keith Volz, seeking his sixth term, current Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Lynn Montgomery, and newcomer Robert Frederick. N.C. General Statute163.294 (a) states “there shall be a primary to narrow the field of candidates to two candidates for each position to be filled.” Volz won his first term as mayor in 2007, the last time there was a contested race for mayor.

Montgomery is a certified public accountant. If elected, she would be the town’s first female mayor. Frederick is digital managing editor of American Scientist magazine. Six candidates are running for the four Town Council seats, therefore, no primary is necessary in that race. Two Town Council candidates have a family history in Jamestown government. Former Town Clerk Martha Wolfe’s mother, Sarah Stafford, was a twoterm councilmember and newcomer Rebecca Mann Rayborn’s father, Buddy Mann, served three terms on the Council. Stafford served as assistant town clerk then clerk for 21 years before retiring in April. Rayborn is co-owner of

Engage North Carolina, a nonprofit consulting and training organization. Two other candidates are familiar with the workings of the town. Pete Resh served as assistant golf professional at Jamestown Park Golf Course and John Capes is a member of the town’s Planning Board. The remaining two candidates, Lawrence Straughn and Georgia Nixon, are currently serving on the Town Council. A former Guilford County Sheriff’s captain, Straughn is seeking his second term and attorney Nixon, her sixth term.

The Jamestown News will provide full candidate profiles and views on issues facing the town prior to the Oct. 10 primary and Nov. 7 elections.

New pastor ready to serve at Adams Farm Community Church

Adams Farm Community Church was looking for a new pastor. The Rev. Dr. Brian Howard, who had been in the ministry since 2000, was looking for a new place to serve. He was the senior pastor at a church in Effingham, S.C., where he had been for the past nine years. “The Lord had used me there, but it was time to find a new field to plow, so to speak,” Howard said with a smile. When the church and pastor connected, it seemed the right fit for both. Howard began serving as pastor at Adams Farm Community Church on the first Sunday in June. “I felt like this was the place the Lord was leading us,” said Howard, who moved to the area with his wife Laura and their son. “I have experience in everything this church wants to do, including blended worship, small groups, outreach in the community and service projects.” Howard first felt called to ministry as a teenager. He

ignored that for a while, choosing instead to follow a track that he thought would lead to a business degree. “The Lord kept calling me back,” he said. “While in high school, I started to lead a music ministry at camps, conferences and retreats and continued to do that throughout college. I eventually got a degree in English with a minor in music. I never expected to be a pastor.” But he attended seminary and took a part-time position as a youth pastor. Delving back into the music ministry, Howard worked at a new church that was just getting started in the Charlotte area. He then served as an associate pastor and led worship and small groups for about six years before moving to South Carolina. Although Howard preaches more than sings, he acknowledged that music is still part of his ministry. He has written some songs and made two albums. But he looks forward to leading the congregation at Adams Farm Community Church as its pastor. “I have been through the challenges of starting a new church in my early ministry and serving in an established

church,” Howard said. “The two converge at Adam Farm.” Adams Farm Community Church will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the fall. It began holding services at the Adams Farm Club House on Oct. 25, 1992. As it outgrew that facility, it moved to the Wesley Long Nursing Center in Adams Farm then to the Jamestown Middle School Gym. In 1999, the congregation moved to its current building at 5113 Mackay Road. “The church is young enough to try new things while still preserving traditions,” Howard said. “We have changed our method, but not the message. The hallmark of our denomination (Associate Reformed Presbyterian) is that everything we do goes back to the Bible, God’s word. “There are already a lot of great things happening at Adam Farm Community Church. Our challenge is to keep them organized and fresh. The people here appreciate the history of the Protestant Reformation but are willing to stay vibrant in the 21st century.” The motto of the church is “Serving others for Jesus’ sake.”

Dennis) “Our goal is to be a church that is frequently outside its own walls,” Howard said. The church conducts a weekday preschool for approximately 50 children and hosted a communitywide Easter event. Its worship band recently played at the Greensboro Urban Ministry. “The work here is a team effort,” Howard said. “I feel at home here. There is a great team of people serving together.

“We want to make a difference in Greensboro, Jamestown and the surrounding area. We truly want to be a church for the community.”

