Sedgefield Colony Garden Club Hosts

Annual Holiday Home Tour Store displays, television commercials and even holiday lights twinkling in the windows of some neighborhood homes are sure signs that Christmas is on its way. The Sedgefield Colony Garden Club is preparing for Christmas with its annual Holiday Home Tour to be held Dec. 7 from 3-7 p.m. The tour includes a visit to three lovely homes in the Sedgefield community, which are all decked out for the Christmas season. This year’s event will feature the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lackey, Dr. and Mrs. Steven Gollehon and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Weeks. In addition to providing festive holiday decorating ideas, the tour offers an opportunity to purchase gifts for friends and family at the baked goods and gift sales. One example of items for sale is beautiful Christmas bows that members have created. “We are also going to make an effort to display information about the charities that will benefit from our tour,” said Ann Flynn, who, along with Jamie Gulledge, is co-chair of the event. “We want people to learn more about

them and feel good about supporting the two charities we have selected this year. That always warms the spirit.” This year’s recipients of the tour’s profits will be Feeding Lisa’s Kids and Peacehaven Community Farm, a home/farm for adults with disabilities. “These are really amazing groups,” Flynn said. “I invite everyone to check out their websites.” Mendenhall Homeplace, The Healing Garden at Wesley Long Hospital, YWCA of High Point and Hannah’s Haven have been among past organizations that benefited from Sedgefield Colony Garden Club’s Holiday Home Tour. The club was founded in 1962. It is purposefully limited

to a small group – less than 35 members, all homeowners in the Sedgefield community. “We are a social group,” Flynn noted. “No gardening experience is required. Our president this year is Stacy Miller.” In addition to sponsoring the Holiday Home Tour, club members participate in smaller charitable acts such as providing gift bags to Sedgefield Elementary School teachers and the local police department. They also have made gift bags for the Women’s ACC Golf Tournament, which has been held at Sedgefield Country Club during the last few years. Tickets for the Holiday Home Tour cost $20 and are available at The Soap Lady, Southern Roots and POSH Gifts. This year, prepaid tickets also may be purchased by email at SedgefieldHomeTour@gmail.com. The buyer will receive an electronic invoice and after it is paid with a credit card, tickets will be mailed. There is an option to purchase tickets at the door for an increased price of $25. To learn more about the Sedgefield Colony Garden Club Holiday Home Tour, check the group’s Facebook page.

LIFESTYLES

Area Deaths & Funerals Doris Mackie Berry Doris Mackie Berry of Jamestown NC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 20, 2017. She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on July 24, 1930, daughter of late George Alexander Mackie and Lizzie McDonald Mackie. She lived in Edinburgh, Scotland from age seven, until she traveled to the United States of America, in 1953, on a travel-work Visa, where she lived with her first cousins, Dorothy Smith and Margaret Lee, both of Miami, Florida. Doris met her late husband, Philip Allan Berry, when Phil’s mother Evelyn Berry, who was working for Pan American Airlines at the time with Doris, introduced the two. Phil had recently returned from two years overseas with the US Navy, and they were both looking for dance partners. Doris and Phil were married in 1957, in Miami Florida, and moved their family of five to Jamestown NC in 1966 when Phil accepted a position with the home office of Pilot Life Insurance Company. Doris became a citizen of the United States in 1968. The Berrys were active members of Jamestown United Methodist Church from 1966, until Phil’s passing in 2012. Doris was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother (Nana) aunt, and friend, and will be dearly missed. Doris’s strong faith in God and deep love for her family, friends, church family and community, are what made her the compassionate, generous, cheerful, positive, and fun-loving person that she will always be remembered as. She was quick to smile, had a kind word for everyone and loved to joke. Her relatives, friends, and care givers always felt loved by Doris. Doris graduated from high school at age fifteen and went on to a Business Secretarial College where she graduated with honors. She worked as a Secretary for the University of Edinburgh until traveling to the United States where she was a Secretary for 56 flight engineers for Pan American Airline, from 1953 until 1959. In addition to raising a family, Doris saw needs within the community, and with TG Madison’s help, opened the Jamestown United Methodist Thrift Store 45 years ago, which is now known as the JUMC Outreach Center. Her first goal was that each student at Jamestown Elementary School have shoes to wear. Many children were coming to school with no shoes or holes in their shoes in the 1970’s. Doris and Phil, along with Principal T.G. Madison, saw no reason that second hand shoes from members of their congregation could not be given and fitted to the students whom were less fortunate. That was just the beginning. The Thrift Store grew and became an amazing resource of clothing and household items donated, and then sold for affordable prices to the Jamestown community. What began as a small wooden building, a “Boy Scout hut”

