Epiphany – another opportunity to celebrate By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer

Principal Brian Muller watches as students and staff tape him to a wall. When the chair is removed he is fully suspended.

Students duct tape principal to wall

Students at Southwest Elementary School earned the opportunity to duct tape Principal Brian Muller to a wall after surpassing their United Way fundraising goal for the year. The school raised more than $7,700, up more than $2,000 from last year. On Jan. 6, students proceeded to tape Muller to the wall in an elevated position. Of course there was lots of laughter associated with the activity, proving once again, helping others (donating to United Way) can be fun (taping the principal to a wall).

Town’s financial report shows positive signs By CAROL BROOKS Editor In December, the Town of Jamestown issued its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending 20152016, and things are looking good. The report detailed local demographics, current and upcoming projects and financial highlights. Jamestown has higherthan-average income levels, according to the report. “Data reported in the 2010 Census shows a median household income of $79,889 in Jamestown, as compared to $46,288 in Guilford County,” the report reads. “According to the 2010 Census data, approximately 63 percent of the adult residents (16 years and older) of the Town of Jamestown are in the labor force. This is down from nearly 73 percent (from) 2000.” While some of the

decrease can be attributed to unemployment, nearly 40 percent of residents are retired or on Social Security. Unemployment in 2010 was 4.2 percent, up from 2.5 percent in 2000. The 2010 percentage is lower than the 2016 rate in Guilford County of 5.4 percent, which itself is much lower than the 2010 figure of 11.5 percent. Although the figures have undoubtedly changed in 14 years, the report used the 2002 Economic Census, which stated the town had 145 establishments, with 1,201 paid employees. Manufacturing businesses comprise 71 percent of that figure. There is potential growth at the Koury Corporation projects at Jamestown Parkway and Guilford College Road within the next five years. Jamestown remains primarily a bedroom community to Greensboro and High Point. According to the 2010 Census data, only 12 percent of residents worked in town. That number is down from 18 percent of residents who worked in town as reported in the 2000 Census.” The report also states, “Median home values were

reported at $217,300 and median home rental rates were listed as $667 per month in the 2010 Census.” Interim Town Manager Cookie Billings and Finance Officer Judy Gallman made note of the number of projects going on in the town and the financing/grant opportunities available for these projects: • construction of sidewalks along Oakdale Road; • construction of sidewalks along East Fork Road and a pedestrian bridge truss over Koonce City Lake, estimated to begin in early 2017; • Lydia Trail (sidewalk) from Yorkleigh Lane to the existing sidewalk on East Main Street, estimated to begin in early 2017; • water main replacement on West Main Street from Dillon to Oakdale roads, scheduled to be completed in fiscal year 2017; • construction of the Water and Sewer Maintenance Facility (Public Works building) on Harvey Road, expected to be completed in fiscal year 2017; and • extension of Jamestown’s public utilities to the town’s extraSee FINANCIAL, page A5

Martin Luther King Day Closing Town Hall will be closed Jan. 16 for Martin Luther King Day.

The majority of the Dennis family was visiting other family members at Christmas and decided to share its celebration of the holiday in Jamestown on Jan. 6, often called Old Christmas or Epiphany. The tree was still trimmed in the home of Norma Dennis, waiting for family members to arrive from near and far. Unfortunately Mother Nature decided she had waited long enough to blast the state with a blanket of wintery weather making driving home after such a celebration hazardous. Although the Dennis celebration was placed on hold, the holiday was not. As always it serves as an additional reminder of the love God sent down in the form of a baby in a manager, a child who would change the course of history and provide access to Him. The following is a repeat of a “Note from Norma” article printed in the Jamestown News in 2016. It details how one family has celebrated Epiphany in the past. Perhaps it will inspire you to continue your own Christmas celebration a bit longer next year. Continuing the Christmas season The lights on the Christmas tree twinkled brightly, festive dinnerware