The community is invited to join Pastor Howard and the congregation of Adams Farm Community Church for a prayer service Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., followed by worship at 10 a.m. The church also conducts a variety of children’s, student and small group ministries.

Strange but true by Samantha weaver * It was 19th-century English writer Sir Arthur Helps who made the following sage observation: “Reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought.” * In the state of Texas, it’s against the law to milk a cow that’s not your own. * You might be surprised to learn that when Walt Disney first released the animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” in 1959, it was a box-office flop. However, the success of the various re-releases — in 1970, 1979, 1986, 1995 — have made it one of the most successful films released in 1959, second only to “Ben-Hur.” The domestic total gross amounts to $623 million (when adjusted for the inflation of ticket prices), which puts “Sleeping Beauty” in the top-40 films of all time.

* Those who study such things say that men who tuck in their shirts on a regular basis — and 49 percent of American men do tuck — tend to be happier than non-tuckers. For starters, they earn, on average, 19 percent more. They’re also 22 percent more likely to have an optimistic outlook, are 10 percent more likely to feel that they’re outgoing, and are more likely to report that they date often.

* Marsupials and platypuses are the only mammals that don’t have belly buttons. A marsupial loses its umbilical cord before emerging its mother’s pouch, so a scar never forms. Platypuses are hatched and never have an umbilical cord to begin with.

Thought for the Day: “The great secret of success is to go through life as a man who never gets used up. That is possible for him who never argues and strives with men and facts, but in all experience relies upon him* You might be surprised to learn that self, and looks for the ultimate cause of things hyenas are more closely related to cats than in himself.” — Albert Schweitzer to dogs. Add Pop to Plain Popcorn By aNgela shelf medearis kitchen diva On a recent movie date night with my husband, I spent a small fortune on a bag of popcorn at the snack bar. I must admit, although it hurt my wallet, I was able to take comfort in the fact that plain popcorn is actually a good snack choice -- especially for diabetics, as it does not impact bloodsugar levels. In fact, one serving of popcorn (about 3 cups) can provide about 70 percent of our recommended daily intake of whole grain and energy-producing complex carbohydrates. Popcorn contains no cholesterol, is virtually fat-free (only 0.1 g per cup) and contains only 100 to 150 calories in a serving of five popped cups. Popcorn also contains a number of essential vitamins, including iron, folate, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, pantothenic acid and vitamins B6, A, E and K, with lesser amounts of calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. It also contains fiber, providing roughage the body needs in the daily diet. Air-popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup; oil-popped popcorn has only 35 calories per cup. When lightly buttered, popcorn contains about 80 calories per cup. Here are some facts about popcorn you should know: 1) There has never been, nor is there currently, any genetically modified organism (GMO) popcorn or popcorn seed for sale in the U.S. or international markets. 2) Microwave popcorn does not contain perflourooctanoic acid. PFOA is some-

times used in grease-resistant coatings for paper, such as fast-food wrappers, candy wrappers and pizza box liners. The greaseresistant coating in the majority of microwave popping bags is not produced with PFOA. As always, read the label. 3) You should NEVER use a paper bag to make microwave popcorn. Plain and recycled papers often are made from unknown materials that could catch fire or interfere with microwave cooking technology. Use pre-packaged microwave popcorn or microwave-safe popcorn poppers, or the traditional stovetop method, or an electric popcorn popper. Here are my suggestions to put some flavorful POP into your plain popcorn!

Science in the

Jamestown Library JAMESTOWN

By MORGan GROVe JAMESTOWN LIBRARY Science class was always so much fun when I was a kid. We did cool experiments, like turning white flowers pink and blue with food coloring, and we made some crazy stuff, like slime and some small explosions (always contained and nothing too dangerous). It allowed for me to explore the world around me, touch it and interact with it. So many of my questions about the world were answered in science class. Like why I would never find the end of a rainbow or how the earth rotates to create night and day. As an adult I try to keep some childlike wonder about the world and continue learning about how the world works, and apparently I am not alone. The success of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Astrophysics for People in a Hurry shows that. He takes esoteric topics and breaks them down in a way that is not only under-

standable, but also funny and entertaining. There is also a growing desire to understand how our minds and bodies work. Books such as When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and The Brain by David Eagleman explain how our minds and bodies function to create you. This allows for a better understanding of the world as well as ourselves. Not only are factual science books gaining a wider audience, but so are science fiction novels. Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One combines old eighties video games with a futuristic technology to create Wade Watt’s dystopian world. There is a growing demand for accuracy in the science and technology presented in these novels. There is

a growing desire for accuracy and believability in this futuristic or alternate world. Continuing to explore and understand the world around us is important to keep that fascination, and instilling that desire to understand at a young age is important as well. Not only do we have a lot of book to explain the world to kids here at the library, but this week we are giving kids the ability to interact with science. Mad Science is coming to the library this Thursday to give kids a chance to get hands on experience with science. So, whether you are a kid or an adult we have all kinds of new ways to learn about the world and yourself here at the library.