that the troop had outgrown, was replaced years later by an 1800 square footage building with a full basement for storage. The Outreach Center still meets needs of the community today, and has grown to provide financial needs through missions both local and global. After many years of coordinating volunteers and working alongside the men and women of JUMC, Doris was honored to receive the Houston H. Williams Laity Service Award in June of 2003 for her dedicated service to her church and community. She was also active in the United Methodist Women organization, the JUMC Young at Heart group, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, when she wasn’t calling on neighbors as an Avon sales representative, which she also enjoyed for over eight years. During younger years Doris was on a bowling league, and played tennis well into her sixties. She and late husband Phil loved to dance, loved to travel, and saw many parts of the World together. In their retirement years, when they were not traveling or working at the Outreach Center, Doris and Phil spent time at their lake house on Lake Tillery in Albemarle, N.C. They opened their vacation home to relatives and friends, enjoying their roles as host and hostess, and creating beautiful memories to be cherished always. A special thank you to the excellent care that Doris received from the staff and care givers and volunteers at Brookdale High Point and Brookdale Palmer Park, Colorado Springs, as well as to the Brookdale Hospice organization, also in Colorado Springs, Co. Another special thanks to the faithful members of Jamestown UMC, the Circle of Hope, and the lifelong friends and members of the Austin Fortney Sunday School class, who continued sending cards, notes and care packages to Doris every week during the years she resided at the Brookdale Alzheimer’s Care facilities. Doris is survived by her son Allan McDonald Berry and grandson Nick Berry both of Grays River, WA; granddaughter Hannah Berry of Camas, WA; daughter Barbara Berry Sumner and son in law Tom Sumner of Colfax, N.C.; daughter Karen Berry Burney and husband Arlen Burney of Yoder, Colorado; and grandchildren, Heather and Sam Burney of Raleigh N.C. Doris is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, mostly in New York, Connecticut and south Florida. A memorial service for Doris will be held at Jamestown United Methodist Church at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jamestown Outreach Center c/o Jamestown United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

of dwindling like mine. Perhaps your children are marrying and starting families. Those new members need your family stories, too. New members need to hear what their wife or husband was like as a child. It’s good to know that nobody is perfect, that everybody makes mistakes, that this new family is full of love and laughter. Come to the library to check out a memoir like Driving Miss Norma, a true story about a ninety year-old woman and her son, his wife and their dog, all taking a road trip instead of undergoing the chemo, radiation, etc. that the doctors recommended. Author Lee Smith wrote Dimestore, a memoir about her parents, her childhood, two marriages, and her children. In it, she confesses that both her parents were mentally unstable and spent some time hospitalized. She makes the reader cry in the chapter that tells of her son’s mental illness and death. But she also makes us laugh when she tells funny stories about her life. Like wearing small turtles to school (real turtles clinging to her shirt.) As a child she ran free in the mountains of Virginia or she played in her dad’s store. She tells about falling asleep on the porch, listening to the old folks tell stories. Look through family photo albums to jog your memory. Tell your stories as you pass the turkey and stuffing. Happy holidays!

JAMESTOWN

We are about to enter the holiday season. Thanksgiving is tomorrow. Before long we will be exchanging Christmas gifts. After that comes New Year’s Day. All of these holidays are times that families gather for good food, good company, and reminiscing. Perhaps this is the reason that November is designated Family Story Month. As we age, more and more of our family are no longer with us. At family gatherings, it is important to remember our losses, but it is also important to remember what we have gained from them. Now we have to be the ones to tell the family stories. I liked it better when Grandma and Dad were the history keepers. We have to pass down our family history to our young ones. The only way to do that is to tell tales of when their father, grandfather or great grandparents were young. Children love to hear stories about themselves. Recently, while trying to distract my grandson, I told him about the day he was born. His favorite part was his first bath during which he howled. “Tell that part again, Nani.” He also likes the story of the glow-in-the-dark shoes that his father was afraid to wear. Parents seem so big and brave all the time. It is reassuring to children to know that their parents were afraid of things, too. Maybe your clan is expanding, instead

Family Week event,” said Andrea Dalporto, program manager for Family Service of the Piedmont at the Fairview Family Resource Center. “The school offered a wonderful setting so that families could mingle, as well as spend time browsing the hallways to learn about good health, parenting and other educational options.” Other partners for the event included the Southside Neighborhood Association, the United Way, the Piedmont Health Service and Sickle Cell Agency and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point. “We were honored to host the event,” said Angela Dawson, principal at Fairview Elementary. “Our school is truly a hub for the local community here in High Point’s Southside. Being able to bring families together for a meal and to offer support is great for everyone involved. The superhero theme really got the attention of kids and parents alike to focus on the importance of reading.” Plain and Fancy Catering from High Point provided the catering, including the turkey, stuffing and some sides. Families also brought many homemade dishes and

desserts to share and complement the meal. The Alliance for Strong Families and Communities created National Family Week held each November to help build community connections and honor those who strengthen families. They believe that children thrive when their families are strong, and families thrive when they live in communities that help them to succeed.

