Four ‘family’ members sign college letters By CAROL BROOKS NEWS FREELANCER cab1hp@gmail.com If two words could describe the four Ragsdale High School senior studentathletes who signed collegiate letters of intent on Nov. 20, those words would be family and friends. Sandra Geiselhart, Meredith McGill, Hope Carpenter and Madison Isaacson each mentioned the importance of family and friends as they spoke about their time at Ragsdale. Sandra Geiselhart committed to play soccer at UNC Charlotte in her junior year. “I loved the coaches. I knew I was going to have an important spot on the team. I love the campus and it’s close to home.” The attacking mid-center forward began playing soccer at age 4, swam for several years and briefly tried basketball and cheerleading. “She’s a very special soccer player and student,” said Hall of Fame soccer Coach Brien Braswell. “She eats, sleeps, drinks and dreams soccer. She lives the soccer lifestyle.”
Braswell noted that Geiselhart was the team’s leading scorer her freshman year when the school won the 4A Conference Championship and made it to the finals of the state championship. She was the team’s assist leader her junior year. Two additional daughters of Karen and Greg Geiselhart, Tess and Ellie, also play soccer for Ragsdale. Hope Carpenter thought she wanted to go to a “really, really big” school but was so impressed with the smaller Davidson College that she decided to forego the bigger school. “It was one of my last visits and I loved it. I loved the team – they get along so great, like sisters. That’s what I like about my team now. We’re like family. I was looking for another family.” Carpenter played about every other sport available growing up, including volleyball, basketball, dance gymnastics and softball. She decided to focus on swimming because of the year-round family aspect. Carpenter considers the butterfly and backstroke her favorites and the 100M backstroke as her best event.
Her parents are Carl and Kim. Meredith McGill was excited to learn that her swimming buddy Carpenter would join her at Davidson. She also looked at other schools but felt Davidson best fit her needs. “I applied to several other schools, but when it came to swimming, Davidson was always my No. 1 choice. I had met the coaches prior and they were very dynamic and I knew they were going to help me reach my goals in swimming.” McGill noted how much the swim team does together during their off-time. “It’s more than just swimming.” Carpenter said that she looks forward to having McGill there as support on the team. They started swimming together when they were 7 years old. “We started the sport and now we’re going to go on to the next level together,” McGill said. Short distance sprint freestyle is her favorite stroke with the 100M freestyle her best event. Her parents are Tim and Korina. “I feel very lucky to have

It’s a real honor to have coached both these ladies.” Madison Isaacson also committed to college in her junior year, this time for golf at James Madison University. “It’s been such an honor to coach Madison these four years,” said golf Coach Dan Turner. “When I think
about Madison I think of hard work – nobody outworks her. She’s at the range every day. “I like that she is competitive as a golfer, but she is also a nice person who is supportive of her teammates,” Turner said in 2015 of the then-sophomore Isaascson. She started playing in the 7th grade and the practice has led her to be medalist (low scorer) in many of her high school rounds. “My dad practices with
me every weekend and goes to every tournament with me,” Isaacson said. Parents Joanna and Jon have another daughter, Caroline, who is also on the Ragsdale golf team. Athletes as well as coaches teared up when they recalled their time at Ragsdale. All four athletes wore shirts from their new schools, but Isaacson was the only one who’s school name matched her own first name.
Solar energy system donated by Town The Town of Jamestown could be moving into the solar energy age for its facilities within the next few years. “Many municipalities are moving toward a more sustainable future,” said Town Manager Kenny Cole. “Renu Energy Solutions has come forth to donate a solar energy system for Wrenn Miller Park. They have placed a value of the system, including installation, at $6,940.” Will Grant, of Renu Energy Solutions, said the solar panels would cover power needs for the two shelters and other power connected to the meter. Renu Energy Solutions is based in Charlotte, but Grant is a resident of Jamestown. Cole pointed out that the solar energy system would be placed in the 2018-19 town budget and that he was in the process of getting quotes to incorporate solar energy to other town facilities. Advantages of solar energy include lower operating costs for the next 25-30 years and federal and state tax incentives. The Council unanimously accepted the donation. The long-anticipated Oakdale Road sidewalk project took another step toward implementation on Nov. 21 when the Town Council approved a budget amendment to transfer $135,000 from the General Fund to the Oakdale Sidewalk Phase III Capital Project Fund.
The funds are the 20 percent matching portion of the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant the Town has received. This portion of the project will add approximately 2,800 feet of sidewalk along Oakdale Road between Chimney Court and Jamestown Oaks Drive. A second budget amendment approved the Capital Project Ordinance and budget for the project, to include $135,000 (20 percent) from the Town and $540,000 (80 percent) from the federal government. This is a multiyear project. Phase II of the project, from the railroad to Chimney Court, was previously approved. Phase I is completed and runs from the Oakdale Road/East Main Street intersection to the railroad. In the past seven years, the Town has received over $3.5 million in grant funding from NCDOT for the Comprehensive Pedestrian Transportation Plan adopted in 2010. Planning and engineering for the “Lydia Sidewalk” along East Main Street is nearing completion as is the East Fork Road sidewalk and pedestrian bridge over Koonce City Lake. The Town has also been awarded funding for sidewalk improvements along West Main Street to Penny Road and down Penny Road to Koonce Lake, which will connect to the pedestrian bridge proposed by the City of High Point. Design and engineering work on that project is expected to begin see solar, page 7

