Construction of sidewalk and bridge planned for 2017 By CAROL BROOKS Editor If all goes according to plan, the Jamestown area will see several long-awaited transportation projects completed in 2017. The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently issued its draft State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for 2017-2027. On the list are five projects within the Jamestown town limits. The first project is the

By CAROL BROOKS Editor Have you ever wondered how a street gets its name, or, more specifically, who determines if it is a street, road, drive, avenue or some other designation? In Jamestown, it’s pretty straightforward. “There is a rhyme to the reason,” said the town’s planning director, Matthew Johnson. “We generally follow Guilford County’s ordinance when considering street names. “The suffix (street, avenue, road, court, way, etc.) has more to do with how the road connects to others … or doesn’t. Generally ‘parkway,’ ‘boulevard,’

extension of the sidewalk along Oakdale Road from the railroad to Chimney Court. The Town will do the planning, design, secure the right of way and construct the sidewalk. Total project cost is $225,000 and the majority of the funding will come from a Congestion Mitigation grant. Also on the STIP is the extension of the sidewalk on East Main Street to Yorkleigh Lane through Lydia’s Tunnel. That project is estimated to cost $850,000 with Jamestown supplying planning and

other services. The Town is in the planning stages to construct a sidewalk along East Fork Road and pedestrian bridge over Koonce City Lake at a cost of $1,200,000. Most of the funding has been received for the project. Jamestown hopes to construct a sidewalk from West Main Street along Penny Road. Curb and gutter is also included. That project, which may be in conjunction with the City of High Point, is scheduled for 2019 and the cost would be $500,000. Norfolk Southern

Railroad has indicated it plans to construct an extension to the siding in Jamestown in 2020. In High Point, extension of the Deep River Greenway Trail connecting the Piedmont Environmental Center with University Park is listed for 2017. The extension would connect with the proposed sidewalk on Penny Road and the Bicentennial Greenway. Carol Brooks can be reached at 336-841-4933 or jamestownnews@north state.net.

Several new North Carolina laws went into effect at the beginning of 2017. But perhaps the biggest legislative news is existing regulations that are still making waves in the state. House Bill 2, commonly known as the “Bathroom Bill,” passed in March of last year and nullified local ordinances around the state that would have expanded protections for the LGBT community. It stated that people must use the restroom based on the gender specified on their birth certificates. The nullified local ordinances had allowed for people to use public restrooms of the gender with which they identify. The pushback because of this ordinance has been intense. Several national corporations planning to relocate to or expand operations in the state backed out, as did several national sporting and entertainment events. Last month then Gov. Pat McCrory called a special session of the legislature to consider a repeal of HB2. Many thought that would be the end of the “Bathroom Bill.” However, the state House adjourned without voting on its repeal.

So for now HB2 stands. What the future holds for this legislation is anybody’s guess. North Carolina did welcome a handful of new residents this month. The line between North and South Carolina is not precisely where surveyors drew it in colonial times. Lawmakers on both sides have been working to straighten it out. McCrory signed an executive order moving the state line about 50-100 feet in areas east and west of Charlotte. This affects about 50 homeowners in South Carolina who are now residents of the Old North State. Sales tax will now be charged on installation, maintenance and repair services relating to real property. This means that contractors who install or repair HVAC systems, garage doors, water heaters, home siding, kitchen cabinets or counters, flooring, or any plumbing and electrical repairs will have to collect sales tax on those services. However, work on new construction and landSee LAWS, page A5

A street by any other name … ‘highway,’ etc. are for larger roads which carry larger volumes of traffic. While it’s not directly tied to width, it is somewhat related.” Jamestown’s Mayor Keith Volz must have known this when he proposed the name “Jamestown Parkway” for the re-routed High Point Road. Most of the thoroughfares in Jamestown are drives or courts. There is one loop (Abbott), two circles (Logan and Montgomery), one trail (Mangerton), one terrace (Parkview), one parkway (Jamestown), one place (Castleton), only one avenue (Cole) and, surprisingly, very few streets. This is based on the most recent town map printed in 2009. The Guilford County Street Naming Ordinance (A-6-5) sheds light on some interesting facts. “The suffix ‘street’ shall be used for roadways running generally in a northsouth direction or parallel to the base line for the grid system. (Main Street) “The suffix ‘avenue’ shall be used for roadways running generally in an east-west direction or par-

allel to the base line for the grid system depending on the individual user policy. “The suffix ‘drive,’ ‘trail,’ and ‘trace’ shall be used for roadways which follow a wandering alignment in different directions and/or intersect both ‘street’ and ‘avenue’ and generally have scenic attractiveness. “The suffix ‘road’ shall be used for roadways running generally in a diagonal direction and/or connecting urban areas. “The suffix ‘boulevard’ and ‘parkway’ shall be used for divided roadways, the sides of which are separated by a park or open median strip for their main extent with limited direct access. “The suffix ‘terrace,’ ‘point,’ ‘cove,’ ‘dale’ or ‘way’ shall be used for short roadways with an exit from one end only (dead end) with no potential for extension. “The suffix ‘court’ shall be used for a single cul-desac less than eight hundred (800) feet in length with no intersecting side streets and not intended to be extended in the future. “The suffix ‘circle’ shall