Council to discuss annexation petition By CAROL BROOKS Editor The Jamestown Town Council will start the new year with a public hearing regarding annexation at its Jan. 17 meeting. The hearing will consider a contiguous annexation petition from Koury Corporation for property located at 4301 Millis Road. This is the location of the

new apartment buildings across from Millis Road Elementary School. Also on the agenda is the audit report for the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2016. The Council will continue to review the town’s Personnel Policy and present an overview report of duties and responsibilities of the department heads. The Town Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Guilford County residents now have an upgraded way of receiving urgent and important information through cell phones, text messages, home phone and email. “G.E.A.N.I.,” the Guilford Emergency Alert, Notification, and Information System will send public safety messages to all residents and businesses within Guilford County. The system provides time sensitive, geographically-based messages about evacuations, shelter-in-place incidents,

severe weather response and recovery efforts, law enforcement events and other urgent incidents that affect safety. As an example: Recently, an armed subject was in the area of Highway 62 and Hunt Road and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office wanted to notify residents. Using G.E.A.N.I., the Sheriff’s Office identified an area of concern and sent voice, text and e-mail alerts to people with addresses in the affected area. Persons and businesses with traditional landline

phone numbers published in local phone books are automatically enrolled in G.E.A.N.I., and will receive notifications pertaining to the geographic area of the address associated with the phone number. Unpublished landline numbers, cellular and VoIP telephones are not automatically added to the system database. Persons wishing to receive notifications on these numbers, or to receive alerts via text and e-mail must self register for the G.E.A.N.I. system at www.readyguilford.org.

JACK

This week’s pet is Jack, a male black rabbit. We are unsure of his age. Jack is very sweet and friendly. He came to the shelter as a stray in December and is ready to find his forever home. Jack would go great with any family. Rabbits are great and easy pets. They still need exercise and daily care. You can litter train a rabbit. Rabbits are also easy pets to teach children on how to respect pets and take care of an animal. This animal and others may be seen at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, 4525 W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, during business hours. The phone number is 336641-3400. The shelter is open Monday and Wednesday-Saturday 12-6 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Closed Tuesday.

Unattended running cars theft targets Don’t be tempted to warm up the car by leaving it running with the key in the ignition. An unattended running car can be stolen quite quickly. All the thief has to do is look for a vehicle that is running with no one in the car. In a matter of seconds, the thief is driving off in the

car, no hotwiring required. Don’t get a false sense of security by using a remote to lock the car while the engine is running. Even locked vehicles with key in the ignition are easier to steal than vehicles that are locked with no keys visible. In this scenario, the thief only needs to break a

ing the car in your driveway or letting it idle while you are making a quick dash into a store, you make it easy for thieves to take to your vehicle by leaving it running with the key in the ignition.

Pastor looks forward to serving her first church By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer After waiting through a lengthy search for a new pastor, members of the congregation at Sedgefield Presbyterian Church on Wayne Road in Greensboro feel confident the church has the right person for the job. “Pastor Kim is a very warm and caring person,” said John Stone, chair of the SPC Pastor Nominating Committee. “Her passion for outreach complements the focus of our church.” Pastor Kim Priddy began serving the church on the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2016 and is excited to be part of such a mission-minded congregation. “The church’s involvement in the community is what drew me here,” Priddy said. “I am thrilled to join a church already doing hard work in this area. One of the members told me, ‘We are small in members but mighty in heart.’” Priddy looks at the many ministry programs in which church members are involved and cannot help but agree. “There is such an opportunity to grow here on seeds already sown,” she said. “A church should extend outside its walls.” As a child of about

Sharing her first Christmas with the congregation of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church as its pastor was exciting for Pastor Kim Priddy. 10, Priddy recalls hearing stories about Jesus in Vacation Bible School and being stirred inside to hear more. In high school she felt called into ministry. While her family did not outright discourage her, they also did nothing to encourage her desire. “There also were not many role models of females in the pulpit,” Priddy admits. “I got a degree in business at the University of North