You Decide: Why Can’t We Get The Economy Right By dR. MIke WaLden

My wife is a great cook, and she makes

fabulous varieties of soups. My favorite is her lentil soup. It’s both tasty and healthy! Sometimes my wife and I disagree over the temperature of the soup. Remember the Goldilocks saying about the soup not being too hot or too cold, but instead being just right? Well, my wife and I don’t see eye-to-eye over what is the “just right” temperature for soup since she likes it hotter than me. There’s a parallel between the Goldilocks story, my wife’s soup and the economy. It’s that we’d like to get the economy “just right” for everyone but usually appear to fail. One of the frequent questions I’m asked in my many public presentations is, “Why can’t smart economists and public policymakers get the economy ‘just right’?” As a way of answering this question, consider five big changes in the economy during the last 40 years, and how the changes have impacted groups of people differently. The five changes are the plunge in inflation, the drop in interest rates, the rebirth of the US energy sector, the spread of information technology and globalization. When I was hired by NC State University in 1978 the comprehensive (meaning it covers everything consumers buy) inflation rate was nine percent, and it would rise to almost 13 percent in 1980. Last year the comprehensive inflation rate was 1.4 percent. Although everyone’s

personal inflation rate differs based on what they buy, there has been a definite downward trend in the rate at which prices are increasing. A lower inflation rate is certainly good news for many people. It’s easier to budget future paychecks knowing the rise in the cost-of-living will be slower. It also means workers don’t need as much of a boost in their pay to keep pace with higher prices. But for debtors there’s a downside to lower inflation. Usually loans are paid back with a fixed dollar amount payment each period – typically each month. Inflation reduces the purchasing power – or value – of future dollars. So higher inflation allows debtors to repay loans with cheaper dollars. Paralleling the drop in the inflation rate has been a similar reduction in interest rates. In 1981 the 30-year fixed mortgage interest hit 18 percent! Today it is a little over four percent. Other interest rates have followed a similar path. Clearly lower interest rates make it easier for people to borrow money and fulfill their dreams of a home, a new vehicle or financing a college education. Are there no downsides to lower interest rates? Yes there are, for savers. What if you’re afraid of the stock market and want your money in a safe government or high-grade corporate bond. Good luck – the interest earnings are paltry with rates today barely above two percent - maybe four percent if you take some risk.

OK – I’m sure many you are thinking there’s no way I can argue about a downside to low oil and gas prices resulting from the almost unbelievable surge in U.S energy production. Counted by many as knocked-out 40 years ago, U.S. energy production (mainly oil and natural gas) has skyrocketed in the last decade, thereby allowing the share of our oil usage that is imported to be cut in half and for pump prices to hover around $2/gallon this summer. Lower gas prices help the family budget and give us more freedom to travel. But (you knew it was coming) low gas prices motivate many to buy larger vehicles and to avoid alternatively-powered vehicles that may be kinder to the environment. We’re simply not as motivated to conserve when prices are low. Likewise, who could find anything wrong with the IT (information technology) revolution? How could any of us function at work or at home without our smart phone, laptop, tablet and other techy-gadgets? Entire industries and new occupations – many of them in North Carolina – have sprung up around IT. But what if you work in the traditional bricks-and-mortar retail industry, or you’re a cabbie or you work in food service? Each of these industries are being threatened by IT competitors. Some economists expect up to half of today’s jobs will be downsized in coming decades as a result of technological innovations. Once considered the wave of the future,