(Guilford County uses ‘lane’ only for private lanes as defined by

this ordinance.) The venerable Smithsonian Magazine answered a question about the difference in a “street” and an “avenue” in the December 2014 issue: “A street is a basic paved traffic link within an urban area; an avenue was originally grander, wider and often lined with trees or other flora. But the distinction has eroded over time,

as when, for example, real estate developers indiscriminately call new roads ‘avenues’ to make a more grandiose impression.” (Answer by Nancy Pope, Curator, National Postal Museum) Another section of the county ordinance, A-6-3, deals with street naming. “It is acceptable for two streets to bear the same See STREET, page A7

January is National Radon Action Month The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services (GC DHHS), Public Health Division, has received radon testing kits to be distributed throughout the community. Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas emitted from the decay of uranium that is in soil, rock and water. As the radon gas seeps through the soil, it can become trapped in the air of buildings. Due to the geology found in North Carolina, elevated indoor radon levels, especially in the Piedmont and mountain regions of the state, have been found. Based on a state survey, 6.7 percent or one out of 15 homes have radon levels exceeding the Environmental Protection

Agency (EPA) action level As a carcinogen, radon can cause cancer and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The chance of developing radon-induced lung cancer depends on many factors, which includes the level of radon exposure and time you are exposed to this radioactive gas. Smoking increases chances of radon-induced lung cancer by nine times that of a non-smoker. The only way to determine whether you have a radon problem is to test your home. The free kits are available on a firstcome, first serve basis. If you would like to test your home for radon, visit the GC DHHS Environmental Health office located on the

third floor of 1203 Maple St., Greensboro, or call 336-641-3771 for more information. One test per home is generally sufficient to test for radon, unless your home is extremely large (more than 10,000 square feet). To get the most accurate radon level test result, test the lowest living level of your home. Test your basement only if a family member sleeps or spends a good deal of time there. Radon is a gas that will rise and dissipate, so testing an upper level of your home will not give as accurate a radon level reading. You may also order a free radon test kit from the State of North Carolina by visiting their website, www.ncradon.org.

GSO Police seek information about New Year’s Day collision involving pedestrian Greensboro Police are asking for the public’s help in providing vital information about a collision between a vehicle and pedestrian early New Year’s Day. Brandon Reece Sowells, 27, was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle between 2:30-4:20 a.m. on Jan. 1. Police are unsure of the location of the crash, but believe it may have occurred in the area of

Stanley Road, Hilltop Road, Adams Farm Parkway or Bridford Parkway. Fabian Dwayne White, 25, of Maryland, reported to police that he accidentally struck Sowells with his vehicle, a gold-colored 2013 Honda Accord, in the parking lot of The Madison at Adams Farms Apartments. However, evidence collected at the scene contradicted this version of events.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or have information about the crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 336373-1000 or text the tip to 274637 using the key word badboyz. All calls to Crime stoppers are completely anonymous, and may result in a reward up to $2,000. White has been charged with driving while impaired and felony serious injury by vehicle.

2,664 impaired drivers arrested over holidays The annual Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s Holiday Booze It & Lose It enforcement campaign removed thousands of impaired drivers from roadways. State and local law enforcement arrested and charged 2,664 drivers for driving while impaired, of which 2,400 were alcoholrelated and 264 were drug-related. “The safety of those traveling on our roads is our top priority,” GHSP Director Don Nail said. “Removing just one impaired driver from our roads can save a life and during this campaign, law enforcement removed 116 impaired drivers on average each day.” During the four-week campaign, law enforcement agencies across North Carolina issued 108,951 traffic and criminal violations at 8,439 sobriety-checking stations and saturation patrols. The number of fatalities resulting from an impaired driver dropped 16.7 percent compared to 2015, with 359 deaths in North Carolina in 2016. The Booze It &

Lose It education and enforcement campaign has created increased awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as the penalties associated with driving while impaired for the past 22 years. “It is encouraging to see that impaired driving fatalities decreased last year. I believe this trend demonstrates that people are becoming more responsible and making the decision to not drive while impaired,” continued Nail. The top five counties for DWI arrests during the Holiday Booze It & Lose It enforcement campaign were: Wake County: 247 Guilford County: 177 Mecklenburg County: 162 Cumberland County: 117 Forsyth County: 110 The N.C. Department of Transportation and GHSP reminded motorists to use the mobile website BeSmarterThanThat.com to help them find a safe way home before drinking.

AUTUMN

This week’s pet is a cat named Autumn. Autumn is a black and tan tortoiseshell. She is already spayed and weighs 22 pounds. Autumn is about 3 years old and likes the attention. She is good with other cats and is a part of our open cat room. Autumn is ready to go home and would go good in any home. She will need a large cat litter box and it would not hurt her to go on a diet as well. She is up-to-date on all of her shots and FELV/FIV negative. Her adoption fee is $50. This animal and others may be seen at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, 4525 W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, during business hours. The phone number is 336641-3400. Preschool begins as a vision, ends in reality By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Ever since the Rev. Carl Pulliam began to pastor Bales Wesleyan Church, he had prayed that some day the church could start a preschool. After all, the facilities included a large gym for indoor play, lots of space outside for a playground and Sunday school classrooms that sat empty during the week. He and the congregation had even had some of the classrooms remodeled to accommodate a preschool in preparation for some day in the future when one might be started. When the preschool where Lindsay Moses worked in Greensboro announced it was closing in August 2016, she did what most wives would – called her husband Josh to let him know. Josh was the new assistant pastor at Bales Wesleyan and was in his first staff meeting with the pastor. “I had no idea the pastor had long envisioned a preschool at the church,” Josh said. “But when I told him the situation with Lindsay, he suggested talking to her about bringing the preschool to Bales.” Pullian and Lindsay did talk. They discussed goals and other details about having a preschool at the church and within two weeks the school was ready to open. On the day after Labor Day, Lindsay, two other work-