Carolina Greensboro and worked in banking and as a stock broker from 19911998.” When her twin boys were born prematurely, Priddy curtailed her financial work to part time, then stopped after her daughter was born. Active as a family at church, Priddy served on various committees before accepting a position as children’s director at Westminster Presbyterian

Highway Patrol urges caution during winter weather North Carolina was hit with a blanket of snow over the weekend. In anticipation of the incoming winter weather, the Highway Patrol requested that motorists use caution when traveling throughout several portions of the state. Driving conditions are still hazardous with snow melting and refreezing, often causing the possibly of black ice. Because of the amount of snow the Triad received, precautions provided at the beginning of the storm, still apply and should be remember for any wintery weather conditions. Driving considerations • Leave early – allow more travel time; expect delays. • Reduce speed – driving at a lower speed enables the ability to stop and allows for greater reaction time if approaching hazards within the roadway. • Increase distance between vehicles – it takes significantly longer to stop on snow covered or icy roadways.

• Clear all windows on your vehicle prior to travel – having unobstructed vision is vital to avoid running off of the road or becoming involved in a collision. • Illuminate your vehicle’s headlamps. • Use caution on bridges and overpasses as they are susceptible to freezing before roadways. • Avoid using cruise control – cruise control can cause the vehicle’s wheels to continue turning on a slippery surface when speed needs to be decreased. Be prepared • Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas in the event you are stranded for an extended period of time. • Charge your cellular phone prior to departure. • Take a blanket. • Notify a family member or a friend of your travel plans prior to departure – if your travel is interrupted, someone will know.

Church in Greensboro. “The church had a female pastor and I got to see what it looked like for a woman to be in a leadership role,” Priddy said. “They encouraged me to go to seminary. I attended Wake Forest Divinity School while working part time in the children’s ministry at First Presbyterian Church. “My daughter was 10 and the boys were 13 at the time. I think it was a

good opportunity for them to see that it is important not to give up on your dreams.” Priddy also found support from members of New Creation Presbyterian Church and its pastor, the Rev. Frank Dew. He became a friend and mentor helping Priddy understand the role of a church in a community setting, social justice work and how to give a prophetic voice to what it means to really love your neighbors. After graduating from seminary in May of 2014, Priddy began working at First Baptist Church in Greensboro as its community outreach minister. “I was tethered to this area because of my family,” she said with a smile. Priddy now has the job she felt called to as a youth. The congregation at Sedgefield Presbyterian will hold a special service of ordination and installation for her on Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend. The Rev. Dew will preach during the service and the Pastor Nominating Committee will participate as well. Priddy has asked nominating committee members to serve as a pastor discernment committee for the next 12 months; providing feedback to her as she begins her first pastorate. Priddy envisions three

main goals for the church. She hopes to continue the community involvement the church has and make sure the congregation is aware of the impact it is making. She also wants to inspire others to get involved. She would like to build upon the children and youth programs and help the faith community as a whole grow spiritually and in Biblical education. Lastly, Priddy hopes the congregation will feel good about asking others to come to SPC to worship. Priddy noted that people come to church to grow in their faith, but the benediction of worship calls them to go outside the church walls and live out their faith. “I am excited about being at Sedgefield Presbyterian,” she said. “People have welcomed me and I feel at home. I think God has prepared me for the past 45 years to be here.” Sedgefield Presbyterian has Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and worship at 11 a.m. To learn more about the church, check its website at www.sedgefieldpresbyterian. org. or look for its Facebook page.