Art at the airport GCS schools create special recycled art projects displayed at PTI airport By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER Norma@normabdennis.com Art is meant to be shared with others. That is Jennifer Pfeiffer’s philosophy and what she tells each of her art students at Ragsdale High School. “Showing your work to others is a form of expression,” she said. “It is part of being an artist. I try to explain to students that you have to validate what you do and why you do it. It is good to see how people can understand you through your projects.” That is why she knew it was important for her students to participate in a countywide school art project to create sculptures from recycled materials. The sculptures would be displayed at Piedmont Triad International Airport. “It was also a good opportunity
for the kids to learn to use resources already available,” Pfeiffer said. “This is a good skill to have because you don’t always have money for supplies.” Because she had just returned to school after maternity leave, Pfeiffer had little time to organize the project before it was due. She sent an email to the whole school requesting water bottles and received over 100 the first day. She also selected her first block Art I students to create the sculpture. Following the water theme selected for the sculptures, Pfeiffer’s students painted the bottles, cut them into strips and wove them into chicken wire for the background. Shower caps were used for jellyfish heads and spirals cut from bottles became jellyfish tentacles. Insulation material was sprayed onto wax paper and, when dry, was painted to resemble

coral. Everything was crafted together to form an under-the-sea display. “Students had to think crisply to do this project and had to reach out beyond their own little bubble,” Pfeiffer said. “They were motivated to work their hardest because other schools were also doing sculptures.” A total of 79 schools entered sculptures in the project with students from grade levels K-12 participating. The sculptures were installed in a large, drained fountain at the airport and will be on display until March. Also on display is a sculpture by local artist Frank Holder, which was crafted from PVC pipe and a laundry basket and titled “One that got away.” Nathan Street, GCS director of fine arts, and Leigh Ann Little, GCS supervisor of fine arts, met with see ART, page 2

Kids & Klaus, 2017
BY CAROL REED JAMESTOWN LIBRARY
Everybody loves a parade! And Jamestown has a good one every year on the first Sunday of December. That’s Sunday, December 3, at 3:00 P.M. The library’s annual Christmas party, “Kids ‘N’ Klaus,” will begin right after the Christmas Parade. We will have hot cider to drink. A Girl Scout troop will host a bake sale. Children can visit Santa Claus and tell him their wishes. Parents can take pictures of their children as they talk to Santa in the auditorium. Mrs. Claus will read Christmas stories to families. Millis Road Elementary School chorus will provide holiday music around 4:30. We’ll have some of our fabulous baskets (Thank you, Linda, Jean, and Ginny!) for sale by the Friends of the Library, and $5-a-bag sale going on in our book sale rooms. Make a Christmas center piece, lots of ornaments, and holiday cards. Miss Sparkle will help with the