ers from the Greensboro location and about 20 kids started the newly formed Bales Wesleyan Preschool. Lindsay serves as its director. There are currently four workers, but the pastor, Josh and another part-time staff member, Tim Reklau, are very much involved in its activities. “It would have never happened without the preparations the church had already made,” Lindsay said. “We want to minister to the community, to meet the needs of some of its families.” “We want to be known as a church that loves Jamestown,” Josh added. The Bales Wesleyan Preschool handbook reads in part: “We believe that God loves children uniquely and completely and that He has specifically chosen each one to be His … Bales Wesleyan Preschool strives to provide a quality preschool program with developmentally appropriate learning experience in the context of a nurturing Bible-centered Christian environment.” The preschool starts after Labor Day and runs until Memorial Day. It serves children ages 6 months to 5 years old. “For the little ones, it is more like a Mommy’s Morning Out,” Lindsay said. “At age 2 we begin to have an actual curriculum and syllabus that we follow.” Each day has a different focus, all of which con-

There is Art, Music, Chapel, Story Time and Fun Friday. Weather permitting, they play outside or enjoy riding toys in the gym and snacks in the fellowship hall. Children study a monthly memory verse and have devotions each morning. Throughout the year, they participate in special programs to which families are invited. In addition to having a program at Thanksgiving, the preschool teamed with children from the Bales’ Sunday school to present a Christmas program. The staff is planning a graduation ceremony for children who will be leaving to attend public school. Beginning June 5, preschool staff will conduct a 12-week series of summer-

camp programs. The time, from 9-12, will be the same and parents can choose which weeks they want their children to come. Lindsay, who has always worked with children, acknowledged this has all been possible because the church planned ahead. “At the least it would have been hard to start so quickly,” she said. “But the pastor was expecting to have a preschool some day. “I see the school as a ministry and want to reach out to the community Friends. and show them love, offer the kids a safe place and meet the needs of area families.” To learn more about the

CHEERS AND JEERS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Suggestion made for new town manager Jamestown, I found our new town manager. She is extremely qualified, knows the town’s finances like the back of her hand, is an award-winning finance officer and best of all … she is already on staff. Her name is Judy Gallman, finance director for the town. She will have to work five days a week instead of the current four-day a week schedule she is currently working. Ms. Gallman is already making $82,895 for working an 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule, four days a week. Extending her duties to the town manager position while also serving as finance director should be a possibility and well within her education and experience. Kathryn Billings worked as assistant town manager and finance director. Given Ms. Gallman would be required to work 20 percent more (an extra day per week), Council

could increase her salary to compensate for the fifth day of the week. The town would benefit from increasing her salary rather than pay a new manager the stated salary in the manager job advertisement … “The Town Council anticipates a hiring salary of $88,000 to $106,000 depending on the candidate’s experience, qualifications and salary history.” A 20 percent increase of Ms. Gallman’s current salary of $82,895 equates to $99,474 annually. This is the equivalent salary of Ms. Gallman working a five-day a week schedule. Can you imagine the new manager being hired for the starting pay of $88,000 per year and then realize they earn less than the finance director? With this in mind, the new manager will likely have a starting pay closer to the $106,000 amount. If the Council has the town’s best interest in mind, then this is the course they will

take. Otherwise we will have another highly paid town employee to go along with the interim town manager, Ms. Billings, and town planner, Mr. Johnson. The Council should immediately terminate Ms. Billings’ exorbitant contract as interim manager and name Ms. Gallman as the interim until she is appointed as town manager. Ms. Gallman has the experience, qualifications and salary to get the job done as town manager. Check, check and check – she is the one for the job. With this appointment, Council can reverse the current trend of overspending for town positions and maybe in return gain some dignity back. T. Hobbs Jamestown

Attend Town Council meetings I share with Editor Carol Brooks the belief that Jamestown residents – and indeed all Americans – should resolve to become more involved in government affairs, this and every year. Our beliefs split when it comes to Ms. Brooks’ statement that, “If residents don’t go to the [Town Council] meetings and voice opinions, then they have no right to complain about the results.” It should be reasonable to trust that council members will be good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars even if each town resident is not a witness to their every vote. And it is entirely unrealistic to expect that all town residents, many of whom are senior citizens and others who have young chil-

tough talking and covered with tattoos. Wendell is a taxidermist who serves the hunting community. These two hardly fit the caricature images of being gay. But they are gay, and they have paid a heavy price for it. For years there was isolation from family and unrelenting and constant fear that, somehow, someone would blow the whistle to law enforcement about their illegal relationship and activities. The greatest power of the novel is not, however, in any testimonial argument or inside look at the gay lifestyle. Quite the contrary, the story’s power comes from the tortured and tender way in which Wendell and Frank adapt to Frank’s rapidly deteriorating physical and mental condition. When Frank suffers a stroke while tending the tomato plants in his beloved garden, the ambulance rushes him to the hospital, and Wendell follows. But because only family members are allowed to accompany Frank, Wendell tells the attendant that he is Frank’s brother. When he is asked to show identification, he fumbles and then tells the attendant he left his wallet at home He is worrying that if she saw his last name was different from Wendell’s, his lie about being a brother would cause more trouble. As Frank’s condition declines, there is a growing emptiness in the lives