People with flu symptoms should avoid visiting hospitals Cone Health asks that anyone who has flu symptoms not visit friends or family who are in the hospital. Influenza can be very dangerous – or even deadly – to people in hospitals. “People in the hospital are usually recovering from surgery or battling diseases that leave their immune system weakened,” said Melissa Morgan, RN, and Cone Health systemwide director of Infection Prevention. “If you have flu symptoms, please call or Skype to let your family member or friend know that you care for them. We

want to keep the flu out of our hospitals.” Cone Health has seen the number of people seeking care because of fevers, chills and that feeling of “being hit by a truck” increase in recent days. About 6 percent of people seeking care in Cone Health emergency departments have flu-like symptoms. That number was around 5 percent a week ago. Most flu cases run their course in several days and symptoms can be helped with over-the-counter medications. For individu-

als who experience fever that lasts for several days, Cone Health recommends that they contact their physician or visit a Cone Health urgent care center. More information about the flu is available from the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov/ flu.

Of course this information applies to all hospitals, rest homes or individual homes – especially those with older or younger residents. If in doubt as to whether or not you are contagious, stay at home.

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Make a resolution to get involved We’re already into 2017, but it’s not too late to make another New Year’s resolution. For Jamestown residents, I’d suggest making a resolution to attend the Town Council meetings at 6:30 p.m. every third Tuesday each month. In addition, the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meets sporadically the first Monday at 6 p.m. and the Planning Board meets sporadically the second Monday at 6:30 p.m. All meetings are in the council chambers at Town Hall and are open to the public. Why attend the meetings? So you know what’s happening in Jamestown

Babbling Brooks and have the opportunity to influence decisions made by these groups. Several years ago, the Town rezoned many areas, including the original Forestdale neighborhood. The rezoning went unnoticed by Forestdale residents until there was a movement to construct a fast-food restaurant on the site of the old Potter House. Residents were enraged

MOMENTS IN TIME – The History Channel • On Jan. 11, 1989, after eight years as president of the United States, Ronald Reagan gives his farewell address. Reagan declared that the key to leadership was a return to “common sense.” • On Jan. 12, 1995, Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, is arrested for conspiring to kill Louis Farrakhan, who she believed was responsible for the assassination of her father in 1965. • On Jan. 13, 1842, a British army doctor reaches the British sentry post at Jalalabad, Afghanistan, the lone survivor of a 16,000-strong Anglo-Indian expeditionary force that was massacred in the Khyber Pass in its retreat from Kabul. • On Jan. 14, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issues Proclamation No. 2537, requiring aliens from World War II-enemy countries – Italy, Germany and Japan – to register with the Department of Justice. Under increasing pressure from California politicians and others, Roosevelt also signed an executive order to remove all Japanese Americans to internment camps. • On Jan. 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the firstever world championship football game. Since postseason college games were known as “bowl” games, it was suggested that the new AFL/NFL pro championship be called the “Super Bowl.” • On Jan. 16, 1970, star centerfielder Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals files suit to protest baseball’s player reserve clause, which prevented players from moving to another team unless they were traded. The Supreme Court ruled against him in a 5-3 decision in 1972. • On Jan. 17, 1893, on the Hawaiian Islands, American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow the Hawaiian monarch and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. The coup occurred with the knowledge of the U.S. minister to Hawaii, and 300 U.S. Marines were called, allegedly to protect American lives.

that they had not been notified of the rezoning, but if they had attended meetings, they probably would have known. In recent months, several Jamestown residents have contacted our newspaper to complain about the manner in which the former town manager was dismissed and also to complain about the salary being paid to the interim manager. None of

the people who contacted us attended the Council meetings to voice their concerns. This may be a small group of people who have reacted to recent events, but their concerns still need to be heard at the Council meetings – in a face-to-face setting with the elected representatives. Per N.C. General Statute 160A-81.1, “The council shall provide at least one period for public comment per month at a regular meeting of the council.” In Jamestown, there are two times on the agenda when the public is allowed to speak, providing they sign up prior to the meeting.