there is now a robust debate about the pluses and minuses of globalization. In general, it is thought those with more advanced education (four-year college and beyond) have benefitted from the economic opportunities from greater international trade and interactions. It’s also documented large metro areas have also gained. But individuals without college degrees, and small town and rural regions, are perhaps worse-off than before the push to economically tie the world together. The major reason – in my view – that we can’t “get the economy right” is that “right” for one person, industry or region may be “wrong” for another. As hopefully illustrated with the five examples, one size doesn’t fit all in economics. Economic conditions and outcomes have varying impacts. This is why economics is so interesting – but also challenging and frustrating at the same time. For any economic situation, each of us has to decide if it’s a plus or a minus! What’s the best dog for small apartment? By saM MazzOTTa PAW’S COrNer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment building doesn’t allow dogs or cats, but I just found out from a neighbor (who was walking her cat outside) that the management does allow “therapy” pets or companion animals, with a doctor’s letter. What kind of dog is best for a small apartment, though? Sign me — Not a Cat Person DEAR NOT A CAT PERSON: There are a number of dog breeds you might consider for a companion pet, and I’m glad you’re taking the size of your apartment into consideration. Once you have the doctor’s letter and management approval, take some extra time — plenty of it — to consider what kind of companion animal you would like to make part of your family. A search online for small- and mediumsized breeds will give you a good over-

view of the different traits of each breed. Basenjis, for example, don’t bark — which is great if you don’t want to annoy your neighbors — but also are energetic and playful. Pomeranians and Chihuahuas can be big barkers and even somewhat aggressive. Bulldogs are impressive, but can suffer from specific health problems. Then of course, you can (and I hope you will) look at adopting a dog from your local shelter, whether purebred or a mutt. Dogs take quite a bit more attention and training than cats, of course. While they can make great companion pets, they will need daily walking and behavior training. Because they’ll likely spend more time indoors than outdoors, you’ll need to monitor their diet and make sure they get enough exercise.

By MaRk vasTO A SPOrtING vIeW Last week we learned that a few things we suspected might be true are, in fact, probably true: 1. R. Kelly runs a sex cult, and; 2. Roger Federer is the greatest champion that tennis, and maybe all of sport, will ever know. The Federer story is very hard to dispute. Here’s a kid who came out of Switzerland as a — get this — hothead, and calmed it down to the low burn of just winning the most majors in tennis history. Actually, reading off his list of accomplishments is quite easy because he’s literally rewritten the record books. He’s won 19 Grand Slam singles titles. He has been the top-ranked player for 302 weeks, 237 consecutive — both records. He has a habit of winning tournaments without dropping a set. He bookends careers. Remember Lleyton Hewitt and Pete Sampras? Federer ended their reigns. Remember Andy Roddick? Ditto. Now he’s 35 and he’s still running the table, beating guys like Rafa Nadal with

stunning acumen. Even Deadspin writes nice things about him. One of its recent columns pointed out how Federer endorses products that are way, way out of most people’s pay grade — Rolex, MercedesBenz, Credit-Suisse — and yet the guy remains likable. It’s true. He is a true sportsman, so it’s hard for anyone who likes sports to really root against him. He has a beautiful wife named Mirka, and whenever they cut to her in the box you feel yourself saying “good for you, Roger,” and you don’t quite know why. He has — get this — not one, but TWO sets of identical twins with her. Who does that? Roger Federer does, that’s who. I’ve always maintained that tennis is one of the least understood and underappreciated sports. It’s always suffered from an image problem, that of the stuffy, pinky-up, private-club set, when in reality, outside of boxing and MMA, it is the only major sport where you take somebody on one on one (unless it’s doubles or mixed doubles, but you get the point). A tennis player carries his or her own bags,

argues their own calls, has nowhere to hide when they need to collect themselves. (A bathroom break is met with howls of derision.) And while guys like John McEnroe have done remarkable jobs of remaining relevant, we haven’t really met up with a tennis champion quite like Federer. One imagines that Bjorn Borg, had he not suddenly retired at the top of his game, would have approached his greatness, but he did not. Instead, we, as viewers, have been given the real privilege of watching what some are calling a renaissance of Roger. His stunning win at Wimbledon would seem to be a bookend to his career. Only it’s not. Federer is still in the game, still winning, still making it look easy, still doing it with class and style. Of all the champions we’ve witnessed over the years — including Michael Jordan — nobody has put on a show like this guy has. If you’ve missed any of it, take heart ... there’s still plenty more to watch. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