of both men. No children or nieces and nephews or other family members show up to care for them or to claim little items that the men have treasured. Frank’s loneliness is tempered by a little dog named Daisy that Wendell found at the pound and gave to Frank. Frank is shattered when the dog is torn to pieces in an accident in his garden. Wendell, crushed by Frank’s loss, begins a project to use his taxidermy skills to re-create Daisy from the parts remaining from the accident. One of the novel’s most poignant moments comes when Frank discovers the incomplete project and, though failing steadily, he falls in love again with the half-stuffed dog. As the novel closes, this reader was moved not so much by the problems Frank and Wendell had as gay people, but the challenge of finding meaning at the end of life. Wendell, who always fixed the meals, has trouble adjusting to cooking for just himself when the bedridden Frank eats only nutrient shakes. He has too much time to fill and finds “the biggest danger of all is an empty space in the day. It’s easy, then, for the whole thing to break through and rush in and join the emptiness inside.” “You just go on living,” Frank says. “You don’t have to have a reason.”

Good friends and books can change our understandWhy have the attitudes of people in our state towards gay and transgender people changed so quickly and so dramatically? Before even trying to answer, I should acknowledge that many people have not changed so quickly and some have not changed at all. That said, there has been a dramatic and almost unbelievable change in many people, something you would not have predicted only a few years ago at the turn of the millennium. Why so fast? A powerful factor in changing our attitudes has been what we learned from people we came to know and admire. Whether they were gay, transgender or struggling to resolve confusion about their identity, our connection to them opened the door for changed attitudes. Books have been a powerful change agent, too.

Council members even seemed surprised at the proposal during the meeting, so residents certainly would not have known to sign up to comment on it. This is just one example of how Ms. Brooks’ proposed requirement for residents to speak up at public meetings in order to earn the right to criticize their outcomes simply would not work. Again, I agree with Ms. Brooks about the benefits of increased civic participation. I attended the January meeting and look forward to seeing her, Jamestown Council members and staff and fellow residents, at the February meeting and those throughout the year. Living with a difficult friend

Q. Me and my best friend Jean, her husband and two kids moved in together. I have a dog and cat and she has a dog and two cats, Another friend recently asked us to dogsit her 7-month-old puppy for a week and we all agreed to it. The puppy peed in the house twice even after being let out several times. Now Jean wants to leave this pup outside all day or in a crate. She also doesn’t care about cleaning out the cat litter boxes every day and the boxes are in my bathroom because there’s no room in hers. I am quite frustrated and, unfortunately, we are stuck in a twoyear lease with one and a half years to go. I’m not trying to start a war, but change has to start with me. A. In hindsight, you probably shouldn’t have agreed to dog-sit the puppy. For whatever time the puppy still will be with you, try to get him in his crate when no one is home. When someone is home, take the puppy out frequently and try to contain him to a room with no carpet, like the kitchen. I suggest a meeting with everyone in the household and develop a chore list. This would include when and who should take care of the litter boxes on a rotating basis. The list can includes feeding the pets, doing the dishes, preparing the meals, cleaning, etc. If the children are old enough, they could help out with maybe collecting trash, putting toys away, etc. Explain how emptying the kitty litter is best for a healthy environment. Unfortunately, everyone will have to make compromises. The goal is that you all will have a comfortable home environment. Ms. Brooks notes that citizens have the option of making public comments at Town Council meetings, provided that they sign up to do so before the meetings begin. At the most recent meeting, when Town Council members voted on the interim town manager’s salary, concerned residents would have had no idea that a vote on a raise was even on the table. The agenda for the meeting (which is not available on the town’s website as of Jan. 11, as the link for the January 2017 meeting inexplicably goes to the agenda for March 15, 2015) did not make mention of a salary increase.

County identified areas of improvement in 1996 By CAROL BROOKS Editor In 1996, Guilford County published “Forecast 2015,” a look at county development for the next 20 years. Work began on the project in March 1995 with anticipated final adoption in December 1996. The Forecast 2015 Steering Committee spoke with several citizen groups, planning boards and town councils about the vision, and each group agreed on the need to preserve the quality of life in Guilford County. The forecast was a 20-year plan to be set up by individual jurisdictions (two cities and four towns in addition to county government), which would set their own list of priorities within the five focus areas. The document outlines the state of the county in 1996. While it did not appear to list any concrete areas the county needed to focus on, minutes from the Nov. 19, 1996, Jamestown Town Council indicate the 2-inch-thick booklet highlights five areas Guilford County must

focus on: 1. Excellence in education 2. County-wide planning 3. Empowerment of neighborhoods 4. Celebration of our heritage 5. Efficiency in government Philip Gelzer, chairman of the Forecast 2015 Steering Committee, expanded on the five visions for the Council. Excellence in education will produce both a skilled workforce and attract high-quality employees. The report states that education is the largest “industry” in the county, employing thousands of people. “It can be said that the key to Guilford County’s future lies in our ability to educate each citizen to his or her full potential.” (All quotes are from the report.) The report also noted the need to expand and update educational facilities within the county school system, including day care and after school care. Countywide planning must address the issues of land use, development, environmental protection, transportation, industry incentives and the county’s economic future.