Basically just sign up when you get to the meeting. It’s very simple. The public is also invited to speak during the public comment portion of public hearings without signing up. This gives citizens the opportunity to provide input before a decision is made. In both occasions, however, if the Council is asked a question, they are not required by law to respond. Even though the Town Council is not required to respond to public comment, the members have heard the opinion of the speaker and have the opportunity to take action at a later time. If residents don’t go to

the meetings and voice opinions, then they have no right to complain about the results. Most meetings are attended by just this reporter. Yes, the meetings are often boring but usually informative about zoning issues, annexation, policy, events or other upcoming actions – items that influence how the Town of Jamestown affects the lives of its citizens. So, make it a New Year’s resolution to attend the meetings held by the governing boards of the town. You might learn something. The Town Council meets Jan. 17. See you there.

her stepmother’s determination to institutionalize him. Both Jess and the stepmother know that the likely outcome for Adam in a state institution will be radical medical treatments including lobotomy and sterilization. Jess believes such treatments will destroy the Adam who has become important to her. As Adam comes to understand what is in store for him in a state institution, he becomes desperately sad. After a walk together along the French Broad River, Adam disappears and Jess runs away. When Adam’s body is found downriver, the absent Jess becomes a murder suspect, and the novel’s story becomes, in part, a murder mystery. But it also becomes sev-

eral other stories. Jess’s adventures as she makes her way from western North Carolina to a small town in Alabama could be a separate novel. On a months-long journey, she is a girl on the run, walking and hitchhiking along the French Broad and through forests and back roads of North Carolina and Georgia to Alabama. Hungry, dirty, wet and tired, she steals food and clothes, sleeps on the ground and in barns, and resists threatened sexual assaults, all the while trailed by a mysterious man who drives a car with a mangled “I like Ike” bumper sticker that reads “ike Ike.” Jess’s destination is Lula, Ala. A man who was a dear friend of Jess’s dead mother lives in a boarding house there. As Jess settles in to a warm welcome from her mother’s friend and the other residents of the boarding house, another story begins. I should say other stories. After Jess moves in, the residents interact as if they were a part of a television series. There are wonderful characters: Jess’s mother’s friend, the boarding house owner, a retired professor, a struggling newspa-

perman, a beloved cook and two little boys whose father has disappeared. The characters’ minor squabbles and romances show Jess their humanity, which shows again when all the adults bond together to keep Social Services from sending the little boys to an orphanage in Birmingham. A brief romance between Jess and the newspaperman is a guide to yet another story. Before Jess ran away from North Carolina, she had fallen in love with a fireman, Sam, who then was called to fight in Korea. Sam is Jess’s first love. She treasures his letters and reads them over and over, even while on the run to Alabama. How will the brief fling with the newspaperman affect the romance with Sam? What impact will the terror of war have on Sam and Jess? The poignant answers to these questions bring a climax to this story. How all these stories blend with Adam’s tragedy to make a novel, and how the murder mystery is solved are questions that can only be answered by reading the book. Thanks to Cox’s lovely writing, that task was for me a very pleasant one.

Spain (25), Costa Rica (28) and Thailand (34). Each country was ranked on 13 areas, consolidated into four key points: enabling environments, income security, health status and personal capability. Yet the whole story about a country might depend on which list you read. For example, while the Global

AgeWatch Index ranks Australia at No. 17, another less-scientific study ranks it in fifth place. And the Costa Rica in 28th place becomes the No. 1 spot in another list. If you’re searching online for information about retirement locations, beware. Consider the source of the information. Read the fine print. If kudos go to a country because it has an easy visa and residency process, that doesn’t tell you what it will be like once you live there. If a “study” was written by an investment company

telling you what your likely monthly costs will be, that’s fine, but it doesn’t tell you about the quality of life and health care. Facing lobotomy and other stories When the actions of a mentally challenged teenaged boy begin to frighten other children and alarm their parents, what should be done? By the boy’s family? By the state? Is it time to institutionalize the boy? Are there medical procedures that can eliminate his offensive and dangerous conduct? These questions and these situations can tear families and communities apart. Award-winning poet and novelist Elizabeth Cox, formerly at Duke and more recently at Wofford College, deals with such challenges in her latest novel, A Question of Mercy. Set in the North Carolina of the early 1950s, we learn the family’s side of this situation through the voice of Jess Booker, the teenaged stepsister of Adam, who suffers from a disabling mental condition. Jess’s mother is dead. When her widowed father married Adam’s mother, Jess became Adam’s unwilling and uncomfortable caregiver. As the relationship develops, she warms to Adam and becomes his advocate, arguing against