glitter crafts. Then head to another room for edible crafts. Make it and take it, or eat it here. It’s all good. Visit us for the biggest Christmas bash in town! After the party ends around 5:30, Jamestown will light the Christmas tree in front of our lit fountain. It will be beautiful! A starry night sky will (we hope) add to the magic. Our Wish Tree has begun. The library needs your help to make this book drive a success. Please consider donating a book in honor of, or in memory of, someone as a gift to the library. Each year our collection grows because of the generosity of our patrons. We put a book plate in the front of each book, to acknowledge the donor. Why not add your name to our collection?
Local author Julia Ebel will again be leading her very popular wreathmaking workshop on Monday, December 4, from 2-4 PM. She began these annual workshops after writing Mama’s Wreaths, a calm, beautiful story about a mountain woman who made wreaths to earn extra money at Christmas time. Participants leave with a hand-made wreath and memories of their own old-fashioned Christmas. It is Christmas movie time at the library. On Saturday, December 16, The Polar Express will take families on a magical train trip to the North Pole on our large wall/screen in the auditorium. Wear your pajamas and come prepared to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Do you still believe? Can you still hear Santa’s magical sleigh bell? The library will be closed for the Christmas holidays from Saturday, December 23, until after Tuesday, December 26. Celebrate the holidays with us at the library on the corner and up the hill. Happy December!
ART CONTINUED FROM FRONT Cheryl Stewart, arts program manager at PTI Airport during the summer to discuss the project. Holder talked to art teachers during a kickoff meeting in August and challenged them to create the sculptures from recycled material or items that cost no more than $10. “The county formed a committee of teachers to select a theme,” Little said. “Reference was made to Holder and artists Willie Cole and Bryant Holsenbeck, who make art from recycled materials. A lot of elementary and middle school teachers drew inspiration from Dale Chihuly, a world-renowned artist who creates chandeliers out of glass.” Millis Road Elementary was one of the schools that was inspired by the work of Chihuly. School art teacher Tammy Larrick and third grade teacher Caryn Barricks decided to incorporate the GCS art sculpture project with an interdisciplinary unit. “It began with the idea of perseverance and how to convey that through story or artwork,” Larrick said. “A student gave me the book, The Water Princess

It is a book based on the childhood experience of supermodel, Georgie Badiel. She grew up in Burkina Faso and had to travel miles by foot to gather the family’s water supply each day. Today, she uses her fame and a foundation she created to provide clean water wells for Burkina Faso.”
Area Deaths & Funerals
Millis Road has a connection to the Summit Church that meets at Ragsdale High School. The church has a team that goes to Burkina Faso yearly to help build wells. “Mrs. Barricks and I wanted to tie all of these elements together into a service-learning project,” Larrick said. “We decided
to read the book to the children and introduce the PTI Airport project. “We looked at artwork from Dale Chihuly and students recognized a connection between his glass sculpture forms and our water bottle forms, as well as a connection between our alltoo-easy access to water and the lack of water in Burkina Faso. Students created a Dale Chihuly-inspired chandelier, entitled ‘The Water Princess,’ after the book.” The artwork contrasts the appearances of both dirty and clean water. It hangs on the first lamppost on the left ramp to the fountain area. Millis Road students have invited students from Jamestown Middle and Ragsdale High schools to join them in a weeklong penny race in the spring. The money collected will go toward a clean well for water drinking in Burkina Faso. “The purpose of this project had many layers,” Larrick said. It helped students understand the importance of perseverance and informed them about the need for clean water in areas such as Burkina Faso. It also helped them understand the connection between art and other disciplines. “Students have enjoyed every moment of this adventure. While making our sculpture, one student