Laws – continued from front scaping is exempt. The gas tax also is increasing, but by less than a penny. Another law effective this month allows for teenagers in foster care to continue receiving services until they are 21 years old. Officials with the state’s Division of Social Services expressed concern that

many young adults in foster care are not prepared to be on their own at age 18. Extending services through age 21 provides time for additional guidance and assistance, with the goal being more foster children earning high school diplomas and enrolling in college. Drivers who travel the

Empowerment of neighborhoods could be strengthened through better housing, nurturing of community spirit, prevention of crime and improved day care and elder care. Revitalization was a key point in the report. Tied in to neighborhood revitalization is the need to preserve the area’s heritage and promote cultural diversity. Efficiency in government could be improved by consolidating facilities, services and programs. Some interesting statistics present themselves in the report. The 2015 population of Guilford County was predicted to be 423,000 but actual figures were 488,406. Median age was expected to be 40 but was actually 36. The racial balance of the county was below predictions. Forecast 2015 believed 68 percent of the county’s population would be white when actual figures were 52 percent. Wastewater treatment was one area the county needed to work on. “Both Greensboro and High

Triangle Expressway in Wake and Durham counties are facing 3.5 percent toll increase. Those driving the entire distance of the toll road will pay $3.13, a 9-cent increase from the previous total. Customers who pay through bill-bymail will pay $4.81, an increase of 16 cents. Toll fees are used to pay high-

Point will need to expand their treatment capacity well before 2015. Plans in fact, are underway in both cities to fund major (wastewater) treatment plant expansion. “The communities of Guilford County will need to develop long-term sustainable strategies to increase recycling, find new areas for landfills, or perhaps construct an incinerator.” The report also addressed public facilities. “Public facilities like parks, libraries, theaters and museums reflect the ways in which communities view themselves. The higher their number and quality, the better able are they to be used as marketing tools to sell the community to potential newcomers.” The report called the number of public facilities in the county “remarkable” and pointed out the many libraries, museums and historical sites (including Mendenhall Plantation in Jamestown), African-American sites, theater venues, recreation centers, greenways and parks. It also mentioned the “aggressive policy of greenway trail con-

way bonds and for road maintenance. A new law requires the Department of Health and Human Services allow dependants of Armed Forces members to maintain eligibility for Medicaid waivers when the service member is transferred to assignments outside North Carolina. The eligibility is

struction.” Major road improvements on the states’ transportation plan included an urban loop around Greensboro (in progress), I-85 bypass around Greensboro (completed), U.S. 311 bypass around High Point (completed), completion of Bryan Boulevard (completed), U.S. 220 North and NC. 68 connector near the airport and widening of I-40 in the western part of the county. Following Gelzer’s presentation, then-Mayor Thomas Ragsdale Jr. stated that he would like the Town Council to be one of the first to endorse the plan. At a public hearing Dec. 17, 1996, “Forecast 2015” was officially endorsed. Guilford County has undoubtedly met many if not all of the items noted in Forecast 2015 but there is still room for improvement. As the population increases, new problems arise that need to be addressed.

Lifestyles

Dangerous Christmas presents By CAROL REED Jamestown Public Library Sometimes the best intentions can be disastrous, or hilarious, depending on one’s viewpoint. As the human in my house, my viewpoint is often different than my cats’ view. Once a small, but not too bright, Vivian got her head stuck in a brown paper bag with those tote handles. A loud noise startled her so that she streaked through the house with that horrible bag chasing her. It scared her so badly that her bladder let loose, fortunately inside the bag. This Christmas, my son and his wife gave my cats a round cozy shark’s head to sleep in. When I set it up for them, 17-pound Luke was the first to enter. He got stuck inside the small opening and looked like a turtle trying to get out. He knocked over a large vase and ran to hide under a bed. Those shark pillows are dangerous. When I told my son and his wife about it, they just cackled. As I said, viewpoints can vary. Real sharks can be more dangerous, but luckily they live in wetter climates than my den. Biggest, Baddest Book of Sea Creatures shows children the most dangerous life forms in the oceans. Sea snakes, slugs

and sharks are only a few of the man killers under the sea. The photographs are phenomenal. Check out the juvenile nonfiction for many other shark books, from Mako to Tiger to Zebra sharks. Soul Surfer is a true book and a movie about a shark attack on a young girl surfer. Bethany Hamilton still surfs, even though her arm was mangled beyond repair. As a one -armed surfer, she overcame all odds to become a champion again, through sheer determination and unwavering faith. All Is Lost is another shark-infested video. When a man’s sailboat is destroyed at sea, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to push him into shipping lanes in hopes of being rescued. As his supplies run out and the sharks circle, he must face his own mortality. For some silly cat books, try the Bad Kitty books by Nick Bruel, great for elementary children and their families. Rob Scotton has also created a hilarious cat series called Splat the Cat. We even have a cartoon video of Splat. If mystery is more your style, try The Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun. NCDOT unveils highway sign that honors Congressman Coble Officials from the N.C. Department of Transportation joined friends and family members of the late U.S. Representative J. Howard Coble on Jan. 10 to unveil a sign naming a portion of Interstate 85 in the congressman’s honor. Hundreds gathered for the ceremony at Alamance Presbyterian Church.