Where to live in retirement Where’s the best place to retire? In your state or hometown or right where you are? The answer might not even be in the United States. The 2015 Global AgeWatch Index is an eye-opener. First on the list is Switzerland as the best place for older people to live. It was followed by Norway, Sweden and Germany. So where on the list is the United States? Number nine, right behind Iceland and Japan. Some of the typical warm-weather retiree countries ranked as followed:

Spiritual organization offering clergy ordination By JANE WHITEHORNE Staff Writer

EPIPHANY – continued from front which spreads its fragrance throughout a room. These gifts represent spirituality and allow the kids to spread the love of God by developing a deeper meaning to their own spiritual lives or by helping them bless and encourage others. Examples are Adventure in Odyssey tapes when they were younger, Christian music CDs, Bible covers or age-appropriate devotional books. This group of gifts has also included a teapot to practice hospitality, a gift card to the Dollar Store to honor a child’s desire to share with others, postage stamps to connect with and encourage friends and a book titled #Struggles – Following Jesus in a SelfieCentered World. “The spiritual gifts are a way to keep the focus on Jesus, the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place,” Dawn said. “But we try to look at good characteristics developing in our children and get gifts to encourage those.” Myrrh picks up the practical side of giving with such items as bedding, pajamas, an electric razor or a fun-looking hat. “We don’t give socks and underwear, but something else useful,” Dawn said with a smile. “One year our daughter got a camera as her myrrh gift because she needed it for a photography class. On the financial side, the Town exceeded liabilities and deferred inflows of resources by $28,775,667. But his sister Kelton enjoys the Epiphany tradition. “It is something to look forward to after Christmas,” she commented. Our family completed Epiphany this year by watching a video by Louie Giglio called The Twelve Words of Christmas. (“For unto you is born a savior, which is Christ the Lord.”) This was my first Epiphany celebration with family members and I found it a great way to end the Christmas season. Now, if I could just talk my boss into making Epiphany an extra vacation day, the entire idea would be perfect. Norma B. Dennis can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

the Christ child. Begun in the 4th century and continued into the 19th century, the celebration on Jan. 6 was often as big as that on Christmas Day. For the Patafie family of Jamestown, whose Epiphany celebration I attended (in 2016), Jan. 6 has become the day on which the parents give their Christmas gifts to their children. “It started for practical reasons,” noted my daughter Dawn. “We usually traveled at Christmas and it kept us from having to carry so many gifts back and forth to our home. It also provided an intimate family Christmas celebration for us. “I wanted a day that was special and not just random and I appreciate that my kids are not overwhelmed by materialism on Christmas day.” To represent the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that the Wise Men presented to Jesus, Dawn and her husband Brian give their children three gifts. Gold is extravagance – not necessarily the most costly gift, but one that fills the child’s desire. Past examples have included Legos, a fashion design set, pogo stick, unicycle, headphones, hockey equipment, video games or electronics – even a gift of pet rats. Frankincense was traditionally burned as incense,

to LEWA. Mainstream religions have doctrines, which define specific behaviors and practices. That fact feels limiting to some and sends them on a journey looking for something different. Raised by her agnostic schoolteacher parents, Sears was encouraged to be creative and explore new things. She said she was very intuitive as a child, more aware of the energy emanating from others, something that has continued into adulthood. After graduating from Ragsdale High School, she studied English and developmental and family psychology at Appalachian State University. She became a teacher and began her own spiritual journey. She was led to healing therapies, like Reiki, and to the founding of LEWA. “My relationship with spirit,” said Sears, “is the primary drive in all things for me.”