VOLZ - CONTINUED FROM THE FRONT park, flea markets, picnics, and even exercise events like yoga in the park. We have received numerous grants in the past few years to expand our signature “Walking with History” reputation. Citizens will soon begin to see this sidewalk construction extending our sidewalks and connecting more of our neighborhoods to our downtown and parks as we employ these grants received in the last few years. Our Jamestown Golf Park received its first renovation since it was established in the early 1970’s. We moved the park from a situation of seriously declining play with aging facilities to an outstanding, beautifully renovated golf course and clubhouse. We are now setting new records for rounds of play in a highly competitive environment. The clubhouse

and grill are attracting many new events like receptions, parties and meetings and we are seeing local citizens simply enjoying lunch in a beautiful environment. Our town has grown in a very progressive way over the past 16 years and I hope the positive improvements will continue going forward. I congratulate Lynn Montgomery and the new council as they continue to guide Jamestown to a bright and prosperous future. As our town continues to move ahead in this positive direction, in ten years we can look back and think, “Yes, it is just another beautiful day in Jamestown.” Thank you, Jamestown, for giving me 16 wonderful years! Regards, Keith L. Volz

* It was 20th-century French philosopher, author and political activist JeanPaul Sartre who made the following sage observation: “If you’re lonely while you’re alone, you’re in bad company.”

* Other than humans and apes, the only animal that has no tail is the Manx cat.

* It seems that the Mets would be hands-down winners of the prize for the shortest MLB team name, but they actually have one of the longest names. It’s just that not many people remember that the team’s full name is Metropolitan Baseball Club.

* You might not think that fruitcake — that muchmaligned holiday staple — and mahogany — the hardwood valued for its beauty and durability — have anything in common. You’d be wrong, though; the two items have the same approximate density.

* Those who study such things say that, as a whole, indoor cats prefer the taste

of fish, while outdoor cats prefer the taste of mice. * In parts of New England, porcupine liver was once considered to be a delicacy. * Saint Anthony the Great, an early Christian monk from Egypt, spent years living in a tomb in order to overcome temptation. This is doubtless why he’s now known as the patron saint of gravediggers. Thought for the Day: “Television’s perfect. You turn a few knobs ... and lean back and drain your mind of all thought. And there you are watching the bubbles in the primeval ooze. You don’t have to concentrate. You don’t have to react. You don’t have to remember. You don’t miss your brain because you don’t need it. ... You are in the man’s nirvana. And if some poor nasty-minded person comes along and says you look like a fly on a can of garbage, pay him no mind. He probably hasn’t got the price of a television set.” — Raymond Chandler

NCDOT TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF A GRADE SEPARATED CROSSING AT THE FRANKLIN BOULEVARD AND NORFOLK SOUTHERN “H” LINE RAILROAD CROSSING (722959A) AND CLOSURE OF THE O’FERRELL STREET RAILROAD CROSSING (722961B) IN GREENSBORO, GUILFORD COUNTY TIP PROJECT NO. P-5709 The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed project for construction of a grade separated crossing at the Franklin Boulevard and Norfolk Southern “H” Line railroad crossing (722959A) and closure of the O’Ferrell Street railroad crossing (722961B) in Greensboro. Grade separation means construction of a bridge of one mode of transport over the other, eliminating a crossing at the same level. The meeting will take place on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gateway Education Center, Purple Pod Multipurpose Room located at 3205 Wendover Avenue East in Greensboro. The purpose of this project is to remove existing at-grade railroad crossings and provide safety improvements along the Raleigh to Charlotte rail corridor. By providing access to safer crossings, the project will reduce train and vehicle conflicts. The public may attend at any time during the above mentioned hours. NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and listen to comments regarding the project. The opportunity to submit written comments will also be provided at the meeting or via phone, email, or mail by December 19, 2017. BY AMY ANDERSON “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (R) — Darius Kinkaid (Samuel L. Jackson) is a reckless assassin who has agreed to testify against his former employer and general bad guy, dictator Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), on the condition that his feisty psychopath wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) is let out of prison. All he has to do is get from London to The Hague without being shot, stabbed, blown up or otherwise murdered. Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds), once billed as the world’s best bodyguard, through a series of events is charged with Kinkaid’s protection and safe delivery to court. It’s a bounding ride full of buddy humor and sarcastic zingers, but both the charm and the action are delivered in full measure.

“Birth of the Dragon” (PG-13) — Cue up this one for date night with your kungfu-loving significant other to enjoy with a side of lo mein. It’s a fictionalized version of Bruce Lee’s early U.S. story: a young man returns to the country of his birth with big ideas and challenges the status quo. In this case, the status quo is the structure of teaching martial arts in 1960s San Francisco and master Wong Jack Man (Wu Xia); the challenge comes from a young, incredibly talented upstart Bruce Lee (Philip Ng), who wants to bring kung fu to the people. The epic battle is legend, and this is pure senti-

mentalized action. Billy Magnussen plays Steve McKee, a student who prods Lee into the showdown.

“Leap!” (PG) — Two hope-hearted orphans with Big Dreams — Felicie (voiced by Elle Fanning), who wants to be a ballet dancer, and Victor (Nat Wolf), her inventor bestie — set out to fake it until they make it in the big City of Lights. I’ll say there were some strange casting choices here: Felicie’s mentor (Carly Rae Jepson) turns out to be the janitor at a prestigious Parisian dance school. The bratty, pampered competition is voiced by Maddie Ziegler (of “Dance Moms” fame). Kate McKinnon is underused as the actual Dance Mom. In the end, I did not jete away from the couch, but I wasn’t captivated either. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