“Dedicating this portion of highway is a fitting tribute and will help Congressman Coble’s memory live on in a tangible and personal way,” Acting Transportation Secretary Mike Holder said. “Everyone who passes along this corridor will be reminded of his outstanding dedication and sacrifice.”

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners requested that the state name a portion of I-85 for Coble to commemorate his lifelong commitment to public service.

Highway sign unveiled at Coble’s church. “He’s had a profound impact on our area, and his 30-year tenure in Congress is a testimony to just how much he was loved and respected by his constituents,” said Division Seven Board Member Cheryl McQueary.

Coble was a lifelong resident of Guilford County and a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve. He served as an assistant federal

prosecutor, state revenue secretary and state legislator prior to his first election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984.

“The department is pleased to have designed and erected this sign, further honoring his memory,” said Division Seven Engineer Mike Mills.

The stretch of I-85 honoring Coble is between I-40 and Alamance Church Road in Guilford County.

UDC begins year with program about Children of the Confederacy Guilford Chapter 301, United Daughters of the Confederacy, met on Dec. 20. Michele Miller and her daughter, Children of the Confederacy (CofC) member Leann Miller, were meeting hostesses. The following people were acknowledged: • Michele Miller as Third Vice President General. Miller was elected to serve a two-year term and was installed at the November 2016 UDC General Convention held in Richmond, Va. During her term in office, Miller will direct activities of the CofC and chair the CofC Committee. Miller is the first Guilford Chapter 301 member to be elected to serve as an officer of UDC General. • Joanne Sharpe as Honorary President of Division. Sharpe was awarded the designation for outstanding service at all lev-

els of UDC. She was presented with a sash and pin during the NC Division’s winter board meeting held at UDC House in Raleigh. Registrar Virginia Seagraves presented supplemental certificates recognizing service of Confederate ancestors: three certificates to Joanne Caldwell and two to Linda Reid. Michele and Leann Miller presented the program, “CofC: Who We Are and What We Do.” Honorary Associate Member, William J. Moore, spoke at the Jan. 17 meeting. His topic was “Greensboro During the War.” Prospective members and guests are welcome to attend any meeting. Contact Chapter President, Joanne Sharpe at 336285-5900 or www.Guilford301UDC.org to inquire about meeting details.

STREET – continued from front name provided the streets intersect and have different suffixes. (i.e., Ragsdale Road and Ragsdale Court) “Proposed streets obviously in alignment with existing streets shall bear the same name and the suffix shall be in accordance with section A-6-5. (Knollwood, Forestdale and Potter drives) “Proposed streets that may align in the future, but do not at the time of such development, shall not bear the same name. At such time the streets are connected, the street with the least amount of property owners will be renamed and affected properties readdressed so that the previously unconnected streets bear the same name. (This only happened with a few

businesses on the railroad side of Main Street when Ragsdale Road became Dillon Road down to the river several years ago.) “Two opposing cul-desacs with lengths of less than 800 feet that are separated by a four-way intersection shall bear different street names and use the suffix ‘court.’ “A proposed street obviously in alignment with another proposed street shall bear the same name.” Confused? These are just the ordinances in Guilford County. In other parts of the United States, designations don’t seem to follow any set pattern. Many “suffixes” are used interchangeably. Take this into consideration: Lexington Avenue

begins in High Point, becomes Greensboro Road near I-74, then Main Street in Jamestown. Had the road not been re-routed near Millis Road, it would have then become High Point Road, which is now Gate City Boulevard. Same road: avenue to road, to street to road to boulevard. So, when you are driving on a parkway or parking in your driveway, remember, while there is some basis for thoroughfare naming, it’s basically up to what a subdivision developer or city want to call it.

Ace Hardware has been at the 715-B West Main St. in Jamestown for the past 10 years. The owner, Sunil Chojar, and his wife operated the store until Sunil passed away. Chojar’s son, Ritik

Chojar, along with his staff continued to run the store until the decision was made to close it in January 2017. Lee Richman, who has supported Ace Hardware over the years, won the grand prize for the closing contest. “I always found the staff

to be very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable,” Richman said. “Although I am extremely pleased to have earned enough reward points during the contest to win the grand prize, I will miss Jamestown’s Ace Hardware. It will be a loss to the Jamestown community.”

By NORMA B. DENNIS Staff Writer Tom Anderson and Billy Christiansen are good examples of where the world of imagination can take you. For the two men, it has taken them into the publication of a children’s book, with four more on the way. The words of the stories are crafted from the imagination of Anderson. Christiansen brings the words to life visually. The two work at CJ Greene Education Center – Anderson as a teacher and Christiansen as a teacher assistant. But they first met when Anderson was the after-school director for the Autism Society of North Carolina Regional Office and hired Christiansen to work with the group. Becoming an author and illustrator was nothing to which either initially aspired. Anderson’s undergraduate work was in pre-med. He changed career plans and obtained a master’s in education at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He admits, however, to being interested in writing since high school. “I was into fantasy and dreaming,” he said, “anything that fostered your imagination. A couple of sad events in my life lead me to write two of my books. Now when I am quiet, things just come to me. Once an idea is in my head, I have to write it down.”