Ever thought about becoming a minister but the amount of time and education required prohibited your pursuit? Or perhaps mainstream religion doesn’t speak to the faith you hold? There is an alternative path for those seeking to serve others as ordained clergy. On Jan. 13, The Light and Energy Workers Association will be conducting an ordination at Ohana Arts and Wellness Center, 615 Greensboro Road, High Point. The Light and Energy Workers Association (LEWA) is a church founded in 2004 by Margo Ross Sears, a 1985 graduate of Ragsdale High School. It is a non-profit, non-denominational, multi-faith and interfaith spiritual organization. “In 2004, I lived in Greensboro and was a prolific master Reiki teacher,” said Sears. “I taught over 300 people and some came to me saying they wanted community with other people like themselves, not just their classmates. We all have individual belief systems, but they were fascinated by other people’s belief systems. These people are open-

an altar with one person lecturing once a week. That is not what we do.” However, regular meetings are held monthly in Oak Island, N.C., and more sporadically in various locations in the Piedmont Triad. Ordination is conducted yearly and clergy are ordained for life, unless they choose to resign or are dismissed by the organization. To be ordained, persons must be 18 years of age or older with no outstanding criminal record. Sears screens applicants prior to and follows up after ordination. Once ordained, pastors can perform general clergy services with some legal limitations. They are not allowed to conduct pastoral counseling because that does require advanced educational training. They also must swear an ethics and responsibility oath. “What is unique is that we do not require formal religious education to be clergy in our church,” said Sears. “Because of the separation of church and state, each church determines what qualifies to be clergy in their own church. One of the main reasons people do this is because they want to be marriage officiates.” Sears said freedom of spiritual expression is what draws people

Wish Tree for children

By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library

For some reason, twice as many people buy children’s Wish Tree books as they do adult books. I guess the pictures are better. An example of great photography is Maggie, the OneEyed Peregrine Falcon, by Christie Gove-Berg. This is the true story of a young falcon raised in a city. She lost an eye when she flew into a building as she was practicing. Falcons need both eyes to hunt so she was trained to be an education bird at a wildlife rehab center. A fun book for kids is a bit yucky. Would You Rather Dine with a Dung Beetle or Lunch with a Maggot has terrific cartoons. Little boys will get a kick out of this icky bug book as it describes what each insect eats. Like maggots eat dying flesh, dung beetles eat elephant poop, spiders suck out the bug juice, etc. The Deadliest Creature in the World, by Guiberson, has some wonderful illustrations of evil-looking animals. Which is the deadliest? The viper says he is because one bite stuns his prey and begins to digest it even before he swallows it. The mosquito says she is because a million people die each year from malaria and other diseases caused

I recently wrote blog posts teaching how to braise and how to sear. So it just occurred to me that I should go ahead and combine the two and tell y’all about how to stew. What hits the spot on a cold day better than a nice steamy hot bowl of thick beef stew? By definition, stew is not a dish – it’s a cooking method that

involves simmering meat and vegetables in a rich flavorful liquid. Now, Leanne, you’re thinking, that sounds an awful lot like braising. And it does (gold star for you) – there are only a couple of differences between a braise and a stew: • With a braise, the meat is generally left in its whole form; with stew, the meat is generally cut into pieces. • With stew, the cooking liquid usually covers the

In this slim book, a talking dog is called to the White House to determine the reason for a depressed presidential pet. (His squeaky toy fell down a vent.) would be: brisket, chuck, oxtail, round, shank, pork shoulder, chicken thighs and mutton. You can stew fish, but you don’t want to cook it very long or your fish will just cook down into a pot of mush. Sea bass, cod, halibut and shark are good options for fish stew. And when it comes to vegetables, the following are prime candidates: potato, carrot, celery root, leek, cabbage, celery, eggplant and tomato. Tough greens handle stewing well, too, but you might want to add them closer to the end of your cooking time. Kale, chard and collard greens are good in a stew. Now, how do you stew? I’m so glad you asked. The following is the basic method you’ll follow, no matter what you’re stewing: • Prepare your protein by dredging in some flour