I can’t believe we get to do this.’” Sixth grade art students at Jamestown Middle School created a waterfall flowing out of a recycled can into the bottom of the ocean and various sea creatures, seaweed and coral entirely out of water bottles. Several seventh and eighth grade students helped with the final construction. Art teacher Jennifer Creef began the project by reading the book The Water Princess and discussing access to clean water and plastic water bottle consumption. “Students created sketches of their ideas for building a sculpture out of water bottles,” Creef said. “Requirements included that it could withstand the winter outside, be created by materials available in the art room or

It reminds people to keep our water and oceans clean.” The JMS project is seven feet tall, about 14 feet long and nine feet wide. “We take advantage of access to clean water,” Creef said. “In response to the project, students will be starting a school-wide awareness campaign in January.” Sculptures from the 79 schools are currently on display at the airport, outside in the large fountain area near the third entrance to the baggage claim. Employees of the town now have a formal updated Personnel Policy to refer to. The policy was originally discussed at the December 2016 council meeting and tabled until the January 2017 meeting. However, it was not on the January agenda and, thus, not discussed since December 2016. It was re-presented at the October Town Council meeting; however, since Council members requested time to scrutinize the 114-page document, the vote was tabled until the November meeting, where it was unanimously approved. A Christmas Party with Purpose By angela shelf medearis kitchen diva If you love to entertain, but feel pressured by the holiday rush, why not host a party with a purpose? A tree-trimming party is one of the easiest ways to have a fun gathering for family and friends while getting some of your holiday decorating done. It’s best to schedule your party early in December, before the holiday crush of shopping and holiday events are in full force. If possible, give your guests at least two to four weeks notice.
Preparing for the party: * Set up your tree and string it with lights before your guests arrive. Clear out the area around the tree so everyone has easy access to hang the ornaments. * Add festive garlands or pine cone roping around the fireplace, over the doors and throughout the house. Add colorful ornaments in decorative glass bowls and vases and place them around the room. Scatter wrapped Christmas candies on the tables. * To give your home a holiday aroma, place a few cinnamon sticks or 2 table-
spoons of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of vanilla and 3 cups of water in a pot and bring it to a boil. Play your favorite holiday music to set the mood. * Fill an assortment of baskets, tins or decorative boxes with red, green, gold or white tissue paper or colorful shredded paper and carefully place your ornaments in the baskets along with hooks or ribbon to hang them on the tree. If your ornament collection includes treasured heirlooms, hang them yourself, either before guests arrive or wait to hang them until after they’ve left.
* Ask your guests to decorate an ornament or two and hang them on the tree. Have the kids cut out ornaments from construction paper and decorate the front with markers, sticker and glitter. You also can make and bake your own ornaments (see recipes below for Cinnamon Dough and Salt Dough Ornaments) or you can buy plain wooden ornaments from a craft store. Have your guests decorate them with paints or markers and write their names and the date on the back. * To make old-fashioned garlands, set-up large bowls of popcorn or cranberries, large sewing needles and spools of heavy red, gold or green thread for guests to use to string the decorations for the tree. Thread the needles before your guests arrive, but do not cut the thread from the spool. It will take a lot of thread for the popcorn garland to cover an entire tree. It’s best to slide the piece of popcorn or cranberry to the end of the thread to prevent knots. Make sure that it is well-secured, so that popcorn or cranberries won’t fall off, and then gently cut the thread. * Set a table with simple finger foods and appetizers with a winter or Christmas theme, or purchase platters from your local grocery store or gourmet deli. * Serve a variety of drinks, including hot chocolate, coffee, eggnog, cider punch and water. * Purchase some mini Christmas stockings as part-
ing gifts. Fill them with a selection of holiday chocolates or peppermint sticks, or for the children, a Christmas puzzle or holiday coloring book with crayons. Remember, relax, have fun, make memories, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! CINNAMON ORNAMENTS 3/4 cup applesauce 1 cup cinnamon 1 tablespoon ground cloves 1 tablespoon nutmeg 1.