Teachers collaborate on children’s book

He has worked at CJ Greene since it opened. Drawing has always interested Christiansen, even as a child. After getting a degree in fine arts at St. Andrews University, he felt a career in graphic design would be the best way to make a living. “I did not want to be a starving artist,” he said with a smile. “But after working in graphic design for 20 years, I felt burnt out. It was not fulfilling – I wanted to give back.” Having always felt drawn to children with special needs, he applied for a job with the Autism Society of N.C., where he worked one-on-one with students, teaching them communication and selfhelp skills. He also worked with the Arc of High Point. A teacher at CJ Greene asked him to consider filling a teaching position at the school. At first, Christiansen continued to work part-time with the Autism Society, but is in his third year as a teacher assistant at CJ Greene. Now, both Anderson and Christiansen are focused on their jobs at the school and collaborating on the books. Anderson was familiar with his co-worker’s exceptional artistic ability and asked if he would be interested in illustrating his stories. He showed Christiansen several of them to see which he would be most interested in drawing. Christiansen choose the story of Louise, a line in a pencil.

“There was so much imagination in the story I knew I could create it into characters,” Christiansen said. Louise has dreams and expectations of making her own “mark” on the world. Included in the book are the line from a pen and one from a crayon and how each gets from the writing implement to paper. At the advice of others, the book, titled Louise, was self-published in September 2016 under the brand of A Kangaroo Konnections Publication. “We were told to just pick one book at a time and get it out there,” Anderson said. The book was a true collaboration for the men, who have formed not only a partnership but a friendship. They have spent hours working on the details together. Anderson provided suggestions and Christiansen crafted the ideas, adding his own artistic spin. “Tom had the pages down like he wanted them,” Christiansen noted. “I would take each page, find the highlight and illustrate it. “I grew up loving creatures and fantasy and that is what Tom’s stories are like. Knowing each other also makes it easier.” Louise is written on a second grade reading level, but children in grades three-five would find it interesting as well. “Adults would enjoy the color and how it is put together,” Anderson said.

Tom Anderson, left, wrote a children’s book showing dreams can come true, which his friend and co-worker at Greene Education Center, Billy Christiansen, illustrated. The book is available on Amazon. Both writer and illustrator have included parts of their lives into the book. The characters in Louise are based on people from Anderson’s life. Louise is his grandmother and Harold the pen line is his father. Jo Anne Worley of the television show “Laugh In” inspired Dawn’s Early Light Daisy Glow, the crayon line. On one page Christiansen included a reflection of his father and a tiny picture of his son’s dinosaur. The next book to be published is Rabbit Who Learned to Listen. It was the first story Anderson wrote. He illustrated it himself by cutting out figures

from paper, including his son’s handprints for grass and his daughter’s fingerprints for the center of flowers. Christiansen has taken all the figures and incorporated them into the layout of the pages. Other future books are The Bell Ringer, Snort the Dragon and The Creatures From the Out of Sync Realm, a tale of imaginary creatures from A-Z. “Growing up, I was a science fiction nerd,” Anderson said. “All my stories focus on the magical, mystical and make believe. But they all have a moral or character-building quality. “Billy is so good with his

artwork he can change his style to match the flavor of any of the stories.” Just as Louise dreamed of making her special mark in life, the two friends would like to see their books touch so many people that they could make publishing a full-time endeavor. For now they are happy to let writing and illustrating be an extension of their work with children with special needs. The book Louise costs $9.95 and is available on Amazon.

Basketball camp scholarships available EnergyUnited is giving two students an opportunity to hit the hardwood alongside their favorite college basketball athletes and coaches this summer, thanks to Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships. EnergyUnited will select one young man for a scholarship to attend the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp June 17-21 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and one local young lady for the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp June 11-14 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The scholarships cover all expenses at the overnight camps, which provide a glimpse into life on a college campus. “The camps teach valuable lessons that will benefit students not only on the basketball court, but also in life,” said Maureen Moore, Communications Manager of EnergyUnited. “I encourage all interested students to apply.” Applications are being accepted through March 31 and can be found online at www. energyunited.com/sports-camp. Applicants

will be judged on academic records, extracurricular activities and an essay that must be submitted with the application. To be eligible to win, students must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the 2017-2018 and have permission from a parent or guardian. At camp, students stay overnight in dorms on campus, learn fundamental skills that will help them excel on and off the court, and receive direct individual and group instruction from Division 1 coaches to enhance their basketball ability. Wes Moore, coach of the Wolfpack women’s basketball team, and Roy Williams, coach of the 2005 and 2009 national champion Carolina Tar Heel men’s basketball team, will direct the camps with the help of staff and current and former players. Eligible students who are interested in the scholarship can contact Donnie Shoaf, Communications Specialist at 704-9242139 or donnie.shoaf@energyunited.com for more information.