seasoned with salt and pepper. This step will help your stew to thicken later in the process. (Gluten free? No worries, any gluten free flour will work.) • Take your dutch oven (perfect vessel for stewing) or other heavy pot and sear the meat in some butter or coconut oil. • When your meat has a nice dark sear on it, remove it from the pot and add some diced onions, carrots and celery, and stir until golden brown. • Toss in any herbs and spices you would like to use to season your stew and deglaze the pot with wine, beer, stock, water or a combination of liquids. • Put your meat back in the pan and add enough liquid to just cover the meat. • Bring to a simmer. • Cover and place in the oven at 300 degrees for a couple of hours, depending on your protein. (Fish will

only take 15 or 20 minutes, while a tough cut of beef will need at least two hours.) • When there’s 30 minutes or so left in the stewing process, add vegetables. At the end of the process, if your liquid isn’t as thick as you would like, you can thicken it with a roux of flour and butter, some arrowroot flour or a little cornstarch dissolved in water. You’ll then need to bring the stew to a boil on the stovetop so that the starch can go ahead and do its work to thicken that cooking liquid. And there you have it – a delicious and nutritious stew.

New year sees new principal at Greene Education Center

Noel Keener, left, the new principal at CJ Greene Education Center, proudly stands in front of the school logo painted on the wall of the school’s entrance. Below, she and Vanessa Stewart, general office support, peek through the mail slots in the teacher’s workroom. (Photos/Norma B. Dennis)

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer For Noel Keener, administration of a school is more than an office job. She prefers to be out among the students and staff, connecting to them on a personal level. That is just what she intends to do as CJ Greene Education Center’s new principal. Keener was named principal of CJ Greene on Dec. 14, 2016. She spent the last few days before Christmas break winding down her job as assistant principal at Northeast Guilford High School and beginning her responsibilities at CJ Greene. A Guilford County Schools’ public separate school, it serves students with special needs in ninth grade through 22 years old. When students returned to Greene Education Center on Jan. 4, Keener was in place as its full-time principal. Keener, who has a degree in psychology, has not always worked in education, but her career has always focused on individuals with special needs. When her husband Marc retired from the military, the couple moved several times before settling in the North Carolina Triad

in 2001. After working as an applied behavior analysis therapist in WinstonSalem, Keener started her career with GCS as an exceptional children’s teacher in 2004 at Allen Jay Middle School and worked as a teacher until 2012. During that time, she also served as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina Greensboro teaching introduction to professions in special education. In 2012 she participated in the Piedmont Triad Leadership Academy

where she worked as an intern principal at Jones Elementary School, also earning her master’s in special education. Her position at Northeast High School followed. “When I learned about the principal’s job at Greene, I felt it was the job for me,” Keener said. “I knew I wanted to be part of a school created for children with special needs. I had heard good things about this school and what the kids were doing. I have a nephew with autism and

although he does not live here, Greene has an environment in which he could thrive. “All the teaching I have done has gravitated toward students that others feel difficult to work with. I liked seeing what a difference high expectations coupled with caring would make.” Keener feels lucky to be part of CJ Greene. Her focus will be on students and a better educational life for each of them. “This school is already on that path,” she said. “I

am following two outstanding administrators who have developed a great staff here. It is my responsibility to keep us moving forward with the best practices of keeping the students’ needs first.” Keener feels that by staying innovative and on the cutting edge of education, CJ Greene can continue to be a model for schools similar to it. She plans to meet each staff member individually to get input on their goals and objectives for the school. She also will

host two meet-and-greet opportunities for parents and the community – Jan. 23 at 7:30 a.m. and Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. “The impact we make on our kids and their families will continue throughout their lives,” Keener said. “It is great to have a part in the growth of our students.”