DIVERSIONS COUCH THEATER

Picks of the week

By SAM STRUCKHOFF

STRANGE BUT TRUE By SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was American philosopher George Santayana who made the following sage observation: “Language is like money, without which specific relative values may well exist and be felt, but cannot be reduced to a common denominator.” • If you’re like me, you find it hard to resist a good book, and their abundant availability presents a problem: Good books are being published faster than they can be read. This leads to an extensive TBR (to-beread) list, much of which is stacked on the bedside tables of readers the world over. (The introduction of ebooks has only worsened the problem; now the books

stack up with no visual reminder of how many there are.) I don’t have a solution, but it may help to know that the Japanese have a word to describe this behavior. “Tsundoku” means “the acquiring of reading materials followed by letting them pile up and subsequently never reading them.” • Polar bears can grow to be massive, weighing more than 2,000 pounds as adults. However, when they’re born, polar bear cubs weigh no more than a pound. • In January of 1914, the Ford Motor Company doubled workers’ wages, to $5 per day, stating, “We want those who have helped us to produce this great institution and are helping to maintain it to share our

prosperity.” Describing this unprecedented move, The Wall Street Journal opined “[Ford has] committed economic blunders, if not crimes.” Confounding critics’ expectations, Ford doubled its profits within two years. • Religious scholars know that they’ll find no mention of peanuts, cashews, pecans or macadamias in the Bible; the only nuts mentioned in that book are almonds and pistachios. Thought for the Day: “The walls of books around him, dense with the past, formed a kind of insulation against the present world and its disasters.” – Ross Macdonald

7. LITERATURE: What mystery writer created the character of Kay Scarpetta, medical examiner? 8. ASTRONOMY: Where is the Lowell Observatory located? 9. FOOD & DRINK: What grated cheese is named for the capital of Italy? 10. LANGUAGE: What is a more common name for an apiarist?

TRIVIA By FIFI RODRIGUEZ 1. MOVIES: What animated movie featured “The Siamese Cat Song”? 2. TELEVISION: In the 1960s sitcom “Family Affair,” what was the name of Buffy’s doll? 3. GEOGRAPHY: Ardennes Forest in Belgium was the site of what major World War II battle?

Editor’s note: DVDs reviewed in this column are available in stores the week of Jan. 30, 2017 “Queen of Katwe” (PG) – In a gorgeous dramatization of real-life struggle and success, teenage Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) goes from her impoverished life in a Ugandan slum to being an internationally recognized chess prodigy. Raised by her single mother (Oscarwinner Lupita Nyong’o) and waking up each morning in a hut, Phiona is still illiterate when she is invited to take up chess by a Christian missionary (David Oyelowo). While her story is an uplifting one, Phiona’s rise comes with hard lessons – you need a plan to get what you want, and that plan may have to change. Do not be tempted to write this one off as another glossy, feel-good underdog story. We’ve seen plenty of chess-underdog stories, and

this one is a Disney production, but it steers clear of cornball territory and doesn’t shy away from the complexities of the story. “Masterminds” (PG-13) – Zach Galifianakis and a posse of SNL veterans give a comedic interpretation of one of the largest cash robberies in U.S. history, committed by “hillbillys” in the heady days of 1997. David Ghantt (Galifianakis) is a fumbling guard for an armored car company, and a perfect sucker for his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) to sweet-talk into an ill-conceived heist run by a greasy huckster (Owen Wilson). Rounding out the menagerie are SNL performers Leslie Jones, as a cop gobsmacked by the stupidity of the perps; Jason Sudeikis, as a sleazy hitman; and Kate McKinnon, as Ghantt’s fiancee with an unsettling gaze. Despite the collective comedic power assembled here, the movie is low on

laughs and long on forcedawkwardness and slapstick humor. Awkward can be funny (Jared Hess also directed “Napoleon Dynamite”), but here it all mostly adds up to a slow story about unbelievable idiots. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (PG-13) – Ex-military police officer and current full-time badass, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) burst from books into the film world in 2012 with bone-crunching first impression. We met a stone-faced hero who travels around the country righting wrongs, breaking faces and refusing to take crap from anyone. This second installment, which finds Reacher uncovering a conspiracy at his old MP unit, switches directors and seems to lose all forward momentum. While the first film was exhilarating and surprising, this one sticks to formula and doesn’t take many big risks in action or drama.

CONTRACT BRIDGE By STEVE BECKER

Never relax

The game of bridge rarely allows its practitioners the luxury of relaxing. Those who adopt a casual attitude when an assignment looks particularly easy have learned through bitter experience that nothing is certain until the requisite number of tricks have been safely tucked away. Consider this deal from the Open Pairs at the 1993 Israeli Bridge Festival in Tel Aviv. North-South – Pam Granovetter and Kathie Wei-Sender of the United States – reached a game few other pairs did. Wei-Sender then brought the contract home by avoiding a trap that would have ensnared many another declarer. West led a diamond to East’s ace, and East returned the heart jack. West won with the ace and returned the queen. Many declarers would have put up the king at this point and been jolted by East’s ruff. Eventually declarer would have lost a club to East to finish down one. Wei-Sender, a multinational and world champion, did not achieve that status by taking success for

granted. Instead of risking a potential heart ruff by East, she played low from dummy on West’s queen, preserving the king for later. When West then led another heart, Wei-Sender again ducked in dummy, ruffing in her hand as East discarded diamonds on the second and third hearts.

The A-K of spades were then cashed. When the queen fell, declarer claimed the remainder, discarding her losing club on the heart king to put the finishing touch on a wellplayed hand. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hopalong Cassidy box camera

By LARRY COX

Q: At a recent garage sale, I paid $50 for a Hopalong Cassidy box camera. My husband thinks I overpaid. What do you think? – Dorothy, North Canton, Ohio A: According to Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles by Joseph J. Caro, there were two types of Hoppy cameras made, and both are extremely collectible. The camera is an all-metal Brownie that takes 120 size film, with a top strap and metal plate featuring the images of Hopalong Cassidy and his horse, Topper. The only

attachment was a special flash that was sold separately. Without the original box, your camera is worth about $250. I have seen this camera sell for more at auction.
